Flounting your money to buy big name players is something that has been done since around the 2000s, when "player empowerment" and choice started to take off. Pat Riley bring the "Heat Culture" and actually the origin of the culture goes back to mid 90s. He took an expansion team into a championship candidate team. During early 2000s that movement stopped cuz Zo retired from Basketball cuz of the Kidney problems and Hardaway got old. Then at mid 00s Wade drafted and Shaq signed a year later and Heat Culture keep its movement again.

There were some superteams that were built, like the Lakers with Wilt, Jerry West, and Elgin Baylor, but they were all old and past their prime and had to deal with injuries, but they were still an absolutely broken team. There are GOATs in every era, and everyone has their favorite, and that's as it should be. I grew up watching MJ, so he will always be the GOAT in my mind and I will defend his honor and accolades till I die. My dad grew up watching Wilt and Kareem and (I think) he though Kareem was the GOAT and died laughing when Kareem was in the movie "Airplane", but he and I would get into discussions about MJ and his skill would make my dad Ooo and Ahh and laugh when he would humiliate people on the court. We also knew a few high school, college, and NBA basketball coaches and refs and would all debate (friendly) about the GOATs of basketball. We all agreed on MJ being incredible, even the really old school coaches, like the recently deceased legend Bobby Knight, who got to coach Michael and told stories about him being nearly immaculate on the court.
To me, though, the hardass Bobby Knight saying someone is the GOAT is one of the biggest compliments you could get, because he would tear players apart if their fundamentals weren't up to his level of excellence.
Also, to his credit, Gilbert Arenas was pretty dang good. 20.7 ppg, 3.9 rpg, 5.3 apg is not slouching.
