    The reason why it was important to find the cat was to prevent its movements showing up on the motion sensor they were using to find the xenomorph.

    I think that director's cut is even better than theatrical! Contains some very cool scenes, especially "egg morphing scene"!!!

    Great review. I was 9 or 10 back in 1979 when _Alien_ came out (yeah, I’m that old) and my father took me to see it… I can tell you that I couldn’t sleep for days afterwards (thanks for that, Dad, lol). The chestburster scene fried everybody’s brain. Nobody had seen _anything_ like that movie before… there was something so visceral, so disturbing, so _real_ about the way the film was shot, the acting, and the eggs/chestburster/adult alien, not to mention how freakin’ WEIRD the derelict spaceship was, how creepy the space jockey was, the way the inside of the ship looked like bones… the whole thing was just so sinister that those of us who got to see it were freaked out for a long time afterwards. Again - the strength of the original Alien was that nobody had ever seen _anything_ like that before, all oozing and dripping and organic and vicious and gutsy (in more ways than one).
    Truth be told, nobody really thought of Alien as anything but a horror movie/monster movie when it was released… for us kids, "sci-fi" at that point was _Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, The Black Hole, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Star Trek,_ and the old classics from the 50s and 60s. Alien was the first big-budget movie to ever really portray space as a genuinely terrifying place, at least for my generation. That’s what was so funny about Kenner trying to market Alien toys to kids - I did have the 18 inch Alien figure (and I wish to god I still had it) and one or two other things but it really was not a movie for kids, any more than Dawn of the Dead or Jaws were movies for kids 😊
    Also, as an aside - that scene of the Alien hanging in the chains? That shot wasn’t in the movie in 1979. They added that later for the re-release in 2003, along with the scene where they listen to the actual alien transmission, the quick shot of Kane holding the pistol in his hand right before the egg opens, and of course the cocoon scene…none of those were in the movie.
    There was also a brief bit of dialogue that was actually removed for the director’s cut re-release. It’s when Ripley confronts Dallas in the hallway right after Ash says that they have to take the facehugger back, “all sorts of tests need to be done,” etc:
    In this scene, back in the original release in 1979, after Dallas tells Ripley “standard procedure is to do what the hell they tell you to do,” Ripley asks him “You ever ship out with Ash before?” Dallas replies “I went out five times with another science officer. They replaced him, two days before we left Thedus, with Ash.” Ripley says “I don’t trust him.” And Dallas replies “I don’t trust _anybody._ ”
    Seems Ridley Scott removed some tiny bits here and there for the re-release director’s cut, including the above snippet of dialogue, presumably because he thought they hinted too strongly that there was something suspicious about Ash.

      John D. O'Brien I bet this was an amazing experience seeing on the big screen! I can only imagine. I did enjoy this movie. Well written, very intense. I didn't realize in 2003 they added some scenes like the chains scenes back in. so interesting.
      Thanks for watching and commenting! Love hearing from fans of franchises like this that have been around for awhile. Out of curiosity, as someone who saw this on the big screen, what did you think of Prometheus?

    • @johnd.obrien6838
      @johnd.obrien6838 7 років тому +1

      Well... hmmm. Prometheus... I will say that initially, the _trailers_ made me feel like it was going to be a return to the innovation/originality that made the original _Alien_ so good (right down to using that freaky high-pitched noise that they used in the 1979 trailer - which I still think is one of the best trailers ever made, even the _trailer_ scared me when I was a kid, lol) and seeing the derelict ship (well, the one that became known as the "juggernaut") in the trailers along with the brief glimpses of the space jockey _really_ got me psyched. Some of it might have been nostalgia, but it was so cool to see that they were going to be featured in the film as more than just ancient, decaying remnants from the past... And I mean, it was Ridley freakin' Scott! What could go wrong?
      But then when I saw the movie (I sprang for 3d imax tix when it came out, and it certainly _looked_ amazing), I was let down. It's not that I think Scott necessarily started with a _bad_ idea ("who or what was the space jockey?") it's that I don't think he took enough risks with it. He could have done _so much more_ with it; the space jockey from the original _Alien_ was just as freaky and otherworldly as the rest of the creatures in the movie and he really could have gone whole-hog with its story and origins and whatnot, if he had gotten the right creative team to work with him (he didn't have a Dan O'Bannon or Ron Shusett to inject their love of hard sci-fi into the story, and I don't even think H.R. Giger had much involvement either by that point). He could have chosen to do something really creative, original and maybe even groundbreaking with the story of the space jockey and its connection to the 'xenomorph,' but instead he went off in the direction of "Ancient Aliens" and Erik Von Daniken (groan).
      And to find out that the space jockey was just a tall humanoid in a suit was _seriously_ anticlimactic. It wasn't nearly "alien" enough, so to speak. I mean, in the 1979 film, Dallas even says "It looks like it's grown right out of the chair..." _That_ could have been a jumping off point for something really incredible; and they could have easily gone back to Giger's work for more inspiration if they wanted to, to really flesh out a surrealistic, completely non-human biomechanical race of beings.
      But I don't think Ridley had any interest in that stuff by the time _Prometheus_ rolled around. He wanted to pursue a pseudo-philisophical story about creators and creations (which I thought he handled much better in _Blade Runner_ , actually) and he really just used the _Alien_ trappings as window dressing (although I blame the writers for that as well). And of course, the characters weren't nearly as likeable as the ones in the first movie, mainly because they weren't written as well - and they did do some incredibly stupid things. It's very telling that the most interesting character in _Prometheus_ turned out to be the android, David.
      But I'd say the biggest disappointment about Prometheus - for me - was that at no point did I ever forget that I was watching a _movie._ That's what made the original so effective, in the end: Watching _Alien_ felt like you were watching _real_ people stuck in a very real, and very dangerous situation. I wish somebody - Ridley, or anybody really - could recreate that feeling again.

      John D. O'Brien This is the best I've read about why someone didn't like Prometheus as much. I asked because I was curious. Prometheus was the first film in this franchise I saw. So with no background or expectations I thought chunks were really cool, but the Alien stuff felt shoved in and confusing. Then I saw the whole franchise last month and re-watched Prometheus and thought it was really cool, but the Alien stuff felt shoved in and confusing. Which is a shame because we are there to see the Alien stuff. Very good thoughts and perspective! Thanks for commenting, and I'm really enjoying this conversation and your thoughts. Did you get a chance to see Alien Covenant?

    Classic and one of the better horror AND science fiction films in either genre. Masterpiece and Master Class from someone who would go on to be one of the best directors in film. An whom only Kubrick can shoot a scene as well.... just a wow movie. A must see if you enjoy either horror or science fiction.

    So the reason why Brett went after the cat the first time was so they wouldn’t pick it up on the motion tracker again, I get the second time criticism to get the cat. Just thought I’d let you know so, the reason was founded

    Ripley going back for the cat...well it was the only thing to go back for as everyone else is dead... and not unlike her going back for Newt in Aliens. She is also the only one seen holding and petting it while the rest of the crew ignored it.

    You know this movie I think when I was younger I still hold aliens as my favorite . but I didn't appreciate this movie because of its slow pace because when you're a kid you won't action you don't want slow you want more aliens and stuff like that. But once I got older and really rewatched it phenomenal movie I mean one of the best sci-fi horror movies ever. With the exception of John Carpenter's The Thing which I have always watched on VHS as well and haven't watched it on DVD looking forward to getting it and seeing the documentary behind the scenes I heard it's really good.

    Y'all should watch Spaceballs (1987). They do an excellent parody of the chest burster scene from this film. It's one of the many funny moments from that Mel Brooks film.

    This film does have negatives but I noticed you didn't discuss them...the slow burn, dragging camera, minimal soundtrack is not the greatest thing ever....the film can be quite dull for long stretches.

    • @ChrisDurban
      @ChrisDurban  7 років тому

      MYT MIC There are some negatives I surely could've spent more time on. But I had never seen this movie, and my expectations were kind of medium. So even though there are those moments the positives stuck much stronger in my head.
      Thank you for watching and commenting!

    • @adamcade604
      @adamcade604 2 роки тому

      These negatives are all stupid! First of all if you don't like slower paced movies that's another story, but the movie needs the slow paced first half in order to to set up the mystery around the creation of the xenomorph and also make you care about the characters. Secondly wtf is the problem with the dragged camera, would you prefer it have multiple cuts, not being able to understand what is going on? And finally having the score minimalistic works since according to Ridley Scott, it would have taken away the effectiveness of many sequences,! So delete that comment NOW!

    The criticism with lambert is not really founded; her character is supposed to embody the audience, especially the women viewers. Most people that are not horror buffs like you guys would have connected with her and found her reactions reasonable. And In my opinion Alien is better than Aliens, but by a small margin

    I don’t know what the beef is with Jonesy. It’s a perfect device for a few reasons. First, it was a deflection to make the audience think it may be infected by the alien, which creates more dread and suspicion. Second, and maybe more importantly, is that it represents humanity’s superiority to the emotionless killing machine, the alien. I would save my cat in a heartbeat, and have done as much escaping an apartment fire in real life. Long live Jonesy.

    "Alien" is a CLASSIC Sci-Fi movie!
    One point, Lambert, was the first to suggest "taking their chances in the escape pod," watching the documentary, and learning, I did not realize they tried to make her character "androgynous," to where you could not tell if she was woman or man...but that was intended. Veronica Cartwright, who played Lambert, was the one who had been acting the longest, out of the whole cast. She was on an episode of The Twilight Zone (The original b&w show-1959-1964), among other things, and played the main child actor, Cathy, in Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds."

    In the leadup to Alien Romulus, I thought I'd give my thoughts on the Alien Franchise as a whole.
    2020 was a bust but one good thing that came out of it was that since there were no new movies that were coming out, I got to see the Alien Franchise for the first time.
    And I can safely say that Alien remains one of my top 10 favorite horror as well as Sci Fi movies of all time.
