I've also done a video showing how much performance could be improved by undervolting the CPU: ua-cam.com/video/i4O1i0VUOyk/v-deo.html Since the video went up I've manually installed the ELAN precision drivers and the touchpad is working way better, the usual two finger right click is back! If you've got an Aero 15x you can give this a go by following this guide: www.howtogeek.com/325347/how-to-enable-microsofts-precision-touchpad-drivers-on-your-laptop/
I don't believe so, you'd stress the battery much more continually charging and discharging it. I've had my work laptop plugged in and running near 24/7 for over 2 years and the battery still works fine.
Thanks! Yes, that's the plan, I should be getting both of those laptops in May sometime so I'll do regular review videos and comparisons between them all.
@Dean Dollahite, I've got a GE63 7RF video coming out this week, a bit late to the party I know, but some people still wanted to see it and a comparison with the ASUS GL503VS that I've previously reviewed so I made that happen. I've asked for the new 8RF models, and MSI Australia said they need them for an upcoming event (Intel Extreme Masters in Sydney this coming weekend) and should hopefully have some laptops available after that, so in summary 7RF video coming this week, hopefully 8RF coming soon in a few weeks, which I think is actually good as then I can do a 7RF / 8RF comparison.
Jarrod'sTech sounds great man because those 8rf models from MSI look very appealing at the $2,000 price point just wondering about thermals which you normally do
You can install the EDP ELAN Windows Precision drivers from softpedia and turn this touchpad into a full blown Precision touchpad, including all the gestures we've gotten used to. This is how I run mine and I absolutely love the tapping gestures on it. So yeah, don't bother with the default mousepad drivers it comes with.
I think that dual channel memory on the aero 15x could improve performance especially in gaming. But the battery life is among the best in any laptops.
I think you should have more views, you deserve them. There is a lot of info and it is understandable and I like how the video was recorded. GJ. EDIT: Subbed ;)
I bought this laptop and could not be more disappointed. The screen has major light bleed and a weird discoloration in the top right 25% of the screen. It's like something is pressing against the screen behind the bezel. Gigabyte agreed to RMA the laptop only to keep it for three weeks without contacting me back. After several phone calls, they finally told me it was within factory tolerances. The recommended returning it to where I bought it, or I could PAY to have it REPAIRED. Total run around. If you buy one of these, I hope you don't have an issue because they do not stand behind their products.
No problem! Something I unfortunately did not cover here was undervolting to see how this affects performance and temperature, I've got a follow up video testing this coming out on Thursday if you're interested 😀
Jarrod'sTech Oh great! Yes I'll be waiting. I'm gunna buy a laptop soon but which one? Gigabyte aero 15X 2018, Dell xps 15 9570 or the Alienware 15r3 2018? All of em are good. What do you think Jarrod?
I'm more of a "decide after trying" person I guess, so hopefully I'll get a chance to test those ones and see how I like them 😛 so far I really like the Aero 15x though, hopefully I'll get some new Dell stuff later this month. As for Alienware, I've only just recently got in contact with them, I've got my first review video coming out tomorrow but it's for the last generation model, going to follow up with them if I can get some new 8th gen stuff tomorrow!
There's the MSI gs65 which is probably the main competitor, I've got a review on the channel and will be comparing it with the aero 15x in a future video 😀
Thanks! I still want to get it, and likely will be getting it some time in the next few weeks as there are some really good sales in Australia at the moment (up to $500 off!), I'll do an update video on the laptop I end up picking once I have it 😃
I've actually got a dedicated video to undervolting the Aero 15x coming out in 8 hours 😃 as for the mouse drivers, I followed the guide linked in the pinned comment on the video, I don't have the laptop anymore so can't make a video on the topic unfortunately.
While gaming in watchdogs 2 at ultra it sat around 2.9GHz at 90c, I've got a follow up video coming out next week where I try some undervolting, I was able to improve it to 3.9GHz on all cores at 85c in the same test 😃
Thanks! To be honest I'm not sure if it's available, I could find out however unless I just made a video about the screen differences it wouldn't really be worth spending days making a full review when it's otherwise the same as the one I've already done, I can usually only get one laptop at a time and I've got some others liked up already like the aorus X5 and aero 14
My guess is that it's difficult to cool 6 cores at high clock speeds in such a thin space, I was able to almost fully remove the thermal throttling and slightly improve the temps by undervolting though, I've gone over that in some more detail in this video: ua-cam.com/video/i4O1i0VUOyk/v-deo.html
Great review Jared. Do you consider that the display technology from the 15x is the same as for the Aorus x5 x7 and x9? Should the monitors on these other laptops have similar sRGB color accuracy performance?
Thanks! I haven't tested any Aorus laptops yet so hard to say, I've asked for the Aorus x5 v8 laptop next, so hopefully if I'm able to get that you'll be able to see in a future video 😃
I suspect it could help, however in other reviews I've seen the thermal throttling issues I noted don't seem to be present, so not sure if it's just my unit.
Hey mate great review, I want to ask about upgrading, so the gigabyte SSD and RAM is upgradable but I notice that three of the screw at the back are covered with warranty stickers, so is it possible to upgrade without voiding the warranty?
Thanks! Looking at what I've got here there doesn't seem to be any screws behind the stickers, so should be possible. I only didn't remove it because I don't have the proper tool to unscrew these sort of screws, I ordered a new kit last week though but I'll probably have to send it back before it arrives.
Yeah me too, although in some other reviews I've seen they didn't have throttling at all, so could just be my unit. Not the first time I've had hot/loud Max-Q graphics though 😛
Just an observation, but I’m noticing that these gaming laptop OEMs are going for a single channel RAM configuration as opposed to a dual channel configuration. Is it to save on cost? I ask this because a dual channel config is more preferred in almost every situation.
I've started to notice that too, I guess it could be to save cost, as 2x sticks typically costs more, but you'd think they'd want to take the extra cost for performance boost. I did look at buying my own 16gb 2666MHz stick to test in dual channel, but it was about $300 AUD, so not really worth it just for the purposes of a video!
Jarrod'sTech Not just that though. It seems like you need to specifically request a 2x8GB kit now instead of just making that config the base. When I got my Alienware 15 R2 two years ago, the base config for RAM was 16 GB DDR4 2133 in dual channel mode, but now if you customize the new Alienware laptop configs with the Coffee Lake CPUs, the setup is 16 GB DDR4 2400, 16 GB (2x8GB) DDR4 2666, or 32 GB DDR4 2400. When they put the 2x8GB in parentheses, it made me think that the base 16 GB RAM config Alienware offers now in its new laptops is in single channel mode, but then again, it could just be me.
Aero 15x for me, still really want to buy it but just feel like I should wait til next gen GPUs as I don't urgently need it. Mostly it's just because in terms of raw specs they're fairly similar, but the SD slot on the Aero is critical for what I'll be using it for (4K video editing while travelling). I'm going to do more comparisons with more detail between all three models though, just takes time :)
Thanks for the review. Did you find the arrow keys confusing while using the unit? I always get missed strokes when the arrow keys are just below shift and next to the keypad.
No problem! To be honest I didn't find myself using them that often, but as the up arrow does cut away from what would normally be the shift key I could see that happening. I don't personally use the numpad so would have been fine if that wasn't there in favour of better spacing.
The fan noise is quiter during real world loads such as gaming compared to many other laptops I've tested with similar specs so I don't think it's an issue unless you need to really crank up the fans, but as I showed maxing them out for me hardly helped at all. The temperatures can be improved by undervolting, I'm working on a follow up video about this and show how it improves temps in gaming so look out for that 😀
Thanks - look forward to it and an Asus ROG GM501 review! Debating on the two laptops for my wife's birthday. Undervolting and tweaking the laptop won't be anything my wife will want to do, so out of the box is what's important!
I should be getting one in May some time (probably late May but not sure exactly), I plan on making a dedicated comparison video with this one as well as its own full review video.
Thanks! I'm doing my best, you should compare to my older videos though, I think I've improved quite a bit but I know it can be better, it's difficult to change the way you talk I guess
Fair enough 😛 I know it's not perfect but figure best way to improve is just keep doing it then a few years from now should be good 👌 I've got something on the way to out behind the mic which should hopefully fix the slight echo too, I've been fighting with that for ages!
+Jarrod'sTech Great review Jarrod! Alright! More nose cam! When you were typing, I thought you had a small engine running in the background! I think the difference between single channel and dual channel RAM is massive. Though the best results come from a matched set of ram. Yes, you can add another stick of RAM, but you are far better off to buy a kit. This applies to 2, 3, and 4 channel RAM, even if you have to populate 8 slots. It does make a big difference. I guess you could buy a kit, then sell the single stick, because it still has value. RAM doesn't fail too often under normal operating conditions, and most manufacturers have good warranties. PS- My dog's doing great, and all her stitches and tubes are out now! She's back to her old self, albeit with a few battle scars!
Haha I was thinking you'd love more nose cam. I was actually looking at buying a second stick of 2666MHz 16GB memory, but it's like $300 AUD which didn't really seem worth it just for the video, I was thinking maybe I'd use 2,400MHz RAM instead if I do a single vs dual channel video, but people will probably complain either way! Good to hear about your dog!
Thanks! I know, RAM prices are criminal right now. But if you keep your eyes open, deals do pop up. If you ever come over to Canada, let me know. We'll go for a pint or twelve!
Haha sounds good! Yeah I'd buy the extra stick if I end up buying the laptop myself, but can't really justify it for a video, maybe if each video got 50x the views 😛
Another excellent video, Jarrod. Those temps seem a bit high, do you think re-pasting with a premium thermal paste might drop the temps by 5C? Also, a 120mv undervolt on the CPU should drop the temps as well. Not sure how well coffee-lake processors take undervolting though.
Thanks! I'd expect it to, given other reviews I watched didn't seem to experience thermal issues, so I'm thinking it's something in particular with my unit. I was thinking of trying undervolting, just depends on time, I need to send this back very soon and I have other things that I need to work on before they get sent back too!
Thanks! I haven't look at it too much, from what I saw it looked decent though, I was a bit unsure with the 144hz screen + 1060 combo, but I might be getting one in a few weeks for review once I send the Aorus X5 v8 back!
so ive been reading up reviews, apparently the single channel of memory casues less pefromance. is this true? should i buy 2 x 8gb or another 16gb? and where can i found 16gb sticks that are supported?
So do we only get that tasty 144hz refresh rate in the 1080 display or is that possible with the 4K display as well? Simply switch to 1080 resolution to activate higher refresh rates?
Yeah that's right, 144Hz with the 1080p display and the 4K is 60Hz. As it's the panel itself that supports the refresh rate, you can't simply change the resolution on the 4K panel to 1080p to get a higher refresh rate unfortunately, that would be useful! We're still yet to see higher refresh rate 4K panels in mainstream products yet.
Thanks for the reply man. I'm looking at this for creative work / gaming (coming from a 2015 macbook) and it's tough because the 4k has more accurate colors, but then I lose out on the refresh rates. I guess I can't have the best of both worlds, just yet. Especially losing my coveted Mac OS...perhaps I could hacintosh the Aero 15x?
No problem! I'm looking at it for the same things, as the channel grows I want to attend events etc which would involve editing 4K video on a laptop, except I'm coming from a 2012 Macbook 😛 but I don't think the stuff that I do needs an amazingly accurate display, I only just stopped using a 24" monitor that was so crap it was the cheapest option in 2010. I suppose you could try that, I've got no experience with it so can't really say. I did see a video about editing large files on the aero 15x which you might find useful if you want to get an idea of how it goes in something like Premiere a bit more: ua-cam.com/video/BjvIcEODmPw/v-deo.html
Thanks for the great review. I'm going to buy this expensive laptop, but there is a thing which i need to know. Since i've chosen a 4k version, can i change from 4k 60Hz resolution to full hd 144Hz whenever i want? I need that 144Hz but don't know if 4k version has it.
Something that I haven't found anyone mention on any of these new 144hz laptops is... what does windows and the interface in general feel like? Does it feel smoother, is it noticeable? The 120hz pro motion on the new ipads are amazing and totally change the feel of the device and was hoping for a similar experience to teh feel and snappiness of these devices with the improved refresh rate... but no one seems to mention it ?? Cheers.
I find it noticeably smoother, the mouse movement is nicer, so is just scrolling between tabs in the browser etc. It's good, but at the same time don't really call it out usually as it's probably not a good enough reason to get a high refresh rate screen alone, generally better for gaming so that's where it's discussed.
Thanks, yeah totally get it's not a big deal for everyone, but as a content creator, I'm using the windows interface all day and the snappier it feels the better for me. Cheers for the info.
Hey Jarrod, im looking at the Aero 15x and the MSI GS65. I do a lot of 4k video editing in premiere and some gaming. Both laptops with the same specs, except the Aero15x has some cooling issues, but a higher battery. Money is no issue, but which would you choose and why? Thanks man
I'm getting a GS65 in late May, and in addition to a full review video I'm also planning on making a comparison video with the Aero 15x, so at the moment I can't really say what's better from personal experience, and as you mention the spec sheet is very similar so I'll have to hold on for a proper answer. With regards to cooling in the Aero 15x, I'm actually working on a follow up video at the moment which should be out next week if all goes to plan where I test out undervolting to see if we can improve temps and performance - so far the results are looking good, I've been able to play games at 85c with all cores at 3.9GHz, compared to 90c / 2.9GHz before undervolting.
Thanks! My Dell contact told me about a week ago that they'd have them in late May, I suspect if this was a larger channel we'd get priority though, so hopefully that happens in future! I've got a Dell monitor video coming out in 3 hours or so, so I'll ask them for any updates on the laptops when I send them through a link to the video.
I'm really thinking about getting this one. What do you think taking the gtx1060 version costing 200 bucks less. Do you think the 1070 Max-Q is 200 extra bucks worth it? I'm in a hard decision between those 2 right now for my budget.
I've got a separate video comparing the 1060 with 1070 Max-Q, the difference isn't that much, and really either aren't great for a 144hz panel, would have been good with a 1070, but of course depends on the games you play. The 1060 is generally great for 1080p at 60 FPS at high settings, but of course less demanding games like csgo/overwatch/fortnite etc will run much higher and actually use the 144hz. Hard to say if it's worth it, it's about 10% extra cost right? So I suppose it depends whether or not it gives you more than 10% of a performance boost, and in the games I tested it was 5%-12% of an improvement depending on the game, so really then it just depends on whether you want to put the extra money in for the extra performance or not.
Yeah that's primarily what I'd be using it for too, considering it myself but waiting to check out a few similar laptops first 😃 I've got a follow up video next week where I undervolt this to see if we can get rid of the thermal throttling, and it was possible! Managed to get from 90c at 2.9GHz to 85c at 3.9GHz.
It would keep charging, even under stress test I wasn't able to use more power than could be provided so that battery did not drain while in use, so it would charge.
Dark Knight Gaming If you don't mind the extra weight and bulk, the x5 gives you a regular GTX 1070 (big improvement over the Max-Q version), a slightly better CPU and more spacious keyboard. As a bonus you also get the Webcam on the proper location (should this be useful to you).
Get the new Asus Zephyrus M GM501. It has worse battery life, but it has G-sync, 3ms IPS panel, Full GTX1070 (not Max-Q), better temperatures, and much more storage (SSD + 1TB SSHD).
I should hopefully be getting the Aorus x5 v8 next, so I could compare them in a future video if it all goes to plan 😃 otherwise it seems to be pretty much what Teco01ejg said.
I put a video out on the GS65 last week here: ua-cam.com/video/KVC5M1Tue_k/v-deo.html I'll be making a comparison video between the two in the next few weeks, otherwise you can get the answers from there and compare yourself.
AH. thanks. that was a quick ass reply xD appreciate it! i honestly prefer the Gigabyte design, ,but obviously have to get the one with the better thermals and performance
Jarrod, I want to suggest you something. I did some research about undervolting GPUs and tried it on brothers 1050ti Max Q laptop and got incredible results. I tested it only on valley benchmark and got 50,9 fps which is same as the full 1050ti. So please try to undervolt 1070 Max Q and you will get IMO the same results as full 1070. Also you will have decreased temperature and power consumption. Please try it and keep doing this great videos. Thank you
Hey, I've actually already made a dedicated video to undervolting the Aero 15x 😃 it's scheduled for Thursday, I got some pretty nice results there, so I'll definitely be looking at including undervolting results in future videos where thermal throttling is experienced!
I'll look into it, although from what I briefly read about it a few weeks ago it's not generally done as doesn't really seem to give as great benefits compared to CPU undervolting?
All my benchmarks are always run at stock speeds. I talk about overclocking after the gaming results, I overclocked the GPU but it didn't really make that much difference. It is not possible to overclock the 8750H CPU so this was not done. I've got a follow up video to this next week where I undervolt the CPU to improve the performance further 😃
if you place something under the bottom of the laptop to create a larger air gap for the bottom vents, does the cooling performance with the higher fan speed improve?
Just finished testing, it does make a bit of difference, as the desk eventually heats up quite a lot. On the desk it was sitting at 90c on the CPU and 78c on the GPU. While raising it up off the desk by about 5cm the CPU sits at 90c and still throttles, while the GPU goes down a bit and sits at 75c, hope that helps! I also forgot to mention that the thermal throttling on the CPU stops when the GPU load is removed.
Thanks for the detailed review. I'm looking for a working laptop for VR (using HTC Vive) development. Now I have narrowed down to MSI GE63 8RF and Gigabyte Aero 15x since their prices are similar and specs as well. GE63 seems to perform better than 15x with good cooling system. But the thickness and the short battery life are the reasons why I'm still hesitating. 15x looks really attractive to me but I'm concerting that the 1070 Max-Q can't provide enough power for VR. In addition, the poor cooling design may also reduce the reliability of the system (also the components) in a long-term perspective. My question is, which one should I get for pure working without playing games? Also, which brand has better quality (I don't want to waste time repairing my computer)? Thank you!
Higher power GPU is definitely suggested for VR, although as you mention the Aero is better in many other aspects. In my testing the ge63 got quite hot: ua-cam.com/video/i3a-fTQF0Y4/v-deo.html Of course this was under worst case load but still worth noting was hotter than many others despite max fans and all their heat pipes, suppose I could have had an unlucky unit though. Either way I'd wait til the new laptop news at CES in a few days time. I'm on a plane there right now to check out the new Aero and new MSI stuff
Hello jarrod, what do you think about the aero 15x v8 with 1060? would this be good for gaming (ultra/high)? What are the diff between the 1060 unit and the one with 1070 (other than the gpu)?
I've compared the 1060 against the 1070 in another video, basically the 1060 is great for 1080p 60 FPS at high settings in modern games, I believe that version also comes with a 144Hz screen, so unless you're playing less demanding / esports games like overwatch/csgo/fortnite etc then you won't really be able to make the most of the high refresh rate panel without the 1070.
I agree! I should have the Aorus x5 v8 arriving this coming week, when I sent the Aero 15x back I asked to get it next from Gigabyte and I think they sent it on Friday, so I plan on doing a full review video like this one and a comparison with the Aero 15x too.
Yeah that's the Aero 15 I think, so no X. From what I can tell it's essentially the same but with the 1060. In theory the 1060 may run cooler, hard to say for sure, the laptop 1060 has an 80W TDP while the Max-Q 1080 is listed as 80-90W, would need to test to really say for sure, if it did run cooler then in theory the fans would be a bit quieter too.
I am almost ready to pull the trigger on the Aero but the Razer Blade is very tempting, Price is not as important to me as reliability. I have had hands on many of the latest Laptops, The metal cases are more appealing to me, Asus, Acer, MSI, HP, all feel cheap, Alienware is huge and heavy. I have read a lot of reviews saying that the Aero crashes and has driver issues? My usage will be less game play and more video rendering and playing, mixing, videos (I am a full time DJ/VJ) on external monitors at hi-res. One bonus from the 15X over the RB is that you can upgrade memory and SSD without having pieces leftover, a real money saver as I need a 2.5tb machine. I will say that if it had a 2.5 bay I already have a hdd for that but all the models that have the hdd bay are either older models or are 17". I really just want to know about the reliability. My current model is and Alienware 17 i7 2820 gtx460 512ssd 2tb hdd, it has run its course and is having 8 beeps until I smack it a few times, then it works flawlessly for the rest of the night. Would love your input. Thanks.
Reliability is unfortunately one area I can't really comment too much on, as with review units I'm not able to keep them and only use them for a few weeks before sending back. In my time I had no issues with the Aero 15x, however I recently got one of my own for video editing (ua-cam.com/video/bASY_WR-Rps/v-deo.html) so hopefully I might have some more data in the future on at least the Aero, but for now I've had no issues in the last couple of weeks.
Thanks! To be honest the 7700HQ is still going to be fine for some time to come unless you really need the extra two cores, but I'll look at that in more detail when I do a video comparing the two. The only reason I haven't already done one is that this laptop is single channel and I don't have any extra 2666MHz memory to make it dual channel to properly compare with the 7700HQ results I've got, I did consider buying a 16GB stick but it was about $300 AUD so figured it wasn't worth it for a video and should just wait until I can get another 8th gen laptop. I still use my 6700HQ laptop for work every day and it's fine for me, the slight single core boost of the 8750H would help a bit but probably not as much as just getting better graphics instead.
Jarrod'sTech mmm . I am waiting for the experience of the device with extra memory .. Which is better in your opinion 7700hqwith gtx 1070 vs 8750 with gtx 1060 ?? for gaming and 3d modling ..
I haven't done 3d modelling in many years now so not sure how CPU intensive the software is these days, my guess would be that it's more GPU accelerated these days? If so the 7700hq/1070 could be a good choice, although personally I'd get the 8750h/1060 as to me and what I do the 1060 is pretty great and fairly powerful for games, and for rendering video it doesn't seem to make too much difference between those two GPUs.
This means I purchased the wrong option msi gt62vr 7re. I will buy 8750 in the coming years. I did not have enough money to buy a device with an 8750h processor. thank you very much 🙂🙂🙂
How is the fan noise when gaming and in general between this and the blade? Or just in your opinion if you've had it for a while now. And if you had one choice, 144hz or 4k :) thanks and one more question. Shouldn't the 1070 mq be easily getting 140fps in overwatch, fortnite? I was getting that on my blade 15
I haven't had the new blade yes so can't compare, although once I do get it (hopefully in a couple weeks) I'll be doing a comparison video of it and the Aero so hopefully I can let you know then. I'd personally go 144Hz, 4K has many issues, I've done a whole video on it 😛 basically uses more battery power, even if you run it at 1080p the extra pixels drain power, also random issues with Windows scaling when connected to an external monitor, I'll just take the smooth refresh rate.
Jarrod'sTech thanks for the quick response! I didn’t know you’d already done a video on the 4K model! That’s so weird. Hmm I may need to go with the 144hz then :) 1080p just isn’t sharp after coming off a Retina display. I wasn’t a fan of the Razer Blade 15 because of the 1080p. Still had trouble reading everything
Yeah fair enough, I guess it depends how sensitive to that you are, no issues myself with 1080p at 15 inches, maybe kind of noticeable at 17" but even then only if I sit pretty close.
I don't think I'd pay that much extra, the difference isn't that high to justify a 20% price increase in my opinion - depends what you're using it for I guess, for me 1060 is plenty.
How did you test the idle tempreture? I used AIDA64 and HWiNFO and SpeedFan at the same time on my Aero 15X and AIDA64 and HWiNFO reports an idle tempreture of 45℃ while SpeedFan reports 32℃ (all of them are core tempreture readings). The keyboard feels a little bit warm so I guess it was SpeedFan that reported wrong numbers, which leads to a problem of my Aero 15X being too hot in idle. Since purchace I've installed a bunch of softwares so it's hard for me to tell if there's some creepy background process eating up my CPU usage and making it hot. Any advice is appreciated, thanks!
I use HWInfo, speedfan always seems wrong. I test stress test with both Aida64 and the heaven benchmark running with maximum settings at the same time to try and fully utilize both the CPU and GPU at the same time. I have a video talking about fixing temperatures with undervolting on the Aero 15x here if you're interested: ua-cam.com/video/i4O1i0VUOyk/v-deo.html I also just bought some Kryonaugt paste, and will upgrade the Aero 15x in a future video, so I'll include how that helps improve thermals in that video 👍
No problem at all! Repasting would be the next step, or maybe a cooling pad but I found they didn't help much in a recent video, but will of course vary between laptop and I haven't yet tested the Aero on that.
@@JarrodsTech I've found a thread here forum.notebookreview.com/threads/the-gigabyte-aero-15x-2018-improvement-guide.821546/ saying that the stock thermal paste did a lame job, and I quote "With the stock TIM and normal fans, the cooler fans were audible at idle. The CPU temp at idle fluctuated between 49 to 53C, ambient temps being 28C. Having IC Diamond applied, the CPU temp idles at 34 to 38C and the fans are completely quiet, even with the ambient temps being at 30C." which is quite the same as what I've experienced. I've ordered some Thermalright TF-8 (rated at 13.8W/m.K) paste and plan to do a repaste soon. If that doesn't help, I plan to do a full system wipe and reinstall clean stock Windows instead of the Gigabyte OEM version, and test the thermals before installing other apps. By the way, I've successfully undervolted my Aero 15X at -135mV without any problem. It can go lower but I've decided to keep some safety margin.
@@JarrodsTech About laptop cooling pads, they are pretty useless because the air would just escape from the sides instead of actually pouring into the computer's intakes. Cooling pads generally just cool the bottom of the PC, not the internal components. An easy solution is duct-taping some foam around the cooling pad, providing proper seal so that the cold air can acutally get into the computer.
You can change the RAM/SSD, but the GPU/CPU is soldered to the motherboard. Unfortunately when I had the laptop I didn't have the necessary screwdriver bits to open it up, but I've since bought them so should be showing that more in the future.
I should be getting the GS65 in May sometime, I plan on doing a comparison video between the two as a lot of people have asked about the differences, so hold on!
Hello, im planning on getting this laptop with the 4k screen for gaming and editing 4k videos. If i turn down my resolution to 1080 for gaming, will i gain the 144hz or will it still be 60hz?
I don't understand why it's impossible to put the webcam at the top. The bottom bezel is the size of.. a damn big bezel. Maybe for lid thickness? That said I don't care. I am seriously considering getting one of these, just waiting a few months for more manufacturers to come to market with similar designs.
Aero for me because I need the SD slot, otherwise probably the blade, although possibly less performance due to the power limit throttling, I'll compare them in a future video so I'll note my conclusion in there once I've had time to go through all the differences in detail
I'm not certain about this as I did not test it myself, but I believe it should be possible via the mini displayport as that's connected to the Nvidia graphics, assuming the external monitor supports G-Sync. I'm not certain though, so probably best to do some more research into it to confirm. forum.notebookreview.com/threads/aero-15x-and-external-monitors.815514/
Cheers! I've actually got a video on the GE63 7th gen coming next week, I've asked about the 8th gen stuff but it's a few weeks away it seems as MSI Australia need the laptops for an upcoming event unfortunately, so a bit late on my part with the 7th gen but a lot of people wanted to see how it compared to the ASUS GL503VS, so doing a video on that with it too.
Hard to say as I don't have that one, I don't think the difference would be that great, I have an older video comparing the battery differences between 1080p and 4K which might be useful to give you a general idea though: ua-cam.com/video/yVUXgaw7z0U/v-deo.html
Jarrod'sTech thank you bro! I'm going to buy a laptop for my university studies, and also for video, photo editing and gaming, so i'm searching for the better balance between performance, color accuracy and battery life! I love the xps 15 laptop, but that 1050ti is quite a bottleneck! This gigabyte seems nice, i will see the price when they will release it here in italy
No problem! Yeah it's a very nice laptop, I'm working on a follow up video at the moment, it seems like with undervolting I can get full performance of it too 😃
Jarrod'sTech i would like to know your opinion in comparison with the XPS, i know they are a little bit different but i just really don't know how a 1050ti could actually compromise the performance on activities like video and photo editing or gaming, and actually i don't even know if a 4k panel on this gigabyte would compromise the battery life while working or using it as a daily or study use laptop
I've only tested the XPS 13, not the 15 yet, but from my time testing with that it seemed like a very nice laptop so I assume that carries onto the 15. I'd think a 1050Ti is generally a bad idea for a 4K panel, although you could run games at 1080p and that would be ok, I've got some videos comparing the 1050Ti with other graphics options in laptops which might help you out. While studying etc the graphics card should not be in use (unless you have G-Sync), so battery life should be alright in that regard as the Intel integrated graphics will kick in, but yeah the panel itself will use a little more to power the extra pixels, although it's not really that much, and laptops like the Aero 15x have quite large batteries too.
You can try increase the power mode in their software, but basically that's going to happen with most laptops - battery power just can't provide enough for high levels of performance.
@@JarrodsTech Thanks for the prompt reply. I tried switching to balance mode (windows) and balance on gigabyte software which increased it to 1.1 ghz. I understand about the battery, but that is major handicap. It's been a while since I bought a laptop (MSI gs70, bought 2014 - sold it) but I don't remember it crippled to an extent of the aero 15.
After 1 week with this beast, I think the components work together very well. BUT(!) the thermals are horrible at best. Even at light loads the fans are audible and all cores sit at around 50 to 60°C. I guess I'll try and re-paste the thing. I hope it'll improve things...
That should help, you might be interested in my video coming this Thursday! It's about undervolting the Aero 15x and I share how it improved thermals and performance 😃
This looks great. How is build quality? Is it better than Asus? I almost bought an Asus until I picked it up-had a plastic kinda feel to it. Still waiting for new XPS 15 to compare
For someone who doesn't mind playing on High settings, enjoys the casual modern game once in a while (ex: AC Origins, Monster Hunter Online PC, Ghost Recon, etc) and is currently playing Warframe, FFXIV and CSGO do you think a GTX 1060 for this laptop would last me for the next 3-4 years ?
Hmm hard to say, 1060 is really decent at the moment, but it's already 2 years old, and difficult to guess how future games will perform as it depends on the hardware that gets released, I reckon it will be good for a few years though, but purely personal guess.
Thank you for the quick answer. I'm just wondering if it's a worthy £250+ investment, but taking my past and present games selection I might say it's not. I do just fine with a gtx 1050ti on my desktop so the around 30+ % increase on the gpu might be enough for 3 years at least, even if I have tweak some game settings. Thank you once again :)
Yeah I tested it twice, it could be possible that my tool is bad although I doubt that. I never actually saw the 1080p model advertised as 100% sRGB, do you have a link for that? On the website, as shown in the screenshot in the video, I only saw that listed for the 4K panel?
I was literally about to buy this laptop because of your review Great review, But for some reason I can’t find any information on the screen ms response time I try googling it and is driving me crazy Can you help with that ?
Honestly not really sure, if they don't specify (most of them) they generally aren't great. This had the panel LGD05C0 so you may be able to look that up and find out that way. I think this is it? www.panelook.com/LP156WFG-SPF2_LG%20Display_15.6_LCM_overview_36617.html listed as 5ms.
Jarrod'sTech That’s what I figured there usually between 3ms and 5ms , I just dint want a 32ms lol Newegg has them on sale right now for 1,749 free bag pac 512gb 1070 ima end up buying it .. Thanx agin and ur fast comment reply’s
I don't think so, you'd be killing the battery much more by continually draining it and recharging it. I've left my laptop on and running 24/7 during week days for 2.5 years and still no issues with the battery. Once it's charged the laptop just gets power from the wall
Gigabyte has done a great job on the laptop! I think they could've just got rid of the camera as it's poor. Temps are a bit high though. Odd the noise should be lower because the Max q series were given a dB limit by nvidia with default fan curves. Ssd has great speeds! Normally you'll get sata connection speeds on them but these results are actual m. 2 speeds. Great review Jarrod! I'd reckon upgrading to this laptop would be awesome for you especially going from a 970m!
Thanks! I guess better to have a potato cam than none at all 😛 this isn't the first Max-Q laptop I've had louder than expected noise levels, I guess there's only so much you can do when putting it in such a thin body though, always going to be compromises. Yeah it's an NVMe SSD rather than SATA based and the speeds are actually quite nice! I'm imagining video editing on it now 😎
Whatever you choose it going to be baller! And the i7 8750h paired with the nvme m. 2 will be perfect for video editing. I'm guessing you'll add 32gb of ram. The Max q 1070 also paired with the i7 8750h will work harmoniously in games.
Indeed, completely aware of that, but you'd expect with less power it would run cooler and by extension quieter, as per the entire point of it. I feel like I read something somewhere about Max-Q laptops being validated by Nvidia, although I can't find it now and it was probably wrong anyway given the measurements I've taken.
Hmm I suppose the Metabox laptop is a bit cheaper, and has full 1070 rather than Max-Q, but it's also 17 inch personally I prefer smaller, the 6 core CPU in the Aero is also going to be better depending on the tasks you do. PA70HS-G is pretty nice and I've got a full video on it too, but for my own personal needs I'd be getting the Aero myself 😃
I've also done a video showing how much performance could be improved by undervolting the CPU: ua-cam.com/video/i4O1i0VUOyk/v-deo.html
Since the video went up I've manually installed the ELAN precision drivers and the touchpad is working way better, the usual two finger right click is back! If you've got an Aero 15x you can give this a go by following this guide: www.howtogeek.com/325347/how-to-enable-microsofts-precision-touchpad-drivers-on-your-laptop/
This or rog gx501? Please!
I plan on covering that in a future video!
Thanks! Looking forward to seeing the video soon.
Is it true that if I keep my lap plugged in the battery life decrease??? I was always told not to charge my battery once it reach 100%
I don't believe so, you'd stress the battery much more continually charging and discharging it. I've had my work laptop plugged in and running near 24/7 for over 2 years and the battery still works fine.
Great review! Can you also do a review on the MSI GS65 and ASUS GM501 along with comparing their thermals and performance to the Aero 15X?
Thanks! Yes, that's the plan, I should be getting both of those laptops in May sometime so I'll do regular review videos and comparisons between them all.
Another vote for comparison with MSI GS65. I'm in the market right now and would like to see how they compare to each other.
Jarrod'sTech what about the MSI 73 and or 63 raider rgb especially since they have full gtx 1070 capabilities
Yeah that's a good idea, I'll give that a go!
Just installed it, so much better! I'll stick an update as a pinned comment 😃
Jarrod'sTech Glad I was able to help. Enjoy your new touchpad.
Robert Coldbird, can you please point out the driver to download. When I search, nothings coming up for EDP ELAN. Cheers
Would that work with metabox laptops.
I think that dual channel memory on the aero 15x could improve performance especially in gaming. But the battery life is among the best in any laptops.
Yeah it could, if I was buying it myself I'd probably add in another stick for that gain.
wow this laptop is amazing. your review was very thorough and well made. thank you
No problem! Cheers 😃
Jarrod'sTech is this laptop very good for gaming and stuff like will it get at least 140 frames when playing fortnite and other games?
I think you should have more views, you deserve them. There is a lot of info and it is understandable and I like how the video was recorded. GJ. EDIT: Subbed ;)
Thanks! We'll get there one day with support like that! 😃
OMG you are a legend, cheers Jarrod. Loving approx 13:28 in. Haha! I'll add this video to our Aero 15X webpage if that's OK. Cheers
Kris
No worries mate!
BTW, I recall you mentioning that you are considering one of these yourself. If so I'll sort you out a great deal :)
Best reviewer and reseller in one place! Typing on my brand new 15X right now - couldn't be happier... Such an excellent machine!
Great review mate
Thanks!
So far this laptop seems perfect for me planning to get it in a couple months.
Me too! I just want to see how some others like the GS65 compare first 😀
I bought this laptop and could not be more disappointed.
That doesn't sound very good, definitely not a problem I had in the one I tested ☹
wow can u post pics of the lightbleed ?
Damn I am impressed. Great review with detail that I rarely see in other tech review videos. Keep it up!
Cheers!
Great review like always❤
Thanks!
Good review my mate☺️😊
Thanks!
Jarrod'sTech ☺️
That was a full review. Wow. Thank you
Jarrod'sTech Wow thanks Jarod! I'll wait for your video :)
Very good review my friend
Thanks!
Is it still good now? im about to buy one
I am seriously considering purchasing this laptop. Have there been any other releases from competitors since you've posted this video?
There's the MSI gs65 which is probably the main competitor, I've got a review on the channel and will be comparing it with the aero 15x in a future video 😀
Jarrod'sTech thank you for the information and the fast response. I will research the gs65, hopefully it’s as thin and as aesthetic as the 15x
Yeah it's quite thin too, actually a little lighter than the Aero 15x 😃
Great review thx
No problem!
Awesome review and info. Did you decide on this as your daily driver yet? If not, how come?
Thanks! I still want to get it, and likely will be getting it some time in the next few weeks as there are some really good sales in Australia at the moment (up to $500 off!), I'll do an update video on the laptop I end up picking once I have it 😃
Hey ! Is this the AERO15-1070-BK81 model? Cheers!
Finally, a laptop with a decent monitor. Your video pretty much summed up my thoughts, though I'm not in the market for buying a laptop at the moment.
Always fun to watch anyway, at least I watch a bunch of other tech videos on stuff I'll never buy 😛
Thnx bro I liked ur video keep it up bro wish to see more more love from India
Thanks! More on the way 😀
Finally, a great usual full review, GS65 next please, and compare with this
Cheers! I should be getting that one in May some time 😃 I'll be comparing the two once I get it as well as doing a full review.
Hey Jarrod can you make a tell me your undervolt settings? Also can you make a separate video on installing the ELAN drivers? Thanks in advance.
I've actually got a dedicated video to undervolting the Aero 15x coming out in 8 hours 😃 as for the mouse drivers, I followed the guide linked in the pinned comment on the video, I don't have the laptop anymore so can't make a video on the topic unfortunately.
am I the only one who always wonder who wins between fire and ice fighting? ohhh and GREAT Review :) but the price is xpensive
Thanks! Yeah definitely costs a bit to get all these nice features.
12:50, so 3.1GHZ on the CPU with all CPU cores fully taxed, while gaming also? That's not bad at all.
While gaming in watchdogs 2 at ultra it sat around 2.9GHz at 90c, I've got a follow up video coming out next week where I try some undervolting, I was able to improve it to 3.9GHz on all cores at 85c in the same test 😃
7:00 What was the clockspeed of the CPU when running AIDA64 on all cores + Heaven at the same time without undervolt? thank you
2.9GHz on all cores at 90c.
Does this laptop have 1ms response time and how do you turn it on for games?
Does this laptop have a battery charge limit option?
Hello that's the best review made of the Aero 15x so far, it is possible to review the 4K model please?
Jarrod, I have this laptop too. Why is the CPU running so hot under load? Mine does this too. It seems strange no?
My guess is that it's difficult to cool 6 cores at high clock speeds in such a thin space, I was able to almost fully remove the thermal throttling and slightly improve the temps by undervolting though, I've gone over that in some more detail in this video: ua-cam.com/video/i4O1i0VUOyk/v-deo.html
Are you planning to test the new ASUS Zephyrus M? I'm curious to see how it compares with the Aero 15X and the MSI GS65.
Yes 😃 I should either be getting it tomorrow or early next week! I'm going to do dedicated comparison videos between it and the Aero 15x and GS65 too.
That's great! Looking forward to it as it should help me decide which one to get.
I'm deciding myself, so also really keen to compare them asap 👌
Great review Jared. Do you consider that the display technology from the 15x is the same as for the Aorus x5 x7 and x9? Should the monitors on these other laptops have similar sRGB color accuracy performance?
Thanks! I haven't tested any Aorus laptops yet so hard to say, I've asked for the Aorus x5 v8 laptop next, so hopefully if I'm able to get that you'll be able to see in a future video 😃
With that kind of temperatures, would this laptop need undervolting and repasting of thermal paste?
Good to know mate! I notice that the right shift key light is off all the time, is that normal?
Kind of surprised it was so hot and loud. Thought Max Q was all about quiet and cool laptops.
Yeah me too, although in some other reviews I've seen they didn't have throttling at all, so could just be my unit. Not the first time I've had hot/loud Max-Q graphics though 😛
Liked and subbed ! You deserve more subscribers, Thank you for the amazing review.
Cheers! No problem 😁
Hey Jarrod can you make a video about how ambient tempratures effect laptop temps? this would help people who live in hotter climates.
Hmm might be possible, I've got a room with airconditioning so could look at that!
When they put the 2x8GB in parentheses, it made me think that the base 16 GB RAM config Alienware offers now in its new laptops is in single channel mode, but then again, it could just be me.
amazing review!
Thanks!
Now that you’ve reviewed this, the GS65 and the RB15, which would you upgrade to if it were your money?
You've had it a bit - I've read reviews that the fan noise and heat are both sore points. Thoughts?
Thank you mate . How about GS65? I'm comparing these two laptops.
I should be getting one in May some time (probably late May but not sure exactly), I plan on making a dedicated comparison video with this one as well as its own full review video.
That would be great ! Thank you mate
Really great review, very helpful indeed. Only suggestion would be to sound a bit less like you're reading off a script. Otherwise great work!
Thanks! I'm doing my best, you should compare to my older videos though, I think I've improved quite a bit but I know it can be better, it's difficult to change the way you talk I guess
+Jarrod'sTech oh I believe it, this is only the second video from you I've watched but ya I totally understand, I'm sure I'd be much worse myself lol
Fair enough 😛 I know it's not perfect but figure best way to improve is just keep doing it then a few years from now should be good 👌 I've got something on the way to out behind the mic which should hopefully fix the slight echo too, I've been fighting with that for ages!
Thanks for the review and benchmarks!
This laptop is near perfect on paper. How strong is the lid? Does it bounce while typing?
No problem! I show the screen flex in the video but for the most part it seemed decent, I don't recall it moving while typing.
I was thinking of trying undervolting, just depends on time, I need to send this back very soon and I have other things that I need to work on before they get sent back too!
hey great review, whats your thought on the aero 14 version for content creation?
Thanks! I haven't look at it too much, from what I saw it looked decent though, I was a bit unsure with the 144hz screen + 1060 combo, but I might be getting one in a few weeks for review once I send the Aorus X5 v8 back!
Jarrod'sTech thanks
No problem 😃
Great review! Very informative and useful, keep up the good work! 👍👍
Thanks! 👌
so ive been reading up reviews, apparently the single channel of memory casues less pefromance. is this true? should i buy 2 x 8gb or another 16gb? and where can i found 16gb sticks that are supported?
No problem! No you can't, if you get the 4K 60Hz it will always run at 60Hz regardless of the resolution, so 1080p 60Hz.
No problem! The 240Hz monitor I noticed was a noticeable difference above 144Hz in Windows too, it was insanely smooth!
Jarrod'sTech awesome. Looking forward to seeing it then
When will we get a dell G series review? Great video btw!
Great review ! Can you do a review of the new Dell G7 15 ? I am intending to buy it .
Thanks! Yes, I should be getting one in late May!
So I suppose it depends whether or not it gives you more than 10% of a performance boost, and in the games I tested it was 5%-12% of an improvement depending on the game, so really then it just depends on whether you want to put the extra money in for the extra performance or not.
how loud is the keyboard, is it good in a quiet classroom?
I'm using it right now to type this, it's pretty silent. The keyboard seems about average, a bit clicky perhaps but not that bad I don't think.
Thanks for the great detailed review. I don't care about gaming but the content creation aspects are pivotal to me. Highly considering this laptop.
Hi Jarrod which power supply did you get with your device?. I received a 180 watt power supply which does not make sense for me with a 1070
I had a 180w power brick too, didn't have any issues with it, it's a Max-Q 1070 so it uses less power than the full 1070.
did the laptop keep charging while gaming on full load or did it drew power from the battery as well?
It would keep charging, even under stress test I wasn't able to use more power than could be provided so that battery did not drain while in use, so it would charge.
Should I get this or the arous x5 v8?
Thanks
@@xboxherogoose521 And it's all Plastic, feels cheap and will look a hundred years old in 6 months.
Hey this vs MSI GS65 which is better??? which has better thermals?? PLS REPLY FAST.
I put a video out on the GS65 last week here: ua-cam.com/video/KVC5M1Tue_k/v-deo.html
I'll be making a comparison video between the two in the next few weeks, otherwise you can get the answers from there and compare yourself.
AH. thanks. that was a quick ass reply xD appreciate it! i honestly prefer the Gigabyte design, ,but obviously have to get the one with the better thermals and performance
Yeah true,I personally prefer the Aero 15x our of the two
Were the games tested with power plugged in?
I only test while plugged in for best performance.
11:16 since when is a game, based on rng a esport?
Since thousands of people started watching other people play it in a professional environment like other sports, I guess.
How are your idle CPU temps around degrees 35C? Mine are around 50C with the same specs according to HWinfo64. My ambient room temperature is 20
Do you have rubbish running in the background?
Jarrod'sTech thank you, you are a real pro. Did you undervolted also GPU?
Nah I didn't, although I was still able to overclock it by 200MHz and get decent temps, as the undervolting of the CPU lowered the temps of both.
Jarrod'sTech oh that’s a pity, but could you do that please in future? Believe me you will be surprised by the results.
I'll look into it, although from what I briefly read about it a few weeks ago it's not generally done as doesn't really seem to give as great benefits compared to CPU undervolting?
Nice Review.. Keep up the gud work...
Cheers!
Do you overclocked the cpu and gpu when you do the benchmarks?
All my benchmarks are always run at stock speeds. I talk about overclocking after the gaming results, I overclocked the GPU but it didn't really make that much difference. It is not possible to overclock the 8750H CPU so this was not done. I've got a follow up video to this next week where I undervolt the CPU to improve the performance further 😃
Jarrod'sTech thank you 🙏
if you place something under the bottom of the laptop to create a larger air gap for the bottom vents, does the cooling performance with the higher fan speed improve?
I'll test it out today and get back to you!
In my testing the ge63 got quite hot: ua-cam.com/video/i3a-fTQF0Y4/v-deo.html
Of course this was under worst case load but still worth noting was hotter than many others despite max fans and all their heat pipes, suppose I could have had an unlucky unit though.
Thanks for the reply.. what about the Aorus x5 v8? what would be better to buy between Aero 15x v8 vs Aorus x5 v8?
I agree! I should have the Aorus x5 v8 arriving this coming week, when I sent the Aero 15x back I asked to get it next from Gigabyte and I think they sent it on Friday, so I plan on doing a full review video like this one and a comparison with the Aero 15x too.
you have also a version with gtx 1060. Will the fans if you are gaming be louder or be quiter ??
Yeah that's the Aero 15 I think, so no X. From what I can tell it's essentially the same but with the 1060. In theory the 1060 may run cooler, hard to say for sure, the laptop 1060 has an 80W TDP while the Max-Q 1080 is listed as 80-90W, would need to test to really say for sure, if it did run cooler then in theory the fans would be a bit quieter too.
Yes, typo, numbers are right next to each other.
Yes, do please post about whether the touchpad uses Windows Precision drivers, Symantec or ELAN since its kind of big deal for many people!
Yeah I'll try mention it going forward, this was the first time that I did.
I've just installed the ELAN Precision drivers and it works great! I'll stick an update as a pinned comment.
Thnx that fantastic review. Do you recommend that people who have a laptop with 7700hq processor replace it with 8750h?
I did not have enough money to buy a device with an 8750h processor. thank you very much 🙂🙂🙂
No problem! As long as it works for you then that's all that matters.
Which do you prefer between this laptop and the MSI GS65 8RF?
Personally I prefer the Aero 15x, but I'll be doing a dedicated comparison video between the two soon.
That's awesome to hear as I'm currently trying to decide between them. Thanks for replying!
No problem!
It could also be the blades software that made the text look blurry. I've honestly only used Macbooks, Alienware, and the blade for comparison.
is it better than msi gs65? if yes i am buying this over my gs65 just for the build quality
In my personal opinion yes, though it does cost more. I've actually got a whole video comparing the two here: ua-cam.com/video/VfWf3ZQZXwk/v-deo.html
is the 1070 max q worth it for an extra SGD500 over the 1060 option? or isit more worth to get another SSD
I don't think I'd pay that much extra, the difference isn't that high to justify a 20% price increase in my opinion - depends what you're using it for I guess, for me 1060 is plenty.
@@JarrodsTech thanks! heading down to buy thw W8 model tmr may buy an additional 500gb ssd
Cool, hope it goes well!
@@JarrodsTech thanks! the 500gb samsung 970 is going at ard 149 rn!
I have a video talking about fixing temperatures with undervolting on the Aero 15x here if you're interested: ua-cam.com/video/i4O1i0VUOyk/v-deo.html
I also just bought some Kryonaugt paste, and will upgrade the Aero 15x in a future video, so I'll include how that helps improve thermals in that video 👍
@@JarrodsTech I did the undervolting following your video. Thanks for the quick response!
Can we upgrade this laptop?
You can change the RAM/SSD, but the GPU/CPU is soldered to the motherboard. Unfortunately when I had the laptop I didn't have the necessary screwdriver bits to open it up, but I've since bought them so should be showing that more in the future.
Should I get this or the msi g65
I should be getting the GS65 in May sometime, I plan on doing a comparison video between the two as a lot of people have asked about the differences, so hold on!
is it a good idea to get this laptop (used like new) in 2020 for 1300 USD? please help!
Hmm sounds ok if you need the features (big battery/SD/thunderbolt), I still use mine to edit my videos when I travel to events.
Jarrod'sTech oh Thank you a lot Jarrod!
Hello, im planning on getting this laptop with the 4k screen for gaming and editing 4k videos. If i turn down my resolution to 1080 for gaming, will i gain the 144hz or will it still be 60hz?
It will still run at 60Hz, regardless of the resolution set.
I don't understand why it's impossible to put the webcam at the top. The bottom bezel is the size of.. a damn big bezel. Maybe for lid thickness? That said I don't care. I am seriously considering getting one of these, just waiting a few months for more manufacturers to come to market with similar designs.
Yeah me too, I don't use the webcam anyway but I'd prefer if it was just not there at all.
which one do you preffer razer blade 2018 or aero 15x
Aero for me because I need the SD slot, otherwise probably the blade, although possibly less performance due to the power limit throttling, I'll compare them in a future video so I'll note my conclusion in there once I've had time to go through all the differences in detail
Will G-Sync work with an external monitor?
I'm not certain about this as I did not test it myself, but I believe it should be possible via the mini displayport as that's connected to the Nvidia graphics, assuming the external monitor supports G-Sync. I'm not certain though, so probably best to do some more research into it to confirm. forum.notebookreview.com/threads/aero-15x-and-external-monitors.815514/
magnificent temperature test mate ! very good, looking forward to see the MSI GE63 Raider RGB Coffee lake review.
thanks in advance.
Thanks for the review!! But i would like to know how battery life performs with the 4k panel... I prefer having more color accuracy than the 144hz
I just bough an Aero 15 8750H cpu . My issue is when unplugged from power adapter, the cpu gets locked at .79ghz. How do you prevent this? Thanks.
It's been a while since I bought a laptop (MSI gs70, bought 2014 - sold it) but I don't remember it crippled to an extent of the aero 15.
anybody have a link for purchase of this laptop? the uhd version. I cant find it for sale
Not sure, the 15x is 3 generations old now so maybe they have limited stock.
I thought it was quite good, plastic edge though but otherwise all metal. I'm hoping to compare with the new ASUS laptop once I have it soon 😃
No problem!
Are you sure about those color results?
The 1080p model is supposed to be 100% sRGB and around 70% AdobeRGB
And the 4K is 100% AdobeRGB not just sRGB
Yeah I tested it twice, it could be possible that my tool is bad although I doubt that. I never actually saw the 1080p model advertised as 100% sRGB, do you have a link for that? On the website, as shown in the screenshot in the video, I only saw that listed for the 4K panel?
Jarrod'sTech ua-cam.com/video/goW2NuzlBME/v-deo.html
Hmm I see, I'm not sure where they got that from as it's not listed as that on Gigabyte's own website.
I was literally about to buy this laptop because of your review Great review,
But for some reason I can’t find any information on the screen ms response time I try googling it and is driving me crazy
Can you help with that ?
No problem! If you get it let me know what you think, it's good to get other peoples opinions in the comments to help others out 😃
Is it true that if I keep my lap plugged in the battery life decrease??? I was always told not to charge my battery once it reach 100%
Rusher02 Gaming that's what I thought about noise. Thought there was a standard for Max Q
Can u link the AUD price?

Hey Jarrod great vid as always but as a question would you recommend this or the Prime S Pa70HS-G laptop from metabox?
Hmm I suppose the Metabox laptop is a bit cheaper, and has full 1070 rather than Max-Q, but it's also 17 inch personally I prefer smaller, the 6 core CPU in the Aero is also going to be better depending on the tasks you do. PA70HS-G is pretty nice and I've got a full video on it too, but for my own personal needs I'd be getting the Aero myself 😃
Yeah thanks for that it helped make up my mind
No problem!
