"The Iron Claw" was so amazing. It was a tragedy yet uplifting at the same time. I loved it!!!
I literally watched The Holdovers last night and I COMPLETELY AGREE WITH your review of it. The script is crazy good and we found our Best Supporting Actress. Paul Giamatti it might be his best performance ever, and the kid 😮 first movie and he came out SWINGING. But yea, it’s Nolan’s year. He deserves it
I saw Barbie last night. lol. It was a good movie not my favorite though. Now I should watch The Holdovers.
I saw that movie because of Austin and it was everything he said and more. Such an amazing film

My Top 10 Favorite Movies of 2023
10. Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie 9/10
A quality documentary about Michael J. Fox as he details the highs and lows of his career and struggles with his condition. It made me and my dad tear up and appreciate what this man’s done that much more.
9. John Wick Chapter 4 9/10
The action is the most thrilling and spectacular yet, the stakes feel at their highest, the dynamics are interesting, and the cinematography is gorgeous. What more am I to ask from this excellent franchise?
8. Past Lives 9/10
A tale of two people and their relationship over time, highlighting the harsher sides of love. For me, it felt like a more mature version of Your Name, one of my favorite movies ever, and I loved it! The performances were great too!
7. The Iron Claw 9/10
Thankfully, I got to check this one out! It was incredibly emotional, the story’s captivating, our actors give great performances allowing for a truly phenomenal and impactful biopic.
6. Godzilla Minus One 9/10
Investing human characters, interesting themes, and horrific imagery acting as an extended metaphor for the horrors of conflict, this felt like a love letter to the classic ‘54 film.
5. Oppenheimer 9/10
Christopher Nolan, a favorite director of mine, explores a man’s best intentions for the world being corrupted, and it tormenting him. The performances, score, themes, cinematography, and visual effects all make this film a true cinematic spectacle imo.
4. The Boy and The Heron 9/10
Hayao Miyazaki, my favorite director of all time, delivers his most personal film. The animation, Mahito’s journey of growth, symbolism, themes, incredible score, and messages all make this some of the best Miyazaki and Ghibli have ever offered imo.
3. The First Slam Dunk 9/10
Slam Dunk is one of my favorite mangas ever, and the arc this film adapts is my favorite. Takehiko Inoue made me care a lot more for one of his most underdeveloped characters and still got the best parts of the arc right. The story, characters, and soundtrack are to praise here, especially the 3D animation, as it made the game look and flow more naturally.
2. Suzume 9.5/10
Makoto Shinkai, another favorite director of mine, tells the story of a girl suffering the loss of her mom after an earthquake, and never having moved on. Her journey in recognizing the suffering of more people and areas of Japan, and her learning to appreciate what she has now would land this film next to Your Name and Weathering With You for me, two more of my favorite films ever.
1. Across The Spider-Verse 10/10
This film is something truly remarkable imo. The animation is some of the best ever, the writing is incredibly smart, our characters are especially investing, Spot is a very well developed villain, Mile’s and Miguel’s struggle is entertaining, etc. As an animation and Spider-Man fan, this is a celebration of both, and it’s my new favorite animated movie ever.
Honorable mentions: The Holdovers, Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 3, Black Clover: Sword of The Wizard King, Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part 1, Killers of The Flower Moon, Blue Giant, Nimona

@@Shahriyararin63 thank you my boy 👍 always loved his presence onscreen especially in the Back To The Future films. It’s just a trilogy, but honestly that trilogy alone would let him be one of my favorite actors ever 🔥

First half of 2024 looks pretty good, but that Writers and SAG-AFTRA strikes are gonna be felt in late 2024 and 2025
Fun fact about Blackberry! AMC+ turned it into a 3 part series…kinda the same treatment that Tarantino’s Hateful 8 got on Netflix. Few more scenes, paced well, really enjoyed it!

Happy new year Austin! I hope that you and your family have a great safe 2024
I love that you appreciate each movie on its own terms. Reminds me of Roger Ebert, who I think is easily one of the best film critics of all time.
Ebert is the 🐐
Mark kermode is the 🐐
Ebert said something like watch the movie for what it is, not what you want it to be
There’s a reason you’re my favorite reviewer. Feels like not enough people are talking about the Holdovers, it’s excellent. We share many of the same of our top 10

1. Oppenheimer
2. The Iron Claw
3. Air
4. Guardians Vol 3
5. John Wick Chapter 4
6. (Very Close to being top 5 and I adore it) The Holdovers
Iron Claw was my biggest surprise of the year and I will be a little sad if Zac Efron doesn’t receive any nominations come award season
A+ video!
Thank you so much for making this list, great to see such culturally significant films!
I wrote down the 32 films (Top 25 + Honorable mentions) in my notebook (to watch each one when the time is right).
Great list Austin ! I think is almost a tie between Oppenheimer and The Holdovers, but Oppenheimer is the more important movie for our times. My number 3 is also Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Number 4 is John Wick: Chapter 4.
I still haven't the chance to see Godzilla Minus One, The Iron Claw, Poor Things or American Fiction to be more objective. You should also had include a great documentary: Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie, which is my number 5.
These 5 are, for the moment, "my top 10" the most important movies of 2023!
I would definitely check out Minus One, it's incredible!
Happy New Year, Austin!
Happy new year!
Thanks for another year of fantastic reviews
I love this list! Great video man ❤
Always look forward to your top 10 each year! Many of the same as ours. Still waiting for Iron Claw in the UK…. 😢

Good list. I would have included The Boy and the Heron, American Fiction, and The Zone of Interest to the list. Same for Polite Society, which is beyond underrated this year.
Polite Society yessss
Great List! I love Air too, but i think also Tetris deserves some love especially when I’m comparing with Blackberry.
We love Austin.
Please do series 🙏
great list
I was just thinking about when you were gonna upload this and I got the notif 😭
YES I SPED THROUGH THIS CAUSE I TOLD MY FRIEND WHAT YOUR TOP 3 WAS GONNA BE AND I WANTED TO SEE IF I WAS RIGHT AND I WASSSS OMG
YOU READ MY MIND
My favorite scene of the year is also from Oppenheimer. It's after the bomb is dropped, and Oppenheimer delivers his celebratory speech in front of a jubilant crowd...but the frame is shaking and horror creeps onto his face as he suddenly pictures radiation tearing through the crowd, bodies disintegrating. And as the crowd jumps up and down, slaps him on his back, he imagines he is stepping on the ashes of a small burnt body. A sick look crosses his face as he is hit by the revelation of the horrors of atomic weapins. I didn't love every part of the film but got chills everywhere during that scene and I can't shake it.

I don't know why I agree with you 95% of the time😂
Happy New Year, Austin, thank you for giving your two cents on your favourite flick of 2023!
❤️❤️
Oppenheimer is the best movie I've ever seen.
Great vid Austin! Do you have any favourite scenes from Killers of the Flower Moon?

No you’re good!!:)
Austin, UA-cam stopped showing me your videos. Just now I realize that I haven't seen a video of yours in months.
It's been busy months for me and didn't realize your absence.
Happy new year!
Loved watching this video Austin, entertaining and well presented. My top 10 list unfortunately is radically incomplete at the moment because due to life events this year I haven’t had the chance to watch many new releases such as Across the Spider-Verse and Killers of the Flower Moon. The Blackberry movie def made it to my top 10 for 2023. I did not expect it to be as good as it was. If you haven’t seen it please watch it. I promise you, you will enjoy it.
Wow Austin, you really convinced me to watch The Holdovers, after procrastinating for awhile, that I’d get to it later.

Congrats on another incredible year Austin! Your channel and life really seemed to take a great turn this year, and to maintain this youtube channel under fire, with the consistency of quality that you did, is simply astonishing. Fun list too! Lots of picks that nobody would've seen coming at the beginning of the year, but feel so right at the end of it.
My List:
- Big Ones I Missed: The Color Purple, Poor Things, The Zone of Interest (I count it 2024), Trenque Lauquen, Pacifiction, De Humani Corporis Fabrica, They Cloned Tyrone, Jigarthanda DoubleX, Menus Plaisirs-Les Troisgros, Walk Up, All of Us Strangers
HM: Ponniyin Selvan II, Killers of the Flower Moon, The Passengers of the Night, Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam, Earth Mama, Godland, Priscilla, A Thousand & One
10. Knock At the Cabin/Mad Fate (2 faith-based thrillers from our finest genre filmmakers. Both wrestle with the idea of the chosen one(s) to prevent disaster which others have guaranteed and both ultimately come to a powerful, healing way forward. Shyamalan & Cheang are excellent image thinkers, so these are 2 of the most thrillingly directed, suffocating films of the year.)
9. Afire (Another one of our great filmmakers turns in a hangout vacation comedy of errors. Schubert & Petzold are excellent at exclaiming this guy's stinking self-pity through his perfectly nothing interactions with others, all the scowls he gets to try on. It all feels very inevitable and patient so the way it ends is just sublime.)
8. Wes Anderson's The Wonderful Worlds of Roald Dahl (Yes I count this a movie, sue me. Maybe the most formally daring film I've seen all year, where the short nature of the stories allow Wes to let his usual intersection between meta & personal to bring out some of the strongest emotions his career has given us yet. Henry Sugar & the Swan in particular are absolute masterpieces, the other 2 far less so.)
7. Showing Up (Kelly Reichardt has always been an incredible worldbuilder so this community of struggling artistic compromise is its own beauty to watch. Not alotta worlds in 2023 gave me as much pleasure to be in as this one, and not as many character journeys hit quite as hard or were as tense as Michelle Williams’s here.)
6. Skinamarink (A trip into my childhood, where the lights shining under doors, weird lighting in the hallways, and every possible sound in a big house at nighttime would horrify me and the only comfort would be cartoons. Kyle Edward Ball turns these simple frights into an avant-garde nightmare that comes back to haunt me every now and then.)
5. Ferrari (In some ways the typical Mann portrait of an obsessive, highly technical rebel & romantic forced to face real emotions in a world that ties them to capital but if there’s anyone who knows how to make it fresh, it’s this guy and MAN does he do so here. Racing sequences as a tunnel-vision faceoff with death, frequent cross-cutting between emotional turmoil and physical damage. It’s simply astonishing, and upon more viewings I know I’ll love it.)
4. The Boy & the Heron (The film that most directly comes from Miyazaki’s subconscious - a fiery, scathing self-portrait whose dream-logic seems difficult and misshapen but eventually reveals itself to be confident and devastating. I was enthralled the entire time and even after 2 viewings, it feels like I haven’t quite scavenged the depths of its ideas yet.)
3. May December (It’s a Todd Haynes film so of course shades of performance are a part of it, but this is so much thornier than usual and that’s because of an incredible mix of pitch-perfect casting (where even their histories play into the characters of the film), Blauvelt’s cinematography, April Napier’s costuming, and Burch & Haynes’s terrific screenplay. This and the next pick feel so finely crafted, like every move made in the design and ‘plotting’ have been thoroughly thought out for maximum effect. Another one that will absolutely go down as one of the decade’s finest.)
2. Close Your Eyes [Sad, slow, but inevitable. With only 4 features under his belt in 50 years (though many incredible shorts), Victor Erice has always explored the way that cinema and life intersect, but never quite as melancholically as he does here. What a pleasure to watch a director so far out of our time. It feels like an artifact inside an artifact, something I’ve never seen before.]
1. Nayola [I’d argue this is messy but it just broke me. 3 generations of a family, from the mother who in flashback attempts to escape war to the grandmother who elects to stay still but has opinions and the daughter who actively rebels. They intersect in fascinating ways, complimented by some of the most gorgeous animation I’ve ever seen (same goes for Spiderverse & The Boy and the Heron of course). In a year so full of war and chaos in the real world, to see a film so intelligently dissect the mentality and effects of it was something I really needed this year.]
If you read all of this, then thank you so much! Hope you found it insightful!
Lovely list ❤️

Our top 10 was so close. I made my list a week ago.. when you got to #2 I was like… is he gonna pull my big surprise and include Holdovers?! Haha
The main difference is I don’t think “Air” is top 10 worthy. It was good - and I’ve read “Shoe Dog” and am a huge sports fan, but it was just good.
My Top 10 (I haven’t seen Godzilla and already knew it’d be in my top 10) - and no, Iron Claw and Spiderverse are not top 10 for me, both were very close though:
10 - Blackberry
9 - Guardians of the Galaxy 3
8 - Past Lives
7 - Wonka
6 - Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning
5 - Killers of the Flower Moon
4 - Slam Dunk
3 - The Holdovers
2 - John Wick 4 (how can it be the best action movie probably ever and be any lower than top 3, Austin?!)
1 - Oppenheimer
My top 5 of 2023
- Barbie
- BlackBerry
- Sharper
- Fair Play
- Tetris

Can I just say that nobody is mentioning Dumb Money. Most channels haven't even put out a review for it. It flew under everyone's radar, including mine. Trailers came out for it only a few weeks before release, and it ended up being my favorite of the year. It had a great premise, great pacing, and a great lead performance from Paul Dano. Supporting roles included Vincent D'onofrio, Seth Rogan, and Sebastian Stan.
Thanks for a year of great videos Austin!

I didn't see nearly enough movies last year, but I've seen some great ones. I need to see Holdovers & past lives for sure. But based on what I've seen in 2023, I think Spiderman is my number 1.
As I pointed out in your last video there are a lot of films that I haven't seen that could possibly be in my top 10 and change the list entirely but who knows, I'm no film critique and find joy in things that works for me.

Missed it because of my newborn and haven’t been able to find it since! :’(
I've seen 4-5 top 10 lists of 2023 from a popular youtubers. they usually have a wild card in their lists, this one seems more ''natural'' or expected. If you had to throw a wild movie in your list Austin what would that be ?
I mean I never in a million years thought I would have a Godzilla movie on a best list… I’ve never been a Godzilla fan at all. That’s my wild card.
