I still can’t believe the original Alien is a 70’s film. Way ahead of its time.

I was watching it on Blu-Ray recently. It looks like it could have been made recently. Both alien and blade runner have aged so well.
I still maintain that Aliens is the movie that made Ripley into one of, if not the, greatest female character in Cinematic history. If Alien was the only film with Ripley I don't think the character would've been remembered as fondly as she is today.
Absolutely. If you don't know anything about the franchise at all going in, it's not even apparent until the second half/last act of Alien who the main character is. That's by design, and it works well for that movie. But Aliens is where Ripley gets to really shine, from start to finish. Sigourney even got an Oscar nomination for a sci-fi action film for gods sake, that never happens. Aliens took her to the next level for sure.

yes I agree. Although Alien 3 is everything else then an easy watch, the CGI is horrible and killing off Newt and Hicks is a punch in the face...But the director, actors and atmosphere is another level compared to AVP 2. The only thing I prefer in this, are the kills and perhaps the pacing. But the characters, visuals, dialoge, the fucking darkness, the dumb storyy (especially the end), etc. etc. Thats absolute garbage (and AVP 1 is a masterpiece in comparison)

When Alien was released to theaters everyone there started freaking out at the chest burster scene and it only got worse after that. Great night at the movies that I will never forget.
Very solid ranking. I agree AVP is a fun movie and it delivers what its supposed to. I think the same with Resurrection. Not great movies but fun with great action and effects. The first 2 are the masterpieces.

For me (I haven’t watched either of the AVPs nor Prometheus):
5-Covenant (hated this movie, borderline unwatchable, twist at the end was obvious, and was confusing)
4- Ressurection (Was really strange, and no likable characters)
3- Alien3 (liked this movie a lot excluding the first five minutes, The ending was amazing)
2- Alien (What can I say, it’s a classic)
1-Aliens (my favorite movie of all time, just like the first but more action, more characters, and two climaxes)
Finally, I feel like I found someone who thinks like me about the Alien movies.
And yes, I was one of those people who knew nothing about Alien when we first watched it on TV. Didn't know what's a face hugger, didn't know what it did. Didn't know the chest burster actually grows. Imagine our horror.
And I was also lucky enough not to know Darth Vader was Luke's father, and also not knowing that Yoda was Yoda, when he first met Luke and said that he knows master Yoda, being all goofy and then turning out to be a Jedi master. Those were the days.
Ignorance it's sometimes a blessing in disguise...

I liked the idea of being around all those prisoners, it created a pretty cool atmosphere. The Assembly cut IMO is a better film and feels more complete.
Robby Most people like the assembly a little better. The concept of the prison is cool but wasn't executed great imo and I was already really unforgiving after the first 5 minutes.

My top two could easily switch depending on my mood and I agree with you that they’re much better than all the others. However, I’m actually a pretty big Alien 3 fan. I even like the theatrical cut more than the assembly cut. I understand most people hate it because of what they did with the characters but I felt it was very effective on an emotional level and thought it was a very interesting movie visually. I like to pretend that Aliens is the end of the story but I like Alien 3 a lot as a “what if” movie.
As for Prometheus, I liked it a lot but thought Alien: Covenant kind of ruined it. Prometheus set up some interesting things storywise and Covenant basically ignored them and went in a weird and uninteresting direction.
I also don’t understand the hate for Alien: Resurrection. I thought it was pretty entertaining and a better popcorn flick than Alien vs. Predator. Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem, on the other hand, was horrible. Probably one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen. Boring story, lots of uninteresting action sequences, not a single likable character, and 80% of the movie was too dark to tell what was going on. Not that the movie would be any better if you could tell what was going on. Anyway, the ones I watch the most are the first three.

I thought that throwing away characters for some edgy sake was a poor move. Alien Resurrection was one of the worst piles of shit I have ever seen, with its really bad humour and acting from most of the cast. It also had possibly the worst human villain I have ever seen in this series. However, I would still watch it like more times than Aliens Vs Predator: Requiem, which is one of the worst movies ever made.
I hadn’t commented my ranking yet. But here it is.
1. Aliens (1986)-James Cameron did a great job making a sequel that’s different enough. It’s tense and had great action!! Great cast!!
2. Alien (1979)-so terrifying and a masterpiece to me. This film still scares me.
3. Prometheus (2012)-I liked how different this one is and the cast is awesome. Plus, I like how it makes you think. I feel like a straight up sequel to this would have been more interesting along with adding Xenomorphes. .
4. Alien Covenant 2017)-definitely messes with the lore....but i can get on board with its changes and it’s nearly back to form.
5. Alien 3 (1992)-yes, it’s a huge slap in the face after Aliens....but I like the horror element is back.
6. Alien Vs. Predator* (2004)-stupid entertainment. So memorable and a great theater experience I had as a teen.
7. Alien Resurrection (1997)-I think upon a rewatch this would change, but just the ending and weird things they do is just awful. Yuck.
8. Alien Vs. Predator: Requiem* (2007)-just terrible and too dark.

I totally agree with your list. I love the first 2 movies and the last act of Avp, but would likely never watch any of the other movies again.
Alien3 is number 8! It was the most well acted Alien film. Of course it has it's problems but the Assembly cut improves it a little.

Alien 3 was bland. And story does a terrible job at actually making you feel bad for characters compared to the first to movies which has more dynamic cast members. I felt no emotion for any of the characters because they were just a bunch of convicts with no redeeming qualities

Which Alien 3 version did you watch?
I used to watch the theatrical version growing up and thought it was very mediocre. But I then I saw the extended cut and thought it elevated the movie to 3rd best in my personal ranking
I put ALIEN at No1 and Aliens at No2, but I've never seen the second film in theaters. I would Bump up "Alien Resurrection" one notch over "AVP"! Solid List!!! I still haven't gotten over the 1st ten minutes I spent in the theatre watching ALIEN3!

Cody, I totally agree with your order. I do like AVP, I still am curious how this movies timeline could fit in Alien Covenant timelines. How did Xenomorphs end up in Ancient earth when they began in Alien Covenant timeline.

Cody, saw this in a packed theater back in May of 1979 and everyone there jumped at each kill from the breakout to the end. It was and still is my 2nd favorite in the series, Aliens being the 1st.
Respect for having Resurrection in your top 4, it's climbed to my 3rd favourite after the first 2 (replacing Alien 3: Assembly Cut), I find that it gets better with each rewatch.
Wow that is almost exactly the same as my list and for almost the exact same reasons! The only thing that we differ on is #1 and #2, but they're both so good its really splitting hairs

Cody Leach what would you like to see in the up and coming third picture in this Ridley Scott prequels to Alien? What is missing that you would like to see or know?
Anthony Kulik I'd like to see a movie that feels like an Alien movie. I feel like he's taken the Prometheus storyline as far as it needs to go. Just have a straight forward sci-fi/horror movie with Xenomorphs that doesn't betray or convolute anything.

Alien and Aliens are the only 2 that matter.. alien is my favourite for its horror then aliens for its action.
Alien is better than aliens, alien has better set design, better characters, better Xenomorph design, and a better time and atmosphere. Don't get me wrong aliens is a great film and I would love for them to make a first person horror action game set on Hadley's hope after the events of the second film. But with that said alien is just an overall better film.

What is sad is that Alien Covenant could have been #1 if Scott had not fucked it up so bad. We wanted more of the backstory of the engineers and who really created them. It was idiotic that David created the eggs and xeno because in the earlier movies and Prometheus there are murals of the xeno and egg so how the heck did a robot create this ahead of the engineers? Major plot hole screwed the series.

I think they should have stopped at Aliens and left it at that.
Alien vs. Aliens is a tough one... but aside from Alien getting a bump being the original I think I give the title to Aliens too. This video got you the subscribe BTW...

I don't think Aliens (1986) aged all that well at all compared to the original Alien (1979). Everything about that movie just screams 80's whereas the original Alien is transcendent in every way possible and the iconic special effects holds up very well today.

10. Alien resurrection - at least it had xenomorphs
9. Alien Covenant - some decent action. Was Ridley Scott stoned.

7. Predators 2010 reboot - some cool predator designs, but a huge missed opportunity.
6. AVPR: Aliens vs. Predator Requiem - visually terrible. Story lazy, but had a few interesting ideas. Some good gore.
5. Predator 2 - tone and visuals were rather drab and dull. Awesome predator action though.
4. AVP: Alien vs. Predator - definitely underrated. Revisiting it I found it to be quite an epic and at times suspenseful action romp. Flawed? Yes. B-movie guilty pleasure for me.
3. Alien - classic haunted house in outer space. But, too little action for my tastes when it comes to what I expect from this franchise. Still, a great piece of suspense; what more can be said?
2. Predator 1987 - badass introduction to a legendary icon. If only the other predator entries could have had the same brawn. Awesome Climax.
1. James Cameron’s Aliens - even though I am a bigger fan of the predator as a creature I can’t help but say that the sequel to Alien is the absolute perfect blend of intense action movie, horror movie, and suspense tableau in all of sci-if cinema. It mixes the best of both series without having to include the predator. All the fear of alien, the brawn of predator, and the action of terminator makes it a roller coaster ride that can’t be missed. Also the best use of xenomorphs and gore effects in the whole franchise.

1. Aliens in a landslide. Not close. The only one you can watch over and over and not get bored.
The only issue I have with aliens is the scene where Ripley is holding onto the ladder and keeps her grip against the vacuum of space. And I didnt even care cause it's a old movie. That movies a perfect classic.

Oh man I loved Prometheus and Covenant. I think it's kind of like Halloween 3 where I don't really think of them as Alien movies.

Yeah, Prometheus had to have an Alien in it, Scott didn't want it, but then again, FOX fucks a lot of directors and their ideas over. I gave it props for wanting to try something different.

I actually really like the assembly cut of Alien 3. I like depressing films sometimes and I don't consider it completely nihilistic due to the ending.
