    Just to clarify, my memory is running at DDR4-2400 17-17-17-39 because this is the highest that both sticks (1x v-color and 1x g.skill) support. I am not sure why DDR4-2666 with the two G.Skill sticks is not working, but others have also confirmed this issue despite the official Gigabyte documentation saying they should be supported. I submitted a support request to Gigabyte to see what they can advise on this, but it seems like the only way for me to get DDR4-2666 would be to get two new sticks of memory and roll the dice again, which I'm probably not going to bother doing as memory isn't cheap. I also forgot to mention that memory should support DDR4-2666 with JEDEC rather than XMP profiles, which are not supported here.
    All temperature testing fan speeds were set to maximum, so that wasn't a variable and was the same throughout all testing.

      @@JarrodsTech I bought 2x 8 gb sticks of GSkill instead of the 16 gig sticks for my 15x. When I first swapped them and turned on the laptop, I waited a significant amount of time staring at a black screen, then I pressed the power button once (just pressed it, not held it), and all of a sudden the boot screen came on, and everything worked fine after. I'm not sure if that will work for you as well, but it's worth a shot. Also is your ram actually running in dual channel? I was under the impression that if you mismatch the ram sticks (different brands, speeds, latencies, etc), they would only run in single channel .

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  5 років тому +2

      Weird, I tried all sorts of things, rebooting lots, taking the battery out, holding F2 on boot to try and get into the BIOS, leaving it running on black screen for a few mins, leaving it off for a few mins with no power, nothing worked for me. Yes, software reports it as running in dual channel (as per pinned comment, both sticks are able to run at DDR4-2400 CL17) and the increase to game performance shown confirms dual channel is working, we wouldn't see such increases just from the size difference of 16GB > 32GB.

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  5 років тому +1

      @Al Ec Thanks! I tried using both sticks in each slot one at a time, neither worked for me. I tried with the battery removed and no disks installed as well. Other people confirmed the same issue, so seems like it's not just me, either way I'll see what their support guys say, hopefully we can get it working.

    Regarding the repaste not lowering temps: As someone already pointed out, I think the Aero 15x Thermal solution is to blame. The heatsink is too small, the fans not powerful and/or large enough to dissipate the heat fast enough, on the contrary the superior Kryonaut thermal paste and thermal pads increase the transfer so efficiently that the small thermal solution can't cope with all the heat coming it's way.
    TBH unless you liquid metal it, I doubt you will see any temperature drops, considering the Aero 15x is notorious for throttling due to it's average cooling. And then, Liquid Metal on highly portable laptops is a risk due to frequent handling.
    Intel's 8th gen Coffee Lake CPUs and Nvidia's 10series Pascal GPUs are above the thermal limit of what thin and light gaming laptops can cope with.
    Hell the MSI GS65 Stealth thermal throttles, the Aero 15x throttles, the Alienware M15 throttles, all the Razer Blades throttle, the Dell XPS 15 throttles, the HP Omen 15 thermal throttles etc...
    The only OEM who's got a thermal solution able to handle those parts are ASUS ROG laptops, but then at a huge compromise when it comes to ergonomics.
    The ROG Zephirus lineup will not thermal throttle (even with stock paste) but to accommodate the large thermal solution you end up with a clumsy forward keyboard and and a touchpad where the numpad goes, plus the innovative hinge/flap cooling/exhaust mechanism means you can't really use it on your lap, it needs a flat surface. The powerful 12V fans are power hogs too so battery life is short. It cools the SoC's alright, but IMHO the Zephyrus notebooks are meant to move from desk to desk and not on your lap (I'd rather get a desktop replacement twice as powerful then, cuz weight is not a factor for me I'm not Linus =P)
    In short, 14 nm and 16 nm SoCs are not power efficient enough for thin and light gaming laptops, only 17.3 inch desktop replacement gaming notebooks have the room for proper cooling solutions able to run full CPU/GPU clocks during long sessions without any repasting. That's why I'm really not interested in Nvidia's Turing RTX2000M/MaxQ series (12nm) nor in Intel's 9th Gen Coffee lake refresh (14nm lol with 2 extra cores so more heat). Both the CPU and GPU power draw will be higher than their respective previous gens, and if OEMs could not cool them properly last time around no chance in hell they will manage this time, one will end up paying a hefty premium for a notebook that will thermal throttles so much one the performance gains from the newer architectures will be nullified. So I fear people are better off buying 2018 Pascal/Coffee lake notebook models.
    Only 7nm SoCs will bring back power efficiency and manageable thermals resulting in a net performance increase, but that's not happening before Q4 2020 because mobile chips launch last =(.

      yep, without some exotic materials being used bigger=better as far as cooling goes. this is a small laptop so big is not an option, and so good cooling is not an option, simple as that. i have a 15w and love it anyway

      The Alienware m15 does not throttle. I’ve been tracking all the gaming notebooks and the m15 is the lightest one to not throttle. That being said, I’m about to get an XPS 15 because most of the other laptops throttle. The m15 is nice but a little expensive for me atm. I’ll just undervolt the XPS 15 and call it a day. Serious gaming is for my laptop or using an egpu at home.

    Okay so I finally got around to doing the mods myself. Haven't noticed an increase in network capability (though likely due to limited output from my modem) however the extra stick of RAM is awesome (if for no other reason than saying your laptop has 32gb of it...). I ended up doing a bit more research and found that once upon a time Gigabyte had a promotion that gave out a free stick of 16gb 2666 RAM if a 15X laptop was bought during March 2019. The stick in question was the Samsung M471A2K43CB1-CTD that you have listed in your video on the supported upgrades list and plugged straight into the vacant slot and worked out of the box! Highly recommend giving the Samsung a go if you're having any issues getting 2666 speeds (as a few people out there have reported). Once again, great video man thanks for the upgrade walkthrough!

    It sounds bananas but by far the best upgrade to my gigabyte p57w was.. raising the back of the laptop a little off the table so air could reach the vents on the underside. I used a bit of wood shaped like a very thick ruler, double-sided-taped to my laptop stand. It was night and day, went from overheating crashes during games to no worries. Second best thing was using the gigabyte control panel to up the fan speed.

      Also if anyone does this, 5 things wish I knew: 1. will need #0 Philips head and T6 screw drivers. 2. Plastic spoon is a good pry tool. 3. For battery removal the white connection point is very hard to get out. Pull and wiggle on the ends to get it out, don't pull wires. 4. Swap original ssd to other slot and add 1 new 16 gb killer to first slot worked first time no problems. 5. After adding SSD have to enable in software so it shows. Good luck!

    I found same issue with you about RAM Upgrade.
    First, my laptop had come with G.SKILL 16GB DDR4 2666Hz (F4-2666C18S-16GRS)
    Since I bought AERO 15X v8 at April 18, there is no vendor who sells DDR4 260-pin 2666. so I bought SAMSUNG 16GB DDR4 2666Hz (Part No. is too difficult to write).
    And it was very EXPENSIVE then (about 200$)
    Fortunately, it works very comfortable, and I finished undervolting and repasting thermal compound, my Aero's Temp was impressive chill.
    Two days ago, I bought G.SKILL 16GB DDR4 2666Hz (F4-2666C18S-16GRS) manufactured January 2019 (first one January 2018)
    When I let it works as dual, I encounter black screen, there is no sign about BIOS just heating SSD.
    After doing several case, and benchmarks, I found best case is using G.SKill & SAMSUNG.
    or I have to use just one stick of RAM but it is too being idiot, not using dual channel.
    I think it is very big issue with RAM Compativilty since there is no alert about it.
    Why Gigabyte doesn't say anything about it?

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  5 років тому

    Thanks Jarrod for listening to our requests and making this video. It's a shame about what happened with the RAM nut at least you got it working somewhat.Running dual-Channel is definitely worth it though. I never realized how cheap the WiFi card replacement was! I'm gonna have to try that out next. I wish i could go to CES, especially this year. Looking forward to seeing your videos from there!

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  5 років тому +2

      No problem! Yeah me either, I only looked into the WiFi card upgrade after I made that community post showing the first parts for the upgrade that arrived, so that was one of the reasons the upgrade video was delayed because I ordered that separately haha, $15 for the card, $10 shipping, ouch! I'll update the pinned comment if I get any progress on the dual channel memory, or maybe a Twitter/Facebook message, Gigabyte just responded to my support ticket asking for more info.

    • @e2rqey
      @e2rqey 5 років тому

      @@JarrodsTech Good luck! hopefully it can be fixed by re-flashing the BIOS or something. I hate the feeling like I'm leaving performance on the table. I'm also interested to see how that liquid metal turns out if you decide to do it. I don't think I have the guts to try it. One of the only good things about living somewhere really cold is that I get significantly better thermals! After messing around a lot in XTU, I have the 8750H CPU running at the 3.9Ghz Boost clock constantly with the max clock speed going up to 4.04Ghz occasionally. And an idle temperature of around 38 degrees Celsius. With those temps I don't want to mess with re-pasting at all. Who know's? Maybe Gigabyte is actaully using some half decent thermal paste now? Oh btw, did your laptop come with that extra Thermal Pad for you to use if you add a second SSD to the laptop? I got one with my laptop in that little bag that has the manual and that Driver Disc (lol why do they give you a driver disk for a laptop with no disc drive??). Man those AU prices are rough. It must make shopping on the internet so much less enjoyable. That same WiFi card costs me $17 with free shipping.

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  5 років тому +1

      Yeah no point changing it if it's working fine! Nah it didn't, it had one thermal pad on the original SSD but no extra for me to use. Shipping here makes me sad 😛

    Memory: I got the V-color stick as well and due to thaiphon, it should be using Samsung C-die and I just bought another Samsung C-die SO-DIMM stick and it works fine at 2666MHz speed.
    SSD: Added a Samsung 970 PRO 512G.
    Thermal: I replaced the thermal paste with Thermalgrizzly Conductonaut liquid metal on CPU and GPU and configured an undervolting. I was achieving 80-85 degree Celsius on the CPU stress test in intel XTU and lower noise level while daily use.

    This is a great video that literally sold me on this laptop. A couple of things to add:
    1. I purchased my laptop at the flagship store in Taipei, Taiwan. The Gigabyte presence here isn't huge - it's mostly Asus, Acer, and MSI territory. Since the reviews are usually very complimentary, I wonder if they are focused on the export market (USA)? Issues about warranty service and availability will be a future opportunity for some.
    2. Since the shop I bought it from didn't have spare parts, I purchased an additional 16gb RAM stick and an M.2 Samsung drive from an MSI store that also sold a couple of Gigabyte models. The tech there recommended the Crucial CT16G4SFD8266. It worked at the advertised speed.
    3. The RAM turned out to be compatible and ran at the spec'd speeds (no downgrade) as tested by CPU-Z, but ... when I installed it and booted the computer, it remained on a black screen for a few minutes. At first, I tried to turn it off by holding down the power button. All the indicator lights went out and I started to flip the computer over - then the lights turned back on! After trying to shut it down a few more times, I went to my phone and Googled "laptop wont turn off". About the point I was ready to give up and ... well, don't ask. As soon as I removed the back cover, the GIGABYTE logo somehow miraculously came up on the screen and it has booted successfully ever since. TL;DR = If it boots to a black screen after installing this specific model of RAM, give it a minute (more like 5) to sort itself out.
    4. The initial speed of the computer is very good, but it started a bit rough. I suspect this was because there were a ton of Windows updates being pushed in the background and because the new Samsung drive was used briefly before installing the specific Samsung driver. Also, and this is controversial, I installed all of my programs with a link on the taskbar. Did a benchmark using Samsung Magician before and after got a huge improvement after removing most of them. Later that day I did that on my old computer and also saw an improvement using the Samsung Magician performance benchmark test. Since these computers are sold for their speed and power, it might be worthwhile to test this out. Many say this is nonsense.

    I swapped my thermal paste from stock to Kryonaut after using the Aero15X for around 2 years. Before I changed my idle temps were at high 80s to low 90s, post-Kryonaut temps were much better at high 50s to low 60s on idle & clocking 3.9Ghz on ALL cores during my 30 minute XTU stress test with package temps not exceeding 92 degrees celsius. My suspicions were proven right, bad temps were caused by a mix of clogged up dust fans/fins & stock thermal paste that’ve dried up. I only used 99.9% iso-alcohol and a few cotton buds, it wiped them clean just fine. I also didn’t use thermal pads like shown in the video and used the Kryonaut instead. One small syringe of the Kryonaut should suffice. Reply to this comment with any questions, would be happy to help! Btw great video! This served well as my go to guide for my Aero15X.

The memory is running at 1333MHz (DDR4-2666) 15-17-17-35 timing and Dual Channel according to HWiNFO. Very surprised the G.Skill kit did not work for you as I figured it would be equivalent to the Kingston. Hi Jarrod, like many here I also bought the Aero 15X back in October after watching several youtube videos, including yours. I've also done the RAM upgrade, but only purchased the one stick to start with. I upgraded my WiFi card to the Killer 1550 which is basically the same intel chip as the one you used. For storage, I went with a 1TB HP EX920 and a 2TB Intel 660p. The intel worked great but the HP took me quite some time to finally learn that it was picky with how exactly it was installed. It's been flawless ever since. I also did the repaste with Kryonaut and used .5mm Fujipoly pads on the VRAM chips. I would encourage you to try under-volting your CPU a bit more. I was able to run mine at -.200 with almost no instability issues, but bumped it up to -.180 and it's been rock solid. I found a script to run XTU at startup and automatically apply the undervolt, and it's working great. Not seeing incredible temp improvements, but I'm seeing 4.01GHz across all cores in most apps, and rarely seeing it throttle, although it still runs at 87+ under heavy loads. Hope this can help you! -Jason

      Hey, good to hear the upgrades went well! Yeah I could probably undervolt it more, I went with -0.15v in my original thermal testing video to see any improvement, I just figured I'd try a bit less here to try and account for others that may not be able to get quite as much. I might try redo the paste with the drop method instead, may I ask how you applied your paste?

    I have the same unit as yours as mine too came with the vcolor memory. I ended up going with a 32gb (2666) Ballistic Kit from Crucial and it too comes out as 2400 speeds... apparently you need to look at the jedec speeds rather than XMP 2.0 which the Aero15x doesnt support and from what i hear wont. I contacted Gigabyte support and after some investigating it seems that this kit from Crucial (CT2K16G4SFD8266) will work at 2666. Kinda bummed but same time the benefits from going to dual channel out weigh the cons of a tad slower memory. Seen a solid increase with BFv! I too went with the 1tb 970evo and im very pleased with having such speedy storage. I didint think about the wifi card upgrade, but now you got me thinking about doing it as i believe my router config will support the new cards features. Thanks for the video!!!

      You shouldn't be spreading the paste manually as it will create air gaps which worsen temperatures. Hence it canceled out the benefits of using a superior thermal paste.
      Just apply a 1-2mm sized amount of paste and reinstall the heatsink. The mounting pressure of the heatsink will spread the paste out.

    I bought the Aero 15x on black friday, and got a single 16gb G.Skill module to accompany the 16gb Kingston module that was running at 2666 speed in single channel, an HP EX920 1TB NVMe SSD changed to Samsung 860 EVO), and Ge Gelid Extreme to repaste the CPU and GPU
    My results for the repaste mirrored yours for changes to CPU and GPU temps, with only about a 1-3C improvement. It is good to know that Gigabyte is at least using a good paste for their high end laptops
    Apparently the memory must have 2666 speeds in the JEDEC profile of the memory module, not an XMP profile like the G.Skill module. I personally don't mind as the speed is only really noticeable to me in gaming performance. The 32gb's is mainly to be able to run a lot of VMs for testing, so speed isn't generally an issue here.
    I initially tried using an HP EX920 1TB NVMe SSD in the 2nd slot, but I'm guessing the module was defective. Many other NVMe drives using the SM2262 controller report to work fine in the laptop and I probably just had a defective unit. However, I decided to return it and get an 860 EVO 1TB drive instead, as it mainly functions as a steam library and storage for my VM ISOs and other test software. The 512gb Toshiba NVMe drive is fast enough to run the actual VMs on, a 2nd drive being NVMe would just be a nice to have.
    Something else I noticed is that using the FB05 BIOS, ThrottleStop was working just fine, but during the troubleshooting of the HP EX920 drive, I updated the BIOS to FB08. Since then, ThrottleStop doesn't appear to be able to launch anymore, though the Intel XTU does still work. This is disappointing, as with ThrottleStop it is very easy to set Overclocking profiles for both AC and Battery, and it will automatically switch to the appropriate profile with ThrottleStop. Unfortunately Intel XTU doesn't appear to be capable of this auto-switching (or at least they didn't make it easy to implement).

    Hello Jarrod! Recently I've sent my Aero 15w V8 to Gigabyte's service center in Malaysia since I could not find another V-color ram in my country to pair up with the existing one. The service center already confirmed me that they have V-color ram in their stock. I can give you a feedback on V-color performance once I receive my laptop from Gigabyte.
    Apart from this I've few questions,
    1) I've ordered 9260 card through amazon & will arrive next week. So before installing do I have to uninstall the current drivers at first? Is it necessary to remove the battery for installing the card (removing battery seems kind tricky in aero 15)? From where did you download the driver for 9260?
    2) For booting windows directly from 970Pro SSD do I have to put the SSD on primary slot or I can put it in the empty slot? I want to make the 970pro primary SSD.
    3) Does the overall experience of using the laptop feels more snappier after dual channel upgradation?
    Sorry for asking too many questions.🙂

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  5 років тому +2

      Interesting, I did ask Gigabyte support if they could sell me a stick of V-Color memory but was told that they can't, at least to me here in Australia.
      I didn't change the drivers for WiFi before removing it, the new one worked perfectly fine with the existing drivers too, but I did download the correct drivers for the 9260 after it was installed and installed those anyway. I just did a google search for "intel 9260 drivers" which took me here: downloadcenter.intel.com/product/99445/Intel-Wireless-AC-9260 removing the battery probably isn't required for that, but it was pretty easy.
      I think you can have the SSD in either slot, it shouldn't matter, the boot loader would just modify the boot order when you install Windows. It does feel a bit better with dual channel, occasionally I noticed sometimes apps would freeze for a brief moment and now that's gone.

    On a p650hp6-g, I had to UV the CPU and then apply LM to the CPU before getting the temps to budge. This was on a chassis that didn’t have a maximum fan speed function.

    Here I am in Australia too thinking about buying an AERO 15 around boxing day as a gaming laptop. I have a simple question if you don't mind, as I am intending to put a second SSD in to boost the storage. It will be my first time ever to dig inside the internals of a laptop and I was unsure about whether the battery have to be removed or just simply disconnected for just putting in another SSD. • @JarrodsTech

      If it gets too high, the components will throttle back to prevent themselves going hotter which will reduce performance. Technically higher temperatures will reduce life of the parts, but how much this practically matters I do not know, I've never seen any good information about this.

      The one I list in the description? A few people say it is, unfortunately I can't justify spending $500 AUD to buy it and find out though.

    I wonder the wifi performance as I'm having trouble with my 2017 AERO 15. The wifi is unstable and will disconnect if I play games. I checked on other devices and the wifi is fine except on my laptop. Also the wifi will disappear after few times of disconnection, I've tried every solution including clean reset but it still happening. My last solution now is to change the wifi card but I wonder if it actually worth it to swap the card and the problem may occur again. Also the wifi card is not the same model.

      If you're using the latest drivers and have tested using the laptop close to the access point to rule out stuff being in the way, probably time for a new card, they usually aren't very expensive
