  • Philip in London on 12 May 2010. This is a tribute to the late great Jeff Healey. Awesome show. Crying slow blues in the Tin Pan Alley style. Actually an Albert King tune "As the Years Go Passing By". Hope you will like it.
Check out philipsayce.com for this amazing singer and guitarist who mixes Hendrix, SRV, Eric Johnson... and played in Jeff Healey's and Melissa Etheridge's bands

I've seen SRV live - 4 times - and I haven't seen anyone play like this since the last time I saw WV in '89. This guy shreds with feel. The sad thing is that rock radio died decades ago and the formulaic crap we must listen to now doesn't play Philip Sayce. They wouldn't have played SRV if he were a current artist, either. And for those saying Sayce is an SRV clone, go listen to Albert King and see where Stevie's style came from. There's nothing wrong with being influenced by someone. Hell, if Robert Johnson never existed ain't no one playing the blues anyway.

Never seen SRV live, only through UA-cam, even though I wish I could, but I was too young. I spent hours listening to different lives, and there was for sure something unique with him that will always fascinate me. Then I discovered few years later P. Sayce from an independent radio in France, and there is something very expressive in his work that clearly reminds me SRV, and I'm not talking about the tone or where he plays it on the neck but more the energy.
Btw, I totally agree with what you said and about the influences. Sayce is not copying, he is just inspired.
(Listening to it while I type, I've never heard a such bend at 2:56, haha)

Right on! Hendrix, SRV, Sayce, Gary Moore (if you haven't heard him play, check him out), even John Mayer have all drawn inspiration from those founding fathers of the blues and SRV was responsible for the 1980s blues revival. All those guitarists have been inspirations for myself and other young musicians who have been bitten with the blues bug!

How could someone even compare this guy to John Mayer?!?! John Mayer is a strong player. Philip Sayce is other-wordly. John Mayer is stiff and easily defined. Philip Sayce is raw, powerful and absolutely full of soul.

I just saw his performance at the Rivoli in Toronto. I can't think of a better word than 'honest' when it comes to his playing.
I saw Bonamassa for 4x the price last summer, and as great as he is, Philip Sayce just absolutely makes your hair stand on end.
He is just so present in the moment and you feel a part of it.
If you do get a chance to see him, you know what you're in for. Just remember to bring ear plugs. No joke, my ears were ringing for 3 days.

Just saw Philip Sayce in Hamilton this past summer. Yup, he is an honest player. Every thought and feeling speaks for him through his guitar. I got to meet him for a few minutes after the show and he signed my 1930s Regal Resonator which was my grandfather's guitar. Just a very cool, humble guy who is a great inspiration to young blues guitarists like myself.

Listen Mayer is different. Both him and Sayce are the .000001% that understands how to play with that much emotion and technique. They both play from the soul and thats why its awesome. Thats all I am trying to learn when I play. He memorized ZERO notes in that solo. Just improvised it, thats why its awesome

To everyone hating on John Mayer on this video: he's not even in it. You can't get enough of talking about him. John probably can't cram every blues lick he knows into 10 seconds like this, but I'm gonna go ahead and say that there's a reason why everyone has heard of John Mayer and not Philip Sayce. John writes hits. Lots of them. John understands note placement and how to build a solo. He can use his great blues playing to complement his great songwriting instead of just writing a basic song structure to put around his solo. No disrespect to Sayce, but come on guys. In terms of musicianship John Mayer blows him and most others completely out of the water

    • @bluesoddity2094

    • @mizzy19
      @mizzy19 9 років тому +8

I am a huge fan of Mayer but are you saying that ppl don't know Sayce? I would have to disagree. We do know him and we are huge fans. Just because you don't know his body of work does not mean that others don't. And a huge reason why he isn't commercially "successful" is because he spent almost 8 years touring with Melissa Etheridge being her guitarist. And even then people would go to her shows just to see him so please do not determine a person's success and fan base by how many chart hits they have. That's too disrespectful to music.

Finally someone who gets it. I couldn't of said it better myself. Mayer has been quoted saying he wanted to be a guitar hero until he saw everyone else trying to do it. Mayer is a world class musician, "A" list, who's blended blues and soul into a modern day pop package, won Grammys, collaborated and played with the greatest musicians of the last 40 years. Sayce is a phenomenal player who's popular with guitar geeks. Mayer has crafted some incredible songs and by the time his career is over will go down has one of the greatest ever. End he can shred to, but he doesn't have to.

Best living blues guitarist playing today. John Mayer is pop. This is blues. This is his roots and what he knows how to play. I’ve learned more awesome licks from watching him play than anyone. I’d love to see him live one day. I love the small clubs and bars he plays that’s where blues should kept. Away from the mainstream public listeners.

There is a video titled Sean Costello uploaded by "lavirosa" a tune called Double Trouble, which was written by Otis rush. I saw this young man a couple of times and he was the real deal.
