    Lyrics
    [Intro]
I hate purity. I hate goodness. I don't want virtue to exist anywhere. I want everyone corrupt
    [Verse 1]
    I am an architect
    They call me a butcher
    I am a pioneer
    They call me primitive
    I am purity
    They call me perverted
Holding you but I only miss these things when they leave
    [Pre-Chorus]
I am idiot drug hive, the virgin, the tattered and the torn
Life is for the cold made warm and they are just lizards
Self disgust is self-obsession honey and I do as I please
A morality obedient only to the cleansed repented
    [Chorus]
    I am stronger than Mensa
Miller and Mailer, I spat out Plath and Pinter
I am all the things that you regret
A truth that washes that learnt how to spell
    [Verse 2]
The first time you see yourself
    Naked you cry
    Soft skin now acne
    Foul breath so broken
    He loves me truly
    This mute solitude I'm draining
I know I believe in nothing but it is my nothing
    [Pre-Chorus]
Sleep cannot hide thoughts splitting through my mind
Shadows aren't clean, false mirrors too many people awake
If you stand up like a nail then you will be knocked down
I've been too honest with myself I should have lied like everybody else
    [Chorus]
    I am stronger than Mensa
Miller and Mailer, I spat out Plath and Pinter
I am all the things that you regret
A truth that washes that learnt how to spell, how to spell
    [Guitar Solo]
    [Outro]
So damn easy to cave in, man kills everything
So damn easy to cave in, man kills everything
So damn easy to cave in, man kills everything
So damn easy to cave in, man kills everything

In my opinion The Holy Bible has the greatest lyrics ever. Even if you don't agree with them, you must admit that it's extremely fascinating to see what it was like in Richey's mind. The Holy Bible is my all time favourite album and I can't imagine ever liking another album more. People say it's the most depressing album of all time, it personally makes me happy, except for the thought of how it ended with Richey. For so long I thought I was alone, but then I discovered The Holy Bible by Manic Street Preachers.

Yourself is incredible too. Touches a raw nerve with me a few times.
      Your ritual everyday
A mild shower soak in aftershave
      Best clothes do your best
Look in the mirror go on
      Belittle yourself yourself yourself
      Belittle yourself yourself yourself
      [Chorus]
You go on day after day
      Dreaming on a lie
      That you keep locked inside
      Of yourself
      Yourself
      Yourself
      Of yourself
      Yourself
      Yourself
      [Verse 2]
      Can you sleep tonight
Cast aside for some pouting young pup
      Sink into a slurred veneer
      Alcoholic haze so now
Least you can like yourself yourself
Least you can like yourself yourself
      [Chorus]
You go on day after day
      Reservoirs of guilt
That your fixed grin always hides
      And yourself
      Yourself
      Yourself
      Of yourself
      Yourself
      Yourself
      And yourself
      Yourself
      Yourself
      Of yourself
      Yourself
      Yourself
      [Verse 3]
You look at ads all day
Everyone is perfect and you're so lame
      Free scent burns your skin
But no smell can really cover sin
Too many teenage holes to fill
Too many teenage holes to fill
      [Chorus]
You go on day after day
      Speak to your despised
      Blanking your loved ones
      And yourself
      Yourself
      Yourself
      And yourself
      Yourself

If the stories are true about Holy Bible. Then Richey wrote the majority of the songs while under psychiatric care due to his self harming and alcoholic ways. He was a genius, and one I'm grateful I got to meet as 13 year old. The band themselves were a huge influence on me from the moment I heard New art riot. They challenged me to pick up books so I could understand what they were writing about. They got me interested in politics, history things I'd would never have been taught in school. They are more than just a band, they sent out powerful political messages that inspired the youth of Wales who we're looking to someone to be a voice for them. They were never in the industry for fame or fortune and that's why they've never been elevated to the status that has been afforded the like of Oasis, Coldplay and the likes. They are the one band that have been given the licence to do what they want, how they want because us few die hard followers will always buy they're stuff and sell out they're gigs because we understand where they came from and what they trying to do. But however hard it is for mainstream music industry and media to accept them they can't help but love them. "YOU LOVE US!"

    • @iainrobb2076
      @iainrobb2076 10 років тому +22

They are highly respected in the music media, however. They have been consistently loved since the Richey Edward days by Q. Of course, you could make the point that they ought to sell more albums, but they are among the only bands from the '90s onwards, from Britain, whose new albums always wind up in the top twenty album sales. You could say, "Well, what's your point?" My point is that Manic Street Preachers are actually a highly respected and very commercially succesful band. In the current climate of political correctness processed, antiseptic and derivative pop and rock they shouldn't be. Thankfully, they are.

I have a similar story. They were the first band I went to see, when Motown Junk was the new single, and as a 16 year old managed to befriend Richey. I met up with him at loads of their Scottish gigs for the next couple of years and we always exchanged books, so I've got a nice little stash of books Richey gave me, all with slogans and bits of poetry written inside. Such a great guy, always happy to share his time.

.Missing person....Richey Edwards, 1st Feb 1995, he was an intelligent guy academically, well read, good with words, BUT he couldn't find a way to live, he couldn't find peace of mind. You see, in life, without having peace of mind, and if you are feeling tormented by guilt, shame or just your own thoughts are driving you crazy ...then........... your life will be very hard, and it will lead to massive depression, and is some cases tragedy. Peace of mind is everything.

    • @rohedron
      @rohedron 4 роки тому +1

or perhaps nothing is everything, but many things come close...? i think the trap sometimes is that peace of mind (from the perspective of being aware of the great disaster befalling human life) can resemble capitulation towards that disaster, but it is in fact, as i think you are saying, the necessary step in also learning the way that the disaster needs to be opposed, from an 'internal' position which also then opens the way to 'external' action, thank you for that comment.

I only read 1984 a few weeks ago for the first time. As soon as I read this line in the book I immediately recognised it from the Holy Bible.

    • @RobbieManic
      @RobbieManic 7 років тому

ratty860997 I had the same thing back in 2015 when I began to binge read again! I knew the opening quote to be Sir John Hurt and then I learnt that it was from 1984. Then I watched the clip on UA-cam and heard the quote and then read the book and saw the quote and the Manic Street Preachers fan within me screamed with delight (':

RobbieCBPBarlow Marilyn Manson also references 1984 in Disposable Teens with the lyrics 'A rebel from the waste down'. Which Winston says to Julia. That was the other line in the book that stood out to me and made me think. 'I've heard that line before'.

    • @RobbieManic
      @RobbieManic 7 років тому

ratty860997 I've never been a fan of Marilyn Manson - I don't dislike him just never got into him really, but I do remember that quote now that you mention it! (: one of the best things about music and literature is that they're both easily dispersable between one and another and easily influential to each other too (:
