I have an alternate theory on this concept. I think boos are the result of Bowser's curse in the first game, meaning anyone who died prior to its casting remains more humanoid whereas anyone afterwards becomes a boo.

Look at the world we live in - we have beautiful landscapes, scenic mountains, trickling rivers, and calm seas. Seemingly without warning they can turn earthquakes, devastating volcanic eruptions, tidal waves, and floods. It only makes sense that thousands of years ago people would see all of these, spread stories of floods, storms, and vast mountains. They’d see unfathomable events and naturally think there‘s some element of control. Add all of these factors, throw in a bit of human creativity, and you get the perfect conditions for any number of mythology. Similar to looking up at the clouds and imagining shapes in them, just on a much larger scale.
Not that it makes a huge difference, but since Smash Bros. is canonically toys being played with, Luigi's death in the Smash Bros. reveal can't be taken as canon.
That was true in Smash 64. In Brawl they're animate trophies, and that also seems to be the case in Melee, as their stage entrance animations look a bit like what Brawl later revealed to be the process of a fighter trophy coming to life. Smash Ultimate hasn't given any information on this, so maybe they are toys, but we have no reason to assume this is the case. As you pointed out, Grambi doesn't seem to be all that powerful in the grand scheme of things, and definitely isn't the creator of the universe, that being the Stars. Grambi could perhaps be seen as *a* god of the afterlife, perhaps, since some junior-league gods to exist in the Mario universe even if they aren't on the scale of a creator deity which Mario *doesn't* really seem to have. But even then, in Japanese the power over life and death is outright named "Jaydes Magic", which alongside what we see implies that Jaydes is the one of the two with far more power. Anyway, basically the two are probably just primordial guardians and keepers of the afterlife and maybe of life and death in general, rather than literal stand-ins for a capital-G God, like you said.

Much like the game SMB3 is a dramatization of real events we never see, the Mario Story book also portrays real events that have actually happened, and in fact being as story focused as they are the Paper Mario games have the most explicit continuity connective tissue in the entire franchise. To throw all that out because of a C-tier spin off nobody's ever played and fewer people even know exist is insanity. Like the first one ends with Luigi getting the mansion for fuck's sake, it's 100% depicting real events. Your idea about the difference between boos and other ghosts being unfinished business is genius, though. Really knocked that one out of the park.
I'm not sure if it's based on anything or if I just made it up, but I was always under the impression that Mario characters ascend and become stars when they die. It's stated that Mario himself is a Star Child meaning he was likely created by the Star Spirits, which links stars directly to the other races. If the Stars can create these lower races, it makes sense that upon death they'd return back to the realm of the stars to begin their afterlife as a Luma. There is also the actual "Star" race, but that's pretty much exclusive to Paper Mario and IMO it's just a stylized storybook depiction of the Lumas which are the actual star people that exist in Mario. Lumas are baby stars, and they can mature into either Power Stars or Warp Stars or in rare cases Star Spirits.
Heaven is shown to exist in the mario universe. At the end of Wario Land 4 cherubs escort princess shakora's soul to heaven. Angels also appear in various Warioware games, such as Warioware smooth moves. Also in various comics and episodes of the super mario bros super show, bibles are shown along with priests usually due to wedding situations.
I never really thought about it like that. Reminds me of that meme where you have to fight everyone you ever killed in a video game to get into heaven.
It could be both going with Japanese interpretations of the afterlife ghosts have an attachment to the material world and cannot move on to the afterlife. Every example of death for mario has been shown to be foreful and unwilling plus he would have unfinished business. We haven't and likely won't see him die at peace with his life and ready to move on.

I got a bit lost at the "paper jam confirms paper mario isn't canon" argument as I feel like it's thrown a wrench in ideas that used to work. the contents of the book mostly contain things found in sticker star, and I don't think it's likely that all the other games would be in the same book or restricted to books at all. of course most characters or locations aren't seen in other games, but the main series is guilty of having several one-off ideas too. that plus the fact that ttyd and spm take place outside of the mushroom kingdom, I believe the first 3 paper mario games can easily fit into the abstract canon of the series. I'm hesitant to include the later 3 paper mario games only because the emphasis on the world being made of paper is so extreme that they would have to be in a separate universe all this malarkey aside this video is very good
It’s pretty interesting how in Japanese made games heaven and hell are seen in a similar light as to mythologies like Greek mythology. You even see in the Sonic games like SA2, where you can raise chao to be a hero or dark type and the chao garden are literally based on Heaven and Hell.
Another interesting thing about Peach and the Fruit, it could also parallel Persephone in a way too, in keeping with the Greek themes (also Apples and Pomegranates were often confused for the Forbidden Fruit in the story of Adam and Eve) On the subject of the Halo, I found a couple of verses in the Bible that reference something similar: "And I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven, clothed with a cloud: and a rainbow was upon his head, and his face was as it were the sun, and his feet as pillars of fire:" Revelation 10:1 and "As the appearance of the bow that is in the cloud in the day of rain, so was the appearance of the brightness round about. Ok so I don't think that boos are the end point of life in Mario for one reason, the backgrounds. In Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2. When you look at the background in haunted themed levels, you can see classic depictions of ghosts spiraling toward a bright light. Now, you could say that it's just for decoration... BUT in Super Mario 3D World, when you use the light box on boos and other ghostly enemies to kill them, you can see briefly the exact same shape glide upwards on the walls. And we know that 3D World and Mario Galaxy happen in the same timeline since you can see Lumas and Electrogoombas in some levels but also that the observatory is in the background on one level and Rosalina is playable. Conclusion: boos are just a step in the life cycle of the Mario universe. The end point being being dissolved by light and joining the center of the cosmos to become pure energy.
I want to point out that hades doesn't have power over death, he isn't even the god of death, the god of death in greek mythology is Thanatos. hades is the god of the underworld, not the god of death
Bit late, but I'm 100% taking this interpretation of boos moving forward. It makes so much sense with how playful they are. they're done with all their unfinished business
If boos are dead people who have accepted death, what does that make King Boo? Was he the first one to die? Or is he like, some “arbiter of death?” Is he the true Mario equivalent of Satan? 🤔 Sidenote, but I’m pretty sure Paper Mario-at least the first one, and probably by extension TTYD too. SPM is questionable. Probably not the later three-are meant to be the same canon as regular Mario, considering the first PM was conceived as a direct sequel to Super Mario RPG, and there’s a lot of commonality in the lore, like the Star Road, which is also in Super Mario World.
Anything that disregards the entire Paper Mario universe as "just a book with creative decisions" (and ESPECIALLY using Paper Jam and its horrenduous writing and even more godawful portrayl of the universe as their supposed evidence) pretty much gets negative points from me, but I will give this theory some points because there is a nonzero probability that the conclusion taken when dismissing PM is still a part of the cycle in that universe, that being that the Underwhere and Overthere are not necessarily where the departed IMMEDIATELY goes, leading to the very real probability of plenty of that universe's souls choosing to stay as part of the world they once roamed; out of either unfinished business or just caring too much for said world to leave (hell, PM itself alludes to that possibility in TTYD with the ghost Toad you meet on the train in room 004).

It could be both going with Japanese interpretations of the afterlife ghosts have an attachment to the material world and cannot move on to the afterlife. Every example of death for mario has been shown to be foreful and unwilling plus he would have unfinished business. We haven't and likely won't see him die at peace with his life and ready to move on.

I got a bit lost at the "paper jam confirms paper mario isn't canon" argument as I feel like it's thrown a wrench in ideas that used to work. the contents of the book mostly contain things found in sticker star, and I don't think it's likely that all the other games would be in the same book or restricted to books at all. of course most characters or locations aren't seen in other games, but the main series is guilty of having several one-off ideas too. that plus the fact that ttyd and spm take place outside of the mushroom kingdom, I believe the first 3 paper mario games can easily fit into the abstract canon of the series. I'm hesitant to include the later 3 paper mario games only because the emphasis on the world being made of paper is so extreme that they would have to be in a separate universe

It’s pretty interesting how in Japanese made games heaven and hell are seen in a similar light as to mythologies like Greek mythology. You even see in the Sonic games like SA2, where you can raise chao to be a hero or dark type and the chao garden are literally based on Heaven and Hell.

Another interesting thing about Peach and the Fruit, it could also parallel Persephone in a way too, in keeping with the Greek themes (also Apples and Pomegranates were often confused for the Forbidden Fruit in the story of Adam and Eve)

Ok so I don't think that boos are the end point of life in Mario for one reason, the backgrounds.
In Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2. When you look at the background in haunted themed levels, you can see classic depictions of ghosts spiraling toward a bright light.
Now, you could say that it's just for decoration... BUT in Super Mario 3D World, when you use the light box on boos and other ghostly enemies to kill them, you can see briefly the exact same shape glide upwards on the walls. And we know that 3D World and Mario Galaxy happen in the same timeline since you can see Lumas and Electrogoombas in some levels but also that the observatory is in the background on one level and Rosalina is playable.
Conclusion: boos are just a step in the life cycle of the Mario universe. The end point being being dissolved by light and joining the center of the cosmos to become pure energy.
There's something about over-analyzing something to a completely insane degree like this. But in all seriousness, great video, very well made.

Sidenote, but I’m pretty sure Paper Mario-at least the first one, and probably by extension TTYD too. SPM is questionable. Probably not the later three-are meant to be the same canon as regular Mario, considering the first PM was conceived as a direct sequel to Super Mario RPG, and there’s a lot of commonality in the lore, like the Star Road, which is also in Super Mario World.

Anything that disregards the entire Paper Mario universe as "just a book with creative decisions" (and ESPECIALLY using Paper Jam and its horrenduous writing and even more godawful portrayl of the universe as their supposed evidence) pretty much gets negative points from me,
but I will give this theory some points because there is a nonzero probability that the conclusion taken when dismissing PM is still a part of the cycle in that universe, that being that the Underwhere and Overthere are not necessarily where the departed IMMEDIATELY goes, leading to the very real probability of plenty of that universe's souls choosing to stay as part of the world they once roamed; out of either unfinished business or just caring too much for said world to leave (hell, PM itself alludes to that possibility in TTYD with the ghost Toad you meet on the train in room 004).
