I'm a guitarist who owns a violin (notice how I didn't say I play one), and I found this channel searching for pickup information, but this video gives the solution to the "how do classical violinists sound like they have infinite sustain?" question I've had for years.
I've been at the viola for 4+ years now and this video has to be about the best and thorough lesson I've seen. The professional string performers seem to defy my ability to detect hearing bow changes, now I know how they do it! You're a great teacher. Thanks.
Thank you so much! The basics of playing smoothly and straight with a bow can be challenging, but with your lesson, I can finally can get myself to bow better, after 8 years of playing.
haha yes indeed! But if you want that nice smooth and flowing bow where no-one can tell when you are changing bow direction, then its a must! Stick with it - its not an overnight thing! Like ALL violin techniques, it must be developed....
@@TheOnlineViolinTutor I am just starting out, today is my fourth day of practice but if you say it is worth it, I believe you, despite it being difficult
Thank you--this explains something I'd heard almost 50 years ago: while watching a violinist in an orchestra; he did an up and down stroke with the bow--and the note sounded continuous with no 'break' in between the bow changing direction. I'd always wondered how he did this...and you just revealed it.
Excellent! you explained the importance, the problem, what not to do, modelled the problem, explained where we are trying to achieved, introduced the fingers and the motions and presented exercises, modelled the fingers and the move and the whole finger holding position and the fluidity trying to be achieved, and presented it again and reverbalized it. All in less than 10 minutes. You are GREAT & you didn't over do it at all & the timing & tempo was excellent. I even practiced with my pencil.
I literally started trying to (finally) learn the violin about 2 hours ago, and I happened to luck upon this after watching the one on how (much) to tighten the bow. I'm hoping I'm correct in assuming that - despite this apparently being an 'advanced' technique - it would be a good idea to start with good bow handling as early as possible. This is really hard, hurts my fingers so much... but I already notice a slight difference in my (currently wobbly) control of the bow. Thank you so much.
Absolutely the best series on UA-cam for someone just starting out on the violin. I'm consistently amazed by how much your insights help me every time I watch one of these videos, thank you so much! You always seem to say exact right thing to fix the problems I have.
Wow! I Improved INSTANTLY! I was practicing whole day while watching your videos! From vibratos, holding the bow properly to here! Thank you very much! You gained a subscriber!
My violin teacher tried to teach me that movement by referring to doing spirals and I never got it, but I got it down within the duration of the video! Thank you so much! :)
I am a rank beginner but I found this video extremely helpful. It makes sense that practicing techniques near the threshold (i.e., with the fingers directly over the strings) would not necessarily sound good, but would be very helpful to learn a new technique. I found it helpful to play along with you until I got the sound you did from the strings. I thought you explained this extremely well. :-)
Hi Alison, I've just restarted the violin after learning at school. I'm finding your videos really helpful and it's definitely helping me to get back into the swing of things.
Another life-saving video sis!!! I've been trying to figure this out for two weeks! You made something in my elbow, wrist, and fingers activate and I'm bowing much smoother now! Thanks SO MUCH!
You are a great teacher thanks a lot miss I found all what I need as a beginner violin player with all my respect for your efforts I am very admire with your videos once again : thanks a lot
You may have hyper mobile (double jointed) fingers. I have the same problem and often work with students who do as well. I have a UA-cam video on Kinesio Taping for hyper mobility (I will be doing some new/better ones soon) and I give a lot of tips for it on my Instagram if you would like to check either one out. Best of luck! :)
My daughter will start violin lessons in the fall. I know nothing of the violin, so watching your video is very helpful. Even something as simple as a scale sounds beautiful. I hope she is able to master this, as I could listen to it all day. :)
It's certainly something I won't be able to do...for a long time or never. But...as hard as it could be to explain it, you make it very easy to understand it and very very clear. BRAVO !
The techniqe is purely intuitive. And she is absolutely right: once you get it, you nail it. The bridge part (finger movement) is something I didn't see exposed in other videos. Thank you so much.
her methods really works i had problem with my sound so i took her advice and it work. my teacher told me get as much knowledge for the violin on the internet and i did and i did not regret keep these tutorials coming. thank you
+James Farmakidis I just did the same. I bought a mandolin a couple years ago. It's a great bridge from guitar to violin, as it is scaled and strung the same as violin. That neck feels really small at the start.
Excellent at explaining then performing the different quick bow strokes. I did not know what they were, nor how to play them. I appreciate you teaching this, and learning from you. Thank you again! Your violin is powerful sounding, and also wants to be heard!
I didn’t know any better without a teacher the subtle bending the fingers, however, after watching your close ups.....voila! I can do this slowly. Thank you!
Very informative, thank you. So basically you want to come down with the arm, while still kind of bowing up with the fingers, to damp the shock of changing the direction. And viceversa. I never tried that before
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I saw this soft hand movement in many video clips of the good Violinplayers. All of them explain, that you shall make a soft and flexible move and how important it is, but NO one explains how to learn it! I tried hard to make it, but it didn't work. YOU explain it exactly an step by step-thanks so much for this!!! I'm so happy and grateful!!!
Doing it without assistant properly is hard and slow. Putting a pencil on a table or chair arm, putting your fingers around it, and using weight and downward force to bend all the knuckles works. I assume I will lean the movement from this over time, doing in in midair, half the knuckles and the thumb do not bend and I cannot will it to bend. I feel it's better to do it right from the start with assistance than wrong from the start without.
Ma'am Your way of teaching is v nice . I appreciate your efforts to teach in simple and comprehensive way. May God bless you with knowledge more and more. Regards.
I can't be more gratefull to you! Thank you so much. This vid helped a lot. I've been learning to play the violin for one month and a half now. Recently, while watching professionals playing some pieces I realized their fingers were bent while playing but mine weren't. I was so worried about that until I saw this clip. You have answered all my questions and stopped my worrying. That movement, which I have tried before but not knowing the point of it, is so hard as you mentioned. However, I'll start working on it as soon as possible. Thanks again!
I just startet playing violin a week ago after 12 years of guitar. I bought a lot of books with it. But none of the books and dvds describe the bowhold better and more easy to understand like the way you do. Thank you very very much!
PERFECT! Thank you! I've always seen it being explained and demonstrated in bowing videos but never understood it. I finally got it! Took me a few tries and already my bowing sounds A LOT better!
+johnnylama You are welcome! I dont know who Marty Schwartz is, but thanks anyway. Also, please don't forget to subscribe if you haven't already. It helps my channel to grow and become more visible in UA-cam so I can help more people :)
Today I was very delighted indeed ! After reading your comments on the photos of my Bow on your page on FB, I objectively realized how to tighten the Bow. I had a gradual approach step by step and listened to the sound. There is a point when the sound is very good. Besides, there is the bouncing problem in wrong tightening. Part of my struggle with the G string must have been to Bow tightening. How can I thank you enough for your advice and patience ! Thank you so much.
im 11 and i have to go to violin classes in my school my mom is forcing me i am so scared cause my teacher is so mean and i am horible i been play violin for 2 years and i hav not getting better i forgot all the g and e notes in the summer im so scared ahhh
You should practice every day, even in the summer. If you can afford it, you might want to find a private teacher that you like and take lessons on your own. I've had mean music teachers in school too but you wont be in those classes forever, but playing with other students is good experience so I would recommend sticking it out if you want to continue to play. If you really just don't like playing violin at all then maybe you could talk your mom into playing something else or choosing a different hobby all together.
Haha, im not going to disagree -that was back in the day when i knew nothint about UA-cam, or making videos haha!!! I got rid of it a looooooonnnng time ago now.
It will be hard, my school violin teacher taught me to wrong way for 3 years Now I left the school and my new violin teacher is teaching me the correct way
very helpful videos. I'm re-training myself off the shoulder rest. After 8 yrs it still doesn't feel comfy. I think your videos are great for a refresher course for us adults who don't have a teacher for years. thanks
Alison, Thank you... You're amazing.. My first lesson is tomorrow and Ive been watching your videos for the past couple of days, Im gonna go in and surprise my teacher :)
I was taught this as a student many years ago. The principle was taught was to use the forward movement and the finger motion receeding back exactly as described. It has served me well and as I consider a good tone much more important than perfecting a fast passage with a crumby sound I thank my teacher for this useful tip/ technique. Thanks for your videos, very well presented though you might not have thought so, it was exactly as I was taught !!
I just started the Cello, and when I would watch cellists on UA-cam, their bowing looked so graceful and pretty, and I couldn't figure out why. Now I know! Big help.
Thanks, Alison...I have been trying to figure this concept out...to get that smooth transition, when changing direction, bowing. .you have given me something to practice...
As difficult as you may have found this technique to explain to us, you did a fabulous job and I understood right away what you meant. Thank you. Now to do the work!
Thank you so much!!! I have just practiced the way you showed on the video, it turns out that the sound produced is hugely different and way better than the way I did (even worse than the bad example you have shown...). I wish I had watched this video a year ago at the beginning of my learning. It was a well presented tutorial, you have beautiful mind and face ^_^ Greetings from Hong Kong~~
Thanks for explaining and demonstrating this so thoroughly--back in the early 70s I saw a violin soloist play an up and down stroke without hearing a perceptible 'break' in the note--it sounded like one continuous note and I wondered how he accomplished this, and now all these years later you have explained it...thank you!
I just bought my daughter a violin cause she wanted one so bad and this video I hope helps her tune her skills as she progresses through playing this beautiful instrument.
Alison, that was probably the BEST explanation I have heard on how to change directions! I'd suggest that bontje51 go back and watch the video again paying special attention to everything after the 6:40 mark...and don't expect that it's going to happen overnight! 4 months of playing is not long indeed. bontje51, if you have videos of yourself playing, I would love to see them! Thanks, Dave
HI 'piano' tutor, I am thinking of getting a violin, and randomly looked at this video. This is a truly amazing lesson. You are wonderful and seem very knowledgeable and so willing to share your thoughts. Thanks VMUCH!
OMG..this is what im looking for. im very curious about this small beautiful movement at the end of the bow in every play by professional violinist.. finally found it. thxx a lot
Hey this is my first video by you! Thanks for being such an awesome teacher, you can tell you're a hard worker. And a little feisty. I bet your students are in love with you ;)!
I am just learning to play and I would like to say thank you so much for taking time out of your day to do these videos. I am going to suck for awhile but things will get better. Brings me back to when I first started playing guitar and the drums. Have a wonderful day.
At first it was a little difficult, yet I picked it up very quickly observing your technique rather than listening to your words alone. Very well done thanks very much. I'm new to violin and I believe learning from professionals shall help me greatly. I appreciate your sharing of experience.

My bowing sounds like 1000 weasels being boiled
BROOOOOOO YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO LOOOOOOLLLLLLL same
Hello. 1000 weasels being boiled. That's hard to imagine. But you'll eventually get better.
That sounds like a talent to me.
That's what I call a great analogy. 😊

i was watching people play the violin and i didnt see any of them moving their fingers like this. but they are amazing players
***** They all will, you just wont 'catch' them as its something that is incorporated in the smoothness of the bowing.
The Online Piano and Violin Tutor ah ok i see.
Flexibility of the hand is very subtle, this is a very course example of the movement (I assume to show students how to play) but the idea is correct.
Thanks Alison, your videos are great!!! I've just started watching them, I'm up to number 5. you explain and show everything so clearly!!!!

HI 'piano' tutor, I am thinking of getting a violin, and randomly looked at this video. This is a truly amazing lesson. You are wonderful and seem very knowledgeable and so willing to share your thoughts. Thanks VMUCH!

Really helpful and concise explanation - will get busy exercising to achieve this smoother bowing.
You explained it very beautifully! Thank you master!
Another excellent demonstration. Thank you so much.
Thank you thank you thank you! This helps me so much!
I just bought a violin. All set to resume the learning! 😇
At first it was a little difficult, yet I picked it up very quickly observing your technique rather than listening to your words alone. Very well done thanks very much. I'm new to violin and I believe learning from professionals shall help me greatly. I appreciate your sharing of experience.
Very, very helpful for my mechanical, rigid sounding playing. I will work on this!! Thank you for making this video.
