Pilots don't get licenses so they can drive delivery vans. The bosses of this company need to accept that.
newly minted private pilots are a dime a dozen too. if they showed up with check rides and experience, they'd go right to the cockpit. keep in mind, these "pilots" have maybe 50 hours of flight time, compared to 3000 minimum to fly for any other airline. so buffalo is a sweet deal, if they can hang on. Especially considering its like $150 per hour that pilots usually have to pay for themselves, so that's $450,000 of their own money they would spend just to apply for any other airline, not including the $10,000-$80,000 for school in the first place. That would be 60 million Yen... just to apply.

Ok I actually work at Buffalo. I can see why they do the ramp because many guys quit within the first month because they can't handle the cold. It's its kinda a rite of passage in a way. Also everyone works the ramp whether you are flying or not.

This airline runs many of my all time favorite planes. DC3's, DC4's, Electra, C46, etc are all favorites of mine. Now if they only had one or two Constellation's it would be real awesome. The Constellation is my all time favorite.
I knew I remembered Resolute Bay from Air Disasters (a.k.a. Mayday), First Air Flight 6560. Only 3 survived. The Canadian forces just happened to be conducting the 2011 Operation Nanook exercise, which coincidentally focused on a major air disaster as the main training scenario. When they heard a report over the radio, they thought it was part of the exercise. Those 3 survivors were lucky that that exercise was taking place.

Diesel fuel isn’t highly combustable, why do they keep saying that
It is if the JP gas ignites. 1500 degrees will ignite diesel, and av gas gets mighty hot when it catches fire. Crash the plane ignite the diesel.
Either way, they dramatize way to much on this show.
Diesel fuel is a highly-combustible petroleum product regulated by the federal government because of its flammable nature. Used as a burning fuel, this chemical must be stored, transported and handled with care to avoid the risk of exposure to flame and sparks.
In the US Department of Transportation regulations classify diesel fuel as a combustible liquid. Flash point between 140°F and 200°F.
Lol how could that guy think that Tyler would give him an unbiased answer.. Of course he's gonna tell the dude that it's better for him to stay. And he even got the poor guy to feel guilty about wanting to leave. And I bet Tyler didn't feel one little bit guilty leaving his "buddy" high and dry in Hay River to go fly the DC3.
My flight instructor actually flew this very Electra (C-FBAQ) with Amerer Air in austria! Great to see these planes still going strong.
It turns out that the L-188 Electra is extremely well designed for such conditions.
I'm getting "dumbed-down" with this Buffalo Bullshit. Either buildup your staff levels or continue to play crapball with the downtrodden rampies. Were me, I'd stick Buffalo Joe back on rampie duty!

You need staff that actually want to be there and can handle the conditions. Those staff you talk about don’t come out of thin air. This is why they play crapball with rampies.
If you can't stick at a job for more then 6 months to step up, then you're not worthy either... Where I live you can go you're entire life without climbing...
I worked at ALERT in 1977. Part of my work was helping unload the Hercs that supplied them weekly. Food was great. All my pay went into my bank account down south. A little too much drama with the whole ‘soldier keeping us within 10 feet of the plane’ thing. I brought home rolls of film loaded with photos of signs saying not to be photographed. If I could get an afternoon off and a buddy we would walk to the wrecked planes from the 50’s beside the runway.
It is nice an Electra working again. I worked on Electras, as an mechanic, in the late 60s, at Eastern Air Lines

I'm watching this not only because I love Buffalo Airlines, but I lived in the north, when I was quite young.
This documentary about flying to the Northernmost settlement resonates with my life and past.
My Dad was with the RCN from around 1959 to 1969. His last station before "early" retirement (after 10 years) was in Alert. From what I learned from my dad that he was taught Russian language before being stationed in Alert. And that he was a radio controller. He told me he was trained to be on alert for Russian planes. Keep in mind this was back in the late 1960's, cold war still going on.
I am the youngest, and we were all moved up to the NWT when dad was stationed in Alert.
I now live in Red Deer, AB and papa (dad) lived with me until he passed in 2018. He would have loved to see this flight on UA-cam as I am watching now.
I would love to meet any staff and crew from Buffalo in Red Deer and share some stories, maybe some of the older crew? We moved from Inuvik to Bonnyville, AB in 1974 after living in NWT...but I still have some memories.

Every time I watch an episode of this show, I see my life back in Alaska during the 90's
Buffalo Airlines. Flying old junk that only third-world countries still fly, and treating employees the way that third-world companies treat their employees. Clearly the best of the best in Canada.
The reason they fly these older planes is because newer equivalents aren’t as good at landing on rough runways, are more robust in general, and have large cargo doors. They are tough on their employees because it requires tough men to work in these conditions. All you’ve done is expose your ignorance about the NWT and belittle poorer countries with shameful assumptions.
Third world countries can't afford these airplanes, the VERY LAST few of these all still flying are owned by millionaires like Buffalo Joe you hater 😂 not by Uganda Jesus christ

Northern Canada has a lot of features of a 3rd world country if you had ever been up there. Old junk is the only thing financially viable to do this kind of work in.

32:00. We used to make igloos (learned how from the Canadian Britannica) in the late 60's early 70's on the Saskatchewan prairies in the winter. You get 5 to 7 people inside at -40° outside and you would take your coat off. Small town 80 miles west of Saskatoon.

They actually bought a -300 just a few weeks ago
C-130s are military so they aren’t allowed to buy secondhand ones. They have to buy them brand new which would be incredibly expensive for them.

Most pilots never go through being a baggage boy and then some sort of grunt worker to fly a plane. I think Buffalo is getting the bottom of the barrel
Most pilots should. It's good to know that stuff. It gets the pilots familiarized with cargo and their plane better in other ways and other angles. Not doing this stuff and not familiarizing yourself with this stuff is why most pilots these days are useless outside of reading gauges, and running through a checklist.
@@Cramblit It really depends what you fly, where you do it, and what your cargo is. In my work I load a CRJ-200 with 2-5 metric tons of post and freigt 4 days a week. And unload when it returns. During loading, there's is a pilot writing the weights and doing the calculations while the captain sets the plane up. They sometimes help with the loading, a bit, but it's not their job. It's the job of the ground crew(in this case baggage handlers) and the truck driver(me). The pilot doing checking the load and doing the weights does ONLY that. The captain sets the plane up, does the walk around etc. When they return, it's me and one or two baggage handlers, the pilots get of the plane, brief the techie and go home. This is of course one example, Buffalo is a company that does it completely different, I guess mostly because of cutting costs when flying ancient hardware.
PS. I love the old war birds they are undeniably special and a special kind of cool, but they are not something I would ever use commercially in a country like Canada. The running costs seem way to high, and the reliability seems kind of...yeah. But I guess that's why they bit the bullet and bought 737 eh?
Most pilots don’t operate in NWT conditions. They must be toughened up. It also offers the opportunity not so well-off employees to do flight training and actually be a pilot.

You’re also forgetting back breaking work as a ramp agent/courier/and even a flight attendant on a daily 5am flight all in -40 degree temps for atleast 9-12 months before even coming close to getting behind the yoke of anything.
@@nickpapagiorgio5056 A lot of that seems like its based on starting from scratch. If Im reading their website right, multi engine IFR cert would pretty much get you in the cockpit pretty quick.

Mouth but I highly doubt that will matter entirely. They had a guy on the show from Australia with multiple ifr cert and he had over 2000 hours logged and they admitted he had more hours than any captain they had at that time on the show and he left because they stuck him in Hay River as lead ramp agent until they found a replacement for him to move to main head quarters in YellowKnife to start flying and he left the show within a couple months after picking up and leaving a great flying job to move across the world to fly with Buffalo. He gave them an ultimatum and they sent him packing and didn’t care. Everyone pays dues there first idc what the website says they aren’t going to advertise what I just said or no one will even consider applying lol I’m sure it helps don’t get me wrong and I think it’s crazy myself it’s like that.
Not very interested in these episodes i like the one when 747 falls from the sky.
