Hey everybody,
October look at the courtyard with some nice insights and tips on where there is colour and interest is coming from this month, along with a quick glimpse of Head Gardener Smudge going on her business.
Also, we see some of the damage done by vine weevil to the Huechera plants, and some information on how best to progress them.

Vine borer was my first introduction to a true "pest", the lava like the weevil and true bastards lol.
Courtyard looks awesome and those acers are fantastic!!

The weevils and root borers certainly present problems don't they!
Yes, capturing the splendidness of the Acer as much as possible, as we know the colder wet weather is on the way.

Aren’t they gorgeous I have a picture of my huge maple that is absolutely brilliant red ❤. Your grasses are a beautiful variety of colours Hugh. I’ll have to start collecting leaves 🍁🍁🍁 for the compost soon. Sad about the grubs I had a beautiful purple heuchera that they killed. We have a nematode called grub b gone but I can’t be bothered they just come again.

Hi hugh i do like a nice hucherra, i used to put them in my hanging baskets over autumn and plant them out in spring and reload the hanging baskets. Im tight so like perrenials over annuals.your courtyard has looked great every time ive watched. 🤠👍
Thanks Nick, yes the perennials are great aren't they. Might try some in baskets next year, maybe lessen the chances of weevils getting to them!

How very beautiful HH. I Love your potted grasses....I have the Japanese variety , it is a lovely & I have about 8 big potts full ! They all need splitting & I dread it . Will they die if I don't do it ?
PS I made your Apple Cake yesterday, it is scrummy 😋
Thanks for stopping by JV, lovely to hear from you. I do tend to put off the splitting of the clump forming ones and keep them going in the same pots as long as possible, 3-4 years with the right soil based growing medium, along with an annual top dressing. Oh yes, the apple cake is so delicious, we did some here to last weekend 😁😁🍏🍏
Yippeeeee, so I have another year before I need to do it - but I don't think I have left enough space for a top dressing, all I can do is give them a regular seaweed fertiliser I think😒 @@HortiHugo Thanks ever so much for your reply 👍
