- Hey everyone! Here's the next episode of Chordplay with The Chords Of Jeff Buckley. The late-great vocalist/guitarist Jeff Buckley was the son of the late-great 1960s-1970s avant-garde folk-rock musician - Tim Buckley. Jeff erupted on the scene shortly after the release of his debut album 'Grace' in 1994, and while it was the only album released in his lifetime, it's a gem of an album loaded with great music, expressive vocals, and beyond-inspiring guitar work throughout.
The ideas shared in this lesson were pulled from Jeff's seminal album and include an assortment of some of my favorite chord-based moments. This includes songs such as the title track 'Grace,' 'Mojo Pin,' 'So Real,' 'Lover You Should've Come Over,' 'Lilac Wine,' and much more!
Needless to say, if you're a Jeff Buckley fan, a fan of timeless and well-composed music/guitar parts, not to mention a player looking to explore an entirely new universe of interesting chord voicings/progressions - this lesson is totally for you! Give this episode a view, leave some comments/feedback, and please subscribe to Late Night Lessons - THANK YOU!

Hey gang! I goofed on Jeff's early history - Paul GIlbert was a classmate of Jeff's - not an instructor.
Jeff graduated from GIT in 1985 and Paul started teaching at GIT in 1985, so I confused the timeline and messed up that part of the history.
Sorry about that - my bad. Mistakes happen, I should know, I make them all the time.

Everything else seems okay, so dig in and Happy Holidays!
Jeff is one of my favorite singer/songwriters. Such a beautiful voice, interesting chord choices and such deep emotion overall. Taken way too soon. R.I.P Jeff.🥰😍
The fact we only got one studio album from this man is one of the saddest things ever to happen to music.
Well, I’ve just woken at 3am….and this pops up. JB GRACE, My favourite album of ALL time ALL genres. Dave …doth my cap. Thank goodness for my insomnia
When David Brewster says "it goes something like this" you can be pretty sure it's just like the record.
Can't get enough of Buckley's musics at the moment. This video is such an amazing way to show all the cool chords he uses!
I know how to play Lover ….. instantly started playing along with you …awesome stuff
Great lesson, Jeff was a genius with chord voicings
Fantastic lesson. I have no idea how you figured all this out, but thank you. Lover is a great song. I can play most of it, but that bridge... Now I can get it down, thanks to you!
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEES!!!
Thats what i was waiting for. Thank you so much man, you are my favourite music youtuber. Learned a lot from these videos. Love your personality too
First of all, thanks for giving Jeff his deserved dues , as a musician, his voice ,was something that ,when I first heard it,was left wondering ,how does anyone make you feel so much emotion ,with such ethereal supernatural sounds, next, thanks ,for all you do,your love of music and guitar ,just stands out ,I am still wondering why you dont have more subs ,I have discovered ,so many artists because of your channel, and lastly ,wishing you & your family ,a happy Xmas ,and look forward ,to hearing, where you take your channel in 2023,peace.
Jeff's Grace and Cornell's Euphoria Morning, were the two albums that opened up my musical mind to new possibilities. I got away from the whole shred/virtuoso vibe and started to focus more on songwriting, melody and use my ears, rather than theoretical knowledge. It totally changed me as a musician.
Brilliant! Thanks, David! "So Real," is probably my favorite, too. There's a LIVE video "unplugged" version of "So Real" (recorded in a radio station studio) that is so amazing, that's a bonus video, on his great LIVE DVD.
Thanks for this David. Grace is such an amazing album and Jeff's voice and guitar playing are legendary. Pure genius. Breaks my heart that he was taken from us so young and with so much more to give.
Oh man. I love the haunting dissonance of the chord voicings. These would be totally cool in a crescendo before you bring it down into a quiet part. Thank you for this lesson.🔥
Brother, you are a great player and teacher! Thanks for covering the GREAT Jeff Buckley.
Hey man what up man I'm digging some of these all clean tone lessons. I was out of pocket for a minute, anyways I was able to keep up on your lessons. 🙏 Thank you for the past great year of lessons. I'm definitely looking forward to see what the chanel does in 2023. Hope you and your family and friends have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year peace ✌️🕊️
Good Evening Dave,
Thanks so much for this lesson. Hope you and yours have a Wonderful and Blessed Holiday season! I've become a better guitar/musician because of you sharing your passion with all of us.
Love buckley, Lover you should've come over was one of the first songs of his I learned. Learning his songs and whatnot have drastically improved my playing and songwriting over the years. So sad he left this world so early.
What a statement from Bowie 👏..grace intro is definitely something special and beautiful
The best. Legendary album and artist .. but I totally feel he's underrated. Other than HALLELUJAH, no one knows him... SO REAL is my all time favorite. Chords, vocals, tension. It's alll there.i miss him..his posthumous stuff is great too
Super interesting lesson. Thanks
Grace is one of my fave albums for sure. Brilliant.

In addition to amazing lessons, now you've turned me on to this artist. Thank you, Mr Brewster! Merry Christmas!
Outstanding lesson! Plenty to learn from this! Thank you!
probably the best video I've seen about discussing Jeff Buckley's chords and musicianship!
thanks a lot man!
Nice insights. . Lilac wine , my fav, was a cover of a very old song written by James Shelton
I like Jeff Buckleys chords, His dad died very unusual also. I like those 90's bands that used unusual chords like Blind Melon, Stone Gossard uses different tunings and unusual chords in pearl jams not your stock major and minor chords, STP Dean Deleo for STP 4th and 5th albums got darker with more slash chords and unusual chords. You should dive into these bands and make more video lessons to learn more chord vocabulary from them. Ariel Posen plays behind the slide chords which you can make a video lesson about Ariel Posen behind the slide licks.
Don't forget Sketches for my Sweetheart! It has a fantastic song- Vancouver ! Plus the Grace Deluxe edition has quite a few more songs.
great Chordplay lesson, your hard work is much appreciated......Thank You
Haven't listen to Jeff in about 10yrs. Thanks for this one👍🤘🏻🤘🏻
I adore Jeff Buckley's music but before watching this fantastic episode I had no idea he was such an advanced guitarist. I always learn something new from Late Night Lessons!
Nice review and lesson. Truly a masterpiece album and a stellar musician (as well as Gary Lucas etc).
Thanks Dave ...love Jb
We may only have one album, but we have Live at Sin-E, and that's a treasure trove!
First half of Sketches is also masterful 🫠
@@davidlawrence6464Thanks for the tip.
Sketches for my sweetheart the drunk has some great Jeff Buckley songs - Vancouver being a favourite amongst others
Hey David. Big fan here. First of all, want to thank you for the great, amazing work you do here, and what a guitar player you are!
I don't want to be negative but i think that in Lover You've Should Come Over (Bridge) you do play that part harder that it has to be. It's way simpler the original one.
Just my share on that.
Thank you for your amazing work!
Awesome chord progressions, great lesson 👌🎸
Loved your frank lessons and I'm happy you are giving some guitar info on Buckley. People tend to focus on his majestic voice but underneath that, there's a virtuoso guitar masterwork and a unique approach to rhythm that you hardly ever see anywhere else. If you really wanna hear what he's capable of you check "live at Sin-é" album. At one point he goofs around fucking with people mocking an Indian song; everybody's laughing until everyone realizes he was being serious and at that point everybody shuts up and you can hear this white dude alone with a telecaster playing goddamn indian music in Open E, sometimes mixing some grunge and led zeppelin in it for the sake of it. Pure absolute mastery of the instrument.
Thanks for the video.
For Grace the pre chorus is E m B7 Em .... i guess
Merry Christmas Dave!
Diggin the tele
Yes! It's very nice!
I had a transcription book for the Grace album. Don’t know how accurate it was but the fingers were pretty insane!
The opening to "Grace" reminds me of King Crimson of all things...
5:36 new Tele looks great!
That was great, thank you. I always try and find a really difficult (for me) song every christmas time to learn - and you have really encouraged me with the song Grace! Out of my comfort zone, but like most of us, I adore his big reverby tele sound, so lush and dynamic. I only selfishly wish you broke down these entire songs! :)
that is some badass writing
Whoa! Where'd that Tele come from?😳
To get a more clear look on his guitar work id really recommend you check out the live at Sin-e album.
Its just him and his guitar and nothing else.
And I'd really love to see u make a video on that if u felt interested
Jeff Buckley was amazing.
I didn’t know much about this guy, but I hear a lot of Physical Graffiti side 3 and rain song kinda stuff in this.
He also rocked the fuck out live
Could you do Chordplay videos on Muse and Silverchair?
Such weird chord progressions from such an amazing songwriter.
❤❤❤❤❤
Just a friendly correction, but I believe he went swimming in the evening around 6pm.
Ethereal
👍
I checked the album out awhile back, and while it's decent, I didn't believe it lived up to the hype. I just wonder, if he was still alive, would people still be all that crazy about it?
I love it.
No offense but Grace isn’t a record to be spoon fed in one serving. It’s work, but once it gets in your DNA it’s a gift. The live interpretations of these songs were actually quite heavy.
subb3d cuz the lesson is great. could use some better audio production tho brotha. get on it and keep pumping these out!
thats not the chords to so real
Upon first hearing, his voice is compelling. But after a while, it feels like a gimmick. A one-trick pony. It’s like, okay. What else can he do, besides that thing? Unfortunately he did not live long enough to find out.
Which begs the question: Who wades into a river at night fully clothed, not even removing his heavy boots? And his “friend” is more concerned about saving the boom box player from the waves washing up on the river bank, than the guy in the river about to drown? No drugs, no alcohol. Suicide?
