Thank You for mentioning that these breeds are best suited for guarding livestock. There seems to be more and more people getting these for home protection dogs and this is not what they were bred to do. They love being in more open spaces amongst their livestock.
Many of the serious LGD's end up in shelters because they become uncontrollable because they have that primal instinct guarding as their job and IMO only truly thrive in that environment.
There are many great home protection breeds to chose from that are better suited for those types of environments while many of these type breeds have thousands of years of being out with the livestock in their blood.

I've been in Serbia, Bosnia and Croatia several times, and noticed that a lot of people in the mountains there own a Sarplaninac dog. It's a Serbian flock guardian dog, comparable to the Caucasian Shepherd in terms of size and fur. They are serious with their jobs at protecting flocks and private territory. At the moment, I own a Spanish Mastiff. Awesome guarding dog, bred for flock guarding. I would love to see some videos about those less known big breeds.

I don't agree with you about 2 things beca I used to own an Illyrian Shepherd also known as Sarplaninac. First is that they are a bit smaller and more agile. Second is that they are actually from the Shar Mountain located between Kosovo and Albania and not Serbia as you state. There for they are also called Scarplaninac Scar standing for Shar but I agree with you they should really make videos about that dog because it's amazing.

@@Natanist The mountain range also touches the northeastern part of Albania. Nevertheless, the Shar mountain (Shar planina) is mostly located in Macedonia and Kosovo (which was part of Serbia for much of history), therefore the dogs are called Sharplaninac as in dogs from the Shar planina. Planina is a slavic term for mountain and it has no connection to Albanian language, but i do believe that, through history, Albanian tribes owned these dogs much the same as other tribes did in the region. From serbs to romanians, bulgarians, macedonians, as well as albanians, etc.

I usually like videos from this channel but this is just... These are 100% not landrace working bloodlines, these are all show dogs - AT BEST... These dogs didn't see a fight with another dog for a second in their entire lives, let alone with a wolf. These dogs look nothing like their respective breeds should look like. Especially the Sarabi and CAO, they look nothing like the landrace dogs we use for wolf hunting in my country. Too short legs, too wide body, too small heads, too small teeth, etc., etc. If you go to countryside here in Georgia and up across Russia border on the other side of the mountain, you will find dogs that have heads as big as my torso, 6cm or longer canine teeth, athletic and lightweight builds, longer legs, wider necks and so on... Not these abominations... The fact that such a huge channel that is literally focused on dogs and dog breeds, CHOSE these dogs to represent the breeds... I'm just speechless. That CAO, Caucasian and Sarabi are a disgrace to their breeds, along with whoever breeds and sells these genetically ruined abominations. I feel personally attacked just by watching this video. Our abnormally small female CAO is a better representative of the breed than this abomination in the video.
This is worse than watching those videos of deformed bloodlines of German Shepherds and Cane Corsos with crooked and short legs, crooked spines and barrel bodies...

There is one gog, not seen inthis video, but I've met quite some of them and I've seen the results of their work.
The Sharplaninac, sometimes known as Ilyrian shepheard dog.
It is a gentle giant. Loyal to it's core and fearless protector. It needs leadership and authority when they are pups, but you will have hard time finding more loyal dog. And nothing will stop him.
Quite some time ago I was in Žabljak, Montenegro in winter. It is very high, some 1400m and I've seen quite a lot of these dogs there. One morning, quite early, we went hiking and at the edge of the town I saw a courtyard all messed up and covered with blood. A wolfpack paid a visit that night and there was a Sharplaninac on the chain. As you can imagine, the cain impeded his movement, but he still managed to kill three volves. He was wounded, but the livestock were safe. That dog will not run from the bear protecting his flock, two- or four-legged. At the same time, he is very friendly and gentle to his flock.

Nt dog looks and acts like a kangal. She had been abandoned when owners packed up and left. She had been emotionaly hurt by that. Took about 4 yrs to gain her live and trust. Shes obnoxious..i luve on 10 acres and have no other animals. Shes everything rolled up into 1 dog. I found her a job. I have a hard time walking so she helps me. Up and down stairs and etc . Shes a wonderful dog even tho shes a handful. She likes sign language. I always taught my dogs bith ways of communicating. We are both getting old and dint use it much. We enjoy belinging to each other. Shes a jealous dog.

It depends what dog and what wolf. In general a wolf is stronger pound for pound but there are always exceptions. The Kangal's bite force and atheticism for instance, is just outstanding. The caucasian shepard and the tibetain mastiff's size and strength allows them fight wolf and larger predators. Also, their heavy bone structure and neck skin is a great defense weapon preventing lethal blow on a first strike.

@@kevvwinnin4747it's hilarious how wrong you are. Some of these dogs are known for not killing a single wolf alone, but multiple wolves. The biggest wolf breeds bite force is 200-300psi less than all of these dogs.
Also, wolves do not fight battles they *may* lose. They're known for trying not to be injured, because in the wild being injured is much different than being a domestic dog with the luxury of vets.
These dogs will happily die defending their flocks, and they have been successful for hundreds of years protecting sheep and killing wolves.

I had a large portuguese rustic guardian breed dog that were also used as wolf killers, very similar to the anatolian breed in size and mentality; very independent and stubborn. She would totally disregard a command and follow her own judgment. They are not easily socialized but intelligent, loving, loyal, fiercely protective, always on guard, always watching the perimeter of the estate. They are my "soulmate" dog breed if there is such a thing - in my eyes, the most perfect, beautiful dogs in the world.
