What a wonderful video displaying this unique structure of Pan American Airlines, I actually worked there many years ago. Thanks for bringing back so many positive memories.
This is a beautiful portrayal of culture and life's slower pace that existed in the 1960's. I see this film was actually made in 1961. What a beautiful terminal. I love how men used to dress like that with the long black coats. My grandfather wore one of those.
Absolutely brilliant. Finally a high-quality color film showing the original Pan Am UTB interior. Been looking for something like this for a long time.
There was no "JFK Airport" until after John F Kennedy was assassinated in 1963. When this film was made it was Idlewild Airport. Also the copyright date shown in the closing credits is 1961, not 1960 or 1959.
I recall the Worldport fondly as it's where I first flew abroad from. I don't think all these complaints are appropriate. We're blessed with jet travel - it's a miracle really. Enjoy the wonder of it! I have since 1976 on my first DC-10 flight to Orlando.
Well, that was totally bizarre. Not sure where to begin: dropping off your baby with a stranger, two men a woman and a baby and a child wandering off alone....
It was 1960. A very different time. Tho it was five years before I came into existence, the world was a VERY different place back then. I used to wander around the airport in my town (Detroit) by myself back when I was 5 years old in 1970.
Unfortunately, time took that building... there was mold from leaks everywhere (it used to rain in the basement.. yes rain... in the basement... ) and a lot of asbestos... Toward the end no one wanted to work there because they used to get bad chest colds... Besides, construction from TSA requirements and modernization, took the buildings charm away... IMO, the building was too far gone to be rescued
I remember the Prides Crossing,Ma. crash in Aug.11,1981 now that was a train accident !!! I was railfanning Castle Hill yard in Salem that day and heard of the crash and drove right up,it was about 8mi. What a mess and 3 deaths !! also GP-9 #1731 was total loss.
bruce hain That is so spot-on. It’s like a part of a foreign film that just happened to not need subtitles, and balloons were mandatory in 1961, right? I’m sure Renault gladly provided one. ;)
At one point Pan Am was has the worst flight safety record requiring the FAA almost grounding the entire fleet and having new CRM put put in place and huge procedure changes implemented. By 1974 and up they did have a great saftey record.
Yes, forgetting the baby before she boarded the plane is one of the most bizarre scenes I've seen in ANY movie. It's a disturbing documentary, like a Twilight Zone episode.
Corny...I find the whole "you shall be pampered" attitude distasteful. Let them spend less $ on the appearance of pampering the passengers and more on maintenance...and how about a whole-plane parachute? Thousands of deaths could have been prevented.
Pan Am and this iconic terminal were the 'Gold Standard" of air travel. Both are sorely missed.
So full of beautiful mid century goodness. America at her peak
I hate that the world port was demolished. Such an important part of our history

travbuddy144 not 1959?
Yes even as a child I dressed in my best to honor the privilege of flight. I did not mind it. I understood how special the occasion was

What a beautiful vision of the past!
I can smell the vintage scent in this video... bringing back memories. And the noises from all the equipments.
When flying was fun and elegant!
The good ole' pre 9-11 days, when you could see a loved one off at the gate.
And be able to stay with them right up until they boarded the plane.
In retrospect, it's a good thing they did that, or the terminals would be overrun by h0m€less now.
Good memories of the pan am worldport....
Ah, the good old days. Great music score by George Kleinsinger, who is best known for his famous concert work, "Tubby the Tuba".
I loved the look on the mother's face toward the child after letting go the balloon.
Magical! I still remember boarding a DC-8 for a flight to London. Then, again, I was but a wee lad.
Impressive terminal, very efficient at handling the 20 or 30 passengers that were there!
Yeap the terminal looked very small, it probably could handle 10 planes at once tops

Great vid. Not to be picky but in 1960 it was Idlewild...
Those were the days...PANAM glory...
It's a shame that the worldport i demolished, it was such a great icon of airtravel
Wow!! Arriving to that new facility in a Dauphine! Super cool!!
Indeed. Quite strange to see an European car in the USA.
@@Botafogoplayground Not that uncommon in the Boston-New York-Washington corridor.
@@tomservo56954 Thank you for the info ;-)
Wow, people back then really dress nicely to travel!

Miss PanAm
I like that walkway I wish there is still walkways like that
Loss of the world port is a tragedy
Nice Pan Am film made in 1961. Those were the days...
I miss the good old days when we had entire airports that would be staffed to cater to five passengers
No TSA. Oh, the good old times!
Interesting to see that (Aerolineas Argentinas) Comet 4C basking in the evening glow, with the Worldport in the background (at 12:40).
Well, that was totally bizarre. Not sure where to begin: dropping off your baby with a stranger, two men a woman and a baby and a child wandering off alone....

And the first part is that she dropped off the baby to a nursery
And an apparently lifeless baby... so guessing it was no great risk.
Magnifico video!!!!
Too bad that Delta tore down the Worldport, in their continuing efforts to obliterate all traces of Pam Am since they acquired PA's assets.
Scott Mathews I’ve never forgiven them for tearing the Worldport down.
All about the money
Anyone know where the name Idlewild came from?

It's a shame indeed. Would have loved to tour the old PA terminal.
Sadly, time and industry events were not kind to the Pan Am UTB. The beginning of the end came with the 747.
No Starbucks and BurgerKing back in the day.
There has never been, nor will there ever be a terminal I'll be as fond of as the Pan Am Terminal at JFK. Sadly Terminal 3 was demolished in 2014.
Great video and atmosphere. Could be great to know soundtracks.
I remember there was a Burger King upstairs in the mezzanine that I would always get my meal to take on my plane to Spain
It was so beautiful, that terminal. Why did they destroy it?
Apparently, it could only accommodate five people.
I just knew the balloon was going away, and that little Janie was going down the luggage chute! Should have just let her go.
in 1960 PANAM flew around the world from New York..
Music by George Kleinsinger (remember "Tubby the Tuba"?)
Hi Peri... I know you know better.. but come on.. JFK airport? You know it was called Idlewild airport back then..
Some allusion to movie styles of the day I think, like a Fellini flick - a term I used to hear back in the day.
bruce hain That is so spot-on. It’s like a part of a foreign film that just happened to not need subtitles, and balloons were mandatory in 1961, right? I’m sure Renault gladly provided one. ;)
LOLZ just hand your newborn over to some stranger at the airport nursery! Go get a drink, Mom - you deserve it!
Michele Hood Because people way back then are nice not like people like now
People didn't spend their lives being entertained by thoughts of constant danger - it was a much less egotistical time!
Unbenounced to the mother, the baby was implanted with a tracking chip.
Wasn't known as "Worldport" until the early 70's. Pretty funny.
When I flew back in the 60's I just remember going to the Pan American terminal.
What the make and model of the car the family drives in to Pan Am's Worldport?
Renault Dauphine
Acid fuelled commercial. Yay for the 60s.
That lady at the desk is so beautiful at4:39 very cute
Don't forget the cavity search.

Man, what universe was this taken from?? Today, it's a total squalid zoo full of entitled poorly dressed obnoxious throngs
There was NO JFK Airport in 1960!
complete with wi-fi hook up and USB ports in the chairs
the car was a Renault I belive.
Renault Dauphine , My next door neighbor had one back in the day same color
"Honey, did little Janie have her meds today?"
If she forgot about the baby, does it go up for adoption?
They’re auctioned off with the unclaimed luggage.
Yes, forgetting the baby before she boarded the plane is one of the most bizarre scenes I've seen in ANY movie. It's a disturbing documentary, like a Twilight Zone episode.
Yelow balon. It,is You?😨

@@bernardboka4277 A parachute large enough to bring a plane down for a soft landing would fill the fuselage.
