As some I have pointed out this video makes an error by omission. This was an oversight and I won't let something like this happen again, but mistakes in scripting and editing occur at times. I take full responsibility for this error. The final part of Wallfacer Frederick Tyler's Plan would have been to detonate bombs to destroy the Trisolaran fleet and ETO, this final part was missing from my script and from the video and somehow I missed this in the editing process. I apologize for this mistake. For more info watch this update video: ua-cam.com/video/rDN71JBW8co/v-deo.html - Quinn
@@loszhor The plan was to secretly turncoat to the ETO and have the mosquito swarm piloted by ETO loyalists. At the doomsday battle, the loyalists would turn on the Earth fleet and destroy them in a surprise attack. Then, as a sign of loyalty, the remaining loyalist ships would transport a mass of ice water to the Trisolaran fleet as they would be severely depleted in resources after the four century trip. At that point, Tyler would take direct control of all the mosquitos, rush the Trisolaran ships and detonate their H-Bombs in lethal range of them. As others in the comments said, he would've been a triple agent.
Im 70 and have gotten many excellent recommendations from Quinn. I always enjoy the content. He is an intelligent and well spoken young fellow. Respect.
Okay after having watched the video I just got to point out something. Wall facer Frederick Tyler was in fact a triple agent. The part of his plan that I didn't hear talked about in this video was the fact that his mosquitoes swarm was able to be remote controlled by him and the nuclear payload that each ship had could be remotely detonated by Frederick as well. The last part of his plan was going to be once the ETO Pilots had delivered Europas water to the fleet, Frederick was going to trigger the bombs inside the ships and destroy both the ETO Traitors and the Trisolaran fleet. This is all in the books.
Just the comment I was looking for. I do wish this was mentioned in the video as I remember it being one of the best Wallfacer plan reveals in the book.
I think that might've been an easy mistake to make. Tyler's interaction with his wallbreaker is only 4 pages (pgs 195 - 199 in the Aug 2015 paperback). In contrast the book spent several chapters using the public response to Tyler's plan to establish the public negative hatred for wallfacers, particularly the loss of trust.
@forensice459 I remember that he wasn’t actually persecuted, he felt that he deserved to be, but everyone else believed that his plan being released was actually part of his plan. The guilt and the pressure from being hailed as a hero while believing he was a horrible person drove him to suicide.
Triosolaris: "you revealed yourself to us. Now we know your location and we want to destroy you with our superior technology. Do you have any problem with that?" Luo Ji: *Uno reverse
@@AdmiralSpaceballsonly Americans think that. Way to prove you don't understand. You own a gun.... cool. What is a guns purpose. To kill. It's not to defend you. It's to kill.
Being a wallfacer is the most difficult task someone would ever receive. Imagine carrying alone, only in your mind, a plan to defeat aliens and save humanity, not ever writing or speaking to anyone how your plain is possibly going to work.
Yeah I would pass for sure … I like to think I’m smart but unless I was able to brainwash myself with some seals … that would be a hard pass from me dawg
Not only that but the difficulty of carrying out the plan in complete secrecy by unknown individuals whose motives are not known. You would have to trick everyone into believing one plan while in reality it's failure was key to your real plan's success.
Technically, Wallfacer Bill Hines' plan succeeded in the end, unlike Luo Ji's, which we all know didn't turn out well. The Mind Seal was responsible for the actions of some of the crew of Blue Space, which, together with Gravity, preserved humanity until the final end of the Universe, according to the fourth unofficial book in the series. The seal was always there and Bills plan of hiding it in the gereral public eventually worked.
If Luo Ji didn’t educate the world about Dark Forest I doubt the members of Blue Space would’ve come to the conclusions they did. Also I believe stalling Trisolaris for half a century prevented Trisolaris from hunting down and destroying Blue Space since the crew knew Earth’s location
@@omgjlmiub think its Galaxy that needed convincing ,bluespace was out of there from the get go. They ate their dead crew members to achive their goals of escape. Think that was evidence of the mindseal if any.
I mean, if you were suddenly given all the power in the world to complete a task you believe yourself incapable of completing, what ELSE would you do lmao
Kent was a composed serious man. Did not ask any questions regarding Luo Ji's plan. But he went batshit when Luo ji asked to find a person. It was a fun read lol.
This is such a powerful series. I love that it gets lost in the technicals at times but then transforms itself into true cosmic horror within minutes. Just incredible.
You are the reason why I read this trilogy. I cannot thank you enough. The three body problem trilogy was an incredible thought provoking read from beginning to end. I also have never read something so terrifying. It kind of changed my outlook on the universe, I am always hopeful the universe is not a dark forest but I am no longer naive to neglect it as a possibility.
In fact, there are many things discussed in this book, including the Cultural Revolution in China in the first book - and some scenes in the subsequent two books actually resemble the Cultural Revolution. But I find that many Western readers just think of the Cultural Revolution as "ugly China" and don't think deeply about it. The British neuroscientist failed because he had too much power, and Taylor failed because he did not have enough power... In fact, when you say that Tyler should have succeeded, have you considered the wishes of those who were sacrificed by him? What is more important, the victory of humanity or the morality of humanity? China has long been contemplating the pros and cons of totalitarianism, and in many cases, totalitarianism may not necessarily be a bad thing. Dictatorship is similar. The ultimate failure of Luo Ji in "The Three-Body Problem" is because not only did the Trisolarans live under his deterrence, but Earthlings also lived under the same threat. Earthlings resented Luo Ji's dictatorship and ultimately stripped him of his position as the Swordholder. Regarding the Cultural Revolution in China, as depicted in the first book of "The Three-Body Problem," how do you view it? The Cultural Revolution was not sparked by Western media to tarnish China with “communism.” It began with the aim of overthrowing those who exploited the people, but eventually morphed into a situation where anyone who was better off than others was targeted. A similar scenario occurred when humanity, dissatisfied with Luo Ji’s "dictatorship," replaced the Swordholder, who should have been decisive and ruthless, with Cheng Xin, who they saw as a representation of "truth, goodness, and beauty." However, in reality, Cheng Xin not only lacked deterrence against her own people but also lost it against the Trisolarans. During the COVID-19 pandemic in the previous years, the most popular phrase in China was "Humanity does not thank Luo Ji." It is known that the medical conditions in the United States are better than in China, and its land area is about the same as China, but its population is much less (indicating a much lower population density). However, in these years, due to the pandemic, over a million people died in the United States, while in China, less than a hundred thousand died during the initial outbreak, and thereafter there were hardly any significant changes. A large number of Chinese people's lives were saved due to the government's mandatory policies. But many people crazily attacked the Chinese government, believing that the government restricted the freedom of citizens... "Humanity does not thank Luo Ji..."
The Dark Forest is by far the best book in the series and one of the best SiFi books of all time. Lou Ji will always be one of my favourite characters in all of fiction.
Death’s End is too fast paced and should probably have been split into multiple books, but I personally found the story overall much more compelling than the other books in the series
I got chills the first time I listened to the three body problem (on your recommendation of course) and the concept of wallfacers was explained. A responsibility unlike any that could've ever existed before
Quinn, I discovered your channel 2 years ago via an YT recommendation while watching a video about Dune. Your unique way of telling the story without ruining it for me made me pick up the Earth's Past trilogy. It blew my mind and made me stay sometimes until 3AM on a workday to read 'just one more page'. Since then I hooked up 2 of my friends to read it as well.
This is my exact story. Except that I hooked only one friend. But second one is in the making already... It was just one yt recommendation to Quins video about a dune.
Yup was part of his plan to fool the wallbreakers & trisolarans, in reality he wanted to use the kamikaze swarm to blow up the trisolaran fleet, but only after sacrificing the earth fleet to ensure the trisolarans trust.
Exactly. He wasn’t a traitor. His plan was to act like a traitor to the absolute last moment to get his mosquito swarm close enough to the Trisolarian fleet. Once close enough he was going to remotely control all the ships and have them attack.
@Must_Do_Better Correct, but their human collaborators DO. The only reason there can be any fight back against wallfacers is because of the ETO - the organization of human collaborators. Remember in the very beginning when ppl are recruited to play the 3 body video game, and then those players most invested are invited to a special mtg, where they are told the unstable 3 body world of the video game is real? They're told about the Trisolarans and why they want Earth and most of them decide to take the Trisolarans side: either because theyre bitter or cynical about humanity and want us to go extinct, or because they think the Trisolarans will allow those humans that help them destroy humanity to survive and join them. This mixed group starts the ETO not long after.
Well the character initially worked for the American government/military and the author is Chinese, so... the character was definitely disillusioned with humanity and he definitely betrayed humanity. It's a very cringe and immersion breaking "twist" 🙄
This is one the few book series that I was legitimately addicted to. The only book to ever had me read it nearly 8 hours a day, and that is on top of working 7 to 8 hours 5 days a week.
I have completed reading these books for three times and started the fourth turn. And the original Chinese version is different from the English version which is less good
This video is a perfect example of why many consider this series to be a modern science fiction masterpiece. So many diverse ideas and philosophies all tied together into one giant work in a way that somehow maintains cohesiveness even after translation into the almost alien language of English is really just an absolutely amazing accomplishment.
Since I love Space Operas and Millenia and more years-spanning plots the series by Cixin Liu hit the right spot for me from the beginning. The ideas and concepts are interesting and compelling and the characters are relateable. I am currently reading the series for a second time and I am loving it. Yours and Jean Michael Godier/Event Horizon are the only Sci-Fi channels I ALWAYS watch when new videos are available. Thank you for your great work! :D
Man, I just finished the Remembrance of Earth's Past Trilogy, so naturally I just randomly went to UA-cam to watch some videos about it and discovered your channel. An absolute gold mine, your narration voice is terrific and a few of your videos have clarified some questions I had, especially in pt 3. Thanks a ton!
I love the video, but I kinda wish you had talked about Frederick Tyler's plan in the Chinese versions of these novels. In those, his plan involved using the Ball Lightning phenomenon on a space fleet to energize them to a quantum level, making the fleet impossible for the Trisolarians to defeat (or something along those lines, correct me if I'm wrong). Frederick's plan was changed in the English translations because the novel Ball Lightning hadn't been released for western audiences yet and Liu didn't want to spoil Ball Lightning or involve concepts from his other novels that the West hadn't been able to read yet. Pretty clever.
I'm going to be honest, I despise this type of localization. The reason I've started to read these novels is so I can chat with my Chinese wife on them. The idea the changed it to hide the concept of a future book, despite it being in the original Chinese release, only causes misunderstandings in between our two people. It's ironic that the book also critiques this, and then the localization staff promptly did it.
So that's why it is unfamiliar when I watched 'Ball Lightning' situation in "Three-Body: The Animation" in BiliBili, it is actually in the Chinese Books! I hope to read the original part of Frederick Tyler's plan in English
@@quixotiq Well it's a common thing for the chinese government to make things a little dumber for the west. Like TikTok is totally dumbed down for western childrens, while very restricted and science oriented for chinese children.
Hines was actually right. It was a defeatist spaceship captain and his crews' descendants that went on to establish intergalactic human civilization. Humanity's fleet easily lost to the Trisolarans and were later flattened by a contemporary of Singer's civilization.
If it wasn't for the exchange between those two ships then Luo Ji (hard to say that without hearing 'my boy' following it lol) would never have understood the Dark Forest state of reality.
@@Unit-3475 I thought it was just pragmatism to me. They're not getting here for 400 years? Yeah let's build some ships and get the fuck outta here. Go to Alpha Centauri
I just seen the Netflix version and was honestly surprised, ended up watching all 8 episodes. It was surprisingly on point for the beginning and I though they’d stay away from that part.
Just saw this last night. I really liked the way Saul immediately turns away, telling everybody “I’m not a wallfacer! I never signed up to be a wallfacer! I DONT WANT THIS JOB!” And everybody smiles at him as if his denial is just a diversion.
@@malihaahmed9291 Arguable. While the Tencent adaptation is very close to the 3BP book, they added a lot of stuff and it really dragged on. While this is great for a book - it doesn't translate to the screen as well. It was still good, but it could have been ten episodes shorter.
I saw the first season as well. I was excited at first, but there are a few big flaws. Also, not all of the characters are done very well. Worth a watch, but I think the books are better.
It was your vids that sparked my interest in the series and now my outlook on sci-fi has been changed forever! Cixin Liu blends science fiction and science fact in a most elegant way..

As 88cryingwolf said you cut off the last part of Frederick Tyler's plan. There were to be bombs on the mosquito fleet that could be remotely detonated by Tyler. They would approach the enemy fleet, get accepted in, and then everything would have been blown up ending the ETO and the enemy fleet in one go.
The best part about this scifi story was how Liu meshed ideas and extrapolated reasonable results. This is speculative hard scifi at its best. The idea of cosmic sociology being hostile is just a simple idea, but to combine it with game theory and use it as a deterrent, that is a stroke of genius. And then later on, how the story explains a civilization may declare its passivity and thereby avoid destruction, the use of a children's story to secretly pass on info, the repercussions of FTL travel on light speed, and so on, difficult to imagine the solution when you read it for the first time, but makes so much sense when Liu reveals the answer later on.
Great video as always! The only thing I would add in, probably the most underrated character in the series, is Zhang Beihai's plan and how Bill's mental seal inadvertently gets that plan completed. He is a key player in getting any humans to the end of the universe And I consider him a 5th wallfacer.
@@alexpacino1 Beihai's plan was to capture a ship capable of interestelar travel and pilot it to another star system. He killed several scientist and investors in space to asure that a fussion drive was not the main of propulsion of hummanity's fleet and later he succesfully captured the Natural Selection and escaped, baiting four more ships to chase it just before Doomsday Battle. He died when Natural Selection was attacked by Ultimate Law in a effort to asure the survivality of that vessel but UL was destroyed by Blue Space in the Battle of Darkness. All his efforts resulted ultimately in Blue Space and Gravity escaping the Solar System and granting hummanity a place in the universe after the Dark Forest attack. I consider him the most succesful of all Wallfacers, even if he wasn't nominatelly as such.
Important to note that Luo Ji being woken up late was because he was deathly ill and could only be woken up when medical technology had advanced enough to cure him

I hadn't read any new science fiction in almost 15 years until Quinn's videos rolled across. Now I've got more fiction on my shelf than textbooks for the first time.
I like the idea that Zhang Beihai embodied the wallfacer spirit the best. He hid in the shadows of the wallfacer project, none of his closest allies could read him and in the end he was proven right. I was really sad that his part of the story was not developed very much. The culmination of his plan was easily my favourite part.
So, been watching the 3 Body Problem on Netflix. I love it when you have a Sci Fi show that actually deal with some sense of realism. Like the fact that it takes the San Ti 400 years to cross 4 light years of space before reaching Earth. And they are doing at 1 percent the speed of light which is pretty much advanced future technology.

If he had to do anything to prolong his threat to the Tryangle, they will change the tatic, it could be a different scenario.

Wasn‘t Tyler’s plan actually a double bluff? He would pretend to betray humanity with his kamikaze swarm, and then, after having gained the trust of the Trisolarans, poison the water he supplied them with (or something to that effect)?
Tyler's story is totally different from the original version in Chinese. They had to make up a new story for Tyler in the English version, because in the original version, his strategy was heavily dependent on a theory and scientific discovery in another Cixin's novel "Ball Lightning". which happened in the same universe but many years ago before three-body problems. Most of western readers who didnt read this novel probably wont understand it. To be honest, I dont like what they did with Tyler's story, it just doesnt fit.

And the last minute backstabbing is also the same. the difference is, In the original version, the plan was to use a special kind of weapon from "Ball lighting" , carried by the Kamikaze fighters, backstab the Earth fleet at the last moment, turn the entire Earth Fleet into a quantum form, in a state between existence and non-existence, alive and death. He put his hope on this quantum ghost army still be loyal to their mission after this. And this quantum form army become capable of defeating the aliens. To understand this better, I strongly suggest to read Ball Lightning, its an awsome novel anyway.
I tip my hat to you good sir, this is S-Rank content absolute, the subject matter is fantastic as is Cixin Liu's trilogy and your delivery is superb particularly the apt emotion you put into quoting sampled content. I recall suggesting a future video on 'Endymion' and 'The rise of Endymion' but tbf this video blows my suggestion out of the water 😂 Thanks again.

Good job taking us through this compelling series, Quinn. I actually enjoy your recaps, explanations, and voice-over a lot more than reading the stories. You're a good story teller..
Just wanted to say you got me into a lot of scifi I wouldn't have found so quickly myself. You got me to read the Blindsight books, the Annihilation trilogy, and The Remembrance of Earths Past series amongst others. Thanks so much for sharing these stories.
I feel should have included Zhang Beihai and his plans. In a way, he was also an unofficial wallfacer, and the most successfull one too. He managed to help a fleet of ship to escape and they eventually found several new home planets for humanity. Luo Ji on the other hand only helped postpone the destruction of humanity in the solar system, only 2 individual managed to escape at the end of the day. Also, did Frederick Tyler's plan changed in the translation? I recalled his plan was to create some kamakaze attackers in spirit form to attack the trisolarians. He also considered using lighting ball technology to kill the kamakaze attackers and turn them into spirits. He wanted kamakaze attackers because even in death, they will still be willing to carry out attacks on trisolarians. 🤷♂

This aspect of the book is the one I enjoyed the most, the mystery behind every Wallfacer’s plan was so fun to try and decipher throughout the book and the fact that Luo Ji used a lot of the concepts behind the other’s ideas to present his theory at the end of the novel is incredible. I’m really looking forward to the video in the tale of the painter of the last book, since I think it shares a lot of the fun mystery style of the dark forest with it’s own twist.
Earthlings resented Luo Ji's dictatorship and ultimately stripped him of his position as the Swordholder.
Reading the part of when Tyler takes his life really hurt me and made me sad, thinking he only wanted the best for his plan and for humanity. The destiny for the other wallfacers didn’t hit like tayler’s even when they are sad too.

I can't wait for season 2 on tencent's youtube channel. Welcome back Mr. Quinn and happy Halloween kind sir, this video is a welcome gift for my lazy day today.
I find almost disrepectful to speak about the wallfacers, while omiting Zhang Beihai from the whole equation. He might not been apointed as one, but he definitively played the part and was the best at playing the game (next to Luo Ji). Finally, his plan was crucial to the ultimate survival of humanity. Our bro Zhang Beihai played 10D chess from the very beginning, and it all finished in the ultimate checkmate. Anyways! Great vid as always, I mean I found this saga thanks to your very first video of the TBP book. Thanks for your amazing videos!

Quinn - you may have misunderstood Taylor's plan. It wasn't to destroy the earth's fleet. Instead he plans to use that back stabbing attack with 'ball lightening' to turn the entire earth fleet into a quantum force, involuntarily, and hope that force would defeat the trisolarans. Edit: Tyler, not Taylor.
I thought I just misremembered Taylor's plan but that's correct! Taylor was planning to remotely detonate hydrogen bombs on the traitor ship once within range of the Trisolaris fleet, convinced they would bring water after the human ships attacked other humans.
his plan was to attack the earth's fleet and then present a gift of water to the trisolarians. Once his fighter fleet got close enough he would remote control the ships into exploding in the middle of the trisolarian fleet.
@@TentaclePentacle Someone else explained in details and only now I understand this - there is a difference of this plot between the chinese and english versions of the books. In Chinese version, it is the ball of lightening/quantum army, but it is changed to kamakazi attack in the English version. Hence my confusion.
Man your music and editing is so fitting for this series. Your cadence is very holding too, love the channel and glad I found it after reading dark forest!
If i recall correctly: I think its interesting that it wasn't just one wall facer that was "successful" - at least to the degree where it could be called that. But all three, but Tyler's were. The mental seal, because that makes (can't remember the character's name) escape with the two ships (that also signals earths location, dooming it), Lou Ji, because it made Trisolaris stand down and the Venezuelan president, because that ends up being something that's re-used later in Luo Ji's plan, if I am not mistaken.

I love these 3 Body videos! They make me feel like I've read the books! (Which I will, thanks to you!) Regarding the term "Wallfacer", I can't help but think of the classic sci-fi horror *Village of the Dammed* . To defeat the alien invaders, the hero had to "think of a *brick wall* " so that they couldn't read his mind.
Very disappointed that you didn't include a man named Zhang Beihai in the video. Yes, he wasn't officially in the Wallfacer program - but he WAS a trully Wallfacer. And it was his initiative, his plan that helped humanity survive. He deserved to be mentioned in this video.
For real. If it wasn't for him, humanity would have ended (except for the two gals that did escape, and the brain dude that got shot toward the Trisolaran fleet, forgot his name lol) after the flattening of the solar system.
For more info watch this update video: ua-cam.com/video/rDN71JBW8co/v-deo.html

Hey Quinn, quick question, do you consider the "Redemption of time" canon?
It's all good friend your voice is what makes all this work.
I came here to say the same thing. That was the whole ultimate purpose of the plan.
Yeah it kind of bummed me out that he didn't mention that.

The Mind Seal was responsible for the actions of some of the crew of Blue Space, which, together with Gravity, preserved humanity until the final end of the Universe, according to the fourth unofficial book in the series. The seal was always there and Bills plan of hiding it in the gereral public eventually worked.
If it's unofficial...

I dont think Tyler was ACTUALLY disillusioned with humanity, he just wanted to make it seem like he was so that he could potentially get into the ETO.
Tricelolarions don't understand deception though right?
@Must_Do_Better
Correct, but their human collaborators DO.

So many diverse ideas and philosophies all tied together into one giant work in a way that somehow maintains cohesiveness even after translation into the almost alien language of English is really just an absolutely amazing accomplishment.

Quinn, you are my wallbreaker. I thought you were a comrad. You introduced me to this wonderful series. But your compellnng narration caused me to delve too deep and watch too many of your videos. I've read the books now, and thoroughly enjoyed them. However, time and time again I was confronted with the consequences of my indulgence. I was spoiled😢.
Can you elaborate? I must’ve missed it in the book
Important to note that Luo Ji being woken up late was because he was deathly ill and could only be woken up when medical technology had advanced enough to cure him
That targeted virus was one of the spookiest things I've ever read.

The bit where the woman holds her baby up as New Europa is being squished so it gets another few seconds of life 😢
I like the idea that Zhang Beihai embodied the wallfacer spirit the best.

The result was the worst strategic decision - ONE SWORD-HOLDER.
And no any contingency protocol.

the main point of Lou Ji plan is to keep the balance between Human and Tryangle in his life time and if you read book3 he was success untill The sword project change to next character. The Tryangle choose that time to attack because they know Lou Ji no longer a threat.

They had to make up a new story for Tyler in the English version,
because in the original version, his strategy was heavily dependent on a theory and scientific discovery in another Cixin's novel "Ball Lightning".
which happened in the same universe but many years ago before three-body problems.
Most of western readers who didnt read this novel probably wont understand it.
To be honest, I dont like what they did with Tyler's story, it just doesnt fit.

I feel should have included Zhang Beihai and his plans. In a way, he was also an unofficial wallfacer, and the most successfull one too.

Edit: Tyler, not Taylor.
that is correct.

During the COVID-19 pandemic in the previous years, the most popular phrase in China was "Humanity does not thank Luo Ji."
It is known that the medical conditions in the United States are better than in China, and its land area is about the same as China, but its population is much less (indicating a much lower population density).
Your work on this series is second to none.
Thank you for bringing it this Halloween 🎃
Enjoy everyone and stay safe
I read this series cuz of your videos. So good. The second half of the final book is unforgettable.
THE ALGORITHM HAS BLESSED ME THIS DAY
I love these 3 Body videos! They make me feel like I've read the books! (Which I will, thanks to you!)
Regarding the term "Wallfacer", I can't help but think of the classic sci-fi horror *Village of the Dammed* .

I hate her so much.

And yet his name is not mentioned in any video for this trilogy!
It's like talking about Christianity and never mentioning Jesus.
Define 'survive'. . .
I've watched I don't know how many video on this series from you and I just gotta say.... I NEED to read these books.
The three body problem series absolutely blew my mind. I cannot wait for Netflix’s adaptation to release.
Helpful videos. So much more exposure now that the tv show was released. Grats.
Hopefully you'll do a video dedicated to Zhang Beihai, who could be considered the fifth wallfacer.
