Wow, had no idea about the backstory regarding design of this Catholic school. St. Pius X Catholic School was located in Rosedale, NY about 2 miles from the nearest runway at JFK. I lived two blocks from this school in the 1970s. Fortunately, this school was not in the flight path of arriving aircraft however, the school was directly under the path of departing flights (typically flights departing mornings and early afternoons daily). The perceived decibels during these takeoffs were extremely loud back in those days ( especially the departing B707, B727, VC10, DC8, DC9 and Concord SST aircraft). I clearly remember hearing about numerous windows breaking at nearby residences around Rosedale. As a kid, I was awestruck. I absolutely loved the sound of those screaming jet engines during takeoffs. My neighbors, not so much. Lol.

Having been raised in a United Air Lines family (Back in the Jet age/Tulip logo days.) I miss the real jets...I live 5 miles southwest of KCLE directly under one of the departure lanes of 24L, the best real jet noise I can hope for is the daily MD80 departure...

That opening scene with the dump trucks. All I can think of is Die Hard with a Vengeance, when Simon has the stolen dump trucks at the explosion site.

@@JeffGR4 That's what I call real flying, the noisier the dirtier the better. I used to love watching the 707s and DC8s depart JFK with the black smoke trailing behind. My father was a captain for Pan American from 1955-1989, and as a kid I used to love the noise on takeoff aboard the 707, to places like Rome, Paris, London, Madrid, Frankfurt. Those were the days.

In 1971-4 I lived at a three floor garden apartment a few miles from JFK airport. If a particular runway was used for take offs to the northeast heavy 707s taking off with a full fuel load could not reach much altitude by the time they flew over my building, The sudden impact of the noise was very disturbing. I wrote the President of Air France "How can you operate the Concorde which may be even louder when your present 707s make such great noise when on takeoff overhead?"

What a great question you asked. Most people wouldn't have figured it out ahead of time like you did. By the time 1971-1974 occurred, huge numbers of slightly less noisy JT3D, low bypass turbofans had replaced the earlier 707's JT3C and JT4 straight turbojets. The Concorde's turbojets were also equipped with afterburners! Those Rolls Royce Olympus engines made them as loud at takeoff as a B-1 bomber. Earth shaking and deafening. You knew your stuff and I commend you.

Yes, the company I work for, we use weed wacker and leaf blower daily in the summer, we measured the dB levels, it's a little over 100 dB but we wear ear protection and safety glasses, but yes lawn care equipment, the jt3c of the lawn care stuff lol even when we are working 1000 feet away from each other, you can still hear the drone of those 2 stroke engines, bouncing off the hillsides in the distance 😁

Here is an interesting question. Why does the FAA ONLY concern themselves with noise polution and not visual pollution? Why do we have quieter jets and yet they make much more noticeable contrails that look ugly? What about us nature lovers that love to see a beautifull sky. Don't we count?
