    Tulsa, OK. BOK Center.
    01.16.16
    Great audio by specialk. Great video by:
    / lachrymistpatient11
    There's no footage between the individual songs, hence the stupid filler things. Really good concert in my opinion, and Maynard was quite talkative. Audio and video have been edited.

    I have a good Tool story to share with everyone. I was 16 and Tool was my very first concert. This was in 2001; thus it was during the Lateralus tour. That night I learned from Maynard that I had something in common with the band: it was my first concert ever, and it was also the first time Tool had ever played here in Birmingham, AL. It was a first for both of us. Now before I go any further I should first set the scene of that miserable October night here in Alabama. Either a tropical storm or a hurricane was hitting somewhere on the Gulf of Mexico, and as a result Birmingham was suffering high winds, rapidly falling temperatures, and torrential downpours. It was miserable conditions. Oh, and did I mention this was an outdoor venue? The band was fine; they were covered and safe while all of us in the audience had to suffer through the cold & rain. The most amazing thing happened that night- During their performance of "Disposition" where the chorus is, "Watch the weather change...", the elements obeyed Maynard and for the only time that night, it stopped raining. There was a cool experience we all shared when this happened; the audience and band both shared this moment of amazement. A universal, "Well, I'll be damned! Would you look at that..." type of experience. Sometime during the show as it was coming towards the end the band took a break, put down their instruments, and walked to the middle of the stage together for a brief huddle. Maynard returned to the front of the stage, picked up the microphone and said, "Well we've talked it over and have reached a decision. We think we should give you all in the audience a round of applause for sticking it out with us here tonight in such awful conditions. Because if it was us, we would have left a long time ago." The entire band clapped for us, and naturally we all went apeshit, of course. He resumed saying something along the lines of, "Y'know, before we came out here tonight we weren't sure what to expect. This is our first time playing here in Alabama and with it being in the South, in the "Bible belt", we didn't think we would have a good turnout or response... even with good weather we weren't expecting this. But you've all demonstrated your support for us, so in the future we will show our support for you. We will come back to Alabama as much as we can in the future, and we will make sure all shows are at indoor arenas."
    And Maynard stayed true to his word. After that night in October 2001, I went back to see two A Perfect Circle shows & the 2006 Tool show as part of the 10,000 Days tour, and all 3 shows were at indoor venues. It was an awesome first concert experience to have.

      +MetalSoHard Yep. That's exactly what happened. For that one song the weather did indeed change. You could tell that it even amazed the band. Maynard & Adam looked at each other with this stunned expression of, "What the...? Are you seeing this shit?!"

    Adam Jones is a genius. Been listening to Tool for many years. When you first hear a Tool song, you usually get blown away by the band as a whole. Then you let their music sit for a while and come back to it with a different set of ears. We all know about Adam's rhythmic prowess, but the true magic shines through his mastery of the art of nuance. I wish I could play a 1/10th as good as him.

    Honestly, just the first couple songs make for a great performance already. But I have to say... the big primal scream being absent from The Grudge *does* affect that moment in the song. Feels kind of empty. It's okay if Maynard doesn't/can't do it... but would it be so bad, or even cooler if maynard came down off his riser for that part, walked stage center and held the mic as far out to the crowd as he could, they bring the house lights up and let the crowd belt it out as hard as they could?
    Could you imagine that? I think that would be a pretty powerful moment. To connect with the crowd around you on a gigantic, cathartic scream with Tool playing for you. Could be pretty powerful for the band too, I'd imagine.
    For a live performance that ultimately still feels "lively", it's a shame to see great moments kinda fall... dead.
    They really need a new album to perform. I say that with a little bitterness as possible, because I am happy that in spite of no new release in 10 years, they are still keeping this alive.

      I was in Tulsa for this show and I tried to scream during that part of The Grudge. I was praying the rest of the crowd would too bc I know he doesn't scream like that anymore. Which is completely cool. He's older and his voice can't handle that night in and night out. Unfortunately the rest of the crowd didn't scream as much as I did. Best Tool show I've ever been too!!

    Hey guys! I once heard this crazy, unbelievable story!: Once upon a time, Danny Carey made a mistake whilst drumming!...that's it. That's the story. Don't believe me, well just because you weren't there to see it doesn't mean it didn't happen...

    • @Egoblivion
      @Egoblivion 8 років тому +37

      The mistake was made due to an error his drum-tech made when setting up his right hi-hat during the summer equinox. Most conspiracies point toward his being misinformed and aligning the pedal with the wrong star.

      +Zack Austin Fuck! Are you serious? I always thought The guy next to Danny was the tech/sound guy or a random dude onstage dancing to the songs for entertainment purposes (like some kind of hired choreographer), while Maynard stayed backstage singing because he's TOO shy to go onstage (ever since he quit drugs for good in 2000). It never crossed my mind Maynard was right there next too Danny since it's TOO dark to see him.

    Saw Lateralus in 2002 in OKC. Didn't know Lateralus album much at that time - only knew old Tool. This was the concert missing from my life. Worth the wait. Early 90s Tool built on hatred of the system. We're still those people who were teens that embraced that anger and we attend this concert now and haven't forgotten. He hides in the shadows, because concerts are a contentious situation for a band built on anger at consumerism. Separate the consumerism from the experience, separate the celebrity with darkness. Let him hide. I didn't go to see Maynard. Knew we wouldn't. I went to experience. Got what I went for. Thanks for sharing this vid.
