HBO just went dumb with their money cuz they knew that they had 2 very famous ppl so even if the show was bad they would still pull some money but shit's was horrible. Succession? a masterpiece, simple as that.
Me and my husband also got married in September and spent our Honeymoon watching One Piece as well. Neither one of us had seen any of the anime or read the manga, but we were enthralled. Also, our honeymoon was to Japan, so we were surrounded by tons of One Piece advertisements. I loved that we weren't the only nerdy couple on our honeymoon watching this show.
I watched Blue Eye Samurai in one sitting and I regret nothing. This show is INSANE and i was waiting for it to be on the list because the way the story flows and grows around Mizu is incredible. I hope they can keep the story as strong as it is now with the next season because they have a gem on their hands and it should not be wasted. I also hope they give Akemi a stronger arc next season. there was nothing wrong with it in S1, and I like her, but it just felt almost too normal compared to the other leads.
I think her story was so ordinary because it was only an introduction for Akemi. Now that she knows how influential her manipulations are, I'm expecting some interesting mind games next season.
also just binged the whole show yesterday! while I also share your ambition to see a greater arc for Akemi in season 2 she grew on me so much during this season alone. yes her stakes are more “normal” than Mizu’s, but once you stop to think of her actual influence in the plot and personal growth… she just is the second most important lead character. her story went soo many wild places, and will only get crazier next season while I’m sure we will only grow more fond of her. this show goes so hard on every level, I can’t wait for season 2
Blue Eye Samurai is truly incredible. i have never felt so engrossed by a show before. i couldn’t stop thinking about it for weeks after watching. it truly deserves its spot in the top 10!
Strongly disagree, i just got done watching the whole season and its good but not nr.1 good or even incredible. its just good. id say its 10th place in this list
Loki deserved to be 1st. Samurai in edo era japan seriously? haven't we seen this exact concept 1000th times. There was no uniqueness 7.3/10 at best. Besides this doesn't belong in this category.
Blue eye samurai is a small example of why I didn’t ride that stupid wave of Cancel Netflix. I knew they had plenty of gems, but they are shit on marketing them. Another reason cancel Netflix thing failed, was, it was more of American thing, everybody else in the world were satisfied with Netflix
I looooved Blue Eye Samurai. The first three episodes are amazing but episode 4 is where everything absolutely skyrocketed for me. The way we get so many glimpses into lives that could have been is phenomenal and yes, I cannot wait for season 2. The ending of episode 8 was everything
feel free to spoil a bit: i just cant get past the first 2 episodes. all characters feel extremely flat, with extremely flat motivations. it feels as if i am supposed to care for them, without being shown WHY i should care. its just 'this character is xyz this cjaracters is abc" and i cant get past it. which is a bummer! i adored arcane and saw many arcane fans praising BES. Does this change in the latter e;pisodes?
one piece live action is easily my favourite show of the year. how they managed to adapt it respectfully, accurately, and with as much heart as the original was just amazing. and iñaki as luffy is the best thing ever.
As a fan of the one piece anime I don't know if the show is worth watching to me but the VFX look good, I just couldn't make it to episode 2. The actor for Luffy portrays him well but everyone else... idk how to feel about them.
Good Omens s2 was absolutely my favourite season of tv I watched this year, David Tennant and Michael Sheen continued to be absolutely perfect in their roles, their chemistry is impeccable, and the relationship between the angel Aziraphale and demon Crowley is one of the best nuanced and complex dynamics I’ve ever seen. The humour keeps the perfect balance of Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’s styles that made the book so iconic originally, and the production design especially in the many historical flashbacks was incredibly impressive. I don’t know if I’ve ever been as excited for something as I am for season 3, I genuinely think it’s shaping up to be one of the best seasons of tv of all time.
The Bear was amazing, absolutely fantastic cast and beautiful script, cinematography and overall message of the show, it might go into my top 10 shows of all time. Just perfect. Although a lot of people say "Forks" was the best episode and it was a 9/10 for sure, The "Fishes" family dinner episode is A GEM!❤
@randywhite3947 Off the top of my head, but some are just emotional attachment so be aware: "Sopranos", "The Leftovers", "Legion", "Succession", "The Bear", Breaking Bad", "Scrubs", Atlanta", "Mad Men", "Chernobyl"
@@alexcoyg3281Wow, Legion? I dropped it after an episode or two. Not because it was bad but because I knew it wasn't gonna go anyway in the MCU and that most of the shows were mid at best. Is it worth watching as a stand alone show?
@@upg5147 Was worth for me, I enjoy it a lot. It is not an MCU show, it is more of a psychological drama than an action genre, which I enjoyed. I am not an MCU fan.
Season 2 of The Bear wasn't as good as 1 overall though. Some of the episodes could've done with harsher editing to fix the pacing and runtimes. Also Claire. Yikes. Awful tropey writing for her, wasting a talented actress. S2 really wanted to be seen as "prestige tv" and some of its artsy choices came off as pretentious. Forks was an absolute banger though.
its worth mentioning how diverse in genre this list is. there is comedy and drama and action, and also animation. a truly great year of content, its kind of amazing how many stuff are there...
Like the other person said above, animation is not a genre, but I imagine you know it so... yes, that shows that there is good content that comes from different places, with different tones, different genres, live action or animation
Loki season 2 did exactly what Loki season 1 did for me, which despite my current feelings about the MCU projects and how hit and miss they've been, it made me excited for the MCU again. So glad Blue Eye Samurai is picking up traction. About a month ago, it felt like not many people were talking about it but now I see videos on it all the time, which it so deserves!
I just wanted to mention Vinland Saga Season 2 that came out early this year. I won't stop talking about this show because it deserves to be more popular than it is and I truly believe those who haven't watched it yet are missing out. For those who don't know, Vinland Saga is an anime that came out 3 or 4 years ago. Its season one was huge success, it's a story about Vikings, war and how that affects people, particularly our main protagonist, a 6 year old boy named Thorfinn, son of the greatest Warrior of that time. Thorfinn wasted more than ten years of his life living among Vikings accomplishing nothing but killing people. Season one was fun, had a lot of action, had some deep episodes. This show doesn't mind talking about deep topics of religion, and after season one ended, the real story began. Season 2 made a HUGE risk, literally making a 180° shift of the story and what we were used to, it went from being full of Viking action, to being a deep character focus drama from our protagonist and how he's been traumatized by all the wars and deaths. And because of that, some people decided to stop watching since it got "boring", those who understood the meaning behind it and stayed (like me) by the end, everyone was calling it a masterpiece. The topics, the character development, the strong philosophical conversations, the tragedy, the love, the INSPIRATION that comes out of this show is something I've never experienced before. It's the first time I've felt like crying out of the beauty of a scene. Give this show a chance, and let's talk after you finish season 2. Each season is 24 episodes, 23 mins duration (including openings/endings), 48 episodes so far (season 3 is coming). You can binge watch it in less than a week, you won't regret it.
YESSSSS i got into Vinland Saga a few months ago, and season 2 episode 9 might be the best episode i’ve ever watched, everything about this show is fantastic, and if you love it the manga KEEPS UP THE QUALITY SOMEHOW, glad to see some love for Vinland Saga
Man, I only got through season one with the promise that season two will be much more compelling for me. And OH BOY did it not disappoint. It's so good. SO good. The depth, the psychology, the political and moral conundrums, the exploration of guilt and purpose... The ANIMATION?! Stunning. I'd give season 1 like 6/10 (the last two episodes, though, would get like at least 8/10), most of the time it was good but not quite for me, overall didn't stand out too much next to other anime I've seen, it didn't seem that new or special, even visually it looked very "normal". But it's 100% necessary, it sets up everything in season 2 flawlessly. And season 2 is a solid 9/10 for me. Awesome show.
Glad to see Pluto. Took an incredible amount of time for it to be adapted both creative and production wise, and obviously the final product was excellent.
Though I kinda find it odd he's saying it's a new adaptation of lore when it's an adaptation of a specific storyline from the original manga that was also adapted for the 80s series and Omega Factor (Albeit this one was remarkably different.)
@@motherplayer He either did not know it was a singular story/arc or didnt bother mentioning it; since most would not have heard of Pluto, Tezuka Osamu, Atom, etc. With the exception people know he's The Godfather of manga and obviously the anime. It wouldn't have added much regardless.
@@kloggmonkey Yes. I went in not realising it drew inspiration from Astro boy until the Astro character showed up and then i remembered the Pluto episode from the cartoon. It's still good even with no knowledge. Just as long as you like Sci-fi/detective stories
20:14, One of my favorite aspects of Loki specifically was how it used the concept of the multiverse to circumvent the usual bootstrap/grandfather paradox approach to time travel while also being able to play it straight when Loki gains the ability to manipulate time by interacting with his past, in essence making him a true god rather than a god in title only like the Asgardians and other “god” aliens in this franchise. It also used the multiverse format to make versions of every character (or variants) and their experiences unique enough to be considered their own person, from this variant of Loki to Victor Timely (a version of Kang who is just a simple inventor in the 1800’s and isn’t destined to become a conqueror like the others), which made what happened to these characters matter.
I was really not expecting Pluto to be mentioned. I picked Pluto up because my childhood, Astro boy and mega man were big parts of. When I saw it announced I just hyped for it without knowing why. I didn’t know Pluto had a manga. I’m glad I watched it.
Naoki Urusawa has probably written the best catalogue of manga to date. His other works are also complete masterpieces and I encourage you to seek them out
I love how "The Last of Us" made us empathise and grow to love inevitably doomed characters, namely Sarah, Frank, Bill, Henry, Sam and Riley. The flashbacks helped to flesh them all out, and got you to establish a connection to them all. I'm already excited for Season 2!
For a show that only had 10 episodes, they somehow found a way to go into more backstory and create more stuff than the source material. Granted I’m sure the og developers had years to think up stuff but regardless it’s really impressive
I think it was the opposite. There were many moments that in the video game have the time they need but that in the series feel rushed.@@jessedellross3245
Blue Eye Samurai is the best thing I’ve watched in SOOOOOO LONG. The characters are thoughtfully written, their motivations make sense yet are surprising, and it left me wanting more. Something I haven’t felt in a long time. Can not wait for season 2.
One of my favorites this year was Lockwood & Co. The actors were excellent, the character's dynamic was interesting, the world was well structured and fleshed out very well, and there was so much more I wanted to know. I'm so sad we won't be seeing any more of it, but it's still worth a watch for being such an excellent piece of television.
If you haven't read them already and are still interested in the story, I would recommend the books! One of my favourite series as a kid, and very well adapted. Definitely did not deserve such a quick cancellation, the cast was perfect for their roles.
So happy to see the love for Blue Eye Samurai! That show came as such a complete surprise to me. I really only watched it because I couldn’t fall asleep one night and was looking for someone to watch…by the next day I had finished the whole season. Fantastic animation and fantastic storytelling!
I really appreciate the inclusion of Silo. I feel like I was screaming into the void whenever I told someone to watch it and they simply said "I don't have apple tv". My favorite of the year for sure.
@@michelleheegaardprobably because loads of people don't want another goofy streaming service. The only way I ever watch anything from apple tv is if I download it elsewhere.
Apple tv+ dont have the same marketing budget as Netflix or Disney+ shows. Ive heard more things about Secret Invasion and Blue Eye than Shrinking, Ted Lasso s3 and Silo. Honestly if apple tv could just share their content with Netflix or Hbo max, there would be more buzz
Fall of House of Usher in the Honorable Mentions is good enough for me. I was gripped from the start and the premise and acting was spot on. Jump scares were few and far between but felt on point and never overused. The existential horror of selling your soul and witnessing the consequences were mesmerizing to watch. Mark Hamill was a surprise too.
You forgot to mention the Mangka Oda himself was there during production and unlike the Cowboy Bebop creator, he STAYED throughout production! They definitely respected his opinions and feedback for him to not once bailed out of production!
The production took so long because they wanted to go on with his ideas. And I belive some things were rewritten or reshoot The writers themselves came to Oda and asked questions. One I know is if in the universe there was electricity, because some scenes needed to be light . And Oda himself went " I never thought of that :o"
The Last of Us is absolutely one of my favorite shows of 2023. A couple shows that aren’t on here and I’ve personally adored are: -The Legend of Vox Machina Season 2 -Good Omens Season 2 -Fellow Travelers (very recent but soooo good)
Already had immense respect for you but you giving Snook/Shiv her flowers took that to the stratosphere! Tom deserves a mention as well bc their relationship was one of the most fascinating parts of s4 to me
Good omens is easily my top show of 2023. Apart from just being a criminally funny show with excellent storytelling and a more than amazing cast, the space it allowed for such important themes to be discussed, especially surrounding religion and religious trauma was just so very important to me and I feel many others. I have never cared more for any character than I have for the ineffable husbands.
I was on the edge of my seat with anticipation during the finale of Succession. I genuinely had no idea how it would end, especially after THAT death earlier on. We spent four seasons watching a group of dysfunctional siblings battle vie for control of the company, and the conclusion is bittersweet. The Roy siblings are estranged from each other, with Shiv being in the same position as Caroline, married to a Waystar CEO pregnant with a child that she's not sure that she really wants, Roman goes back to hanging out in bars, but is traumatised from the ordeal, and Kendall is left alone, contemplating his losses.
i really thought *THAT* death would happen in the penultimate episode so when it happened in episode 3, my mind was truly blown. literally NOBODY was expecting it to happen that soon, it was a genius choice that allowed us to really get into the fallout of that event, which set up the ending even better. I can't imagine the ending being tied up in only an episode or two if my original theory had happened.
Lockwood & Co. has tragically already been cancelled by Netflix, but its one and only season was really good. Cool concept and worlbuilding, with really good characters. I also really loved Extraordinary, but feel like I'm the only person who watched it. It's a British show that was distributed in North America by Hulu/Disney+ Star, and it was a really funny, refreshingly irreverent take on the idea of a world with super powers, that also managed to weave in a lot of genuine heart. 10/10 on that one.
I didn’t like it,unfortunately:( It isn’t a bad show by any means, but…I liked the cast(especially the guy who played George),but CGI made me cringe, the story was too rushed and not well understandable…I was able to capture it as I read the books, but my boyfriend who I was watching it with didn’t,so I had to explain almost everything to him…liked chemistry between Lucy and Lock though,I think the show deserved a second chance
The way how writers managed to end Loki in only 2 seasons with this satisfying, fantastic finale is just unbelievable. Big bravo for creative team there!
One of my favorite shows of the year was Fellow Travelers. Such a beautiful & heartbreaking portrayal of queer history from the 50s-80s. They managed to weave together fiction & real history so well, and the acting was phenomenal. Highly recommend it, especially if you want to learn more about the lavender scare or aids epidemic. Also you’ve definitely inspired me to check out Pluto & Blue Eye Samurai!
I feel like the Scott Pilgrim series was a big surprise for me and my friends. It went in a direction we never expected and was really enjoyable to watch, one of my favourites this year. Also you know that you perfectly cast your movie and treated them right when you remake it and basically EVERYONE agrees to do it again
Successon was so incredible, and watching season 4 each week as it came out was the most fun i had watching a show this year. I was trying to predict what would be your no. 1 show, and of course. Episode 5 of Blue eye samurai is definitely one of my fave episodes of the year, along with Connor's wedding in season 4 of Succession, and flashback episode in The bear
I'm so glad pluto was on this list, I read the manga when I was young and was so hyped when it was announced it was getting an adaptation. It was everything I could have hoped for, the North #2 story was heartbreaking
Dude! I only just watched Blue Eye Samurai two days ago, and my god, one of the most incredible shows I've seen. I was only meant to watch the first two episodes, but I ended up binge watching the whole season and it was worth it. Keen for season 2 as well.
Yes!! Blue Eye Samurai is hands down the best series I've seen this year - probably one of the best I've seen ever. It's just so well done, in every aspect. Writing, characters, composition and cinematography, soundtrack, choreography (they did actually get fight choreographers to do the fight scenes before animating them)... Everything is simply incredible.
THANK YOU FOR MENTIONING PLUTO.....it is truly amazing...although It is considered worst of his works, it has a special place in my heart as it introduced to me to urasawa...
I just finished episode 5 of Blue Eye Samurai and I enjoy the show so much! Thank you so much for the recommendation. It's beautiful and heartbreaking and I'm suffering with all the characters, but thank you so much for the recc! :D
Speaking of Apple TV+ bangers, everyone should check out Lessons in Chemistry. Brie Larson came back to remind everyone why she has an Oscar. (I would also DIE for you to do a video on the series since it was a contained story in 8 episodes!)♥
saw it bc of your comment and holy fucking shit this show has literally been my favorite watch since like 2021. as a neurodivergent whos also a huge science nerd i fully almost cried this show is everything to me i related so hard to it like genuinely. the third episode actually crushed me btw i still haven’t recovered
Pluto was definitely my favorite show of the year! Also really loved: - Heavenly Delusion: post apocalyptic sci-fi mystery following 2 parallel storylines as they try to uncover what happened that brutally shape their environments. The way the storylines converge at the end had me SCREAMING. Also had the most fucked up body horror I’ve seen all year Undead Murder Farce - supernatural murder mystery following an immortal head in a birdcage, her loyal maid, and a half-demon full-himbo guard as they travel from Japan to Europe during the late 1800s to try to track down the mad scientist who ruined their lives. Gets heavy but is also absolutely hilarious Castlevania Nocturne: if you loved the OG series you’ll fuck with this one. Able to stand on its own and bring something new to the franchise. Ending had me SCREAMING and scared the shit out of my cats Frieren: Beyond Journeys End: best fantasy I’ve seen in years that has made me want to return to the genre. Slow building but in the best Tolkien-esk kind of way. When it goes hard tho it goes HARD. Will 100% make you feel things but in all the best way The Glory: the best revenge series I have ever seen following a girl whose life was violently ruined by a group of her classmates. She spends the next 18 years planning their demise and the results are breathtaking. THE MOST satisfying shit I’ve ever seen. Heads up tho, first episode is very hard to watch cuz the bullying inflicted on her is inhumane at best and absolutely barbaric at worst
I've both watched the One Piece anime, and read almost all of the manga, I've just not fully caught up to the latest chapters. Been letting it lie and collect. So I can binge. One Piece is probably the only anime where I actually want filler side stories, just because the character interactions are so great. I still thoroughly enjoyed my time watching the live action adaptation. And I doubt I'm the only one.
680 episodes until I stopped - but the live-action killed! My cousin on the other hand is a passionate fan and he had some issues which seemed rather nitpick-y to me...
I'm glad netflix is branching out into animation and other streaming services too. Blue eye samurai, Scavengers reign, Arcane, Love death and robots and even Carol and the end of the world( which came out super late in the year ) are great examples of the world of posibilities animation offers. Long live animation!
Is Scavengers Reign on Netflix in your country? I thought it was a Max original. (I mean, it isn't on any of these streaming platforms in my country lol, which is a massive bummer because the show is a masterpiece..) Edit: Oh I guess I misunderstood your comment!
Loki was a huge surprise to me. I thought it would be cringe, but I gave the first season a shot, liked it, and then was really impressed with the second season. It reminded me a lot of Doctor Who, but edgier. Genuinely one of the biggest surprises of the year for me
Highly recommend Foundation! One of my favorite tv villains of the year! The main antagonist is played by three different actors, Lee Pace, Cassian Bilton, and Terrence Mann...and man they are really giving it their all. Such a complex character arch, their combined performance as the emperor at different ages carries the whole show. I could go on and on about their characters, but I don't want to spoil it. It's only on its second season, but if they don't fumble the ball they could easily be one of my favorite tv antagonists. Up there with Gus Fring and Tywin Lannister.
Great list. I 100% agree with putting Blue eye Samurai on the list. I have been obsessed with that show since it came out. Another show from this year that more people need to check out is Pantheon. Its an excellent animated series focused on the sci-fi concept of UI, uploaded intelligence, people downloading their mind into computers. S2 dropped this year and it was arguably even better than s1. Deep philosophical discussions, creative action, interesting sci fi concepts, engaging plot with a number of twists. This show has everything. Barely anyone has seen it and that is such a shame. Was originally on Amc+ but now is on Amazon in Australia/New Zealand. This show was done dirty, with basically no advertising and now you can only watch it legally in Australia/New Zealand. More people need to see it. Its one of the best stories I have ever experienced, period. Most people who are aware of its existence only know about s1 since Amc+ canceled it before releasing s2 even though s2 was already done. We are lucky Amazon picked it up and released s2 to the public but I wish it was legally available everywhere. No idea why they are trying to bury such an amazing show.
So glad to see Beef get some love on here. My partner & I started watching it just for something to put on one night, since the episodes were shorter and I'd heard someone recommend it, so I thought why not. Well, we were glued to our seats. I don't understand anyone who complains that "they aren't making any good original content anymore" when stuff like this exists. Definitely recommend checking out without knowing anything going in - it is an excellent limited series that knows exactly what it wants to do and say and leaves you both shocked and satisfied with the ending. But god, it is so frustratingly hard to convince anyone to watch it!
Pluto is CRAZY underrated! And I’ll definitely check out Blue Eyed Samurai when I get a chance Though to be honest I had a feeling you were gonna mention Pluto in this video 😊
I had the exact same experience with Succession, watching it for the first time this year after season 4 already ended. One of the best viewing experiences ever. Breaking Bad used to be the best show I ever watched but Succession joined it at the top spot.
Personally, I would have Ted Lasso Season 3 in my top ten of this year. I know that this season was received quite badly by critics, and less so by fans. Things could have been done better (Roy and Keeley) but a lot of things I thought were done very well. Maybe it's just because I need more genuinely happy comedies instead of the more cynical tone I feel they tend to take.
Season 3 as a whole was a bit weaker, but the episode in Amsterdam was my favoutite episode of the whole show! If you’re looking for a love comedy and you haven’t seen it already I heavily recommend „Jane the Virgin“.
10. Silo 9. One Piece 8. Beef 7. Loki 6. Shrinking 5. The Last Of Us 4. Pluto 3. The Bear (Season 2) 2. Succession (Season 4) Honerable Mentions (Poker Face, Scavengers Rain, Gen V, Swarm, Attack On Titan, Abbott Elementary & The Fall Of The House Of Usher) 1. Blue Eye Samurai You’re welcome 😊
29:08 I’m so glad you specifically call out this cold open for the absolute masterpiece that it is. It’s my absolute favorite ever. It hit so hard. It was amazing. It always sticks with me how she could have lied; she could have said she wants to try to work on a cure, and that she and her family need to be taken to a safe place for her to do research. But no. There’s nothing she can do and she doesn’t lie. She just wants to be with her family one last time before she and her loved ones get bombed to death, hopefully to save humanity. So fucking impactful.
Blue Eye Samurai was one of the best things i've ever watch personally. everything was so amazing to me. truly a hidden gem as it's right now but it expect it to hit that overrall popularity as soon as season 2 drops almost the same as it happened with The Bear that it explode in popularity with the 2nd season.
Heck yeah Blue Eye Samurai! Also very glad to see Scavengers's Reign, Gen V and Abbot Elementary among the mentions. It shows just how strong this year was for TV because in any other year they would be among the top 10. And don’t sleep on Invincible because it was also amazing.
I haven't watched the one piece anime but I loved the live action series so much. It really felt like I was watching an anime but with real people. It was so much fun and I missed it the second I finished watching
can’t stop thinking that Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 could easily be one of the honorable mentions considering the amazing job that is being done despite its messy production
Season 1 was like a 6-7/10 for me (final 2 episodes were amazing, though). Good, but not too special. Season 2, though, is a solid 9/10, it's so damn good in every way.
I'm so happy you have One Piece on your list! I haven't watched a lot of series this year because of time and life.. but as a long time OP fan, I just had to watch that one! Thanks to anyone involved to bring this series to life action and succeeding what others tried and failed miserably!
I was flabbergasted at how much I enjoyed "The Fall of the House of Usher" The performance was outstanding, but for me Carla Gugino as Verna, Mary McDonnell as Madeline and MARK MOFO LUKE SKYWALKER HAMILL as Arthur Pym!!!!! I am Gen X Blerd so you know I F*ck with Star Wars, but Mark Hamill's contribution to other beloved shows like Batman the Animated Series is always noteworthy! But, I think he should be recognized (Award season) for how HORRIFYING and BADASS the character Arthur Pym was played...He beat the GD Devil (Demon, Ancient,Old One, Djinn, etc.) with his resolve, outstanding!
Blue Eye Samurai blew my mind. I watched the first episode because I vaguely remembered hearing it mentioned somewhere, then ended up watching the whole series in one day.
One piece smashed my expectations completely, im especially obsessed with jeff ward as buggy and taz skyler as sanji. One piece is truely part of the reason my heart beats❤ also blue eye samurai deserved to be number one. Its so good it deserves the hype
Yeeees, i wasn't expecting you to put Blue Eye Samurai in the first place. Not many people have watched it yet, i believe. But seriously, when i put on the first episode, i was like, "This can be the next arcane," so I'm glad you're putting this show to the front, it needs to be waaaay more popular than it is now! Oh et bonne année! 🎉
I just finished watching the Blue eye samurai yesterday, and I had no doubt which series you were going to put as first. It definitely deserves the top spot.
I am right there with you about your #1 pick. I watched the whole season over my long holiday weekend and now it's all I want to think about or talk about. It takes a lot for me to really get invested in new shows these days, but this show had me by the throat from episode 1.
For me: 1. The Gilded Age Season 2 HBO Max (I love this show and it needs more attention) 2. Foundation Season 2 Apple TV 3. Fargo Season 5 FX & Hulu (It has been so good but it will end in 2024 tho) 4. Silo Apple TV 5. Succession Season 4 HBO Max 6. Hijack Apple TV 7. The Last of Us HBO Max
I think something that speaks to how good The Last of Us is, is the fact that it can get non-gamers to watch the show. My parents had never even heard of the game but absolutely loved the show. It also probably helped that the show was filmed in our province a few hours from where we live to my parents were also able to identify various locations.
Thank YOU for introducing me to Blue Eye Samurai. I've just watched the first episode and... wow. Just, wow. It's safe to say I'm spending my weekend binge-watching it.
Gonna be completely honest: the One Piece live action series is what encouraged me to actually try watching the anime again after giving up on it multiple times. I am now 500+ episodes in and having a great time :)
Hell yeah! Blue Eye Samurai was a very pleasant surprise for me, glad to see it's been pretty popular. Kind of expected it to fly under the radar. Another (animated) show I have to mention because I just watched it recently is... Pantheon. I haven't watched any "legacy" network/cable TV for years so I had no idea Pantheon existed until like 2 weeks ago, but I love it. Maybe not as profoundly brilliant as Pluto, or as mind-bending as Scavengers Reign, but it's really good. AMC killed it for a tax write-off, but Amazon picked it up for the 2nd season. Definitely recommend checking it out.
Succession has become my number one favorite show. Their family drama, the music, the script, I can't be more grateful to have watched this show from the first to last season.
I wish Scavenger's Reign made it onto the list. I absolutely needs some more attention. Personally my favorite of the year. Definitely appreciate the shoutout either way!!
Agreed! It's criminal that it gets so little attention. (I even had to scroll wayyyy too far for this comment...) It's a masterpiece and it blew me away.
I wish Lockwood & Co had had more appreciation. I love the books, and the show was handled with so much care. I'm so mad Netflix canceled. We needed a second season. The rest of the books deserve to be put on screen too.
The way I held my breath before you named your number one pick, hoping, just HOPING you’d watched Blue Eye Samurai. My god, this show might be my favorite piece of media I’ve consumed in the last 3-5 years. I started episode 1 at 9 pm on a Sunday night, with absolutely no knowledge (no trailers, nothing) and was up until 5 am, eyes GLUED to the screen, watching the whole thing in a single sitting.
I recommend Patriot to everyone, every chance I get. It's a spy caper, I guess, that's about love and music and despair, where the lead character is a secret agent of some kind who writes much too specific folk songs to deal with his experiences. It's incredibly funny and horrifying and sad and you get songs with lines like "You wouldn't kill his brother for doing that, unless you had extenuating circumstances that allowed you to justify that somehow. Like you didn't really work where people think you work, for an industrial piping and engineering firm..."
I also have Blue Eye Samurai as my No.1! I told everyone I could to watch this. I literally said the same thing to my brother, "This is the best animated show since Arcane".
YESSSS I'm so glad Loki season 2 gets a mention because it's genuinely one of the best seasons of TV I've seen in ages. The cinematography, story beats, and character moments genuinely blew me away in every episode - I do hope that they allow more Marvel works to be more like Loki s2, not to say that I want them to be a copy-paste, but allowing writers and storytellers to do what they do best and create some awesome shows. Also I've heard nothing but incredible things about Pluto and Blue Eyed Samurai - I just wish Netflix had given Pluto the love it deserved. Also, Apple TV sounds like early HBO in that it's a place for genuine bangers of tv shows - I just hope it doesn't go the way of modern HBO, which of course still has some bangers, but is certainly going through a Phase, so to speak.
The ending of attack on titan blew my mind. Theres one line, one single moment, that sent chills through my entire body. If you’ve seen it, you probably know what I’m talking about
i don’t know how HBO were able to pull off the best tv show of the year with Succession and the worst tv show of the year with The Idol
And velma🤮
@@JasmineBurnett-pd8bz wild ride
HBO just went dumb with their money cuz they knew that they had 2 very famous ppl so even if the show was bad they would still pull some money but shit's was horrible. Succession? a masterpiece, simple as that.
Now that's what I call range
it is impressive in a weird way but still HBO makes quality tv it's bond to have a few stinkers

SAME
Akemi = the Sansa Stark we deserved
did the same.. i also did it for silo.. great one
also just binged the whole show yesterday! while I also share your ambition to see a greater arc for Akemi in season 2 she grew on me so much during this season alone. yes her stakes are more “normal” than Mizu’s, but once you stop to think of her actual influence in the plot and personal growth… she just is the second most important lead character. her story went soo many wild places, and will only get crazier next season while I’m sure we will only grow more fond of her. this show goes so hard on every level, I can’t wait for season 2
It was just good.
Loki deserved to be 1st. Samurai in edo era japan seriously? haven't we seen this exact concept 1000th times. There was no uniqueness 7.3/10 at best. Besides this doesn't belong in this category.
@@Sumirevins Loki was shit lmao
They are flashbacks
Episode 4 or 5, The Ronin and the Princess is what got me.
The ladder episodes does go downhill a but. Still great, but it did peak in the middle.
i think i paused watching around ep 3, i need to keep watching
feel free to spoil a bit:
i just cant get past the first 2 episodes. all characters feel extremely flat, with extremely flat motivations. it feels as if i am supposed to care for them, without being shown WHY i should care. its just 'this character is xyz this cjaracters is abc" and i cant get past it. which is a bummer! i adored arcane and saw many arcane fans praising BES. Does this change in the latter e;pisodes?
one piece live action is easily my favourite show of the year. how they managed to adapt it respectfully, accurately, and with as much heart as the original was just amazing. and iñaki as luffy is the best thing ever.
Oda was right, he's the perfect Luffy
@@logicaloverdrive8197 the casting made the show
As a fan of the one piece anime I don't know if the show is worth watching to me but the VFX look good, I just couldn't make it to episode 2. The actor for Luffy portrays him well but everyone else... idk how to feel about them.
@@ARandomIntrovert Honestly, give it one more episode at least. They'll win you over
I actually started watching it (the anime) because I loved the live action so much!! Now I am at Fishman Island and I am loving it so much!!
Yes exactly !
Yeessaa 👏👏👏
Yeah, absolutely 👏
YES!! THANK U!!
Honestly I'm surprised it wasn't on the list!
Yes Chef!
Forks was an absolute banger though.
its worth mentioning how diverse in genre this list is.
there is comedy and drama and action, and also animation.
a truly great year of content, its kind of amazing how many stuff are there...
animation is not a genre, it's an artform
Like the other person said above, animation is not a genre, but I imagine you know it so... yes, that shows that there is good content that comes from different places, with different tones, different genres, live action or animation
Loki season 2 did exactly what Loki season 1 did for me, which despite my current feelings about the MCU projects and how hit and miss they've been, it made me excited for the MCU again. So glad Blue Eye Samurai is picking up traction. About a month ago, it felt like not many people were talking about it but now I see videos on it all the time, which it so deserves!
Netflix already renewed Blue Eye Samurai so it must have been getting traction already

It wouldn't have added much regardless.
is pluto still enjoyable to someone with little to no knowledge of astro boy?
@@kloggmonkey Yes. I went in not realising it drew inspiration from Astro boy until the Astro character showed up and then i remembered the Pluto episode from the cartoon. It's still good even with no knowledge. Just as long as you like Sci-fi/detective stories
@@kloggmonkey Yes. It's luckily a pretty self-contained story, so you can go into it without much knowledge of Astro Boy.
His other works are also complete masterpieces and I encourage you to seek them out
Astro boy is such a throwback
That tiktok trend segment made me more angry than I thought it would 😂
I love how "The Last of Us" made us empathise and grow to love inevitably doomed characters, namely Sarah, Frank, Bill, Henry, Sam and Riley.
I thought it was ok.. the game allowed you to spend more time with the characters - so the moments in the show felt significantly less impactful.
I think it was the opposite. There were many moments that in the video game have the time they need but that in the series feel rushed.@@jessedellross3245
Sam and Henry 😢

Blue Eye Samurai is the best thing I’ve watched in SOOOOOO LONG.
The characters are thoughtfully written, their motivations make sense yet are surprising, and it left me wanting more. Something I haven’t felt in a long time.

One of my favorites this year was Lockwood & Co. The actors were excellent, the character's dynamic was interesting, the world was well structured and fleshed out very well, and there was so much more I wanted to know. Silo > Loki 24/7
Just to add, he even said that if he wasn’t happy with the final product, it would never see the lights of day
@@bluesyrupgc4224 Good call on Oda part! Like I wished they did that with Cowboy Bebop!
Yup probably the main reason it wasnt a dumpster fire
Exactly. Shocking that he's crediting his friend and not the great Oda himself.
The production took so long because they wanted to go on with his ideas. And I belive some things were rewritten or reshoot
The writers themselves came to Oda and asked questions. One I know is if in the universe there was electricity, because some scenes needed to be light . And Oda himself went " I never thought of that :o"
The Last of Us is absolutely one of my favorite shows of 2023. A couple shows that aren’t on here and I’ve personally adored are:

Already had immense respect for you but you giving Snook/Shiv her flowers took that to the stratosphere! Tom deserves a mention as well bc their relationship was one of the most fascinating parts of s4 to me
Gregg master race
They Roy siblings might be estranged from each other but they are not serious people
i really thought *THAT* death would happen in the penultimate episode so when it happened in episode 3, my mind was truly blown. literally NOBODY was expecting it to happen that soon, it was a genius choice that allowed us to really get into the fallout of that event, which set up the ending even better. I can't imagine the ending being tied up in only an episode or two if my original theory had happened.
I truly believe Barry season 4 deserves a spot on this list. Great final season for a great show
i was gonna say. its not as good as some of the shows on this list but i think it at least deserved an honorable mention uk.

Pluto was definitely my favorite show of the year! Also really loved:
- Heavenly Delusion: post apocalyptic sci-fi mystery following 2 parallel storylines as they try to uncover what happened that brutally shape their environments. The way the storylines converge at the end had me SCREAMING. Also had the most fucked up body horror I’ve seen all year
Undead Murder Farce - supernatural murder mystery following an immortal head in a birdcage, her loyal maid, and a half-demon full-himbo guard as they travel from Japan to Europe during the late 1800s to try to track down the mad scientist who ruined their lives. Gets heavy but is also absolutely hilarious
Castlevania Nocturne: if you loved the OG series you’ll fuck with this one. Able to stand on its own and bring something new to the franchise. Ending had me SCREAMING and scared the shit out of my cats
Frieren: Beyond Journeys End: best fantasy I’ve seen in years that has made me want to return to the genre. Slow building but in the best Tolkien-esk kind of way. When it goes hard tho it goes HARD. Will 100% make you feel things but in all the best way
The Glory: the best revenge series I have ever seen following a girl whose life was violently ruined by a group of her classmates. She spends the next 18 years planning their demise and the results are breathtaking. THE MOST satisfying shit I’ve ever seen. Heads up tho, first episode is very hard to watch cuz the bullying inflicted on her is inhumane at best and absolutely barbaric at worst
Heavenly Delusion was absolutely amazing. They really did the manga justice. I'll definitely need to check out The Glory
I love The Dragon Prince, as well
Is Scavengers Reign on Netflix in your country? I thought it was a Max original. (I mean, it isn't on any of these streaming platforms in my country lol, which is a massive bummer because the show is a masterpiece..)
Edit: Oh I guess I misunderstood your comment!
Loki was a huge surprise to me. I thought it would be cringe, but I gave the first season a shot, liked it, and then was really impressed with the second season. It reminded me a lot of Doctor Who, but edgier. Genuinely one of the biggest surprises of the year for me
Agreed. All the other mcu shows like She hulk, TFATWS, Werewolf by night, Iron fist, and Secret invasion got nothing on Loki
Lee Pace kills in that role!
And I’ll definitely check out Blue Eyed Samurai when I get a chance
Though to be honest I had a feeling you were gonna mention Pluto in this video 😊
I humbly submit "What we do in the shadows" and "The Marvelous Mrs.Maisel" to the conversation.
Luffy is one of my favorite characters of all times and I cannot say this enough: Inaki nailed this part
Season 3 was so bad it made me realise the writers really needed a strike

9. One Piece
8. Beef
7. Loki
6. Shrinking
5. The Last Of Us
4. Pluto
3. The Bear (Season 2)
2. Succession (Season 4)
Honerable Mentions (Poker Face, Scavengers Rain, Gen V, Swarm, Attack On Titan, Abbott Elementary & The Fall Of The House Of Usher)
1. Blue Eye Samurai
You’re welcome 😊
I don't think Invincible counts, since only half the season came out this year.
Scavenger's Reign was wild and a real gem of creative xenobiology
Silo was a really good adaption of the books its based on! Was happy to see another successful scifi adaption
Shout out to Vinland Saga season 2 too
I would have out Vinland Saga S2 in my list as well, it's so different from S1, but such a great instrospection and exploration of Thorfinn
Definitely, Vinland Saga is anime of the year for me. AoT is my favorite show tho
Season 1 was like a 6-7/10 for me (final 2 episodes were amazing, though). Good, but not too special. Season 2, though, is a solid 9/10, it's so damn good in every way.
You were driving me crazy with the tick tock bit
I'm so happy you have One Piece on your list! I haven't watched a lot of series this year because of time and life.. but as a long time OP fan, I just had to watch that one! Thanks to anyone involved to bring this series to life action and succeeding what others tried and failed miserably!
Félicitations pour le mariage ! Pleins de bonheur à tout les deux.
Loved this list! Definitely think Castlevania should’ve been in honorable mentions though!
The first 3-4 episodes of Loki season 2 had me doubting, but 5-6 had my thinking it’s top 5 marvel projects. The Bear was just peak.
I am right there with you about your #1 pick. I watched the whole season over my long holiday weekend and now it's all I want to think about or talk about. It takes a lot for me to really get invested in new shows these days, but this show had me by the throat from episode 1.
For me:
1. The Gilded Age Season 2 HBO Max (I love this show and it needs more attention)
2. Foundation Season 2 Apple TV
3. Fargo Season 5 FX & Hulu (It has been so good but it will end in 2024 tho)
4. Silo Apple TV
5. Succession Season 4 HBO Max
6. Hijack Apple TV
7. The Last of Us HBO Max
Omg Hijack was a wild ride for me. Each episode got me on the edge of my seat😵💫
I think something that speaks to how good The Last of Us is, is the fact that it can get non-gamers to watch the show. My parents had never even heard of the game but absolutely loved the show. It also probably helped that the show was filmed in our province a few hours from where we live to my parents were also able to identify various locations.
I have no idea why netflix are underselling pluto.... it's literally the best anime out this year
I’ve finished watching Shrinking and I really loved it. Thanks so much, FSN.
Thank YOU for introducing me to Blue Eye Samurai. I've just watched the first episode and... wow. Just, wow. It's safe to say I'm spending my weekend binge-watching it.
Update: I’m done and idk what to do with my life now. I also have no idea how I’m supposed to wait for most probably 2025 for Season 2.
OMG so agree with your list ,loved Blueyed Samurai!!!!
If you enjoyed Pluto. I’d highly recommend checking out the animated show Pantheon.
Excellent list!
You prove again that you have excellent taste! 🙂
Sarcasm?
@@is17a985 not at all.
Succession has become my number one favorite show. Their family drama, the music, the script, I can't be more grateful to have watched this show from the first to last season.
I'm so glad Blue Eye Samurai is getting more exposure! It was definitely my favorite show this year!
The TikTok part made me crawl out of my skin, I couldn't bear it.
I wish Scavenger's Reign made it onto the list. I absolutely needs some more attention. Personally my favorite of the year. Definitely appreciate the shoutout either way!!
Agreed! It's criminal that it gets so little attention. (I even had to scroll wayyyy too far for this comment...)
It's a masterpiece and it blew me away.
I wish Lockwood & Co had had more appreciation. I love the books, and the show was handled with so much care. I'm so mad Netflix canceled. We needed a second season. The rest of the books deserve to be put on screen too.
Yes! Loved it so much.
Thanks for the new recommendations
lessons in chemistry has been one of my favourite shows from this year
I’m a 72 years old and I Loved, yes, loved One Piece. damn downright fun, beautifully shot and acted. Hats off to the writer and director.
I’m glad you gave Shiv her flowers she’s been my favorite from season 1
I recommend Patriot to everyone, every chance I get. It's a spy caper, I guess, that's about love and music and despair, where the lead character is a secret agent of some kind who writes much too specific folk songs to deal with his experiences. It's incredibly funny and horrifying and sad and you get songs with lines like "You wouldn't kill his brother for doing that, unless you had extenuating circumstances that allowed you to justify that somehow. Like you didn't really work where people think you work, for an industrial piping and engineering firm..."
Blue Eye Samurai hands down. Damn it was so good.
2) Shrinking. The DIALOGUES.
3) Silo - Reminded me of City of Ember but for adults.
I also have Blue Eye Samurai as my No.1! I told everyone I could to watch this. I literally said the same thing to my brother, "This is the best animated show since Arcane".
YESSSS BLUE EYED SAMURAI 🔥🔥🔥 I'm so glad you talked about it 👏
YESSSS I'm so glad Loki season 2 gets a mention because it's genuinely one of the best seasons of TV I've seen in ages.
I'm so glad Blue Eye Samurai is on here. Most of these are on my to-watch list, but that one I binged immediately pretty much as soon as it came out.
The ending of attack on titan blew my mind. Theres one line, one single moment, that sent chills through my entire body. If you’ve seen it, you probably know what I’m talking about
Blue eye samurai is everything. I binged while traveling for the holidays and IMMEDIATELY got a person to rewatch it with.
