Imo Ds9 is still the best Star Trek series ever made. The character development alone makes you feel like you know these people and live along side them.
Same here. And I'm a Hardcore die hard TOS fan from my childhood back in the 70s. Totally agree.
I still love my TNG, but I agree DS9 has the greatest character arcs, writing quality and an overall sense of mythology.
Agreed DS9 has the best stories/character development of all Trek shows. The only other Trek shows that get anywhere near the quality of stories/character development is TNG and Discovery.
@@Chris22IE Woah woah woah I was tracking till the very last word. I get that opinions in this type of matter are subjective and typically treat them that way, and I respect your opinion, but even with that mindset I still find myself replying. That's crazy.
100% agree
This episode came out for eight years years before 9/11. And this episode predicted the earliest responses. Go back into the information age. There was some new legislation being brought up that we would all call the largest violation of privacy and infringements on American rights. This legislature was university. Shut down with a few the tractor. Still trying to push it through. Fast forward to 2002. The USA patriot act goes into affect. What freedoms we give up is just as if not more terrifying than the threats we face directly. More often than not, we lose sight of what we really are when facing adversity.
Your excitement at seeing Nog made me tear up. The actor Aron passed a few years ago. He was a great guy and I loved his work on DS9. And the scene where Jake cheers him up is touching.
One of the best two parters in Trek history. It hits deep. And the Sisko family is simply awesome! Love Joseph Sisko!
I think Ollie completely missed the subtext of this episode. It's about the line between totalitarianism and freedom. How much freedom is worth giving up to insure safety and happiness, and how individual dictators can gain their power, and the rationalization behind them. It has so many corollaries in the real world that can be an inspiration. "I alone can save us."
Every television show in this era had to do a 9/11 episode.
Of course, most shows waited until _after_ the attacks to do theirs, while DS9 did it several years before that...
Earth! Changlings! Sisko's dad! Real food! The Excelsior Refit upgrade! Miles the Founder!
And, most importantly, the battle of morals between freedom and security.
Truly, an episode that hits home today (unfortunately).
And sadly the last time that Excelsior model would be filmed. It's only a "refit" because they couldn't unglue the bits they stuck on it in Generations without damaging it. And they only added those bits on in Generations, so they could damage the model without "damaging it" ironically. After this, they made a new Excelsior model which they use a little in DS9 and also in Voyager (Flashback). This one was only 3 feet long and not the insane 7 or even 8 feet that the original excelsior was. All other versions from hereon in are CGI - and they use the original (non refit) look.
And then they auctioned it off in the Christie's auction!
All the young'uns need to remember this episode (and show) was written and aired in the 90s. Before 9/11. When I first saw this I thought eh, it's fine, but the whole debate about Federation principles and martial law was a little overdramatic. Played sooo differently in the 2000s. _DS9_ has multiple episodes like that, that I appreciate more partly with my own age but partly with the world proving them more meaningful than I thought.
@@jerodast yeah there's episodes like this, or The Drumhead which at the time seem "too on the nose" - but when you actually go through it IRL you realise that Trek was playing it DOWN!
Like that DS9 episode with a pandemic (Babel) - and people are breaking quarantine for stupid reasons etc. At the time I thought why would someone be so stupid but then... covid.
@@jerodastIt's a good point. I saw this first run and thought it was rather over the top as well. Definitely has a different vibe post 9/11.
BSG went whole hog on the same theme.
My friend ways thought when changeling O'Brien said, "I do enjoy your company" that meant he had interacted with Sisko several times before over the past year but Sisko didn't know. Found that interesting.
Leyton was a villain I liked. You can see his motivations and how he got there and almost understand it all. He had noble goals but went about it completely in the wrong way.
It's a very Star Trek internal conflict for Starfleet. Everyone's still professional and thinks they're doing the right thing. I also love that the climax rested on the decision of a brand new captain we didn't really know at all, doing the right thing.
played by an excellent actor who appeared in nearly everything back in the 90s
I liked the villain and the basic story but didn't like the Defiant becoming involved or even a space battle at all.
To me it early fizzled out and on retrospect is giving me Voyager flashbacks. (Voyager was notorious for contriving a space battle in an absurd number of episodes. This isn't a spoiler because they were so meaningless and contrived.)
This is nowhere near that silly, but imho it was 1) artificial and 2)) this is at least the second time they've done it.
I thought the Defiant battle in The Die Is Cast to rescue was gratuitous and senseless. It did have the nice Eddington sabotage but I wish they had stayed sabotaged because it made little sense. The Jem Hadar shouldn't have been attacking their shuttle anyway since the changelings deliberately saved Odo.
The Defiant staying sabotaged could have been an interesting b story too. The Romulan/Cardassian attack on the Founders was a flat out declaration of war and you wouldn't want to be hanging around near there in a disabled ship. And that was basically the reason The Sisko was ordered to protect Bajor in the first place, the anticipated blowback.
Holy crap my post was long.
Kind of like whats going on in the world today.......
Glad you're feeling better!
18:07 / 36:21 "Paradise Lost" is a famous epic poem; it's been used as the title of several tv episodes, films, and songs for decades. Maybe you knew that already, but it sounded like maybe you didn't.
19:39 After 3x11-12, none of DS9's two-parters use "Part 1" and "2" in the titles. You seemed to really like the surprise, so I won't tell you when any others will occur :-D
It's kind of crazy that DS9 is the only Trek show where family members are recurring characters. Spock's father, Sarek, is in multiple episodes of _Discovery,_ but otherwise each show has only a few episodes *at most* with major family members.
Hey, if no one else mentioned it, glad you're feeling better, Ollie. Don't be like Sisko's dad- go to the doctor, take your medicine, give blood...
You should recognize Sisko's dad from Star Trek 4 and 6. Admiral Cartwright...
When I see him in _Star Trek IV_ I want that to be part of Sisko's backstory, then when I see him in _Star Trek VI,_ I don't :P
Fake O'Brien: There are four changelings.
Odo: THERE ARE FIVE CHANGELINGS!
😂😅😂
If I were a changeling, I don't think I would turn into a toilet. Sure, you have the element of surprise, but if your timing is off just a little, it will be a sh!tty mission.
Tbh, this episode was better than a battle, without consequences pew pew means nothing.
Ds9 at its very best. And another great showing of humans are not squeeky clean
The Lakota was the actual physical model of the Enterprise B from Generations
@@Jeremy-83 I never knew this!!!
I love the way this episode challenges the heart of the Federation. Even with all their social and technological advancements, they nearly fall into the same trap as so many nations in history (and a ton of them in the last century and a half): "give the government power so they can protect you, your freedom and rights aren't as important as the safety of the whole . . ."
A very Borg ideology, wouldn't you say? At least the Borg will TELL you their plans for assimilation . . . 😉
23:32 "Oh, this guy's definitely a changling- what a weirdo!!"
😅 Love Ollie's off-hand remarks. He's so similar to my spontaneous commentary on my channel (rarely regarding reaction videos, though). I'm gonna say it again; I am enjoying watching DS9 episodes again vicariously through Ollie's eyes...🖖
Hell yeah! Welcome back to the DS9 party!
What a pair to come back to, great timing (other than having to be sick at all)
This 2-part episode is such a good bait & switch. It makes you feel the same paranoia that the characters are feeling, then breaks it just as soundly for both you & the characters.
I'm glad that you got to see these two episodes back-to-back. The DS9 two parters are like watching a satisfying Trek film. Remember Red Squad. All the details in DS9 are important.
17:33 "a 34-parter" - well that comes in seasons 5-6-7.
One of those comments that's both a spoiler and not at all a spoiler.
@@meropetied I just mean it gets more serialised over time
So this story was actually meant to be the season 3 finale but when plans were set in motion for Worf to become a regular those plans changed and this story ended up in the middle of season 4.
Ollie - what sets Ds9 apart from other Star Trek series, besides being based on a space station, is that there are serialized arcs woven throughout the 7 seasons. You will see Cisco's dad again :) And you will an arc later on with Nog that will be one of the epic episodes of a later season. Odo, Warf and Kira will also get continuing character development. I can see already that as a result of the character arcs, you are already becoming emotionally invested in them. And Quark vs Odo as "frenemies" will continue all the way till the end of Season 7!
I love the scene with impostor Obrien.
"Do anything against...CHANGElings?" He definitely hammed it up a bit but it was very fun just taunting Sisko haha.
Meaney is such a good actor. He was playing O'Brien just a bit too chipper.
The changing is such an imposter, he has lost his Irish heritage: O'Brien - Obrien 🤫
15:00 "Can they really do that?" (fake a blood test)
Yes - they've done it once already in season 3 - fake Bashir passes a test he shouldn't have and we later find out Bashir (real Bashir) has been locked in a closet.
Actually at least one other person who is long term impersonating that we don't know about yet.
That changeling wasn’t tested. He faked a positive on Eddington before it could come to that.
@@nathancline4000 ODO!
The Sisko's dad has a point.
He's a smart old guy.
"Damn dad I didn't know you were so devious!"
SPOILERS - we find out he is definitely right about faking blood tests later on, although I forget how intentional it was by the writers.
The Sisko's dad is wise, in many things.
So weird seeing The Sisko in that TNG uniform.
I think they diluted The Sisko's blazing direct order to Nog by cutting to Nog. Obviously he was going to have to obey it.
Seems like the changelings would try imitating Odo to discredit him.
I had to laugh when Leyton screamed "It's not OVER!", banging the table with his fists. He reminded me so much of my old teacher at school who looked just like Robert Foxworth who played Leyton in this episode. =D
Interesting side note. The actor who plays Admiral Leyton was supposed to be leading to different Sci-Fi insurrections against the elected leaders of Earth at the exact same time. He was also a General in Babylon 5 trying to lead the good forces to take Earth back. As he was double booked with these episodes, Babylon 5 killed him off offscreen.
I have a theory that Sisko's Restaurant has been passed down from generation to generation, starting with Tiana and Prince Naveen from "The Princess and the Frog", 350 years!
Never be timid about verbalizing your guesses about the plot. If you' right, you'll feel great and we'll be impressed, if your off, it will be entertaining contemplating what "could have been", maybe in the mirror universe or Kelvin timeline.
Ollie, you saw Sisko's dad (Brock Peters) in two Star Trek movies, playing an admiral. He's also famous for starring in Porgy and Bess, To Kill a Mockingbird, and his civil rights activism.
If it's tall, it's probably a coffee pot, not a tea pot. It looked like Homer Laughlin Fiesta Ware, an art deco design introduced in the 1930s and still produced. It has retro futuristic vibes.
These episodes ask an important question: How much freedom are you willing to give up for security? You don't need a real bogeyman to be afraid of your closet, you just need to be told there's one and you'll smother and suffocate yourself under your blankets to get away from it. Star Trek really was ahead of the curb, but DS9 hits close to home (deliberate word choice) even years after it first aired.
Quark and Morn are basically Rocket and Groot.
"Hardly a dictatorship Ben...I'm going to be King Leyton first of his name!"
Creating the founders and the gem Hadar and making them the main antagonist throughout the series was so brilliant it's insane and don't worry your battle scenes are coming
Glad you feel better
I wish we had transporters right now! It would make my moving to Scranton, PA so much easier
Thank you (and I'm glad you're feeling better), Oliver! 🖖 David Livingston and Reza Badiyi directed these two episodes.
Chilling episodes. Hate that I'll miss the live stream. Will catch it after my eye appointment.
This episode is Star Trek's version of the movie "Seven Days in May". Which tells the story of an American military coup in the 1960s. Great movie.
OMG it´s Chase from Falcon Crest!
Ha! I used to love that show.
CONTINUITY & PRODUCTION BOO BOOS
HOMEFRONT (IMDb Rating 8.4)
3:05 According to the Stardate (49170.65 is seen onscreen here, and this was 2 days ago, according to Worf) , this episode occurs before "Rejoined" (Stardate 49195.5)
6:55 For some odd reason, Sisko is in a TNG uniform when he's on Earth.
6:59 Commander Benteen looks a lot like Leah Brahms (Booby Trap & Galaxy's Child) 🤔
14:12 The napkin around Joe's finger gets dropped when he gets angry, but reappears on his hand when he falls to the floor
14:25 When Grandpa Joe is explaining how shape-shifters can beat a blood test, he's obviously reading from cue cards.
PARADISE LOST (IMDb Rating 8.4)
20:45 & 30:57 Every time you see Starfleet headquarters, the same two people keep walking past. 🤔
22:58 Neither Nog nor Shepard have cadet insignia bars on their uniforms as seen in "The First Duty"
32:38 The Lakota is the Enterprise-B model from "Generations". They just changed the name and registry number.
Sisko wears the TNG uniform on Earth because in the DS9 production "bible" from season one where they set up the original lore of the show to build on there were two competing ideas for explaining the in universe reason for different uniforms from TNG 1. The DS9 uniforms were for space stations or "ground crew" type of thing rather than starship. Reason 2 was that being a work in progress, dirty work operation getting the station ready job the uniforms were practical work uniforms like in early TNG when you sometimes saw engineers in scrubs/jumpsuit overalls. (The real life reason was just to differentiate the two shows) but reason 2 explains why Sisko changes to a more formal uniform when he gets to Earth... Those whole reasons get messed up anyway by Star Trek Generations where the cast are wearing both uniforms - they were meant to have whole new ones for the movie but ran out of budget so actually borrowed DS9s wardrobe - when you see Jonathan Frakes or Levar Burton wearing the coloured shoulders/black all over/blue undershirt costumes their actually borrowing g Avery Brooks and Colm Meaneys costumes.
Another interesting costume tidbit (if we're into that) and related to borrowing costumes. A lot of the background actors at Starfleet command in this episode, especially in the courtyard outside - the ones walking through the background are wearing TNG season 1 uniforms without the neck colars
@@Calzaki In early TNG Season 3, many of the background characters are still wearing season 2 uniforms.
....And it keeps getting better and better from season 5 on. As a show from back in the '90s, it has aged like an exquisite fine wine (just like me, lol!). And Sisko's dad was always a fun old curmudgeon of a character.
Funny thing: the actor who plays Admiral Leyton, Robert Foxworth, played a recurring character named General Hague on _Babylon 5,_ which was airing at the same time as DS9. General Hague was a military officer involved in an attempted military coup against the civilian authority on Earth. Robert Foxworth also later played a character on _Stargate: SG-1_ who was the civilian leader of a world who was nearly overthrown by a military coup!
I highly, _highly_ recommend _Babylon 5!_
Remember these two episodes when you get to the final chapter, as it from there that a certain incident started from.
14:25 - 14:32 Also, Sisko's father saying that the Changeling could fool the blood screening by taking its victim's blood and put it into itself like Decoy Octopus and make it pour out on command is a hint to a possible disguised Changeling that got pass the blood screenings in next season premier episode.
The Excelsior class refit is my favorite starship. Idk why. When I see an Excelsior class I just think "Majestic" which is why my tier 6 x2 ship in Star Trek online is a refit Excelsior with red flair paint named the U.S.S. Majestic 😂
The history on the Refit is amazing- John Eaves intended the two additional impulse engines to be shuttlebays, but someone didn't get the memo and Berman liked the stronger look of the orange engines so ...that was that
Eaves was plagued with miscommunication from his art to VFX- Like the Son's command ship- it's flying backwards onscreen! After that, Eaves started drawing a big arrow to indicate which direction was forward!😳😜
My favorite 2 parter in all of star trek
Literally Canada in real time. Love the channel and your reactions.
the 24th cwntury... where you can say "It was JUST a mild stroke"
Wholesome overload
My favorite 2 parter of star trek
Loooove Joe Sisko, look forward to seeing him again. Props to Captain Benteen for doing the right thing and, according to one of the video games, accepting a demotion to Lt. Cmdr. for conspiracy. Even though she should've thanked Odo for getting shot 15 times :P
I'd forgotten how almost none of the regular crew were in this episode so they had to get their time crammed into the first scenes of "Homefront" and ofc the battle scenes of "Paradise Lost". DS9 does casual interactions pretty well usually, but maybe it's just I love these characters forever :)
Borg name drop.
Any time you go to Earth you have to mention the Borg now :(
I want to live in a time when you can move house by beaming in the furniture
Im glad you explained how day and night works, i got really confused
glad I could clarify for you 😂
Old man Siskos doctor obviously never heard of hipaa
Dude DS9 has the best battles in all of the star trek series in my opinion. Just wait for it. Long live General Mortok
Six Changlings = No more Milky Way galaxy 😂😂😂😂
Sisko's papa is the same actor as Admiral Cartright in ST 4 and 6 !
Captain Benteen is played by the same actress who plays Dr Leah Brahms in TNG.
Federation Presidency is still in Paris, however, fun fact, the diorama used to portray the city is a mach up of different images. They show Hotel Dieu Hospital on Ile de la Cité and Tournelle Bridge which is NOT in front of it IRL, Eiffel Tower is NOT that close to Hotel Dieu either...
One of those Starfleet Badmirals.
Siskos dad is played by the same actor who played admiral Cartwright in star trek 4 and 6.
And Darth Vader in the 1981 NPR radio version of Star Wars.
Great reaction, you should watch "What We Left Behind" when you're done w DS9. Awesome documentary.
Ollie, I'm so glad you're feeling better. And yes, definitely. We gotta take care of ourselves. I love this Two part ds9 Episode, because it's kind of mirroring. What's happening in real life now. We have people who want more restrictions and more control over our society, and that's not good.
Did you recognise Brock Peters, Sisko's dad, from the TOS movies? Admiral Cartwright from several of the first 6 movies. They got a great actor in to play Ben's father.
He was also Darth Vader in the original Star Wars Radio Presentation.
4th season delivering as promised.
if i was a changeling i would hang out in the cadets locker room disguised as a shower head
I want to know how new Red Squad is... Wesley had interactions, but Sisko didn't know about them?? Wasn't one of them?
Love your vids, Hope you do Voyager too, it runs concurrent to this series so there is so overlap among factions but also tons of new aliens and great eps
Robert Foxworth played a sort of early version of Data in Gene Roddenberry's 1974 television pilot, "The Questor Tapes"; he also played "General Hague" in two episodes of Babylon Five. That show killed off the character when Foxworth went to DS9.
He was only on _DS9_ for one two parter haha. Was Straczynski that bitter about it? Several crossover actors between the shows.
Foxworth also played in the live action Transformers. I believe he was Ratchet
Considering all the talk of authoritarian governments, finding out who is a changeling and who isn't (vaccines) - shows you how far ahead of its time this series was and the topics that it covered.
Just my opinion, this 2-parter is better than Way Of The Warrior and is a spectacular showcase of the danger The Founders will be for the rest of the series
Is that Leah Brahams? As in Dr. Brahams, Georgi's special friend?
Yup. She had to change her identity after too many fan letters from Geordi. 😅
15:43 A reference to Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home?
"worst admiral I've ever seen"
As over the line as Layton went, it sounds like some one has forgotten several of the admirals in earlier Star Trek...
I wish Worf chose to "finish" the Lakota
LETS gooooo
Today's the 15th!
I think the sad thing about this episode is it would go on to reflect a post 9/11 America, everyone was afraid and sadly many innocent people were wrongfully accused of being terrorists
This episode mirrors the patriot act in the real world
Homefront/Paradise lost was meant to be the season 4 premiere before the network told them to do a soft relaunch with the Klingon war and bringing Worf on. Instead its the Improbable Cause/Die is Cast of Season 4
Nobody tells him about the 43 episode arc in season 8.
Funny that Admiral Leyton's appearance in this made Robert Foxworth unavailable to reprise his role in Babylon 5, so they killed off his character off screen.
you will see siskos dad a few more times over the rest of the show
Hard to believe that this was made before 9/11
How many Changlings are there in the universe? Not sure we see an ocean of them in the Great Link on their home planet. Trillions or more perhaps.
One and many.
Sisko's father is gaslighting the hell out of his son with the arguments he is using against the security measures. Changlings are a fact of life in the Star Trek universe, so there is no point in pretending that they don't exist. The stubbornness and willful naivete of the old man are not admirable traits.
Fun fact that the list of captains loyal to Layton are all characters from Catch-22. Great novel, fantastic movie, shit series.
My favorite moment is when Sisko goes full Commanding Officer on poor Nog!
Remember when Picard plrd with Wesley Crusher to do the right thing when TNG had their Earth episode?
Sisko just went into Drill Sargent mode instead! 😜
I also love that Nog is a regular at Sisko's restaurant! I think Sisko's dad has a lot to teach the young cadet.
Speaking of Nog, he was looking pretty sharp in his cadet uniform...and Sisko was in a TNG uniform for this!
After DS9 i urge you to watch Babylon 5
How many Star Trek movies are out there for god's sake? Holy crap, dude.
This “freedom vs security” debate is so misunderstood.
Starfleet doesn’t need to impose martial law in order to secure the Federation! If Starfleet is tasked with defending Federation space from external threats, and Starfleet Security stops unauthorized people from getting into sensitive spaces where even Starfleet officers without “need to know” access aren’t permitted, then the military doesn’t need to become the domestic police.
Starfleet has allowed the Cardassians, the Borg, and the Dominion through their porous borders, their lax security, and their only answer is to punish its citizens with humiliating treaties.
Respect my autharitah
