I owned a 2009 Genesis 3.8, bought it in July, 2008 and kept it for 5 years -- which for me is an eternity. The reason I kept it so long was that I simply couldn't find anything else I liked as well. It was the finest vehicle I have ever owned; would be driving one right now were it not that I was looking for better fuel economy (have a 2016 Hyundai Sonata Limited Hybrid). In my five years of ownership, and over 77K miles, I had a grand total of one thing go wrong -- a camshaft positioning sensor, and that was covered under warranty. The ride, handling, comfort, and good fuel economy (over 24 mpg avg over 5 years) were unmatched by any other car I've owned.
My 2009 Genesis 3.8 is at 220K miles and I have no plans to replace it yet. From my home in Los Angeles, I've taken it to the Canadian Rockies, New York City, and more. 2017 Genesis G80 Review: I've had my G80 for over 2 weeks now. All I can say is WOW! I love the power, comfort, tech features and all the included warranties. I've test driven most of the mid-size luxury cars over the past 2 months, and was completely surprised by the Genesis G80. Driving up and down the SF Bay Area is suddenly fun, especially on 280! I love all the thoughtful features included in my G80 - automatic vehicle hold, which eases the stress of your commute in stop-and-go traffic, innovative hands-free trunk, which opens automatically if it detects your smart key as being nearby for more than 3 seconds. I also have piece of mind with the 10YR/100K Miles warranty. Additionally, the included "Valet Service" will pick up my car while they leave me with a Genesis loaner. This is very convenient, I'd never have to drop off my car for any service. The 311 horses under the hood gives me the power I need to drive up and down the Peninsula. In the past, we've owned the Lexus LS, Acura RL, and recently been test driving other German luxury cars. For us, it boiled down to value and how beautiful the car is. Other Genesis cars are coming, and Luc Donckerwolke (formerly with AUDI and BENTLEY) is in charge of the entire Genesis designs. We feel we've gotten a lot for our dollar with the G80 purchase. If you're in the market for a mid-size luxury sedan, do yourself a favor and test drive the G80. Thanks me later ;). Cheers!
I recently purchased a 2016, Genesis Ultimate (Hyundai fleet vehicle with about 2k miles) with the 3.8 liter engine. I've owned BMW 5 series in addition to MB E class as well as many other cars.....I'm old. This is without question the most fantastic car I've ever had the pleasure of owning. Mike I traded the 2015 Genesis 3.8 for a 2014 Lexus GS 350 F Sport. After having some issues with the Lexus, the poor gas mileage and the premium fuel requirement, I am thinking about going back to a 2017 G80 next year.
Just got a 2015 Genesis 5.0 CPO with an exhaust upgrade, the car is rock solid (after 2 weeks in shop to replace head unit) and you better have your destination planned when you hit the gas. And it sounds great! Dump the Japanese iron and come back to a real car!
Just came across this review and I must say, it's right on point. I own a 2015 Genesis G80 and have have the best driving experience of my life. Not only is it a fantastic driving machine, but I've had no mechanical issues as of yet and really don't anticipate any in the foreseeable future. The warranty is fantastic, the price was right and it compares to the higher priced European models quite favorably. I guess what I'm trying to say is that for the money, it's the best deal out there.
Great review with the comparison notes and walk through of the car. I've compared a few luxury cars before landing on the 17-18 G80 Ultimate V6 and I no matter what car I test drove I kept coming back to the G80. It's been a good, reliable ride with dope features.
I remember when Hyundai made the Excel in the mid-eighties. I test drove the 5 speed hatchback and HATED it. The seat was hard, the shifting was rough, and the car bucked like a carriage over every bump. Well, I rented the Sonata last year and felt I was in a Lincoln. I can only imagine how this Genesis feels on the road. I did sit inside once, and was blown away by the look and feel. Hyundai deserves every accolade it gets. They've come a very long way and never succumbed to criticism. It only made them persevere. Great job, Hyundai!!

Great review. My 2017 G80 with Premium and Ultimate Packages was just delivered this week. For the price point after discounts and rebates, the G80 is a compelling value. I love this car. Your video was complete and well covered on the G80 as well as the comparisons at the end of the video. Thanks, it was great to watch.

Wow! Thank so much for such an intelligent and comprehensive review. I currently own the 2015 Hyundai Genesis 5.0 Ultimate. It's an amazing car. The only problem is the dealer experience. Hyundai needs to step up the move to Genesis only dealerships.
Thank you for taking the time to make such a highly informative video. It is March 1, 2020, and I am looking to buy a used 2017 Genesis G80 3.8. Your video was EXACTLY what I needed. So, "liked", subscribed and if my wife and I have another baby, we are going to name him/her Alex/Alexia!
i have watched many g80 reviews & yours was the most complete & detailed that i have seen....an excellent job....i just picked up the awd ultimate model & am hopeful its as good as advertised. although the biggest downside is the gas mileage, it is somewhat offset by the car using regular gas vs. premium, which where i live is about .50/gallon.....
Fantastic review! I hope people continue to care about brand so Genesis keeps its value proposition. The more accepting people become of the brand, the more expensive it becomes. We are already seen that
Hi Alex. Great review...I am really excited to see the G70 that they will release. The way the G80 & 90 are priced, that model will surely be an even better value. Hopefully, the powertrains will be legit.
I have a 2015 Genesis 5.0 and I average 21 mpg... freeway over 25. I dont know how you got 18 unless you kept it in sports mode and raced from light to light.
Freethinking Влади́мир Ask any Korean car owner about having related problems after warranty work. I can't speak for other companies, but so far my VW has never been seen twice for the same problem. Just something to think about
I don't have to ask anyone. Here's an older article but still relevant: www.autoexpress.co.uk/car-news/consumer-news/62383/german-cars-among-worst-engine-failures Car magazines have covered up these statistics, but at one point it was leaked and became a big deal in Europe. Maybe Korean cars have lots of problems too, but that doesn't exonerate the Germans. They are not reliable. It's a statistical fact.
Great review. I was trying to find someone the would compare and not just tell me what they did not like. I am about quality and value. This seems to be a good alternative but I think I will wait for the 2018 version.
Very thorough review Alex. Will be looking forward to the 2018 model review of this car. I hope Genesis brings out a luxury suv/ crossover vehicle as a step up from the Sante Fe, perhaps a GLC, Q5 competitor. conniecodger from Canada.
Car is gorgeous, I would take this over a Mercedes, BMW, Lexus or Audi the reliability is on par with Lexus or better, that nice strong V8 engine the features like a panoramic sunroof, this car blows away the competition by miles. Go Genesis even the 2009 to this new body style the past versions was magnificent.
Alex. thank you very much for doing this review. .I hope you get the new G80 sport. I'm planning to buy that car when it comes out. looking forward to your review. thanks again. Mr Zapata, CA
Alex, how does the G80 compete with the Acura RLX, because the RLX is front-wheel-drive and the G80 is rear-wheel-drive? Or does the RLX and the Acura's own TLX compete with the Lexus ES, Kia Cadenza (In top end trims of the Cadenza), Lincoln MKZ, Volvo S60, and the Buick Lacrosse?
Tricky question. Acura would like the RLX to be a 5/E/GS/XF/G80/S90/A6/CTS competitor, yet it really does fail be like any of those and instead ends up being a GS-priced ES/Cadenza alternative that comes across a quite expensive for what you get. I suspect that's why RLX sales are so slow.
How about the rlx sport hybrid? Ive read and watched some very glowing reviews about that particular powertrain combination and particularly how drastically it improved the car and their opinion on the rlx model itself.
As an Acura guy I will admit the RLX is terrible. Just an overpriced piece of garbage. If I had to choose a G80 or a RLX I would pick the G80 (specifically the 2018 sport) any day. While both aren't BMW fighter the G80 is a step above any Acura in terms of refinement/materials. No Acura besides the $150k NSX offers Android Auto or Apple car play like the Genesis lineup. The 2018 G80 Sport with the 3.3T engine should blow the RLX out of the water. The styling of the RLX is bland as they come.
i wish people who review the genesis do so on its own merits. they seem to overlook that the car is not a sport car? talk about the car features more please, for example i left my rear driver window down and was exiting the car once home and the info center told me it was down. i appreciate such a feature. this is a great car with a ton of features so just say what the car does and have. i was going to buy a 2016 M.Benz E 350 ( i owned 2 prior) but chose the genesis instead. my decision was based on features and maintenance. The genesis rides very comfortable and super smooth. love it.
Only thing missing in this good review is the unusual depreciation that hits this car when you drive off the lot (a con). If you are someone who trades their car in every three years, you may want to pass on this brand. I can find a Premium AWD near me on a 2017 with 1400 miles for $38,500 - or a hit of over $7000 miles for driving just over 1000 miles. That is really high for a premium brand car and it shows how much farther Hyundai has to go.
I thought those thing at front bumper under the headlights is the headlight washer? And the "genesis 2018 G80" you are talking about is the G80 Sport that will come out in 2018? So it's different version?
A friend of mine owns one. Decent car. he got it at dealer cost thanks to a relationship he has. really poor handling though. a heavy car. I would say the warranty is a big selling point, top end of the segment by far. it isn't trying to be the top lux car though. a humble lux car which will sell like crazy. overall a very accurate review. the fuel economy is awful though constantly filing up on long trips. but if you can afford this, you can afford the gas.
It has the right features for the class but has a decent interior for the class I think Genesis has to invest more time developing the interior to make it look more special like most of the competitions
Hi Alex, after watching your videos, I really want in for a used G80. Just have a concern here, do you know why the G80 is so much heavier than other cars in the same segment? Is it some kind of quality issue? Thanks!
Test drove a genesis, LOVED it, but I'm an SUV guy. I wonder if the reason they didn't put AWD in the 5.0 is sub 15 mpg fuel economy? That's legit awful. Will probably at least test drive the Genesis crossover when it comes out in a couple years.
And moves very quickly indeed. So much so that it will intimidate a few people on the road. I’ve had people just simply move out of my way when they see me coming up behind them spiritedly.
This is a very nice car overall and I'd no doubt buy it over a BMW or Mercedes, but that rear end looks more Hyundai Elantra than it does a luxury car.
Hi Alex, just though I'd let you know, your length comparison bar for the BMW 5 series is off. Both the old and new 5 series are significantly shorter than the Genesis G80. The 5 series belongs closer to the A6 and E Class in terms of length.
Alex, would the future Kia 900 be an equivalent of the G80? I find the latest Kia styling (like the 2017 Cadenza) much more to my linking than the G80. Of course that assumes that Kia 900 would follow the same stylistic change toward Cadenza, but I think that is likely.
Hey Alex, love your videos. I'm considering starting a car service in the upcoming year, so I was wondering which car you currently giving 10/10 for rear seat comfort (in mid-size luxury). Thanks
I'm a bit surprised that you opted to include the ES350 as a competitor but not the MKZ. I think the MKZ is arguably more likely to be cross shopped with the Genesis G80 than the ES is. The '17 MKZ 3.0T for example is very competitive power wise with the V8 Genesis, while the Lexus ES has no engine option with anywhere near 400HP, and is nowhere near as fast. Also, I think the MKZ plays the "traditional luxury/performance" thing more similarly to the Genesis than the ES does. The ES has always struck me as an Avalon for people that can't stand the coffee at Toyota dealerships, and don't want to be stuck waiting at the service desk behind some kid with his Corolla.
it only takes a different direction from Acura. It will follow Lexus like strategy of a mix of front and rear wheel drive cars. Unlike Lexus, Hyundai has not spent the money yet for a dedicated Genesis Dealership. They went on the cheap. They will have some in a few years, but it's Sold in a Hyundai Dealership, which, yes you are right, something Lexus is not doing. a new Lexus was never sold at a Toyota Dealership. Also, some FWD models, including a 3 row SUV based on the Sonata, will be available too. The Genesis is a great vehicle, but I went to see them after the media hype. Even though they are great, they don't have that special quality over the competition, like when I stepped into a 1990 LS400 in 1989. Even though Lexus is not what is was, it still treats customers right. I think that it's going to hurt resale on the Current Genesis, by Hyundai going on the cheap, and not do it right in the beginning. you need a quality channel, to sell a quality car.
Instead of spending money on dealer, Hyundai is spending it on design. Rumors about a mix of FWD/RWD cars is incorrect. Hyundai has already announced that their upcoming SUV line and their upcoming compact sedan will be rear wheel drive and will share essentially nothing with existing Hyundai models.
Toyota spent on both. If they changed plan on being just a one trick pony, it would be an error. Even Mercedes and BMW realized that you need a mix of FWD and RWD. The comment of them spending money where it counts reads of a brochure. The competition took noticed of Toyota when Lexus came out, and they also spent on a dealer network . unfortunately for Hyundai, the market will decide their fate. Being a price value is not enough anymore. Especially in this economy when Camrys Accords, and Sonatas are as good as any high priced sedan, without paying over 60k. Sorry. I've been around cars too long not to comment on their soft and half-hearted release.
I never said it was spending where it counts, it's simply spending to a different end. Hyundai has decided to spend money on unique platforms rather than finding design synergies between their volume models and their luxury models. Now that said Hyundai has said there will be stand alone Genesis dealers in the USA but at the start they will be attempting a "dealer within a dealer" strategy. Now personally I will offer my opinion that I'd rather spend on design and product than a dealer network, but I also understand that both are important. However, for the purposes of a product review nebulous value in dealer networks are impossible to define and not terribly germane. I would however argue that the market has already spoken since the G80/Genesis has outsold the Lexus GS 2:1 in 2016.
Thank you for the review, as usual, it was very informative, though it seemed you were less enthusiastic about this car vs. the 2015 version that you reviewed awhile ago. I've been checking out the Korean video reviews of the 3.3L turbo, and it looks like it addresses the lack of sportiness that has been missing from the Genesis/G80. I was heavily leaning towards the upcoming 3.3L turbo G80 as my next car, but, Kia will be releasing the 2018 GT with the same engine, and may prove to be an even better value for comparable performance (I'm willing to take a slight hit to the luxury quotient).
Beware~ I have a 2016, and it stickered at $51k. In 1 year the Kelly blue book is $28,000 lol wtf. It lost $24k in 12 months ,12,000 miles. Great car, horrid residuals due to not yet being its own brand!
In regards to your chart which shows that the Genesis G80 is longer than an Infiniti Q70 is wrong. The infiniti Q70 is longer than both the G80 and the 2017 BMW 5series. The infiniti Q70 is 202 inches long the BMW 5 series is only 194.6 inches long.
Monrowe Toussaint that's absolutely wrong I have an Infiniti q70 and just looked at a Genesis g80 today and the Genesis by far is bigger than than the Infiniti q70 inside and out
D Nice i am going to make this issue simple for everyone to see. People don't measure objects by just looking at them they do it by using an instrument called a measuring tapeline. Here are the specs of all three vehicles from car & driver: www.caranddriver.com/infiniti/q70 , www.caranddriver.com/bmw/5-series , www.caranddriver.com/genesis/g80
Monrowe Toussaint I did the same thing also but trust me I jumped in out of both because I couldn't believe it and had them parked side by side and that g80 is massive compared to the Infiniti q70. someone ain't telling the truth about their overall dimensions
I can assure you that there is no mix up. I am actually talking about the normal Q70 and as you can see on the car & driver website the test they carried out was done on a normal infiniti Q70, otherwise it would have been stated by car & driver.
Nice reviews. I enjoy watching your reviews. Actually, it is very informatic especially for the buyer to be refered. In case of G80 sports in Korea, some of the media has reported dissappointment of the driving feel, especially on the chassis and suspension system. Most of the reasons have been pointed out for the heavy weights. Even though Albert Biermann (now he is the on the position of Hyundai vice president) might have touched the G80 sport as well as the Elantra sport (naimed Avante sport in Korea), the results of G80 sports seemed to be less than the expectation, I guess from the media reviews. I hope that suspension system would be improved soon~

You definitely want be disappointed in purchasing a Genesis, it's a GREAT vehicle. I love mine even after owning it for 3 yrs
Excellent review! Genesis has a real, premium, RWD-based sedan that can legitimately compete in the midsize luxury sedan segment! Love it!
i have watched many g80 reviews & yours was the most complete & detailed that i have seen....an excellent job....i just picked up the awd ultimate model & am hopeful its as good as advertised. although the biggest downside is the gas mileage, it is somewhat offset by the car using regular gas vs. premium, which where i live is about .50/gallon.....
Best Car I ever had!
My second Genesis...first was a G70, now an old G80, one of the rarest Car in Europe.
Whenever i decide to move on from my equus, i think i’ll get one of these v8 of course
I love the G80...would definitely be my pick in the segment.
I have one and LOVE it. 12,000 miles and a delight to drive. The best car I have ever owned. Thanks Alex for another quality review.
Residuals to sell one is the worst in industry
Alex on Autos=The Hank Hill of car reviews!
I have a 2015 Genesis 5.0 and I average 21 mpg... freeway over 25. I dont know how you got 18 unless you kept it in sports mode and raced from light to light.
By far, the best review of any car I have ever seen.
I highly doubt the Audi is more reliable Alex. German engines are notoriously disappointing.
Freethinking Влади́мир Ask any Korean car owner about having related problems after warranty work. I can't speak for other companies, but so far my VW has never been seen twice for the same problem. Just something to think about
I don't have to ask anyone. Here's an older article but still relevant: www.autoexpress.co.uk/car-news/consumer-news/62383/german-cars-among-worst-engine-failures
Car magazines have covered up these statistics, but at one point it was leaked and became a big deal in Europe. Maybe Korean cars have lots of problems too, but that doesn't exonerate the Germans. They are not reliable. It's a statistical fact.
youfoundisaac maybe you got lucky. I find VW to be one of the worst vehicles out there. just over priced junk.
And Germans competitors have stupidly low powered engines for their base models unlike the Asian/American competitors.
A good, thorough review and comparison of 'like' models.
This car with the Tao V8 sounds SOOOOOOO good....
+ Exhaust mod FTW!
ouuuuuu i just got into a 2017 G80 was aiming for Gs glad made the right choice.. this car is bossed UP
You did a phenomenal job on this video. Great comparison/contrast as well as overall great information.
The only year of this car I should buy Alex.
I'm in it for the Exclusive Trunk Comfort Index.
Great review. I was trying to find someone the would compare and not just tell me what they did not like. I am about quality and value. This seems to be a good alternative but I think I will wait for the 2018 version.
a very important car for the new Genesis brand.
Gorgeous would buy it over the German competition.
you do the best reviews on UA-cam can you please do one with the g90...
Excellent, thorough review as usual.
My next car is the G80 AWD v6 or twin turbo v6.... Now I have to wait for the turbo in 2017 mid year....
Very thorough review Alex. Will be looking forward to the 2018 model review of this car. I hope Genesis brings out a luxury suv/ crossover vehicle as a step up from the Sante Fe, perhaps a GLC, Q5 competitor. conniecodger from Canada.
Does anyone actually use the ski pass through for carrying skis? Especially in a luxury or near luxury sedan?
Car is gorgeous, I would take this over a Mercedes, BMW, Lexus or Audi the reliability is on par with Lexus or better, that nice strong V8 engine the features like a panoramic sunroof, this car blows away the competition by miles. Go Genesis even the 2009 to this new body style the past versions was magnificent.
Alex.
thank you very much for doing this review. .I hope you get the new G80 sport. I'm planning to buy that car when it comes out.
looking forward to your review.
thanks again. Mr Zapata, CA
G80 5.0 is the BOMB!
Alex on Autos I really like the way you you describe every cars you've reviewed.
In Canada 2015-2016 hyundai genesis sedan only comes in awd. no rwd at all.
The genesis rides very comfortable and super smooth. love it.
Alex - any preference between the 6 cylinder Genesis and the Kia Cadenza
As usual, very good car review. Thank you Alex.
Thanks Alex, you're the best
Please include info on whether there are rear reading lights and whether there's a spare wheel (or at least space for one). Thanks.
Does the Genesis Brand offer the same 10-Year Warranty that comes standard on pretty much all Hyundai Models?
YES
Is the Genesis brand going to produce a crossover for the 2018 model year?
They will introduce it in the year 2020.
It has the right features for the class but has a decent interior for the class I think Genesis has to invest more time developing the interior to make it look more special like most of the competitions
Another awesome review, Alex!
Would love to see your review of Cadillac's CT6 in the near future.
top tier review! well done!
You don't seem as enamoured with the g80 as you were with the 2015 genesis. Is it do to with tighter competition or the higher price perhaps?
Edward Weagle I was thinking the same. Maybe because it is now a luxury brand he seems less impressed than when it was a Hyundai.
I think that might have to do with the fact that they are essentially the same car besides the DRL's when you get all of the options.
Excellent review as usual. Please review the 2018 Genesis 3.8 Sport
Hi Alex, after watching your videos, I really want in for a used G80. Just have a concern here, do you know why the G80 is so much heavier than other cars in the same segment? Is it some kind of quality issue? Thanks!
The G80 is made using steel compared to aluminum, hence the weight. Not necessarily a quality issue.
Test drove a genesis, LOVED it, but I'm an SUV guy. I wonder if the reason they didn't put AWD in the 5.0 is sub 15 mpg fuel economy? That's legit awful. Will probably at least test drive the Genesis crossover when it comes out in a couple years.
It could be, although you will be able to get it in the G90. The rumor mill says the G80/90 will also get a new twin turbo V8 soonish.
Brian Fish 5.0 AWD available in Canada
@AlexOnAutos - I'm pretty sure if you had some heat in the Brakes the stopping distance would be alot better than the figure you have.
Neat review Alex, now just review the G90.
0-60 in 4.7, that’s really moving for what that car is 😳
And moves very quickly indeed.
My next car ♥♥♥
What the heck was that @ 6:31
I can't stop replaying that moment, thank you
Sounds like a bad edit.
Is there any changes between the 2015 model and the 2017 V8 model?
As far as I can tell only the DRL are different. On the '15 they are orange and circular, and on '16 Genesis and '17 G80 they are white LED's.
Alex, would the future Kia 900 be an equivalent of the G80? I find the latest Kia styling (like the 2017 Cadenza) much more to my linking than the G80. Of course that assumes that Kia 900 would follow the same stylistic change toward Cadenza, but I think that is likely.
Comparing any car to a Chrysler is an insult
Happy New Year Alex!!
Great review! Thanks.
Hey Alex, love your videos. I'm considering starting a car service in the upcoming year, so I was wondering which car you currently giving 10/10 for rear seat comfort (in mid-size luxury). Thanks
Does the G80 have directional headlights? As in, they turn in the direction you’re steering?
No its not S class its only hyundai after all
@@Rexbraiku It does. But don't let facts get in the way of your bias/hate.
Are you going to review the Cadillac CT6 anytime soon?
alex, please do a final edition evo x review before they are all gone. choose a white or blue one.
Please review Lexus GS 350.
it only takes a different direction from Acura.
Alex on Autos yes, you are correct on the Ratio, However, the public speaks louder in Resale. I don't see it for awhile.
Great car, and value.
Beware~ I have a 2016, and it stickered at $51k. In 1 year the Kelly blue book is $28,000 lol wtf. It lost $24k in 12 months ,12,000 miles. Great car, horrid residuals due to not yet being its own brand!
Can You Review The All New 2017 Audi Q5
It's not all-new for 2017, The Q5 for 2017 carries over unchanged. For 2018, it got redesigned.
Genesis should make SUV
they will by 2020
It's definitely on the way.
Captain Carter Soon they are.
Alex, I really like your videos.
But, please change the intro music
What happened to the Equus? Another discontinued luxury model and cause for concern for anyone considering this latest offering from Hyundai.
Robert Lizinski it's going to be the g90
Before the Equus there was the Hyundai XG and it failed miserably. That's the problem, they keep discontinuing luxury models because they don't sell.
It won't be discontinued it'll get a redesign and renamed as the Genesis g90
do we know anything about the upcoming G70?
We don't know yet, but I would expect it to be a compact luxury sedan.
I don't understand why the ultimate package doesn't have apple car play
I also know Infiniti got a q70L maybe that could be the mix up because I just got the regular q70 and the L is the long base model maybe
I can assure you that there is no mix up. I am actually talking about the normal Q70 and as you can see on the car & driver website the test they carried out was done on a normal infiniti Q70, otherwise it would have been stated by car & driver.
Besides Japanese luxury brand like Lexus this is a better alternative than the German brands. good job Hyundai!! Koreans are doing great so far
I do love Genesis so much! I do love the G80 and the G90/EQ900 and I'll buy one.
♥G♥E♥N♥E♥S♥I♥S♥
I've owned 7 Hyundai cars
I'm a fan.
