  • In this gripping episode of “Behind the Walls” ex-prison officer Sam Samworth unravels the haunting tale of Michael Sharp, the son of infamous boxer Paul Sykes.
Michael Sharp, once a child of promise found himself ensnared in a web of crime, Sharp is serving a life sentence for the brutal murder of a car dealer in Wakefield. His attack on the victim, David Ward involved torture with a hammer, screwdriver and knuckleduster in an attempt to extract information about a safe containing what he believed was £20,000. The sustained assault led to Ward’s death from his injuries.
Sharp’s violent behaviour and dominance have left a lasting impact on those who share the prison space with him, n this raw and unfiltered episode Sam delves into Michael Sharp and his time at Strangeways prison, he has been described as a bully within the prison walls, his reputation is one of intimidation and fear, ruling over fellow inmates with an iron fist.
Tune in to “Behind the Walls” as we navigate the murky depths of Michael Sharp’s existence, a life shaped by his father’s shadow cast across his name.

I mean, he's fought off multiple attackers (up to 16) on several occasions and was trying to get back to general population from the infirmary after having scalding hot sugar chucked on his body by four guys so can hardly say he's cowardly. He may be a bully but he certainly can handle himself lol

My stepdad would beat me and my brother when we were kids. Then when my Mum come home he would act all nice to her like nothing happened. He would make our lives hell. I just turned 15 and hit him back he started screaming and shouting to the neighbours to call the police. When I was little he could throw his weight around but as soon I was big enough to fight back he was a wimp . I hate bullies with a passion because of him, some days i was terrified to go home i would go to a friends house or just walk around on my own sometimes. As I've gotten older I've realised all bullies are the same they're the biggest wimps going.

When I was about thirteen I went on holiday to Hornsea, there were some wooden ex military sheds that kids could go to for a two week holiday for free. There was about 12 pairs of beds all in a line with a private room at the end for a teacher.
So we were all allocated a bed each, much to my terror I was between Paul Sykes and fat Suggs the school bully, we hadn't unpacked and fat Suggs started on me, I thought I was in for the most miserable two weeks of my life, Paul Sykes said Suggs leave him alone we are all here on holiday, Paul said to me if Suggs bothers you tell me and I will flatten him.
So Paul Sykes save my life!

@@brettsmith6144 Completely agree Brett. The entire prison system needs overhauling and altered with intelligence to actually serve a purpose instead of what it currently is and has been for the last century which is a university and finishing school for criminals and wannabe criminals where they are forced into a life structure, fed and watered, given the facilities as you rightly point out where they can develop themselves physically, learn extensively about crime and make endless connections and acquaintances to utilise in the future and are also able at the cost of the taxpayers to gain education and a degree in whatever they fancy as well as social and personal facilities such as pool tables, table tennis, cells with television and satellite tv, internet and connection to the outside world, games consoles and God knows whatever else.
The entire system is fundamentally flawed and needs to be in my humble opinion split up and separated into various sections whereby prisoners go through a kind of vetting process where they have the opportunity to be monitored and interviewed by experts who can then deem them capable/desiring of rehabilitation and if they toe the line and do the things necessary then they should be taken to a separate prison for people who are to be offered complete rehabilitation and education whereas the ones who do not and I’m talking about the very worst here who are a danger to society and show no remorse and zero interest or willingness to change should be housed in a maximum security prison where they do hard labour to pay for their upkeep and to give the genuinely remorseful people who want or can change a real opportunity at changing their lives and rehabilitation.
This is just my thoughts on the subject as I have known a lot of young guys who have gone in for relatively small infractions and due to the intimidation and survival first mentality have ended up coming out as hardened criminals or certainly with the tools and intent to become one because that’s all they know and not all children have the same chances in life or are lucky enough to be taught right from wrong and I believe we owe it to them to give them a second chance and lumping them in with life long hardened criminals is completely irresponsible and ineffective and also it is an insult to the public tax payer who is also owed a better representation of how society would like to help them.
It’s as simple as this, if a doctor tells a heavy smoker
that you have cancer in a certain part of your body, the aim is to eradicate it by cutting out the infected areas and tissue and use of other therapies such as drugs or radiation to keep any regrowth or cancerous cells from coming back or spreading.
What you don’t do is leave the cancerous area there and allow it to spread and infect the good tissue and not bother with radiation or drugs and continue to smoke/ drink and allow it to develop to where it eventually is everywhere and in everything and you suffer tremendously until you then die.
This current system is just insanity and a disgrace to our society.

It was when he was on the beer that problems happened. he was barred from practically everywhere in Wakefield and back then the bouncers used to be able to handle themselves. Many pubs used to be owned by Rugby League players in 70's and 80's and they didn't tolerate him. But where he could get in he was a menace when pissed.
Also both his sons are doing life, not only Sharpy, but Paul junior. One murdered a former copper in a house robbery gone wrong and Paul jnr, stabbed someone in Lupset on Broadway.
If you were brought up around that area at the time, everyone had a Paul Sykes story, mine is this. My dad was his age and was big lad himself and played Rugby League for a few Pro sides, he and his mates had a few run in's with Sykes after training or a night out, he'd never let them down if they were qafater a ruck.
One of which was when he was out with my mum in a Chinese in Wakefield called Jumbo's and was talking to this guy called Paul Burke, well known hard man back then, but went on to start up Jiffy Jonny's if you remember them, competition to Durex and Durex bought him out for Millions, went from being a dodgy bastard to proper businessman, anyway Paul Sykes comes in all tanked up, came over to their table and was acting the twat with him, my dad and his misses. so Burkey got up, after a bit of back & forth he launched him straight on his chin & put him down, then grabbed him off the floor, and put his head through the big fish tank that they used to keep these big goldfish in back then, that ended up all over the floor. Then they grabbed him by his legs and threw him down the staircases that was above the shops near the Cathedral on the first floor. He was a thoroughly unpleasant man, ask his former wife kath, he was not right in the head at the best of times but especially when he had a beer inside of him and used to want fight every bloke that looked at him

I once met him in redbeck cafe, his dad Paul Sykes, in 90s he got me to drink some coke , had whizz in it I was with my mates so I was ok , but he spiked me , we was in a old vauxhall Nova SR , I started seeing things in car park like tumbleweed an horses and carts , must have been good stuff but I was already off my head, so I don’t know what he gave me

Both Roy Shaw and lenny mcclean had abusive fathers who beat the shit out of them when young kids of about 10yrs old which seems just coincidence but I think it's childhood trauma like you said as it was definitely part of what made both of them capable of extreme violence.
