You forgot my two most hated things about this bike. The screen wobbles a LOT when standing up and peddling but mostly, the whole interface is slow slow slow. Runs like an old android phone.
My bike seat is silent, I live in Australia and I plug in 240v directly into the bike and it has a switch above the power cord.

    RE: Noisy incline motor.
The new 2021 models of the S22i and S15i have quieter incline motors. You can identify these new models by the inline electrical connectors behind the display - the same style as the connectors used to attach the handle bar wires to the frame. Older models - like the one you reviewed only a few weeks ago - have round connectors that plug into the back of the display.
The old models have a loud motorized screw actuator in the rectangular plastic box mounted at an angle at the back of the bike. It was louder than the fan! As a comparison, the new models have an improved actuator that is now quieter than the fan. A welcome improvement.

I have the S15I but they are essentially the same bike with regard to everything you mentioned. I agree with everything you mentioned. There is one more thing that bothers me. The handle bars are only adjustable up and down but not forward and back. This makes it impossible to get the exact configuration of my outdoor bike so that I have the same body position.

A new 2021 model has been on the NordicTrack for a few weeks. You can identify new models by "2021" in the model number or by the rectangular inline display connectors that replace the round display connectors used on older models. It is possible that Best Buy has old stock - so take note. It looks like he reviewed last year's model.

Many reasonable concerns. Most are no big deal for me. Thanks for highlighting.
I ended up with the NordicTrack S15i and am very happy.
Why the S15i and not the S22i that you reviewed? The S15i has physical buttons on the side of the display monitor. They let me accurately and easily select incline + resistance setting when sweating or breathing hard. Yes, the S22i has the same controls "on-screen". I prefer the physical buttons on the S15i since they let me make instant changes for a) increasing resistance so I can stand up or b) reducing resistance after a really intense interval -- where I am convinced I am ready to die :).

Same issue with the seat. I stuck 2 zip ties under the seat where the metal plate gets tightened. There is just enough space to slip the width of a large zip tie to absorb the shock. If that makes sense at all. Take off the seat while it's still attached to the post and take a close look at what happens when you tighten the knob. It creates a space that gets compacted every time you pedal stroke making the loud thump or clap noise. Loosen the knob and then insert whatever works in-between the metal plate, I just chose zip ties, then tighten the knob. The zip ties seem to work so far, and no more noise.

Andy, I want to warn you that I had to have NordicTrack send their freight company back to pick the bike up three times due to major damage to the bike. Before you sign for the bike, you may want to open the box up and look for any damage before signing for it if the freight company will allow you. I finally was able to get a bike that was not damaged. I love my 2021 S22i. I think you will be satisfied with your decision. The only issue is there is no on or off button and my knees sometimes hit the handlebars (me - 5'11"), which is not a huge issue. All of the pros outweigh the cons. Enjoy your bike!

    RE: Clicking seat noise
I've had two revisions of this bike. Both have the "clicking seat noise". It is not the saddle or the saddle clamp! I have used multiple saddles and made sure they were properly fastened. They all "click".
The "clicking culprit" is the wedge shaped inner track on the horizontal seat adjustment rail. The front end of the aluminum rail moves no matter how much you tighten the fore/aft locking knob (the big plastic knob that faces down at the back of the rail). Clicking gets louder, the further back you position the saddle.
    The fix is super easy:
    1) Unscrew and remove the squarish black front cap on the horizontal sliding rail under the saddle.
    2) Loosen the fore/aft locking knob.
    3) Get a common plastic "zip tie". Insert the thin plastic end into the small gap at the bottom of sliding rail where it meets the stationary seat post.
    4) While holding the plastic zip tie in place, position the seat where you want it. Use pliers to push the plastic tab in a far as you can.
    5) Tighten the fore/aft locking knob.
    6) Cut off the excess plastic from the zip tie. Leave about 1/2" showing. About 1/4" will typically be inserted under the sliding rail.
    7) Optionally replace the front cap from step 1. I keep mine off for when I move the seat and will need to re-insert a zip tie "shim".
The plastic zip tie removes the "click" by removing play in the sliding track. No sound for 8 weeks!

Wow, thanks for sharing. Still, this sounds like a really stupid design choice. Like many things on this bike, it just seams a bit too much unpolished. No off-button. Why!? Clicking seat? Others have mastered this! Weights directly in front of the "delicate" screen? Seems not to be the most clever design choice. The speakers? Well, checkmark, they added speakers and they work. But neither are they pretty and integrated nor are they any good. The fan? Great idea! But *that* fan makes the bike even noisier. Sound like some cheap fan from aliexpress or wish, just attached to the screen. And the beeping noise when adjusting resistance and incline/decline? Really?! Please just make that an option, that alone is a "no buy" for me, I *hate* beeping buttons. All of these are reasons why I went with the Peloton Bike+ (oh and: Apple GymKit). It will be delivered in May, so I hope I made the correct decision but we'll see.-

I love my S22i! The manual says you should always unplug the bike when not using it otherwise you can cause some potential damage to it. I would not want to risk any harm to the bike and possible warranty issues if I left it plugged in. BTW my wife uses a Nordic Track treadmill with a display and it also says to unplug it when not using it for the same reasons. So I burn a few extra calories unplugging the cord each and every time I finish my exercise and start my exercise (not a big deal!) My seat will make the same clicking noise but I found that if I sit further back on the seat it stops, just not a huge deal for me. I replace the pedals with Spd clip-on pedals, in fact, I ordered the pedals and had them a couple of weeks before the bike was delivered thanks to your review for pointing that out. I would definitely recommend switching out the pedals for a better riding experience. As for the noise of the incline and decline I really do not find it a problem. I do wear my AirPod Pros so maybe that helps but the benefit of having the iFit controlled incline and decline during the rides totally out ways any noise issue in my opinion. I'm not a fan of the Studio ride workouts and I really enjoy the iFit outdoor Road rides a lot. I just completed a great 12 ride series in the Carolinas with the iFit Trainer George Hincapie which was fantastic and the S22i's incline and decline feature really made it a much better and more realistic experience with all the hills on these back Carolina mountain roads. Overall I'm really loving this Nordic Track S22i!

"The manual says you should always unplug the bike when not using it otherwise you can cause some potential damage to it." lol what the heck. I mean leaving it plugged in obviously shortens the lifetime of the electronics but that's just a joke that they "forgot" the on/off switch. I mean just think about power consumption. I guess that's where you notice the background of this bike: They come from the gym background and in commercial gyms one wouldn't turn off the bike while the gym is open...

about the pedals...yeah, I am not at the level to clip in. I'm very new to these bikes and we bought this bike mostly because the outdoor rides looked like they would be more fun than an indoor class. The pedals do not bother me at all. I would like to turn the screen off though. We didn't find building it to be very difficult, but we had two people to help. It is very heavy. Ours was delivered to our house. We still had to move the box a bit to get it to where we were going to build it. The seat itself is terrible. I replaced it. It was not comfortable at all. However the original seat did not make any noise when I used it.

Hi I had the same problem with the seat noise. I managed to fix it as follow : unscrew the little screw which is at the front of the horizontal part which is just below the saddle. You'll get access to the origin of that noise if you look inside with some light and pushing up and down the saddle as you do in the video. Once you'll have seen the two metal parts which are touching and doing that noise, just insert between them a little piece of paper that you will have folded two or three times. It does not clunk any more ! Hope it will last...

So a couple of other issues I have:
Many times the iFit app just stops running during a workout. Sometimes it starts back where it was interupted, sometimes it doesnt. When it doesnt, your data is lost from the workout.
The touch screen sucks. Sometimes it responds slowly. Sometimes you have to touch the screen multiple times to get an iFit app to start.
If you dont check the handle bar tightnes, expect it to suddenly drop during a workout.
The bike is smook though. Most issues I have are with the iFit app though and not the actual bike.

I'm 6'4, 240lbs. I haven't had the seat click issue, figure it is a bike specific issue. Most of the "hated" aspects are pretty minor, and easy to just "live with". What is not easy to "just live with" is the lack of fore aft adjustment of the handlebars. I cannot get in a decent riding position, especially at incline or when I stand. I am just too far back and my knees hit the bars' because I come so far forward when I stand.8 For me it was a deal breaker as I can't use it as a "spin bike" which I was hoping for. My wife who is 5' 9 is in the sweet spot for bar position. After 30 rides (cause I do like the "outdoor" led rides and how quiet it is) I went back to my wheel on Tacx Flow smart trainer, and am planning to buy a direct mount for next winter.

@@BuckeyeGirl I have only tried spinning with cages at the gym at some point but I always thought the clip ins must be much better. I think there is a good reason why Peloton just gives the clip-ins as the standard. Many people would otherwise choose the cages just because it seems easier. Less equipment etc. - however by defaulting to clip-ins, Peloton might lead their customers to a better overall experience. Actually not only clever marketing because they can make some extra bucks by the shoes but also because many beginners won't know the difference of those two things.

*** Idea for next your review **: iFit has an interesting feature: You can change *resistance* in an instructor lead class or ride without effecting how the incline is remotely controlled. This causes the NordicTrack bike to proportionately increase or decrease all incline / decline events in the video.
For example, I really like the iFit North Carolina riding series hosted by former US pro rider George Hincapie. Fun rides but most are too easy - which is particularly odd since I am 62 years old have much less endurance than in the past. By raising only the resistance setting to let's say 8-10, the effort over the entire ride is proportionally increased for all incline and decline changes. Very nice and very useful. Can other bikes do the same? How useful are their options?

Pedals? Give me a break. If you ride with clip-less pedals like I do, you bring your own pedals that also fit your outdoor cycling shoes. Shimano cleats? No, I ride with Campy cleats. So selling me a bike with high-end pedals that don't fit my shoes would really hack me off.

Great video! My seat DOES make that clicking noise and it is pretty annoying especially for a $2,000 bike. I love this bike otherwise. The fact that it has no power switch is very odd. I think the manual says to unplug it from the wall receptacle every time you use it which is kind of impractical. I solved this by plugging it into a surge protector. This protects the electronics and gives you a switch to turn it off and on.

Mine has a switch, but I plugged it into a surge protector power strip to reduce the switch fatigue. I’ve already had to replace the resistance motor after my first year and feel the long term quality of these bike components are suspect. Also, you didn’t mention the poor quality of the software, I have to manually restart my bike after each program or it crashes. I’m in the most recent version of the software and it’s just super buggy

Loved this review - thank you! I'm an avid cyclist so just recently made the plunge for an indoor trainer. I haven't had mine very long, but do agree with many of your quirks. For such an advanced bike, these gross oversights really make me wonder. I replaced the pedals the first day (Ulterga) to match my road bike shoes. Check. My seat doesn't have the same issue as yours exhibits, and I've not had any issue with it (as many others complain about). The one additional complaint that I do have is when using a heart rate monitor, the display won't allow you to simultaneously display your heart-rate along with the resistance (when you are displaying the leaderboard). It's mind boggling to me that you can't simultaneously display your Watts, Heart-rate and Resistance at the same time while trying to hammer up the leaderboard. Imagine driving a car where you had to constantly be pressing your dashboard to switch between the speedometer and tach! Anyway - great review here - thanks!

I wish Joe Rogan would do a podcast on suckass businesses like Nordictrack. I am pretty big into fitness and finally earned enough to get a Nordictrack 2450 treadmill new. Damn thing cost me 2K. After 2 months from buying it, the base platform split down the middle. Nordictrack insisted I had to install the mailed replacement. Like changing a tire...OK. 1-2 hours later, I had it going again only to have it the same day shut off at random times, while running fast or slow. They mailed me a new motherboard to install. I insisted on a tech this time to do the labor. They say none are available, so it sits unused for 2 months. Nordictrack gives capitalism a bad name. I pray for their business downfall. I hate you Nordictrack!

You should simply look at the specifications of the alexa plug and how much the max power is it can switch. Then look at the power brick and look what it takes as the max input wattage. If the latter one is higher than what the alexa plug supports: Don't use it. If it's within that range, it should be fine.

Exactly. I have an s15i, which is pretty much the same. I HATE the incompetent customer service, the cheapness of the components. For instance I stayed of using galvanized steel and screws/bolts that don’t rust, they took the least expensive route possible. The bike rusts, even in a dry climate. They’ve told me it shouldn’t rust even though I wipe it down after each ride. IFit/NordicTrack are clowns. The people who developed the hardware/software are obviously not fitness enthusiasts, otherwise they would have put more thought into it. Unless, of course, obsolescence was their main goal in building this tank.

I think he reviewed an older 2020 model. The new 2021 model (with 2021 part number) claims to have the following improvements:
      1) Quieter incline motor. I've used both and can confirm the newer model is quieter.
      2) Faster CPU with more RAM. Can't say I could tell. Both the 2021 and 2019 models drop the occasional video frame when the screen is busy or a remote incline change has been triggered. Not a big concern either way.
      3) Upgraded display. Again, I didn't notice. The 2019 display was fine.

The issue I believe many people would have is when spending $2,000 plus dollars for the S22i you should not get anything less than a HD or 4K screen, and a decent processor to keep up. I had the 2020 S22i, and now have the 2021 S22i, and the upgrade over the 2020 and older model is a welcome addition.

    • @NotElvis
      @NotElvis 3 роки тому +1

@@terencejlewis I agree. All NordicTrack "Commercial" bikes use Android tablets for both display and control. This is near the upper limit of what these tablets can handle.
I know $2000 is a lot of money. There are still tradeoffs. The NordicTrack has a decent display attached to a very good magnetic resistance spin bike with a novel incline feature. The Peloton has a better display connected to an adequate bike. After 4 months of trials, I couldn't accept the compromises with either bike. I bought a Stages SB20 Smart Bike (stagescycling.com/us/stagesbike/) and outfitted it with the software and displays that I really wanted. All in, it cost me double the price of the NordicTrack. I have all the flexibility I want but am the first to admit: The NordicTrack is 80% of my Stages bike at half the price. I think the NordicTrack is the best $2000 trainer. Getting a little more will cost you a lot more. Cheers!
