Should be said that darling played most of last year with a broken arm before off season surgery to be there for the team. Granted it’s time he lost his place but he has been a great player for this club including a few good games this year
I'd really love to see Ginbey in a half back flank roll. His run and ball use is good and it would be good for him to gather up some touches and explode out of the backline. I also feel like he can play accountable if needed just to shut someone down like a McCluggage who has been names as a forward flank.
Very much agree with that sentiment. I do think we need to give Trew a full run, he’s been sub way too many times. He needs a run in the guts, yes he’s not quick but he can get his hands on the ball and uses it okay. A run at WAFL level for Chesser is a great idea, a bit more time on the inside getting a bit more ball and a bit more confidence
Good point on Simpson possibly making this decision on Darling anyway. The haters just assumed it was all Schofield. One lesson I’ve learned and everyone will learn is people believe what they want to believe.
Out of the ashes of a poor season I'm hoping that Schofield is a success in the rest of the games, both for the sake of the club, players and fans and also i think Jarrod deserves a crack as AFL coach.
Fantastic episode as usual, will be very interesting to see how this week goes with the changes made. Sheppard's case will be very interesting as all eyes will be on the result across the league. A shame that he had to go down that road but I am sure he will not be the only one

There is nothing wrong playing WAFL. It can help young guys learn about different roles (like Maric on wing / half back) and also build confidnece. Ledwards has played a lot of footy as a youngster. He is on the point of getting dropped if he can't play good footy.

Will be interesting to see. As for those saying that players should wear helmets, there is little evidence that supports their efficacy when it comes to concussion. I would genuinely like to see things settled out of court with the best outcome for Brad Sheppard in mind. I don't think it serves anyone well to have this dragged through the courts, and I would hope both the club and AFL come to an agreement that can provide some financial certainty and security for Brad Sheppard going forward. I think we can acknowledge that we knew far less back then than we do now, and I think this is evidenced by the independent medical panel that makes recommendations for players on the issue of medical retirements. There has also been a clear attitude shift across the competition. My empathy is definitely there for him, the ongoing symptoms of concussion can be chronic, severe and debilitating. I genuinely wish him all the best.
Yeah when Jack was at his best he was running 15 kms a game, working offensively and defensively for the team and kicking reasonable bags and assisting teammates. He hasn't done it, for a good long while now. It's rather he can't or he's lost his drive or something. I could understand it, if like my parents.Him and his missus were working on kid number 6 plus or something. But otherwise he's a team man he'll understand getting dropped also.
I think there is no way known the Eagles don’t ensure Darling gets to 300 with the club. So significant for attracting talent for the future to show we look after players. Dropping him for me signals we will keep him for his last year of contract (can only make 299 if plays every game now), and think it means we will trade Waterman or Allen. St kilda with potentially pick 4 & 5 (Battle comp) or Melb, 1st, future and Tholstrop would be sound for these I reckon. If we move on Barrass to WB for their first, smith comp and busslinger we would potentially add 4 firsts and 2 under 21 players in 2 moves. Surely that would be a win for a developing side.
Brad Sheppard also has a duty of care to himself. Him suing the AFL is like Danny Green suing a boxing federation for getting punched in the head while “on the job”.
I hope they give Trew 3 full games playing inside mid. I think there is enough data that he won’t make it in any other position. Give him a chance to play the role he plays at WAFL. Schofield said in his press conference yesterday that he hasn’t had full control over all of the changes, because Simmo was still involved this week, but in the next few weeks he’ll have more say over this make up of the side. Darling has been pretty much playing injured or hindered for the last couple of years and it’s time he was rested. He’s been a fantastic servant of the club, but we can’t keep carrying people and we need to play the Young guys to see what they can do. I don’t care if we lose games for the rest of the year, we just need to play the kids in their positions and properly evaluate the list before next year.
Sucks for Darling coz he may not get to 300 games now but in this eagles team it makes no sense to play him. For long term you gotta get games into Jack Williams over Darling. Darling could easily slot into another team like saints, dees, or pies. He'd only make it to 300 at the eagles if there is an injury to one of the big forwards at this point

Looking at the sub, I hope trew gets some rotations through the middle and is not sub!!! Jones or brockman should do it. With yeo and Reid resting forward, we don’t need them both in for full game. I’ve always thought jones would be a great sub player, versatile, impact player, speed and can influence the game in a short burst. And not good enough to be in the 22!!

Eagles have used the reserves well this year for selections. Guys have gone back in order to get confidence and learn new roles. Kids can learn a lot from playing WAFL. Playing seniors and just getting some disposals and playing a fixed role on / off the bench doesn't really help development. I'd like to see Trew and Culley finish off the year in seniors. I think the other kids have really had plenty of opportunities. Even JWilliams was a touch lucky to be picked early in the season. But has definitely improved. Maric ideally would have played a bit more down back at WAFL to learn the role.
Darling, along with 2018's other stars like Gaff (who would've been amazing in the Grand Final if he weren't suspended), Cole, Ryan and Sheed hit their primes five years ago during the finals run. Others from that era like Hutchings, LeCras and Kennedy have retired. Even Barrass can't keep up with the early twenties forwards of other teams any more. Everybody's physical peaks decline. The stars of 2018 can't keep with the stars of 2024. Yeo and Cripps have a few more years in them, Ryan needs a few games in the WAFL to straighten his possession and disposal skills a bit more, Barrass probably needs a spell in the WAFL as well.
The opposition 3 tall forward will end up going to Bazzo when he returns. Hedwards should play on power forwards. Interesting that Witherden survived. I'd like to see Hough have a stint in the midfield and build his experience and versatility. Then look at Ginbey and Maric moving back more.
JWilliams got a chance to play at the MCG last week as a sub which was a gesture by Simmo to him and a chance to play on the ruck should a tall tire. His first game at MCG. Its difficult to have Allen and JWilliams in the same forward line. Add BWilliams and its three tall power players. So that's an issue in the future for how the club will deal with JWilliams vs BWilliams, considering Flynn or another ruckman are likely to be the rucks. The Eagles have been stacking their forward line and see how Allen Darling and BWilliams combines. Darling and JWilliams are different type players. I think Simmo also have problems dropping BWilliams considering how hard he has worked as a ruckman in 2 years. He has been a real servant, so how can you drop him to play Flynn and JWilliams instead? Obviously its just one of those difficult decisions for coaches.
Finally. Has been so poor. I love the bloke but if the experienced players aren't bring experience nor quality... what good are they doing? Looking at you crippa
The Eagles do definitely need run and speed off half back. They've messed around with Jones this year, despite his best position clearly being half back. He needs a final chance to deliver at half back. Hunt can go half back too, but we clearly need someone to step up on the wing, and we do need to trial small defenders and not just keep picking the same guys across the backline.
hutchy may be 23 but he is just starting off and still fumbling a lot. He really needs a full elite preseason. Still he is building game time which will put him in good stead. But lucky to still be playing.
His defensive pressure helped limit the loss to only 10 goals. Tackled like a beast and with so many talls, it can’t be left to Cripps. He’s in for defensive integrity mainly, actually touching the footy is less important.
@@deanbeissel2807 Darling is totally different to JWilliam BWilliams. You can't just have Allen and 2 Williams boys in same forward line. I think they need to consider possibly moving a defender forward or a young mid whose job could be a more defensive role.

Good decision, I don’t know about luke Edwards and Trew. I don’t think they can preform at AFL level but if it helps chesser develop let it be.

Darling in the WAFL still only kicked 2 goals, HE NEEDS TO DO MORE.

With Ledwards they need to contemplate different roles whether its a shut down defender or defensive forward/tagger. They need to see what he offiers.
