So there are some cool tricks that give you better graphics and higher refresh rates than currently possible on the Quest 2. However, if you only try this, you will get frame drops in some heavy games. So to avoid that, I will show you a third trick in this video that allows you to increase performance so your Quest 2 can handle that graphical bump better.
Remember: There is a reason the Quest 2 default settings are not as high, so don't overdo it. Restart your headset to reset all settings.

VR on! - Cas and Chary VR - Розваги
This just took Superfly from kinda playable to one of the most exciting things I've seen on the Quest 2, yet. Thank you!
This is incredible. It just gets rid of that mushy effect, very noticeable on quest's environements with distant elements like cybercity. Thank you so much, you made my day with this.
Is it for the vr without the pc
@@skycore1121 does it not tank performance
You can also run this command to reduce the brightness, which makes black levels look a tiny bit better in dark games:
adb shell settings put system screen_brightness 0
edit: (for some reason yt won't let me reply to comments anymore) This command is no longer needed, since the settings menu now has a brightness slider, and there are other controls you can get via side-loading. This command was only needed in the Quest2's early-days when it first came out, before various firmware updates that seem to have improved visuals, at least imo.
I love more darkness for Saints and Sinner.
Thnx 4 the tip
You are my hero.
Nice tip! I'll give it a try!
Yes I did it too installing an android settings app which gives you control over the brightness too. When doing so you can use a slider and change the brightness in the heaset this way you can directly see the effect and I like the better blacks a lot even when the overall brightness is a bit lower.
Would be nice to have an app running in the headset where you can change all these settings and directly see the effects maybe with some test shapes and objects so you know exactly what the changes do to the image quality.
Also the app should start automatically when reseting the headset so the settings you made are not lost.
Would be a nice project I think about it and might publish an app that can do that. Or does something like this exist already?
Found the answear to my own question when connecting the headset to sidequest you can change the settings while beeing in VR. SImply change the settings on your pc press the start buttons 2 times to switch the headsets display off and on again and you see the differences. This works well in the home menue but on the beat saber demo nothing changed so I think games can override these settings or I did something wrong.
I tested the different setting s and didnt notice any difference.
For me personaly changing the brightness levels is the most effective thing I could do myself to improve the image of the quest 2.
So refreshing to see someone actually understanding what they are doing, while explaining it all back super clearly!
Does this still work well? Like they didn't patch it out or anything?
@@nickcellini9253 Some of those changes can be done from the oculus app now and some games have been releasing updates with improved default values.
Current defaults are usually good enough. Myst, Alyx over virtual desktop, Saber beat...
You rock! I was slightly struggling with the quality of things in the distance on games in stand-alone and was wanting something exactly like this. Super impressive upgrade and you made it very easy to follow along. Thank you!
I don't know how anybody could say they don't see a difference. That difference in clarity is huge.
Read that to yourself for one second. You see what you want to see. The Q2 is native 1832x1920 PER EYE. There is no Huge difference IF there is even a difference at all. Dont confuse refresh rate with resolution. It may look smoother running at 90 hrtz but that will come when developers start producing games and apps at 90 hrtz NATIVELY without FRYING YOUR HEADSET...
@@deepspaceexplorer4265 did you watch the video? lol? it increases resolution as well
@@deepspaceexplorer4265
When they add a native option for 90hz it will be the exact option just added to the UI.
Thermals and performance aren't supposed to be an issue, the latest phones have 120hz screens and run demanding games smoothly on 2-4k screens.
They should enable the option for higher resolution if you connect a battery pack or something, so customers won't complain about a 1hr battery life thinking something is wrong with their device.
Just a PSA. on Reddit a few people maxed out these settings and have bricked their devices.. so be careful. I assume they were probably playing for excessive hours to do so though.
@Lee Hayward ya the only posts I seen where their devices bricked were on 3072 res, they had everything else maxed as well. I recon facebook still haven't fully optimized the XR2 cpu which is why they have it disabled currently.
I love you Cass, thank you for all the hard work and great videos.
Thank you for this tutorial! Helped a lot!
your channel is underrated.. it deserves more attention, i just started watching your channel last night and i’ve learned so much about vr including other channels! These type of videos have helped me decide rather i want to invest in a vr and now my decision is yes!
So glad they incorporated these settings into SideQuest, was tired of running batch files! SOOOO much better with 90hz on and the higher default resolution is just icing on the cake
Yeah, it's nice of the SQ devs :) What settings do you use?

This is now my fav VR channel, love how clear and simple the instructions are, Thank you.
clear ?? lol ok then
@@livelongandprosper70 you don't agree?
Thanks Cas. I will try this.
Thanks for the tips!
Definitely going to try this out! I tried increasing the resolution on pc with the debug tool and half-life alyx is *chefs kiss* 👌
Tried it out and it looked amazing, I was somewhat disappointed in the visuals, going from quest one to 2 but after this I’m like blown away, devs need to offer a graphical mode and performance mode! Once they unlock it for link though (I noticed the debug tool doesn’t make it as clear as the quest) it’ll be perfect!
I am never fussed about graphic detail. It is the immersion and smoothness that I appreciate more such as in a table tennis game which I play on PSVR in 120HZ and is phenomenal. Then I played it on Quest 2 at 72hz and it was awful in comparison. So I will try upping to 90hz BUT will DOWNGRADE the graphics bitrate to maintain same cpu/gpu load as I don't want to risk shorten the processor lifespan and overheat it. It's like overclocking PCs can often shorten their lifespan (live fast die young!). That's my thought on what I will try :) Thanks for yet another great informative video!
Great thoughts! Thanks for sharing. I agree, immersion and smoothness is most important for me too.
As for the cpu/gpu load, you can see from the Oculus Developer Hub what games are already running on the highest cpu/gpu level. I noticed that most games (as mentioned in the video) already run on level 4 and 3. If you use the internal recorder, both levels are bumped to level 4. So I don't think you're really overclocking anything? Maybe only if you could set it to level 5, which isn't possible. But please do correct me if I'm wrong.
@@CasandChary I'm sure you are right! It's just you did say it got hotter when you cranked up the resolution, so that sparked me on that train of thought. I am an annoyingly cautious fella, anyway, the type that not only wears a face covering to protect others around me but have a decontamination zone at my front door, lol. But as always, you are positive and reassuring, and I always appreciate that, thanks!
You’re right though. To be 100% safe, I would keep it default! :)
Props to you showing the command line functionality. So few people will go through to show the in-the-guts-of-the-system style of demonstrating how things works. Pressing a button is useful, seeing what that button does illuminates.
Thank you so much. I play onward and I have noticed a huge difference!

Thanks I didn't know about this!!
Thanks a lot, fixed a lot of issues and just better quality.
What would be awesome is if the community can put together a list of games and the settings that work without issue....EG : Tetris Effect runs beautifully on full settings (Full textures, max gpu/cpu, 90 hz etc...) I've not noticed any frame rate problems on Quest 2.
Did this the other day and increased everything to the highest. Works great when you're in the Oculus UI but some games will drop fps or create graphical glitches.
Makes media consumption and browsing amazing!
Also heats the headset up a bit more.
Perfect, useful info thanks..
1st time here and glad it popped into my suggested videos...
Going to try it in a couple of hours. Thanks for the content! o7
I saw you today for the first time, and I have to admit that 'Cas and Chary' is a really original name. Congratulations!!
Hi Cas & Chary, being a senior I will give this a go to see the difference. So every-time we shut down the headset these settings will reset? Also I am trying Synth Riders instead of Beat Saber but I need to set the squat walls higher lol I can get sown but takes ages to get back up hehehe...
Yes! If you reboot, the settings reset and is put back to normal so if anything doesn't look good, like it isn't smooth. Then just turn it on and off 👍.
People say setting 2048 instead of 2560 works well too in the comments! Might be worth a try!
This isn’t a new video but its new to me thanks Cas!
I love your setup looks perfect you did an amazing job on it
The latest Sidequest v. 19 did away with the 90 Hz option, I’m going back to v. 18
Love the videos. Can you please do a step by step tutorial on how to use Shadow on the Quest 2 so we can play PCVR games without having a gaming PC?
Yeah, I got 4 months to wait on it. But doing the time.
I keep watching your videos. They always seem useful and your presentation is great. I've finally subscribed. :-)
Great tips and love the channel
What are the new recommended settings for the new version of the quest 2?
The regular resolution is completely fine for me at the moment :) but I'm really looking forward to oculus link being upgraded.
Lkve your videos, very well done and to the point!
Thanks youve been my goto for this device as im a newbie.
Wish I watched the whole video before doing it so I knew I could just click buttons instead of putting in the whole command prompt lol
In the command prompt, you can type in any resolution that is a multiple of 32.
Never was into VR or anything vr related, but I'm finding out the second you get involved in it, the more important Cas and Chary's roles are in the youtube community.

didnt think this would make a huge difference... just played pop 1 with it set like this and holy hell. its great.
Thank you, this was so useful.
when I use 90 hertz and the increased resolution beat saber gets choppy but just using the 90 hertz alone is a game-changer 10/10 use the 90 hertz.
Graphics-wise, how different is this from super sampling in oculus tray tool? And is it advisable to use both?
i think this tutorial only applies to quest 2 standalone mode. when using oculus link, the pc/steamvr settings will overwrite the quest 2 settings. when I load up steamvr, my settings are already set to 90hz and 2x native resolution. also using VSRR technology from nvidia and it increases the focus point of vision (the center of the screen) even more if there is headway available in your pc.
for example. pavlov quest link runnning through pc, i have it locked to 90hz/fps, and my cpu is at 30% and gpu at 40% usage, so that means I have quite of bit of room to improve fidelity. so I turn up the resolution from 1.5x to 2x depending on game. Then I apply VSRR "adaptive" via nvidia control panel. pavlov, already at x2 the resolution, becomes even more clean and crisp in the center with VSRR on as it applies more supersampling to the center of the screen.

I do worry that running every game at CPU level 4 might overheat and damage the quest in the long run. But that's a cool trick.
Games that do use level 4 run fine (Duh, there's a reason it's on the store) Games that don't use level 4 couldn't really be more demanding than ones already using it. I don't see any reason to worry about CPU damage. Ive been using level 4 for a while with enhanced textures and other stuff and its doing just fine.
It's not overclocking. Just one of working level
