Leo, I have to commend you on your integrity and your willingness to provide fair impartial reviews. I'm sorry I was the one to call you out on this one but as you've chosen to investigate further and clarify things it shows great character and you have my upmost respect. I've owned a number of "gaming"/ "performance" laptops over the years and most if not all have had vents on the underside. They have to dissipate a lot of heat in a small space and that ofc isn't easy. I'm not entirely sure there's a perfect solution (some people dislike side exhausts as it messes with your mouse hand as one example!) I often prop up the rear of my performance laptops when they're working hard with books, thick magazines, pencils, whatever I can lay my hands on at the time in an effort to permit extra airflow to the machine. This would benefit from the same and of course there are active and passive laptop cooling pads that could be used for maximum effect to this end. I'm not saying this machine needs it as from your review, it appears the cooling is able to cope without throttling which is most encouraging. Like it or loathe it, this is a good laptop. Any chance of an Asus gm501m review any time soon? Thanks again for your time and energy invested in your reviews. 👍🏻
Agreed. Leo rocks in this respect. And credit to you for your critical thinking capabilities and willingness to initiate polite discourse. Hats off to you both.
Leo you earned my respect for posting this correction. Not many would go through such an exhaustive explanation of cooling. Accuracy and Integrity are the mark of a true review. Subscribed. On a side note I've used dry ice to check airflow as it's inert.
Respect you for making this video... Also, I have the aero 15 with i7/7700.... Whenever i game on this laptop I sometimes after a while I attach a laptop cooler (it's made by cooler master has one big fan only.. sorry forgot the model number) ... & I guess this is when the middle vent makes sense..because the temperatures go down real fast thanks to the big fan blowing air directly on the heat pipes... The fan noise gets irritating... But i use headphones for gaming...
you are the guru 😁 tks for the all hard effort to this laptop, even its seems unfair since this "sophisticated effort" seems never been tested to other branded laptop.
Hi Leo, I’m new to your channel and find your reviews very informative, I was wondering if you will have the chance to review the 4K panel ? Maybe a 2 min review ?
If I use the laptop through a monitor with the lid closed, basically like a mini desktop, does it mean that the vent will be blocked and will have thermal issues? I had similar issues with surface book 2 which throttles the GPU when the lid is closed.
Just a heads up for the reason for the big mesh in the middle of the bottom panel, it's the only part that won't be obstructed when you use it on your lap.
One perspective I would like to see that you didn’t entirely cover in the video, is how Gigabyte advertise the exhaust to blow towards the back of the device. I thought a method of doing this could be using the same paper apparatus as in this video, but having the laptop sitting on the edge of your table and holding the paper apparatus dangling over the back fans. Contemplating my conclusion towards this laptop is hard. I know it will be used on a variety of settings, and have come to realise it may not be suitable for all. These include. 1. On a duvet - may not be justifiable as a surface such as a duvet would somewhat cover the air intake entirely, starving the laptop and thus resulting in overheating. 2. Performing with Ableton Live in an outdoor location that may be highly dusty - drawing air from the bottom and the inevitability of dust being drawn into the cooling system from the surface it is placed on, thus reducing the life of the cooling system overall. It is really hard to justify a decision on this, the Zephyrus M, or the MSI GS65 at this point in time. I have other concerns such as battery life and aRGB output as I do a fair amount of photo editing (large reason as to why I am approaching one of these notebooks) but also the variability of applications I can use it for such as gaming and general use, replacing my now outdated but somewhat surprisingly still usable (despite accidents it has dealt with, such as being sent flying twice due to irresponsible passers by) MacBook Pro Retina 2013. Albeit all thanks for this clarifying review! :)
Dear Leo, thank you for your comprehensive correction video. I have great admiration for someone who owns up to a mistake and you have gone above and beyond to help us with finding the truth. Regarding fan noise, would you say it is apparent/noisy even when idle or say watching UA-cam on Chrome? I expect the laptop to be noisy under load, but it's the idle/light load performance that concerns me more. Thank you again for this video.
I bought the Gigabyte Aero 15x v8-bk4P on Cyber Monday waiting for 1,999 USD, And I'll see how it stand up in day to day use. buying the Gigabytes Aero 15x is from Amazon or Best Buy is better value than buying it directly from gigabyte, No sale tax is applied. shop around for the best pricing and look for the ones that offers extras like a gaming bundle.
@@Identity242 I like it, I would give it a 8/10 over all for everyday use. I have the 4k model and battery life isn't excellent, I've been able 5.5hrs to 6hrs with brightness set to 35% running Revit, SketchUp, AutoCAD and Netflix concurrently. Quality is a 9/10, would have preferred a unibody build but it looks and feels solid. I did a clean install and change the trackpad to Microsoft Precision drivers. I think a good price for this laptop today would be between $1600-1800 US dollars. P. S. Get a microfiber cloth for the screen and the chassis because it's a fingerprint magnet.

Good stuff well reviewed. subbed. Isn't that cooling technique similar to Apples as I recall? I'm debating buying this laptop or the Asus GM501 and cooling is a big factor for me (well my Wife who hates the noise of my fans)
How about lighting a match, extinguish it and quickly hold it near the vents. You would briefly see where the air is flowing without filling the studio with smoke.
KitGuruTech For science! It's such a tiny amount anyway, probably better than using dry ice or a smoke machine as water vapour could be a problem. Great video though, would be good to see this in more laptop reviews going forward. I'd love to see how different thermal compounds make and impact on temperatures, although loaned equipment and all that! 😉
I am really wondering what would be the consequences of adding an extra (external) fan pointing at this middle space between the Aero's internal fans. A lot of behavior could be seen... Possibly : - you mess with the actual air flow and the cooling is a little worse. - you refresh directly on both CPU and GPU pipes, cooling is better ! - makes nothing because help in cooling but lower the internal fans efficiency... - something around all those 3 options... I guess this might be worth a try !! :D
Excellent job, Leo! Great to see a reviewer willing to own up to honest mistakes and respond to viewer feedback. For testing airflow in future, perhaps try Incense Sticks - I've seen JayzTwoCents use them quite effectively to demonstrate airflow (here: ua-cam.com/video/a12aDCxrcts/v-deo.html). Yes, they technically produce 'smoke', but it's small-scale enough to not smoke up your studio (also, it might smell nice as a by-product :P ).
Have the laptop, playing a test of BF3 with it sitting on a flat glass table one of the CPU cores maxed out at 95 degrees. While the limit for this CPU is 100 degrees, its still too hot to have a good lifespan. The other components around the CPU also need to be taken into account. I then put it on a cooling pad, and did the same test, and that dropped the max core temp down to 89 degrees. Now testing with undervolting, looking at thermal pads to put in strategic places, to use the underside as a heatsink, and if that still doesn't help, I'll look at repasting the CPU with a better thermal paste Quite a bit of effort required to bring the temps down. It's still a great performance laptop though and I haven't had it lock up or blue screen once. Happy to compromise due to the thin and light form factor, just wish Gigabyte did the work I'm having to do.
How about a strip of confetti? It's light enough that when it comes in contact with the intake vents it should stick to it. Put it in front of the exhaust vent it should be away. Another alternative could be incense, although it is actually smoke it shouldn't have that awful smoke smell, and, it normally doesn't give of so much smoke that it'll interfere with vision.
GS65 was only a preview so really cannot say at the moment however the two laptops have a great deal in common. We'll know more in the next week or two ...
Thanks for response. My GPU seems to go to 82C while streaming+gaming, CPU stays cool, I am little concerned, but don't want to install bloatware to control it.
attack in real world usage it won't be constant 82c necessarily. Design temps are higher than this though so there is headroom which indicates how capable the cooling system is.
In real world it stays around 76 doing something like PUBG, but yes, it does go to 82C during stress test, assume as summer comes, it will go up. The card is Palit 1070 ti. I was thinking it is overclocked, because core hits 1900+mhz.
Did you talk to gigabyte about headphone which was supposed to come with Pre order? They never gave to me. What to do ? Gigabyte is very hard to get hold of !
I bought the gigs Aero 15x v8-bk4P, on Cyber Monday waiting on it to be delivered. If it's better than the MSI in day-to-day use then I'll gift the MSI to a family member or keep it as a backup device.
80c be normal? That is 176 degrees in my world. Makes me think of a dell computer I have. It was billed as a desk top replacement. It would burn up keyboards regularly. Great computer other than that.
I am not an engineer so want to know if you liked the laptop or not? I need a new laptop and I only have the Dell XSP 15 to compare this to. I don't game, I would use this for content creation. I like this because it has a very fast full size SD card reader, and nobody else seems to have one. Apple is not an option. They are too expensive and frankly, out of date. I looked at the new Asus Zenbook pro but they decided to put a small battery in a 2k laptop?? Seriously?? I don't understand how companies can be that stupid when they design a new product.
Thanks. I actually did some research on QC or defect rates from many companies. I am in Japan so it is a good place to test quality control. To my Alarm, both Dell and HP have quite high return or defect rates. Gigabyte is very low. Perhaps because it is a smaller company, I don't know. It looked like a quality product when you removed the cover.
Did you just spend 15 minutes talking about air going in the bottom and out the back? Where's stuff like the power levels Gigabyte are using to power limit the package? How's that compare to other laptops in the class? What's the TDP on the cooling system? What's the max sustainable boost frequency? Does their software allow easy picking between low temperature, low fan noise and high performance?
good review... would like to see more battery comparisons (with balance power cheat turned off)....the paper is fine for basic video......pitty you don't have time/skill do to advanced tweeking (eg changeing thermal pastes)
Cannot really see the point in removing the cooler from a new laptop and replacing the thermal compound. There may be an advantage to that after a year or two but the aim is to review laptops as they are delivered to paying customers.
it's more just advanced stuff to improve cooling/quite running... as some manufactures use cheap "stable" paste and not higher quality(might be able to take off 5 degrees)..... but it is not needed for this review type..... it is a very good laptop mainly for the battery life... just no one is doing any advanced stuff to see how far you can push it with advanced tweaking
Notebook gtx1070 is always better then gtx1060 within, but it is not gameplay on ultra no... not at all, it will something like between midium & high, shadows always high... if it must be for gaming - gtx 1080 endeed afcourse... look for msi titan or some alienware, but msi is better for cooling system... axiom is not so hot - more fps in game.
You should have started the video by admitting that you had a prejudice for if this laptop when reviewing it based on seeing the MSI GS65 laptop beforehand, but you can pat yourself on the back because you got two out of it and I'm assuming quite a few views. I'm sure in the future you will take more precautions when reviewing a product or at the very least enter the review open-minded. 👍🏻
but no numbers? you say thermals but all you did is say way more than necessary about air flow and an infrared camera that just showed where the heat went which was obvious. thanks for the waste of life
you can thank your parents for that brad. seriously though how in gods name did you miss all the links to the full review? at least 5 times in the video, in the description. even in his dialogue. the main review is over here: www.kitguru.net/lifestyle/mobile/laptops/leo-waldock/gigabyte-aero-15x-v8-6-core-144hz-gtx-1070-max-q-graphics/3/ . Lol I'm glad he revisited too. Mad respect for that.
Thank you for clearing this up. Good reviewers make revisions/clarifications. Well done, sir.

Great and informative video! Could you do the same experiment with the MSI GS65? Thanks.
God I waited a while for this laptop. Very excited to pick one up when they come out.
Caleb Rasak best place your pre order soon then, I think they will shift a lot of these.
In 6-7 months, it'll get a drastically Better GPU
Caleb Rasak a pris
how do you like it
Great to know! The comparison review that I want to see the most, is between this Gigabyte 15X v8 vs Dell XPS 15 9570.
why? they are on different category, xps fan here, but it really need a redesign (writing from my dell xps 13)

The simplest and easiest and cheapest way to test direction on airflow down to the smallest changes: a feather (With all the hairs loose of course)
Great Cooling & Thermal Review

very nice review i love to buy that laptop

wbkruse13 might work although personally incense drives me nuts!
Yeah correct...confetti is great...the paper might just be too heavy to capture the flow in the regions where fans aren't present.
in my country, I had to waitlisted for almost 4 months to get my 15w. This 15x v8 is the all most tempting :'((
I've my Aero 15W last year, how come you've got yours?
Now that you have seen the 15x and the GS65, which do you prefer?
GS65 was only a preview so really cannot say at the moment however the two laptops have a great deal in common. We'll know more in the next week or two ...
Wondering how the machine would go for mobile game development. Mostly run Zbrush, Houdini and Unreal engine.
i undervolted my aero 15x v8 (-0.150mv) and my temps dropped 8°C - stable
where did you get yours? it is supposed to be released on 4/16

Nonetheless, great review
Is constant 82C ok?
Running the CPU at 82 degrees while gaming or video editing is fine. If you mean 'constant' as in mining then probably not such a good idea.
Thanks for response. My GPU seems to go to 82C while streaming+gaming, CPU stays cool, I am little concerned, but don't want to install bloatware to control it.

Wich one aero 15x v8 or msi gs65?
Great job!
Jose Garcia dude ive been asking the same question
aero. The msi tends to go throttling, just look at reviews...also better screen
Prisoner ksc2-303 little dissapointing actually. love that keyboard on the MSI. but you're definitely right
xDjinn x why?
xDjinn x LM will just ruin ur 2000 laptop
Cassette tape ribbon. Only way to go for air flow analysis.
Do you reckon that re-pasting this thing would be an easy thing to do? In the sense of actually removing the heatsink. What type of screws are those?
Its really easy compared to other laptops, if you're not too experienced might take some time not to break anything hehe
After watching your first review I went and bought the MSI instead and now I'm stuck with a laptop that's not easily upgradeable.
I bought the gigs Aero 15x v8-bk4P, on Cyber Monday waiting on it to be delivered. If it's better than the MSI in day-to-day use then I'll gift the MSI to a family member or keep it as a backup device.
THANKYOU!
