The Who performed two University dates for the purpose of recording a live album, having lost the patience to sort through the tapes recorded on the North American 1969 tour. The first gig, at the University of Leeds Cafeteria, in front of an audience of 2,000, showcased The Who’s live act at its finest. The original album featured only six songs, half of which were covers, live songs from tommy wouldn't officially come until years later. Kit Lambert manager of The Who was keen for Tommy to be taken seriously and wanted The Who to perform at opera houses.
The main source of footage used (London 1969) was released as bonus footage with the 1977 Kilburn footage.
The album was mostly composed by guitarist Pete Townshend, and is a rock opera that tells the story of Tommy Walker. Tommy is traumatized from witnessing his father murder his mother's lover; Tommy's parents then compound his shock by denying the experience. In reaction, Tommy becomes dissociative ("deaf, dumb and blind"). As a way of coping with his trauma, Tommy dissociates further through playing pinball and he gains a following because of his savant skill. After a numerous amount of other trauma and misguided attempts to heal Tommy, a doctor prescribes him a mirror so he can confront himself. Instead, Tommy becomes self-absorbed and comes to think of himself as a messiah figure. When the mirror is smashed by his parents in frustration, Tommy then breaks out of his dissociative state, and as a result more people become infatuated with him. Tommy with the help of his Uncle Ernie, who molested him and is only interested in money, starts a holiday camp and tries to lead his followers to believe that the only path to healing is going through what he experienced, becoming dissociative, playing pinball and giving up drugs and alcohol; which then his followers eventually reject him and his teachings.
I’m 71 years old. I’ve been playing drums for over 50 years. I read music and standard drum notation. Ginger Baker and Keith Moon are the reasons I started playing drums in 1967. I saw “The Who” perform live in 1969, 1970, 1971, 1973 and 1975. For me, during those years Moon was at the height of his drumming powers. In my opinion he played like a jazz drummer. He preferred the use of crash and ride cymbals (as opposed to high hats) for time keeping patterns (and accents) and dazzlingly creative fills (especially his use of flams) to create the percussive equivalent of tone paintings. The Entwistle/Moon rhythm section is one of the finest in rock. They are perfectly matched. Their interplay is the epitome of synchronous musical perfection. Even though there are numerous myths and catalogs of false information about Keith Moon, his drumming on “The Who Sell Out”, “Tommy”, “Live At Leeds”, “Who’s Next” and “Quadrophenia” are irrefutable evidence of his percussive brilliance and genius.
I heard him for the first time in 1965 when 'my generation' was in the charts in Sweden. It was just before my seventh birthday and I was totally captivated. I had never heard anything even close to that.
Ofcourse, I was just a little shit. But I still havent and I never stopped loving his drumming.
Mystifies me why so called experts dare to criticise Keith Moon’s playing. Even Townshend has had some critical things to say about it. He was incredible to say the least. Full of flair, creativity and energy and the perfect foil to Townshend. I’ve seen plenty of bands and drummers over the years. I have seen The Who live and with Zac, plenty of vids with the great Simon Phillips and Kenny Jones. But no one has ever quite captured the essence of Moon’s style. Who cares if he only plays single stroke rolls!!! His ability to manipulate the snare, his cymbal flourishes and the speed and precision of his wrists are eye watering. The Who between late 1968 to 1975 were the best live band in the world.
Agreed. He loved single stroke rolls, but he also sprinkled in tricky rudiments in his fills all the time; one of my favorites being some of his clean 5 stroke rolls in Underture/Sparks.
I’ve asked this to multiple drummers who highly criticize Moon and they always shut down when I say it: Can you name any other drummer who played to a metronome live before 1971?
Perfect! And let's not forget, Keith was a great comedy act while drumming like no one else! 🎉
I was just thinking the same thing as I watched this. Whatever you want to say about Keith, the most important thing is that he was one of a kind, and the only drummer that truly was The Who. They would not have been who they are without each of the great players in this band. Keith is essential to The Who sound.

I’ve been a drummer for 43 years. I play for a living and know endless stuff about the instrument. But one thing I’ll never figure out is how Keith Moon was such an accurate sounding drummer while looking like he is in a sword fight.
I also play drums and other instruments, Keith truly was a master of creating a spectacle out of every performance. I feel like his playing has a certain “shuffle” and certain rolls/fills that I haven’t seen anybody fully and accurately re-create. Truly one of a kind player. 99.9% of bands - drums and bass, together. Singer up front. Guitar flying high. The Who - bass is alone... singer up front...drums and guitar play together and off of one another. This was quite unusual and unique to the Whos' performance.
They say that The Who had a lead singer, a lead guitarist, a lead bassist and a lead drummer. 😂
As a faithful Who fan from the very beginning (in other words, OLD🤣), i'm probably not alone in saying that this was their finest hour. I love ALL of their incredible music, and saw them many other times, but the Live at Leeds era was the alignment of the spheres. Seeing them at Anaheim in 1970 was PRICELESS! I still get chills just thinking about it, and watching this great video. LONG LIVE THE WHO. And thanks again for this!
As a fellow old rocker I totally agree. Take a listen to the 2013 deluxe edition of Tommy. It has both in complete a studio version and a live version. The ending of the live version is spectacular!
I think their magnificent turn at the Rock n Roll Circus blowing the Stones out of the water at their own gig, runs it a close second.
The Who have so much notoriety for just being The Who. But we have to talk about just what incredible unique musicians every single guy in this band was. There was not a weak link anywhere. Pete’s guitar playing is effortless. John’s bass playing is seamlessly up and down the fretboard. Keith played a lot of notes but never left the pocket. And Roger got stronger and stronger over the years. I’m just endlessly mind fu-ed by this band.

Entwistle and Moon rightly praised to the heavens, but Townshend the guitarist is vastly underrated. His playing and stage craft is so distinctive. Decent singer too, providing contrast and variation to Daltrey' voice.
All of that is just three instruments, but not played by just anybody.

If you hear Led Zepellin you hear a good drumming. If you hear Tommy the drumming is musical, is not looking like drumming. Drummers not only admire Moon, not even understand how he does it soimultaneously in precisiion, speed, time keeping and repetion of exactly like studio recording. Many drummers can play other drummers songs. Nobody can play Keith Moon drumming without being simplified to an ugly result. Keith Moon is not only the best drummer in rock but also by far . It is Keith Moon and the others. This video prooves it. A god of drums. Tommy is his biggest miracle.

One of the most prolific Rock albums in the 20th century. The way Pete Townsend wrote and made each band member play to their best ability is quite superb. I've been listening to this album for 50 years and it hasn't gotten old yet!
It’s definitely one of my favorite albums of all time. Some performances you can find are a little on the sloppy side, but when you find a good one the band does an amazing job showing off some of the best moments in Pete’s songwriting. I’m glad you liked the video :)

The greatest live album of them all ,the original album with all the paper work etc was the first live album i ever bought, wore the bloody thing out but it was worth it, at the time it was a heavy album and Moons drumming well wow! the whole band at the top of their game. PERFECT LIVE ALBUM with Sparks the stand out track, i saw the Who in 1981 sadly no Moonie but still the best live band i have ever seen and now i'm 59 its still the best live album ever well Leeds AND the Isle of Wright from 1970 which i have watched so many times and i bought the triple live album (vinyl of course) last year. POW!

I saw them first also in Memphis Nov 28 1971 Mid South Coliseum. Though Who’s Next had the focus a slightly abbreviated version of Tommy was performed. My first concert attended, ticket price 6.50 (still have my ticket stub). There seems to be major Who revival in interest recently. There is hope for the world. Per Memphis comments the acoustics of the North and South hall Ellis Auditorium are definitely missed. Thank you for your work on video. Many memories brought back

I saw them on June 24 1980 at the L.A. Sports Arena. I enjoyed watching Pete but musically with Kenney Jones I would hardly call them “absolutely unbelievable”. Fairly pedestrian more like. The time to see The Who was in 1969-1971, like in this Tanglewood performance (ironically 145 miles West of where I was at the time), but I was too young.

Saw them at the Murray K show in 1967. Have seen them around 12 times through the years. The era from Tommy to Quadraphoneia was no doubt their Golden age. My favorite shows were the Commonwealth Armory in 1970 and the two shows at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York. Both were truly a spiritual experience!

Whenever Pinball Wizard is started to listen, I appreciate Pete's sense of music variation and righthand technic.
Pete was one of the best rhythm guitarists of the 1960s in my opinion. A lot of his live solo/lead playing is similar to Jimi Hendrix where getting the same sound and energy twice or to be fully replicated by another person would be nearly impossible. Thank you for watching.

@@BobbysArchive In 1970 I was front row for this show with Joe Walsh and James Gang opening. If you get a few minutes check The James Gang "Yer Album" They do a Yardbirds cover of Lost Woman Blues. Basically it's the reason Joe n tha Gang were The Who's opener. They had nothing to lose and everything to gain. They came out and ripped it! I watched Pete standing on the side of the stage eyeing Joe hard . He loved it . They became good friends Joe gave Pete his 1st sunburst Les Paul . Later shows you will see him playing it and not his typical SG. Another bit of rock n roll history. Thx much man!!!

Joe Walsh also gave Pete Townshend his Gretsch Chet Atkins 6120 that he recorded most of Who’s Next, Quadrophenia with and ended up smashing on Top Of The Pops 1973. Pete was picky about his sound, but rightfully so, he made some of the most unique sounds I’ve ever heard, live and studio.

I just noticed this but I hear a lot of this era of The Who in Rush, the 2112 era. Also, one of the great things about this performance, similar to Rush too, is how balanced the instruments are. Entwistle takes up a lot of space, by necessity and design, but no more or less than Moon or Townsend. A rock band whose bassist is an equal member sonically? Imagine that! That’s what I love about The Who - every player is a section onto themselves. Brillant!
Definitely! It's very rare you hear a performance mixed where the bass and guitar is hard panned on the left and right channels, but with The Who it works incredibly well with the way they all play off each other. Also it surprisingly sounds pretty good in mono too. There's clearly no weak link in The Who. Thanks for watching.
“Rush” was never ever as good as powerful and as tight as “The Who” during their prime (1969-1974).

Overture is to me like The Nutcracker by Tchaikovsky in 5 minutes. There ain't nothing like The Who, bcos symphonies can do Tchaikovsky but ain't no way this could ever be remotely duplicated live

The Tommy movie is a treat, and the record is a real concept album , maybe the first gold record one. Kind of like Rush Hemispheres record, both with incredible sounds.

I missed the whole hoopla re the Tommy release, found out about it during a totally non music endeavor about 2 months later! Whether i caught parts on the radio, or at my cousin's house I was *floored*.
And *very lucky to see them* play Tommy live at *The Filmore East Oct 1969!*

I have a question. Do you have more Live Who footage in general, and bc a I've been searching for a Townsend solo from MSG in either '76 or '79. I shuck my tape recorder in but lost the tape decades later. :(
Pete's going mostly up,v and a little down the scale but in repeating he's climbing higher and higher on the scale over all. Finally tops out w a few mire notes ten I think they slam into WGFA! it's the most incredible solo I've heard him play and so have 20 sows I'ves seen. THX for any help

The best Who channels for recordings and footage in my opinion is Monty’s Vault and Cloo Boots. I’ve also got a few playlists on my channel as well.

This is a mix of several different performances. You can tell by the wardrobe changes. The best video is from the Isle of Wight in '70 (the Ox in his skeleton jumpsuit)
Yes, The only available footage of Leeds is a short black and white 4 minute reel unfortunately, and there isn’t a whole lot of different footage to choose from in this era. For what we have and how much they improvised I’d say it’s impressive how well the band syncs up. In my opinion, editing this video really disproves any claim from haters that say Keith was incompetent or that he was just flailing with reckless abandon.

Very Dynamic........Shame they left out doing Cousin Kevin, Sally Simpson and Come to my House (Welcome) as these are essential songs to the narrative, Pity.
Sally Simpson was played, but I cut it because it only has 1 source of footage, which unfortunately doesn't fully sync as well as the other songs. I think it would've been cool if they played Cousin Kevin, Sensation and Welcome; but at the same time I think the story still works and the flow of the songs is amazing live. They essentially turned the double album into a single LP, and I can see why people could be let down by it, but I love that the studio and live versions are completely seperate beasts. @@BobbysArchive The Who are certainly sensational live (I've seen them twice) but if I'd been in the Audience at the time, wanting to hear Tommy live; I would have wanted a refund. When I saw the Musical Box last year performing Genesis' 'The Lamb lies down on Broadway', they played the whole thing from start to finish.

This is the Live at Leeds 2014 Remaster. It is the officially released full multi-tracked show. It can be listened to on Apple Music, HDTracks, and on my channel. It is a superior mix compared to the 2010 40th anniversary that was released with Hull

Thank you. I did the editing by adjusting the speed by eye, I had to move around the footage a lot because they rarely if ever played the same thing every night. Knowing how to play guitar and drums helps a lot.
From about 17:19 Woodstock. I recognize the clothes they wore then. At 17:16 still at another concert.
Nothing is further from the truth (at least from 1967 until 1974). In the 1970s, I attended Denver University. One of my fellow students was the son of an Air Force officer who was stationed in England in the late 1960s. His family lived in an apartment above Keith Moon. He told me that Moon practice all the time. In fact, he practiced so much that the noise was the source of numerous complaints from neighbors. It’s true that from 1975 until his death he spent most of his time partying and little time practicing. This is evident in his lack luster flaccid drumming on “The Who By Numbers” and “Who Are You” albums.
I can believe it considering how Moon kept incorporating new techniques and evolving in his playing over time until about 1973-74. 74-77 he still has many amazing moments, but I also agree with you, once he extended his kit and started drinking more, his playing did become lack luster more often. The raw live sound of this Opera without the orchestration on the Album is beyond cool

Tough to perform live with no breaks, but tough to listen to Daltry being flat on so many songs. Rest of the guys are unbelievable. Townsend’s voice was better than I thought. Can sing higher than Daltry.
I’d say there’s a few bum notes from all of them in almost every performance, with Entwistle usually being the most tight, but I really enjoy the rawness/lively-ness especially compared to studio Tommy. Thank you for watching!
