I just installed the 777's on a vstar 950 - holy shit ! What a huge improvement over the stock Dunlaps ! Ride quality / cornering & absorption of bumps ( michigan we have terrible roads ) - highly recommend the 777. Been riding road bikes since the mid 80's had several different tires over the years. Speaking from experience.
Thanks for actually mentioning the Shinko tires, even if briefly. The 777 sticks like glue and is available in black and white wall, standard and HD (heavy duty, extra plies), and even some sizes in a REFLECTIVE sidewall now!
One of the few I found that will have sizes I can pair up on my VTX 1800 and my wife's VT 1100, every other season, and not break the bank. So they wear a bit faster. That just means they grip better, which is safer.
@@Wheel-1 Maybe I should have said quality over price. My point wasn't just buy the most expensive. An accident due to a cheap/crap tire is more expensive in the long run was my point.
I can handle lower mileage tires, what I always need most is the safety of sure grip in unexpected rain, gravel scatter, leaves, and traffic "paint" that is actually melted plastic. If that's the ME888, then I'm thankful for the tip. I'd rather replace shoes more often than replace my bike from a lay down.
ME888 give worse grip than ME880 and the Commander II. If you want sticky, try an Avon Cobra, 777 Heavy Duty version, etc. Commander II is the best overall and still has good grip.

777s are a great option in that case. I run them on my VTX 1800, and more importantly, on my WIFE'S VT 1100. And I value her far more than the bikes, including ones passed down through the family, that we own. Three of which were mom's, and she passed in 2003, so they can't be replaced.
Wish I would have found this video before I ordered Metzeler tires for my Cruiser. I waited 4 months for a front tire and it never came in, I have an oddball front tire thanks Honda, so in frustration of that I ordered Commander2 got both tires in 48 hrs. I would have went straight to Michelin had I seen this video and been riding instead of waiting on tires. Good info. Thanks for the video.
I'm running commander 2's on a 04 wideglide. I ride semi aggressive and get good miles out of these, this is 2nd set. These tires are great in dry weather, but doesn't make me feel confident in rain. I ride all year, all temps all weather, except snow. I'm looking for a better wet road tire. Good video.
Been running shinko 777s on my 16 RG which is a built darkhorse. The 777 is imo the Avon of the 90s but cheaper. It grips like a dragon but cost like a Kendra lol. I've got almost 70k on my bike and over 50k has been on shinkos.
I been using Dunlap on my Harley's since 92. Now I am retired and money is short so I bought a set of Shinko tires for my 98 FLSTF. I wasn't worried until I took them to Harley to be mounted and they came just d short of refusing to do it. Now I am worried. I have a set of Shinko tires in my shop for my 72 FLH I may wait to see how these do on my 98 before mounting them on the 72. i don't ride far or fast these days and my wife don't ride with me anymore. I use to do my own mounting but i am getting too old to roll around on the floor with tires these days.

I've been running pirelli not dragons and they have done well. I have to say the metzler's must be the slickest tire I've ever run especially with a drive shaft, they will spin out from under you the compound so hard. Metzler's May last a while but they won't stick to nothing.
My V-Rod came with Night Dragons although I'm due to put Michelin Commanders on because I ride long distance, you will definitely love the grip they have to offer... The mileage however sucks really bad.
For my riding style Pirelli Night Dragon is probably the best. Optimal grip and handling. I predict 15-20,000 kms from the front, about half of that from the rear. This will vary how often you check pressures (36Psi front, 40Psi rear), how hard you ride and road surface. Talked to some people who's got a lot more distance of the tyres, but they ride in a very laid back way. Give it a go!

What's a good choice of tire for a iron 883? I'm a new rider and I'm super paranoid about lack of grip that would cause me to wreck. I'm not gonna be riding like crazy just cruising. Also the roads were I live are not the best paved road, lots of potholes, cracks etc.. any advice would greatly be appreciated.
i have an 883 and i thrash it pretty hard, even in the corners. ive never had any issues with the stock dunlops so probably any name brand tire of equal or greater value will be fine
Here Is A Sportster Tip .... when your out on the road, wondering if your tires need to be changed; reach in your pocket, and grab a quarter, ( or get a quarter, or borrow a quarter ) then, you insert the edge of the quarter into the tread where it is low ... line up the two Ls, in "quarter doLLar" if you can see the bottoms of the Ls, it is time to change your tire.
That was a sad excuse of a mention on the 777. The Shinko 777 is my favorite tire. I'm riding the piss out of a set on my FXR. They are comfortable, sticky and wear well. I ride on them like an absolute fool and they never let me down.
I just put a set of Bridgestone tires on my 2000 Yamaha Road Star. Haven't put many miles on yet but it doesn't feel like I'm "one with the road". The installer put 36 psi in the front and 40 in the rear. I'm going to reduce those a little and see how it feels.

I have a victory hammer. It comes with e4s. I changed the back to a cruisetec which is so much better. Should I change the front to a cruisetec or mix match and put a dragon on it to give more grip and same mileage replacement?
Commander 2's lasted me 18,000 miles in 2yrs definitely worth getting. I'm due for a new back tire but the front one is still like new. I have a 01 Harley Softail.

Just got my 3rd set of Michelin scorchers 😎Stock tires with great grip on rainy days I avg about 20k miles per set.Def feel all the bumps but ill take that any day with a tire that gives me about 20k miles
You are the only one in the world that thinks Scorchers are good... perhaps you should try the second gear and ride faster than 5mph to realize they sux.
Shinkos are on all my Harley's and I'm far far from broke ...just because you wanna save some money while buying a tire that outlast the name brands doesn't mean you are a bum DAMN...
had the Avon Cobras stock on my Triumph Bonneville Speedmaster. they wore down and started losing the grip around the 25k kilometer mark. I had the Avon Cobra Chromes slapped on. I've had them for 3 days now and they are just as good as the stock Cobras and sticker along the sides. just my 2 cents worth!
I had a set on my VTX 1800, when dad passed it down to me. Grip was great for about 6,000 miles, then it got to the harder compound. Swapped over to the Shinkos, at that point, but Inha e the Cobra Chromes on.my Wife's PC 800. Great grip at the 3,000 mile mark, and it rides nice on them. Will update at 8,000.
Amongst Metzeller ME888 Marathon and Bridgestone H50 Battlecruise. what would you recommend for a fully loaded roadking (Tourpak, failing lowers, etc). Focus is more on grip with reasonable mileage. Unfortunately, Commander 2 is not an option for my geography (India) else it would have been a no brainer.
I was curious about night dragons unfortunately they don't come in the sizes I need. I own a Honda Shadow 750c, 120/90 17 (front) and 160/80 15 (rear). Currently I have a Bridgestone Exedra Max as my rear tires but find it a bit slippery, specially in road paints. What would be your suggestions for a good grip tire? Thanks
@2 WheelsForever Which you want, if you are a.more aggressive rider. That west means it has the most grip it can have, which helps to keep you from laying it down, if you are hooning. If you ride more sedatetly, a tire with longer wear life, is a better option.

I went with the Commander IIs on my Low Rider S based on input from #TeamZilla on your blog, they are a good improvement over the stock Scorcher tires the bike came with, but... Us lunatics on hot rodded Dyna's need Night Dragon performance on a Commander II mileage capable tire, hopefully the tire manufactures are listening.
I'm sure they are, but right now, we as riders have a choice. More longevity, with less grip, more grip but faster.wear, or something in the middle. Until tiee compounds improve further, that's where we.are stuck. And I'd much rather repllace.a tire every.7,000.miles, than have.to replace a bike, at 5,000 miles, due to wrecking, because I wanted to not have to replace that tire, a little sooner.
The Iron 883 uses a 100/90-19 front and 150/80B16 rear tire. I believe the Iron is coming with Michelin Scorchers as stock, and those are actually pretty good. Some of the tires in this video would work for you as well. For even more grip (but with shorter tire life), consider the Pirelli Night Dragons. Lemmy. Thanks for the video. I have a 2003 Honda VTX 1800. I had Metzelers on there but did ride much in the last 8 years. Less than 1,000 miles on the set of tires. They dry rotted. Tires available in Sri Lanka are different than the tires available here in the United States, so we cannot provide an accurate recommendation. Try to find a quality tire from a major manufacturer like Pirelli, Metzeler, Michelin, or Bridgestone. Even IRC and Kenda would be acceptable brands. -DrewZilla
Hey ! love the vids for tips and help.. question for ya.. i got a 2009 C50 Boulevard, i tried the standard Rear Dunlop that came with it.. good tire for sticking and cornering, and rode well for wet weather, but didn't like the wear life it gave me.. burned through it fast i thought 1 season &k kms!.. my question is" how is the Micheline Commander 2 for wet driving and handling, and sticking to pavement, for my C50. I just put a new front Dunlop last season does it really matter that my front wont be same brand?" Will get the same front brand when i need to change it. thanks for any help ya can give me. I have a Triumph America and getting confusing info from Bike Shops. What do you think would be my best tyre not worring about cost. Just want something that sticks to the road well that gives a smooth ride and won't flat spot in the middle to quickly with reasonable mileage capability. size tyres I have on now are front 110/80-18 16B and Rear 170/80-B15 77H . Due to the wide 240mm rear tire and specific 21 inch front, there are only a few options. The Michelin Scorcher 11 Tires have good grip and decent tire life. The Bridgestone H50 are more balanced between grip and tire life. Damn you getting paid good for this one dunlop's are good for going to walmart or the mailbox but for longevity or training they dont last hell the shinko 777 out lasted the dunflops and were bought and installed at the same time.
Michelin Commanders have been the best tires ive ever owned. Metzler #2. my 2 cents worth is based on having bought Conti's, Perelli, Dunlop (just terrible), Metzlers and MCs.

A review of the same tires basically that have been out there for years is of little current value. There are lots of new tires available. How do they stack up? Not everybody wants to put a 250 dollar tire on when there are options at 2/3's the price. Are they any good?
Fitted Metzeler ME888 Ultra 180 Rear 4000 miles ago & the 150 Front 2500 miles ago for my F6CT and I am disgusted with both of them. German made tyres! The bike has had the forks serviced and new 440 Progressive shock fitted 18,000 miles ago. The rear tyre has high feathering and cupping and the front has feathering and cupping already, Another problem was the fact that I couldn't balance the front tire after three attempts. That along with the fact that they have to be the noisiest tyres from "new" that I have ever had the displeasure to endure. I thought I had bearings gone (newbies fitted with the tires) and it was upon checking them that to my horror I saw the state of the tires. I got onto Metzeler last October and they wanted me to send the front tire back and for me to wait 6 weeks for a replacement "IF IT WAS FOUND TO BE FAULTY" "BY THEM"! That wasn't possible (fabulous weather after months of rain) nor was it possible in winter (long story). I am driving bikes for 45 years and have had all sorts of tyres on and although I have seen feathering and cupping it wasn't until reaching near end of life. This is the first time I fitted Metzeler because I heard they were a long wearing tyre but the reviews must have been posted by the company themselves. My tyres speak for them selves!! I would go back to any of my previous choices (8,000 miles +) BUT I WILL NEVER BUY Metzeler AGAIN. I am dumbfounded that a German company could manufacture such rubbish. I am absolutely disgusted with these junk tyres and the headache they have caused. PURE AND UTTER GARBAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Any comments on the Dunlop D404 re: overall mileage and performance in the wet? I hear they're not particularly good on heavier bikes but I ride an 865cc Triumph Speedmaster.
They work pretty well in the rain and have pretty good overall mileage, and the Speedmaster is light enough for them, so they could be a good choice. -DrewZilla
Remember you can't diss the 404 on a Harley Davidson it is not designed for the Harley Davidson heavier cruisers. I installed 404's on my BMW R1200 CL and by R1200 C. They have been excellent on both bikes. Averaging 15,000 miles even before I considered replacing them. They give good wet road traction and will perform quite nicely all around.. They are a lot of Bang for the buck! Just order the right Dunlop 'Series' for your particular bike. Ride safe....
Not sure what the best is but I know the Dunlop d404 rear tire is GARBAGE! I'll be lucky to get over 5,000 miles. Spend the extra couple bucks and get something that will last.

Measuring a job by the number of "beers" is very common in shade-tree garages. I figured it was a related system, except I don't know that any "beer" scale goes from 0 to 3. Most seem to be 5 to moonshine, or 10 to cutting torch. lol or maybe that's just me.
Checking the forks, neck, axle, and rim, before you get your next tire. That what I would suggest. Because something there, is off kilter, if your front tire, wears out, before your drive tire. That us, assuming, your tires are a matched set, of course, because otherwise, you have a mileage based rear, and a sticky front. That's the only way something wouldn't be off, and you'd get that result.

Nailed it on the Pirelli Night Dragons. If you crash, it ain't cause of lack of grip. Mileage, about 8500 on the rear, 10 to 12k be on the front

Since the Shinko is cheap, you get to pay all that labor for a rear tire swap more frequently. Ask me how I know...

Similar experience, had fresh me888 on my forty eight and now my roadking special. Slips like mad on wet roads. Avoid at all cost.

The Commander II is no joke. I've got close to 11K on my Dyna Wide Glide and it's just now starting to see a very small flat spot on the rear.

I agree. I bought a 2016 Roadmaster and that is what I am taking off. Trying to figure out which tire to get.
My experience so far for rear tyres:
Dunlop 404 5k (average grip)
Pirelli Route 66: 8k (least grip)
Avon Cobra 8k (excellent grip)
Shinko 777 4k (excellent grip)
Pirelli Night Dragon TBA..

Ive got a set of 888's metzlers on my 1250 harley, and i love to power on it, very happy with the performance of the tire and the longevity.

I got 15k on my stock OEM dunlop on my road king probably could of went longer. They handled great in curves and rain.

Commander 2's lasted me 18,000 miles in 2yrs definitely worth getting. I'm due for a new back tire but the front one is still like new. I have a 01 Harley Softail.

Just got my 3rd set of Michelin scorchers 😎Stock tires with great grip on rainy days I avg about 20k miles per set.Def feel all the bumps but ill take that any day with a tire that gives me about 20k miles
El Mas Chingon those tires are known for having terrible grip, especially in the wet. I have one in the front and can’t wait to ditch it
You are the only one in the world that thinks Scorchers are good... perhaps you should try the second gear and ride faster than 5mph to realize they sux.

had the Avon Cobras stock on my Triumph Bonneville Speedmaster. they wore down and started losing the grip around the 25k kilometer mark. I had the Avon Cobra Chromes slapped on. I've had them for 3 days now and they are just as good as the stock Cobras and sticker along the sides. just my 2 cents worth!
I had a set on my VTX 1800, when dad passed it down to me. Grip was great for about 6,000 miles, then it got to the harder compound. Swapped over to the Shinkos, at that point, but Inha e the Cobra Chromes on.my Wife's PC 800. Great grip at the 3,000 mile mark, and it rides nice on them. Will update at 8,000.
Amongst Metzeller ME888 Marathon and Bridgestone H50 Battlecruise. what would you recommend for a fully loaded roadking (Tourpak, failing lowers, etc). Focus is more on grip with reasonable mileage. Unfortunately, Commander 2 is not an option for my geography (India) else it would have been a no brainer.
I was curious about night dragons unfortunately they don't come in the sizes I need. I own a Honda Shadow 750c, 120/90 17 (front) and 160/80 15 (rear). Currently I have a Bridgestone Exedra Max as my rear tires but find it a bit slippery, specially in road paints.
What would be your suggestions for a good grip tire?

@2 WheelsForever Which you want, if you are a.more aggressive rider. That west means it has the most grip it can have, which helps to keep you from laying it down, if you are hooning. If you ride more sedatetly, a tire with longer wear life, is a better option.

The elite 4 gets the mileage but sidewall cracks within 20 months on mine

I'm sure they are, but right now, we as riders have a choice. More longevity, with less grip, more grip but faster.wear, or something in the middle. Until tiee compounds improve further, that's where we.are stuck.
And I'd much rather repllace.a tire every.7,000.miles, than have.to replace a bike, at 5,000 miles, due to wrecking, because I wanted to not have to replace that tire, a little sooner.

The Iron 883 uses a 100/90-19 front and 150/80B16 rear tire. I believe the Iron is coming with Michelin Scorchers as stock, and those are actually pretty good. Some of the tires in this video would work for you as well. For even more grip (but with shorter tire life), consider the Pirelli Night Dragons. If you're putting big miles on that Iron, though, consider the Michelin Commander IIs. -DrewZilla

Tires available in Sri Lanka are different than the tires available here in the United States, so we cannot provide an accurate recommendation. Try to find a quality tire from a major manufacturer like Pirelli, Metzeler, Michelin, or Bridgestone. Even IRC and Kenda would be acceptable brands. -DrewZilla

question for ya.. i got a 2009 C50 Boulevard, i tried the standard Rear Dunlop that came with it.. good tire for sticking and cornering, and rode well for wet weather, but didn't like the wear life it gave me.. burned through it fast i thought 1 season &k kms!.. my question is" how is the Micheline Commander 2 for wet driving and handling, and sticking to pavement, for my C50.
I just put a new front Dunlop last season does it really matter that my front wont be same brand?" Will get the same front brand when i need to change it.

Due to the wide 240mm rear tire and specific 21 inch front, there are only a few options. The Michelin Scorcher 11 Tires have good grip and decent tire life. The Bridgestone H50 are more balanced between grip and tire life. The Dunlop American Elite and Metzeler ME888 are focused even more on tire life. -DrewZilla

Damn you getting paid good for this one dunlop's are good for going to walmart or the mailbox but for longevity or training they dont last hell the shinko 777 out lasted the dunflops and were bought and installed at the same time.

I’ve had the Scorcher tires (stock) and liked them and the night dragons were great but wore out twice as fast. I liked both for grip though.

No way anyone is getting 25K on the Commander IIs on a big touring bike. If they are super easy on them, they get around 10K miles on a rear tire.

A review of the same tires basically that have been out there for years is of little current value. There are lots of new tires available. How do they stack up? Not everybody wants to put a 250 dollar tire on when there are options at 2/3's the price. Are they any good?

Fitted Metzeler ME888 Ultra 180 Rear 4000 miles ago & the 150 Front 2500 miles ago for my F6CT and I am disgusted with both of them. German made tyres! The bike has had the forks serviced and new 440 Progressive shock fitted 18,000 miles ago. The rear tyre has high feathering and cupping and the front has feathering and cupping already, Another problem was the fact that I couldn't balance the front tire after three attempts. That along with the fact that they have to be the noisiest tyres from "new" that I have ever had the displeasure to endure. I thought I had bearings gone (newbies fitted with the tires) and it was upon checking them that to my horror I saw the state of the tires. I got onto Metzeler last October and they wanted me to send the front tire back and for me to wait 6 weeks for a replacement "IF IT WAS FOUND TO BE FAULTY" "BY THEM"! That wasn't possible (fabulous weather after months of rain) nor was it possible in winter (long story). I am driving bikes for 45 years and have had all sorts of tyres on and although I have seen feathering and cupping it wasn't until reaching near end of life. This is the first time I fitted Metzeler because I heard they were a long wearing tyre but the reviews must have been posted by the company themselves. My tyres speak for them selves!! I would go back to any of my previous choices (8,000 miles +) BUT I WILL NEVER BUY Metzeler AGAIN. I am dumbfounded that a German company could manufacture such rubbish.
I am absolutely disgusted with these junk tyres and the headache they have caused. PURE AND UTTER GARBAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Any comments on the Dunlop D404 re: overall mileage and performance in the wet? I hear they're not particularly good on heavier bikes but I ride an 865cc Triumph Speedmaster.
They work pretty well in the rain and have pretty good overall mileage, and the Speedmaster is light enough for them, so they could be a good choice. -DrewZilla
Remember you can't diss the 404 on a Harley Davidson it is not designed for the Harley Davidson heavier cruisers. I installed 404's on my BMW R1200 CL and by R1200 C. They have been excellent on both bikes. Averaging 15,000 miles even before I considered replacing them. They give good wet road traction and will perform quite nicely all around.. They are a lot of Bang for the buck! Just order the right Dunlop 'Series' for your particular bike. Ride safe....

Not sure what the best is but I know the Dunlop d404 rear tire is GARBAGE! I'll be lucky to get over 5,000 miles. Spend the extra couple bucks and get something that will last.

Measuring a job by the number of "beers" is very common in shade-tree garages. I figured it was a related system, except I don't know that any "beer" scale goes from 0 to 3. Most seem to be 5 to moonshine, or 10 to cutting torch. lol or maybe that's just me.

Checking the forks, neck, axle, and rim, before you get your next tire. That what I would suggest. Because something there, is off kilter, if your front tire, wears out, before your drive tire.
That us, assuming, your tires are a matched set, of course, because otherwise, you have a mileage based rear, and a sticky front. That's the only way something wouldn't be off, and you'd get that result.
