I currently deliver concrete. That driver did you wrong. He only used two chutes. He can use up to four. No more than four or the chutes will break. With four chutes he could pour the concrete so you don't have to pull it at the garage doors. When he got to half he started pouring the right way. He made more work which is what I never do. Your family did a great job.

Y’all did an amazing job, considering it was only the two of y’all, and with minimal experience. I take my hat off to y’all.
I was kind of scared for y’all when you said, the day before the pour, that you would be pouring at a 5 slump.
But y’all took the bull by the horns and did a great job. You could tell that your boys really wanted to help.
    Congratulations y’all.

You need to buy a large rounded end steel trowel to put on your extension poles after you bull float it to get a smoother finish and remove bull float lines. Some knee boards and a mag float would be better for perfection but also more skilled. So I would avoid until you get better. Bull float/magnesium trowel will open concrete pores to allow bleed water to escape easier. After bleed water evaporates then hit it with large steel trowel 3’ you guys did great for first pour. That slump was kicking your ass too. Try and pour a 6 slump as it’s easier to work with on flat grades. Slump won’t effect concrete strength unless you add water after truck arrives to get higher slump. Then 1 gallon of water per yard will reduce concrete strength by 2-300 psi per yard of concrete. So avoid adding water to truck and instead order right slump to begin with . I like ordering 4500psi and ordering a 5 slump then when truck arrives add more water to achieve desired slump and it ends up being about 4000 psi when water is added.

This man's experience is why I get work in SW Ohio. I target people in his position that are DIYers, but lack the necessary experience in working with concrete directly. I have the experience in pouring/finishing, but I work with DIYers that save costs by doing the ground prep work beforehand until it comes time for forms & the concrete work. It took me a good 50-60 jobs working for others before I had the necessary skills & experience under differing conditions to go out on my own and work with DIYers.
Dan, don't beat yourself up. 7 yards for a beginning rag-tag awesome duo as your wife and you is a HUGE undertaking. If you still aren't satisfied come spring, just do a skim coat resurfacing then and broom it the way you want. Just make sure to wait until the skim coat is ALMOST hard (last 1/16" of workable material), and THEN do the brooming. I suggest you try it on a test slab of 2'x2' before going onto the whole pad again.

good job for first time and just 2 of you, Mason for 22 yrs and still going. You guys did pretty good but after a once over with the bull float, then mag trowel entire surface , miss a spot and it will be slightly off color in that spot, after a once over with the mag then put first edge around and trowel in control joints. Dont waste to much time with the first edging because you will then go over the entire area with the mag trowel again getting the surface fine tuned closer to a finish with each mag troweling. After 2 mag trowelings then do the entire surface with a finish trowel, depending on how smooth it is after the first trowel and depending on how hard it has gotten , you may want a second finish troweling. Then do your broom finish and put your finished edge trowel in and any control joint edging, keeping in mind not to rush the final edging so you dont hit the broom finished areas . But that much concrete for us in 70 deg weather we have to keep moving not wasting any time in between the stages until its all done. Its hard work and you probably have 3 ish hrs start to finish, but sometimes sun, wind , dry ground under the concrete can chop an hour or more off that time. The key is keep moving rapidly as possible through all those steps . But im impressed with just the 2 of you to get to the finished product you did.

My brother and I pour concrete every day and this is a big enough slab to work 2 people hard for sure. Plus my guy did you dirty by pouring a stiff mix with only 12’ of shoots on. All the drivers around here carry at least 20’ or so and that makes for a lot less work. We also use water reducer when we pour this size on flat grade. Check out water reducers or plasticizers for your next pour your back will thank you. Also, get yourself a Fresno trowel too will help you get a better between stage when going from bull float to hand trowels. Cheers and great job dude!

I thought it looked just fine. That was a good call not trying to do the control joints with the joint tool. It can even be a real chore for an experienced guy. Saw cutting is just fine. I work with a really small crew. We only bowl float it once or twice over and when it's ready we do a hand wipe from knee boards. Usually 1 guy troweling and one guy brooming. the guy troweling only far enough to make one pass with the broom and the broom guy keeping up with the troweling guy. Honestly you and your wife did a good job for no experience.

It's not always about saving money either. He also didn’t have a long enough screed, so he laid 2x4’s half way in the center, then pulled them out and left deep divits of which he couldn’t properly reach to fill back in. When brooming the concrete had dried to much so I have a bunch of raised areas that look horrible.
He has refused to even come and look and job again. Should I take him to small claims?

As well as used expansion metal joints in pour 4 sections.
I could go on with advice, I've only pour for the last 25 years.

From what I saw, first off that concrete delivery guy was rubbish, very unprofessional, he started to dump a very stiff slump, then you could see he stopped and added more water to get slump right, he should have checked this on arrival he could also have put 2 more extensions on to get the concrete right up to the garage front for you, I think he saw you were not skilled in working concrete, perhaps you told him, if you did with him that was a mistake, although I have seen many other drivers on UA-cam taking their time to deliver to help newbies, even to the point with of some of them putting on wellies and helping till you get the idea, you were unlucky I'm afraid, all this gut wanted was to dump it as quick as he could and leave, having said that you and your wife got stuck in and with a little help from the boys, sometimes they got in the way, but hey at least they were keen, certainly more help than that driver (sorry I can't get over his attitude) I was very impressed with your wife's work methods and skills, you too also as well, over all quite a good job and a pretty good end result, you know where your faults were so that's good for next time, this was a big area for your first try so give yourselves a pat on the back well done!

Never seen stuff like this before. Have to hand it to your wife and yourself for the great big bovine hangers, not knowing is half the battle, finding out is the other. CAMERON.

That was a HUGE undertaking for your first concrete pour. For how large that pad is you all did a great job. Trust me I’ve seen “experienced” guys deliver inferior work. That driver did you absolutely no favors... he should be ashamed of himself. Try a pad half that size next time, it will allow you the time to hone your finishing skills. Great job!

When the pour started I said to myself, this will be like watching a train wreck.. But it wasnt👍. Congratulations, it could have been a lot worse🙏😂 ... Look forward to seeing you pour one for the neighbors😉😅 they can grill you and the kids some hamburgers.😅... Seriously though, you, your kids, and especially your wife are Champs.

Not bad for a 6 yard pour, just should of hired at least one guy that knew what he was doing..... Close it up with a fresno an let it dry and broom it and be done!!!

Good effort, that job should of had 2 professional concreters .
You should try and find 2 concreters that will Do it for a reasonable day rate ,and u supply materials .
As u would of already outlaid money for tools that will cost u,
And u only get 1 go at concrete. , not like gyprock or any other part of building u can do it again ,
Good on u for having a go,but leave concreting to the pros. Or cut that pour in half to bigger area for learning ,start on pathways.

The driver screwed you. First, you should have started at the garage and never let the pour get way ahead of you. Pour a little than screed it, get the outside perfect, than pour some more.

I did a pour once and I didn’t know you need to check the ticket. Well? It was last the window time and it started setting before I could even finish it . I’m sure the Mexican driver was laughing at my white ass knowing dam well I didn’t know what I was doing

Pull the string line squarely not on angles like that, unless the slab is flat.u can never have to many saw cuts .look at the stupid aji driver ,he could straighten his truck out and go 1meter closer, agi drivers carry on like they carried the Crete there on there backs
