Juilan's Spy Program will show up again mid Season 5 although Vic's Lounge basically replaces it as the Crew's Holoprogram
Avery Brooks as Doctor Noah is just an absolute treat. You can tell he was having an friggin ball *devouring* the scenery. 😂
I'm not sure if this is something I once knew and forgot, but I *just* got the biblical meaning of his name in context here and not just the satire portion. Hah!
Avery Brooks always seems to have a lot of fun when he's doing something unusual, extravagant and out-of-character.
One of my favorite lines in this series is Garak saying “I think I joined the wrong intelligence agency”
I love how goofy old man Kor is. It’s hard to believe this is the man that went head to head with Captain Kirk, but he’s just living his best life now.
Julian Bashir: Secret Agent never did return... Because CBS actually got a cease and decist letter from MGM studios and the Bond producers 😂
Ollie, you have 100% seen the Runabout lift up from the pad a dozen times before this XD
I love the fact they portray O’Brien as a true command NCO. All the junior officers outrank him but they are all terrified of ticking him off.
Our Man Bashir is a play on the title of the movie Our Man Flint (1966) and its sequel In Like Flint (1967), a parody of the James Bond 007 franchise, but not as outlandish as the Austin Powers movies that also parody the James Bond and Flint franchises.
And the sequel title was itself a play on the by-then-almost-forgotten phrase, "in like Flynn".
A Klingon is to the sword of Kahless as Gollum is to the ring of power.
My understanding is that Nana & Siddig became an item not before or after but DURING the making of this episode, and a small family wasn't far behind!!
You wouldn't like Kor as much when you remember what he did in the TOS episode "Errand of Mercy."
Kor has a knack for making you alternate between love and hate even in this series :)
Unrelated but just saw Wikipedia's note on "EoM": D.C. Fontana said she thought the Romulans were much more interesting than the Klingons but the Klingons were chosen as the regular adversaries of the series because they did not need any special makeup like the pointed ears for the Romulans.
Oh how little they knew haha.
Actually, that's part of Kor's charm: since the TOS "Errand of Mercy" totalitarianism, maybe after 100 Earth years of Trek canon, the 130-year-old Kor has settled down a bit and become more reasonable with that much life experience
This episode reminded me of "Moonraker" the first Bond movie i saw in the theaters. Killing everyone except a select few geniuses
After the Our Man Bashir episode aired, Star Trek got sued by the James Bond producers. So we don't get to return to this story as much as the DS9 crew originally wanted.
Interesting fact 1: *Our Man Bashir* aired six days after the premise of *GoldenEye* Pierce Bronsnan's debut as Bond.
Interesting fact 2: Dr Noah is a mixture of Dr No and Noah (Noah Ark), hence his plan to flood the entire world and repopulate his version of the human race, like Hugo Drax. Another Bond villain.
There was supposed to be other episodes with Bashir in his spy program but MGM Studios wasn't too happy sending a letter saying it crossed the line from to infringement. A shame I think they were wrong.
Hippocrates Noah so he's a hypocritical Noah trying to flood the rest of humanity and save only himself.
@@TheAtkeyyes, sadly this is the only episode. Glad you enjoyed it. I remember watching this so many times back in 1995/96.
There will only be a small scene in a future episode as o'brien as falcon holding Bashir at gun point in a car, but this is the only full episode 😢
Two fun episodes. It really helped the character of Jadzia by involving her with the Klingons
I loved when Julian admitted to Garak that he WAS trying to kill him when he shot him, and it immediately earned Garak's deepest respect. I told you you'd get a kick out of this one.😁😁
"Our Man Bashir" is one of the funnest episodes of this whole series!! It's always great to see this cast playing alternate characters, but seeing Avery Brooks as Dr. Noah is next level!!! It's such a blast, and every time Avery gets to ham it up is a FANTASTIC time!!!!
"It's a clock!" is his greatest villain performance but this is a close second :)
John Colicos had a wonderfully expressive face. He also played Baltar in the original Battlestar Galactica.
RIP John Colicos. I hope he got to enjoy his new fans from this series. BTW, he was Canadian.
That's right, I forgot about that. Shatner is also Canadian....yep the great Captain Kirk is a canuck!
@@nathanfitzgerald6651Shatner is Canadian, you know. Isn't Ollie one too?
....
Lol, I was trying to play with Riker and Lavelle's "Lower Decks" dialog but can't really make it work.
@@silikon2 Yes, Capt. Kirk and Ollie are both Canadian.
@@nathanfitzgerald6651 Kirk is from Iowa, Shat is Canadian ;)
But I was trying to spoof the TNG "Lower Decks" bit where Lavelle thought Riker was Canadian but Riker's actually from Alaska.
But I failed miserably ;)
@@silikon2 Haha to be honest, while everyone loves Lower Decks that's a bit of a niche line :P
Silly Klingon adventures are always my favorite episodes.
And Our Man Bashir is the only episode that contradicts my rule that I don't like episodes about Holodeck malfunctions, transporter accidents, or time travel.
The producers were very strict about not having the holodeck malfunction - and this episode passed the test because they actually got it to do MORE than it was designed for in saving the crew's lives, with some complications of course...
No rule against transporter accidents though apparently :P Actually, there are some pretty good ones with transporters and/or time travel IMO!
You're right, Dr. Bashir has secrets. 🤫🤐 I'm a grown woman and I can't help but have a big-time fan crush on Bashir. So handsome! 💙
Fun fact: the Lethe is a river in the Ancient Greek underworld that shades would drink from to forget their previous lives.
Bashir likes to escape into a fantasy where he gets to be a near super power level hero whose super smart, super athletic, super charismatic... I wonder why he wants to make believe in a world where he can enjoy being all those things? I mean we'd all love to be that but is there something deeper at play?
The music in Our Man Bashir is just the DS9 theme played to a swing beat by a big band. The tune itself is somewhat similar to the Bond melody, with the notes rising and falling in about the same place so they would work well together.
Apparently, in real life Nana Visitor's brother was an actual CIA agent.
The composer for "Our Man Bashir" was Emmy nominated. For his MGM/Bond ripoff music haha. But I support the nom, nice homage!
Sword of Kahless is the Klingon equivalent to Excalibur in Arthurian myth, except that in ST verse, that sword of Kahless is real...
I love the Holstian style of David Bell's music for those DS9 Klingon episodes. It is used in some Voyager episodes as well but not necessarily about Klingons.
The Urq are the only aliens who managed to invade the Klingons. Klingon Mythology states that the Klingons killed their Gods because they were too much trouble. A fan theory suggests that thos said Gods might have been the Urq themselves that the Klingons finally pushed away. I imagine the Urq as the Klingon equivalent to the Goa'uld in Stargate SG-1, a race invading others, making themselves pass as Gods by their superior technology and then, one planet rebels.
Voyager has also its fantasy Holodeck episodes that are quite fine.
Are you saying Excalibur isn't real??
Everyone knows it's held by the guardians of Atlantis, duh
Sword of Kahless was the first episode of season 4 other than Way of the Warrior written with Worf being part of the cast all other episodes were greenli before Micheal Dorn joining the cast being finalized. That's why Worf in the other episodes was relegated to B plots. This changes going forward.
The Sword of Kahless, the Klingon precious...Bashir, Julian Bashir
The sword would've probably ended up in that warehouse near the Ark of the Covenant, plus, everyone loves "Our Man Bashir"
Destroyed runabout count: 4
(Always take the Rio Grande)
Sword of Kahless reminds me a lot of the darksaber in star wars and what it means to the mandalorians who are a similar honor based warrior culture as the klingons.
"I think it's safe to say Julian Bashir, Secret Agent, will return." - well, not after MGM threatened legal action he wasn't lol. This episode came out the same year I think as Tomorrow Never Dies and MGM were very unhappy with it as they felt it could affect audience viewings of the james bond films.
Well they couldnt show a full episode again but it was shown in small parts and scenes from time to time.
This is my most favorite episode in ALL of Star Trek!
This is a bit of a spoiler perhaps, but at the time, it was rumoured this episode was a satirical take on James Bond and the spy genre. If you watch closely, you see some similarities here and there.
That's just a crazy rumor.😳
Avery Brooks would've made a great Bond villain.
Michael Eddington, The Hero!!!!!!!
Is not that episode! Is The Sword of Kahless and Our Man Bashir one is direct be LeVar Burton
He should be promoted for saving Sisko's life.
It's his day in the limelight - and he's still a minor B-plot :P
Holodeck safeties: my personal theory is there aren't any. They were supposed to be installed Tuesday but they never got around to it.
John Colicos, the OG Klingon. ❤️
You just know that at his first opportunity Kor would fly back and retrieve the sword.
Our Man Bashir has to the single most fun episode of Trek. It's so classy and funny and sexy camp.
Plus, it lets Edditington, Odo and Rom save the day!
Well the Captain Proton episode of Voyager is probably only slightly better and more campy, but as far as DS9 episodes go, this one was fun.
It's fun but I wouldn't go that far.
It’s so appropriate that Ollie has a Lord of the Rings poster behind him for this reaction!
But it's not out yet
@@mikemorgan2211 I mean the books are out :P But I think of _Last Crusade_ the most with this one.
...starring James Bond! OMG IT'S ALL CONNECTED
I love both of these episodes.
Our Man Bashir was supposed to be the first of a couple of episodes playing with his Bond-like alter ego... however, they got a little too close to the Bond franchise and were sued to stop any more episodes continuing the infringements... So the DS9 legal department agreed to let it go and never do another one again. :/ Too bad, but at least in our head canon, he saw many more adventures off screen! :)
The Bond people were so unappreciative of the homage DS9 paid to James Bond. They needed to take a chill pill!
Hey, I just realized: *J* ulian *B* ashir. *J* ames *B* ond. Same initials. I wonder if that's where they got the idea for that episode.
A Secret Service agent is an entirely different thing than a secret agent.
I think that the British Secret Service is made up of spies. MI5
Ah, you're going to have A LOT of playful fun with these two episodes, Ollie. I officially predict it, lol!
I loved that intro. Hahaha.
Thank you, Oliver! 🖖 As you noted, LeVar Burton and Winrich Kolbe directed these two installments.
Sisko's using the same type of razer Geordi was using in an early TNG episode.
If he wishes to see Kang again, there's a TOS episode, a TAS episode and a Voyager episode...
Does he know that this is the son of Duras?
This reminds me that STNG's "RIghtful Heir" (S6E23) would have been a good episode to watch as a prerequisite to "Sword of Kahless"
It answers the question of who the current Klingon Emperor is, and his role in Klingon politics as compared to Chancellor Gowron.
23:50 "I'll bet that Julian has some other secrets..."
You have no idea... and I hope that no one tells you.
So glad you got to go into Our Man Bashir relatively unspoiled. For the most part your commenters are pretty cool people.
We've seen runabouts rising out of the station numerous times... since the very first episode.
Ah the Lethe, the ugly version of beta zoids LOL. When he got stabbed in the back and uttered that noise, I thought "Ahh, so that's how it feels to get stabbed" LOL
EON (Everything Or Nothing) productions under Barbara Broccoli sued Paramount Pictures for too closely imitating James Bond. However, it was settled out of court and the episode got the green light to be aired even in syndication.
The guy who played Kang was also in Babylon 5, Hint Hint :)
I don't think he watched the Kahless episode of TNG did he? Dammit, it's so frustrating that he skipped around on TNG, and keeps missing all these important links and backstories.
Mona luvsitt - spoke seven languages, possessed degrees in chemistry, physics, and biology, could fly anything from a jet to a helicopter... But it's 1964 so her job is to get in the kitchen and make him a sand... A martini, make him a martini
27:05 by the way, garak’s outfit here actually looks really similar to an outfit that a James bond love interest wore once
I personally think that Kevin Costner's "Waterworld" movie is a sequel to Julian's holoprogram!
I think the Sword Of Kahless might be made from some exotic alloy that makes Klingons go nuts when they touch it.
As soon as they stopped holding it, their minds cleared up.
This was the original idea for the episode, that the sword had a toxic property, according to Hans Beimler, one of the writers, but they decided against it. The character's internal flaws are what makes them act out, not an external force.
@@AdamMPick See the one thing I just can't get past is Worf LYING to Kor about a ledge and being willing to order him to plummet to his death. If it was some seemingly honorable thing he could justify it to himself with, maybe, but I just can't think of any other part of Worf's characterization that lines up with "bah he's an old man, I should get him dead for the glory of the empire!"
Road trip next week!
We have not seen the last of Julian Bashir, Spy 😮
Dam man,spoilers!
@@Gavin-Hewitt It's even more disappointing that 6 people like spoilers. 😠
@@MrDeathpilot Says the guy who hints about Bashir's future in his own comment then "hopes nobody says anything". One rule for me and another for thee eh?
6 likes huh (8 now). It's almost like what constitutes a spoiler is subjective not everyone agrees with you two that "Bashir doesn't immediately stop liking or referencing spy stuff" is actually a spoiler.
@@jerodast ◄Troll.
Ollie: "I think Bashir has some secrets."
Me: [spit take]... _cough_ _cough_
(Im an old smoker...thats why I coughed. No other reason. Nothing to see here.)
🤗🖖
Don't tell something abut his secret love to Das?
😁
"Our Man Bashir" turned out to be more than just a fun romp and homage to James Bond. Do keep this episode in your mind moving forward.
No, that's not how that works.
A little bit of continuity is missing for you by not having seen TNG "Rightful Heir."
Cheers for the reaction, Ollie. As regards Bashir having secrets, well maybe ;)
Our Man Bashir is good fun. A cynic could say it's just an excuse for the cast to play some different roles and indulge in the James Bond fantasy. But I think that's fine. After all, Little Green Men was a rather comic episode (and I love the reference in that episode to a picture of Gabrielle Bell resembling Sisko)
It's great how DS9 can have really moving episodes like The Visitor, and deal with some serious themes (occupation, prejudice, loyalty....)... yet also spares some time for just a fun episode.
Anyhow, hope you continue to enjoy your Deep Space Nine journey.
It's nice to revisit DS9 with Ollie. Although there's a tinge of sadness, knowing that a few of the cast are no longer with us.
"I bet Julian has some other secrets we haven't uncovered yet" I can't wait for you to reach the episodes where we learn Julian's big secret. Bc oh boy he has one...
CONTINUITY & PRODUCTION ERRORS
THE SWORD OF KAHLESS (IMDb Rating: 7.1)
6:08 When Worf says: "The Rio Grande is available" the audio is obviously dubbed in. The close captioning originally said "Mekong" instead of Rio Grande, but this has been corrected in the repackaged DVD set.
10:27 There is blood on Dax's fingers when she tends to Worf's wound, but it disappears when she moves her hand to his back. (not visible in this edit).
17:44 Why is the Sword rotating as it drifts away?
It should have materialized in the same position it was transported in.
OUR MAN BASHIR (IMDb Rating: 8.0)
In the preview for this episode, it shows Bashir shoving a clip into a gun.
In the actual episode, he's removing it.
31:37 The music in this scene has been changed. On older DVDs, the close-captioning reveals the words to the original song:
"Girl, you really got me now..
You got me so I can't sleep at night.
Girl, you really got me now..
You got me so I can't sleep at night." 😂
My Klingon story to tell:
Their escape through the tunnel system required both agility and strength to leap upon cave rats and skillfully use the terrain to climb and advance. But when the elder Klingon tired, it was hard for Kor to "hardcore parkour" down the corridor toward the door.
"I'll bet Julian has some other secrets"
🤐🤐
I absolutely love Our Man Bashir! They got in so much trouble with MGM for this episode though, MGM were NOT happy at all! Unfortunately I can't really comment more on Our Man Bashir without spoiling or at least foreshadowing some stuff!
MGM were just sourpusses!
23:50 Julian Bashir? Keeping secrets? Never!
Kor John Colicos Battlestar Galactica Baltar 1980 and one of my favorite actress show next time up Susan Gibney so everyone who recognize her roll in TNG make a comment???
Don't forget John Colicos as Mikkos Cassadine from the 1980s heyday of "General Hospital." GH fans will remember its ice machine storyline.
@@hippusmaximus9319 ah "GH" was not really run in Germany
So the Freddie cougar guy is not the same from the dream episode but is the same race
Now the Hur'q are one of the coolest races, we never see what they look like but in the non canon game star Trek online they do become a thing in a whole chapter. The Hur'q are an insect race that verys in appearance (mainly size and head crest shape) but are quite intimidating in appearance. Dispite their appearance they were described as quite friendly until the newly formed dominion found them and tried enslaving them by taking their only food source away (a white fungus) this however made them very aggressive and hungry forcing them to leave their own homeworld and spread across the galaxy like a plague eventually they found the bajoran wormhole and made it to the Klingon homeworld.
The Hur'q go on a 2,000 year hibernation and quite literally bury their own fleet. I won't spoil much but I highly recommend getting star Trek online, it's free to play
But it's not out yet
