I kinda wish TF2 had the feature CS has where you can label areas with callouts, would be wonderful (and horrible) to see what names mappers come up with.
Quick comrades, leave behind your comments to boost this video into the algorithm! We must support Dynam so he can acquire as much villainy funds as possible.
At 2:15 I've heard people call that window "JFK" or "sniper spot" instead of window. That might've just been the people I played it with (which was like a couple times back in like 2012) but yeah.
It is actually very interesting how many callouts tf2 shares with cs. I guess there's a large enough player crossover that people wanted to use callouts they were already familiar with saying instead of making new ones. Some of the more random ones in this video, like "africa," are callouts in cs.
Seems it was I who was blessed by the algorithm and UA-cam remembered I enjoyed your first callouts video and decided to also recomend me this one. Great job !
When I think about strange callouts, I just think of that one old ArraySeven clip where, on badlands(?), he said "the roamer is going taco", and his whole team was wondering what the hell he was talking about, before he explained that the area below the middle bridge was shaped like a taco. Also probably has zero competitive viability, but if you don't call that one spot on Sawmill "super secret", I'm happy to inform you that you don't exist. I mean come on, you all know the spot. Jerma knows the spot! And he invented TF2!
The window on 3rd in highlander it used to be the best spot for sniper on the map. You used to be able to block spy with dispenser and put a level 3 up wrangled that you just cannot kill blocking any dmg on the sniper.
Underneath sunshine mid is called submarine by some. And two things called the same thing on a symmetrical map isn't actually as confusing as you might think. If someone omits 'our' or 'their' when describing something like saw on snakewater, it's generally because you are either still on your side of the map and 'their' saw for example is completely irrelevant, or because you are well over on their side of the map, at which point your own saw is completely irrelevant. The only time it can be important to distinguish is when you are on mid, between the two callouts of the same name. And even in that case if you use the call out, it's assumed you're talking about the obvious call out within the context like 'enemy combo coming [their] saw' or 'we're retreating [our] saw'. And if it was NOT the obvious call out, you would probably use helper words and context like 'scout flanking our saw'. Flanking implies behind or beside and you would also use the word 'our' to specify. Finally there is the rare situation when someone flanks all the way past the close symmetrical map call out and is all the way at the far one. Like if you were on snakewater second pushing last and a soldier gets really really deep behind you. Someone might call 'solly is OUR saw' at which point you all go 'wtf is he doing' and push last. Having written all that out and realizing it took an entire paragraph to explain, I will admit maybe it's not as straightforward as I thought.
The spot under second on snake water is (to my understanding) called Africa because that spot used to be the darkest spot on the map. It had no lights so it was pitch black.
So 1:52 coalplant is actually a variant of a map called Ashville which is played all the time in NA, and in that version there is a proper secret area. I played tons of NA HL. 4:46 you call "red shutter" or "blue shutter."
I mostly don’t understand a thing about competitive anything, let alone TF2, but I really like your energy and style of editing, so I’ll be coming back for more vids. What I want to bring attention to are how you use players in the background to subtly or directly emphasize what you’re saying. Or just make jokes in the background, which I find hilarious. I appreciate additional work that has to go in these and will be paying attention to them in the future vids. Happy getting algorithmed and shit. Cheers.
i feel like callouts would make more sense if the map was themed around an area rather than being a random amalgamation of geometry and props. good example of this is cafe in sunshine, it has a nice ring to it
I really like how CSGO has a bunch of callouts named after pro players, and then alongside that the cool sprays that valve add to maps to represent hype moments in tournaments.
Great video! The quality has really improved with you doing it scripted, I'll be waiting for more uploads. P.S. I 100% thought that calling Saw in Sawmill was a joke on purpose
Me and several others have called that one "window" spot in Badwater "Perch" because it's considered a Sniper's Perch. And that one stupid Secret spot is usually "Cloak Spot"
the final point badwater window is called Nest (because it's high up) or Window (it is a window). Nest is usually the call from what I remember also yea the elbow/banana thing on gully is infuriating. You usually only find out what a person calls it when a flanker is about to kill your med. gl figuring it out in time b4nny has a callout of sorts! the corridor on reckoner that was added to lobby is now often referred to as Rollout. but at the start a lot of people called it b4nny. Because it was added after his feedback. idk how common it still is to call it b4nny though
Yeah I barely played TF2 competitive and knew it was called nest. Don't know how this guy didn't know that one but knows some pretty obscure callouts lmao.
I remember having map reviews with my teams every week when I was in lower divs, we’d usually just make up callouts if we didn’t know what they were. I’m pretty sure borneo and swiftwater both had like 5 or 6 instances of “house” when we did that lol
When I found your previous vid on TF2 callouts, I loved it and was sad to see not much else on your channel! Very excited for more from you, funny stuff and neat facts about a community I never paid much attention to.
I am so glad that sideshow one of my favorite streamers has caused you pain in the future by just spouting nonsense. I loved the video and I can't wait to see more.
In badwater last point, i call it Sniper nest cuz its popular spot for sniper and demoman. Imagine a map has akira platform elevator reference like in tf2.
I love gamer shorthand because it’s inevitably invented when your brain cells are occupied with staying alive so the best you can come up with is “DOOR!”
That might be the origin for some of these, but generally the idea for ‘call-outs’ is that it’s something that can accommodate communicating something as fast as possible; like if you just noticed a sniper is about to headshot your medic, you want to warn your team ASAP where the sniper is with as few syllables as possible. The more syllables it takes, the more time it takes to send the verbal message, the more time the sniper has to ruin your team’s defensive options and lose you the game. Clarity is also vital, so call-outs usually ought to be something that makes sense immediately. You want the team to know what it means without even thinking, they should reach 100% understanding of the warning instantly. If they have no idea where you’re talking about, the call-out may end up doing more harm than good for your team. Window is a great call-out if there’s a limited number of windows that could reference, or if there’s consensus which window is ‘Window.’ It’s self-evident what it means, and just 2 syllables. Banana meanwhile is 3 syllables, so it takes slightly longer to say, and really doesn’t explain itself, so I’d say it’s a sub-par call-out. But even a sub-par call-out can be fine eventually. If it’s used consistently then the community will memorize it, so it’s not too bad, but it’s still worse than something self-evident like window.
At least, they aren't ArraySeven's callouts. I hear he has quite a few funny ones. An example: There's a corner overlooking the lower entrance to Snakwater's last point. He apparently calls this 'Hobo Corner'.
badwater window could be called "triple" because three windows still have their glass. Or "plank" because theres a plank under it. Or "dark" because.. you know, it is dark.
I have never played comp, nor will my glaring lack of self-preservation instincts allow me to play comp, yet I always call the window on badwater last "pinhole", and surprisingly many casual players do eventually understand what I'm referring to. Snipers don't last long after I type "sniper in pinhole" in the team chat. It describes the location perfectly and only has 2 syllables.
In Brazilian Highlander on third point of Upward, some people instead of calling the place with an ammo box "Platform" they call it "Auschwitz" That's because there's an inside joke that a Heavy player named Kaponei is Jewish (Because a league named Vanilla Fortress that he was an Admin for has a logo that kind of looks like the Star of David) and Plataform is good for heavies to play in

I kinda wish TF2 had the feature CS has where you can label areas with callouts, would be wonderful (and horrible) to see what names mappers come up with.

The shutters on coalplant should be called Rutter for red side and Butter for blue side
They should be called monday and tuesday
