Day 63: A Korean Conversation with my Tutor

- Here I explain to Juhyun that I am concentrating my Korean learning on Kim Youngha's podcast, and that I am not so much learning Korean, as learning other things of interest via Korean. In so doing my Korean is improving. I talk a bit about the content of these podcasts. It is obvious that I have a long way to go in my Korean, but I don't mind. I am enjoying it. Still lots of interference from Japanese.

You are just talking Steve, you are not really having a conversation. I have noticed this behavior when you speak to people in Korean. You don’t really engage the other person in conversation, you tend to just speak, like an ongoing soliloquy, whereby you do all of the talking, giving others little to no chance to respond to what you are saying. You do not engage the other person i.e., what are your views, what do you think about so and so...
A conversation is a "two-way,” an exchange, is it not? You speak, the other person responds, you listen, then, you respond. When your tutor was about to speak more than three words, you did not even give her a chance to finish, You interrupted with a "thank you”. You spoke the language, but you were not really conversing. How can one progress in speaking a language without listening to the other person speak? Where there is no real engagement, one is just hearing him/herself utter words.
This is no doubt true. However, most of my usual learning time is spent listening. This was a LingQ lesson, a conversation with a native spacer tutor at LingQ. Conversations at LingQ are an opportunity to speak, something the learner usually has little opportunity to do. So I do most of the speaking. The tutors task at LingQ is to get the learner to speak, and then note down the learner's mistakes, and send them as part of report on the conversation. This is what Juhyun does. She is an excellent tutor because she doesn't interrupt and just gets me talking. She also prepares an excellent report. Here are the mistakes she noted.

But one thing WE want to point out here is that you should be much more fluent at this moment as you are an language expert!
It's easy to get fluency in Spanish, French, Italian etc for English speaker.
But not for Korean or Japanese meaning it's the time to show off your genuine skills!!!!

+Bill Shepherd Haha wouldn't it be nice if we didn't generalize Korean girls this way. Not trying to be butthurt, but one of my close friends happens to be a Korean girl so it does make me a little sad to see you say things like that.

높임말 너무 많이 해요. 젊은 여자하고 말할때 그렇게 말하면 좀 이상해요. 한국에서는 나이 많은 어르신이 젊은 여자와 말할때 '합니다', '입니다'라는 말 별로 안 써요. 저는 lingq에서 한국어 공부하고 있어요, 많이 좋아서 감사합니다.
Great point! Yes you are right - in Korea an "old" person usually wouldn't speak to a young person in the utmost formal style as Steve does here. But two adults, regardless of the age difference, would still speak to each other in a somewhat formal way if the relationship hasn't yet reached a certain point.
In this video, it would be rude of Steve to speak to her in 100% 반말 (casual) no matter how old he is. It would be, however, a different story if she was his granddaughter's friend or his son's wife or what not. In a nutshell, formal vs casual really comes down to the relationship between the two, not just age.
But I have a feeling that you already know all this judging from your excellent Korean writing ;-)
