"Celtic and Irish music is like a heart hug"
This man is a genius
Whoa I read your comment literally as he said it. Cool
I'm currently reading a book on Celtic music and that's literally what it says, just with longer (and more) words
Ever watched a cartoon saloon movie? (They got lots of Celtic music)
So is she
Yes, yes he is.
You have no idea how badly I want an entire album of pop covers like this.
I would buy that in a heartbeat lol
I would definitely buy it
Does she have videos of just this
Add me to this for the reminder
Check hildegard von blingin's channel, it's basically all a lot like this.
The pure joy from Cullen when he was clapping to this song was all the serotonin I needed 😍
Holy shit that blinding lights is straight fire. Can we have full version please? I need to destroy the replay button kindly.
Agreed!!!
Yes
It is really cool ! Another cool (metal) version is by Feuerschwanz
Cullen's happy clapping absolutely sent me.
He is such a pure bean.
He plays 30 instruments but is the most enthusiastic about his clapping. He just loves it all.
BRO. This was an unreasonable amount of fun!! Thank you again for inviting me along and for your amazing work and collaboration!! Happy St Paddy’s day! 💚☘️
It was a joy learning so much about Irish music! Thank you so much!
Aah! Cullen! I was so excited to see you on Melinda's channel! I was all "omg I know someone famous!" Lol
But seriously, I miss your genius face. It's so great to watch you geek out over art. Glad to see you're still doing so well.
You look so sad while playing all those instruments. (not) :-)
Do you know who Ali Spagnola is?
Loved watching you play. I noticed you hold your bodhran tipper pretty far back. If you choke up a little you'll have an easier time hitting triplets.
Yooooo!! It's so cool seeing you pop up on my UA-cam recommended after meeting you at A3!!! Your playing amazes me every time I hear it!!!
As an Australian tourist in Ireland some twenty years ago, I happened upon the village of Doolin, in County Clare after a sightseeing visit to the breathtaking Cliffs of Moher. The village was so captivating that I decided to stay the night at a b & b and see what the pubs could offer for a meal and some entertainment. As I was strolling down the footpath, trying to decide which pub to choose, I heard some traditional Irish music start up in one of them. I was astonished to hear an accompaniment from a didgeridoo, a traditional Australian aboriginal instrument so far out of its element as to make me wonder if I was imagining it! Of course I had to go in and investigate and, sure enough, it was a genuine didg and it melded so pleasingly well with the Irish music that I stayed until closing to drink it all in........er, in more ways than one!!
A wild guess would make that O'Connor's... one of the world's great pubs 🍻
I mean, as long as they can play along to the song somehow, the instrument is welcome. It's part of the fun.

5:23 Blinding Lights by The Weekend
7:05 Levitating by Dua Lipa (Slide version)
8:29 Levitating by Dua Lipa (Slow Reel version)
Thank you so much for all the amazing content! You two are good eggs.
Thank you! RoseLover1995 for this! Good Eggs indeed! I appreciate being able to skip to the music here.

is it weird I never heard not a single one of these in the original?
loved the Irish versions though...

As an irish girl who grew up being forced to learn the tin whistle in primary school, I can say I'm very proud and happy st paddy's day
wowwww the nostagia just came like a wave, brooooooooooooo
Ah I remember me and the lads used to hum while playing the tin whistle, that was some great craic
Lol I used to go to primary school in Dublin but then I moved to a different place so I never played the tin whistle
Me too! Haha memories!
It was the recorder for me
Hmm, I was told that the difference between a violin and a fiddle is that you don’t spill beer on a violin. 😜
It’s really awesome to hear other traditional northern but not Irish instruments join in on an Irish jam session, especially nyckelharpa or hurdy-gurdy. And they can definitely keep up!
Amazing adaptions, especially the slide jig and the march!!
I was told the same thing
You need tone beer though. I heard you get deepest timbre with Guinness ;)
@@jamessan3404 True that!
@@patricialyons491 and sad part is I ain't even joking too much. Beer does lower voice after all.
I'm unfamiliar with all of the originals, but the Irish versions made me happy--they're so cheery and cozy :)

5:24 - Blinding lights

Did you listen to a lot of folk music at home?

5:50: If only everyone were having as much fun as that clapping guy! xD

LOVE IT!
I am not Irish, not even of Irish descent, and have never even been to Ireland. Still, the first music I ever listened to on a regular basis - apart from kids music in my own language - was Celtic music, and I have been in love with Irish dance music ever since I first heard the theme songs from Riverdance and The Lord of the Dance.
As an Irish person who’s grown up with this style of music almost exclusively, this is way more perfect then it should be
Music nerds are the best aren't they?
@@adamaris1760 no, I'm a music nerd and this video gave me anxiety. Apparently Irish people have their own definitions for music terms and it traumatized me.
@@christopherparks2987 sorry to hear that 😅
@@christopherparks2987 I guess the Irish just don't like standard terminology I'm an Irish dancer there are no standardized names for the moves, each different country, state, and school calls them different things lol
same its great!! ive been learning the fiddle since I was 6, and my family always had sessions! its so cool to see
My bird danced along and honestly that’s a super high compliment due to her usually screaming at my music choices
The fact that you went into the WHY and then blew us away with it even still...goosebumps.
Clapping Cullen is my favorite vibe, and now I have to listen to hours of jigs and reels, thank you very much. ^-^
The playing and improv was awesome. The comedic timing of the edits made me giddy, and I actually laughed aloud at, "'We could go full 12/8, but I don't think we should. We'll keep it at-- or, maybe...?' 'What would it sound like in 12/8?' *Cuts to an elaborate and fleshed-out full accompaniment*."
Otherwise, I only knew of "Blinding Lights" so I don't know the context on the rest, but it sounded fun either way! Thanks for the edu-tainment!
as a scottish musician who really enjoys both scottish and Irish traditional music, be it folk, ceilidh or otherwise, it's really fun to listen closely and get to know the subtle differences between the two, and appreciate the similarities.
As an irish lad I agree
I was expecting the Aire to be more Strathspey-like, after it being described as the slow one, but they're still very different!
Agreed! Irish and Scottish Gaelic tunes have always sounded slightly musically different to me but I'm not enough of a musician to figure out exactly how, I'd love to see more on the similarities and differences. Both are so lovely.
THIS WAS WAY TOO FUN enjoy :D. And go follow Cullen!! vm.tiktok.com/ZMeBq8Bot/
Also I just released a new single!!! Check it out!!! ua-cam.com/video/p3UEL_9aawQ/v-deo.html
Well done - tunes 2 & 3 were surprisingly good so why not do a full video and send it to Dua - you never know she might!
Happy St Patrick’s Day! 🍀
I hope the "special announcements" have got something to do with your new album! I love listening to your original music and I need new songs to learn by heart xD
Yay, a new song!
Can we have a full cover of Blinding Lights? I love Irish Jigs!
That second version of Duo Lipa was 🔥
The last one was the best I think. Sounded so much like the actual song, yet beautifully Irish at the same time
I would actually 100% buy an album of you two covering pop songs
❤❤❤
The irish version of levitating gives me so much energy i can't even stop my self from smiling . Thank you malinda🙏🥰
You lass are a national treasure and very talented! I wish more people "felt" music the way you do. Thank you so much for bringing the love of such a wonderful genre to a world-wide stage.
My three years of Irish step dance was coming out strong, and then that reel had me doing overs. Beautifully done, both of you!
I put the lyrics to “Blinding Lights” through Google Translate, and it became “The Light Is On” when translated too many times.

Hey you two, I absolutely love this video. I'm born and raised Irish, and I'm so impressed by your accurate knowledge. I was bathed in Irish music all my life. Hey public, believe everything Melinda says here. It's all true.
A "heart hug"? Yes, that's what it is.
Happ SP day, y'all🙂👍☘🇮🇪
Damn, that Blinding Lights cover took a hell of a lot of effort... Well done! Awesome work!!
Please release full versions of these, because these are so fun! you did a great job!
I love how happy Cullen is while clapping.
How is it that he plays a million instruments, but I can't stop enjoying his clapping the most!?
Its the beaming smile
Once you learn a few instruments, every further one becomes increasingly easy, so a person who plays 10 different things can probably expand into 30, and then further again, no problem. But a nice enthusiastic, on point clap? That can't be bought.
Because it's extra sassy ^^
Cullen clapping in Blinding Lights gives me so much LIFE! (5:35 he looks like a proud aunt at a recital)
*A heart hug.* That is exactly what I was needing right now. Just to get lost in some lovely music made by lovely people, because the world saw fit to remind me just how ugly humanity could be, but now it's also reaffirmed just how beautiful. Thank you both, truly.
Anyone else want full versions of these??

One of my favorite videos of yours, been lurking for a while and realized I haven't subbed. Gonna do it now.
Whats makes this sooo much fun to watch is just the genuine joy one sees in your faces while you are playing the different parts of the songs. Sooo good, thanks for that
I‘m a huge Ireland fan and fan of Irish music. This Video makes me happy! Its so great you guys keep this traditional music alive and share it with the world! Glad I came across your UA-cam account tonight! Can you please transfer more and whole songs into Irish aires, reels & jigs?? 💚💚💚
I literally grinned when Blinding Lights started. Holy crap that was awesome and needs to be a full cover that I would never stop listening to.
as someone who’s been doing Irish dance for over 10 years now, going through this pandemic without it, especially the March dance season is hard, I miss being so surrounded by the beautiful culture, and seeing so many people on the Internet make Irish tunes and music cool again really makes me happy, I love this music, keep it up!
Thank you. I was so tired and ready for bed but then watched this...loved Cullen's grin as he clapped! You both were like a ray of sunshine.
As an irish dancer myself i know that the songs can be boring and irritating. I love the fact that she can turn a boring treble reel and turn it into something amazing! 🍀🇮🇪
I adore all of his different facial expressions while he's playing the same song on different instruments and you know he's actually alone.
I'm not joking. I think it's bloody adorable!
okay but can we get a full version of that irish blinding lights? that was heavenly
this is WONDERFUL... my mom's family are irish immigrants and i grew up listening to & playing irish music and it really is just. the musical equivalent of comfort food
This is fantastic! Still waiting for full versions of these because I need that in my life
I can't be the only one who wants full versions of um... all of them?
Nup. You are not

As an Irish girl, I approve! You really know your stuff. I've been playing the Tin Whistle since I was 7 (11 years now) and I can hardly read sheet music still! I usually just learn by ear lol. Keep up the fantastic effort, and thank you for calling our music a "heart hug" - couldn't have worded it better myself!
I love how you can so obviously see the two of you having fun while you're working on this. My music theory background is severely lacking (I'm working on it, but its a sloooooow process) but it's fascinating hearing you dissect the songs and put them back together in new ways, especially the 4/4 vs 12/8 of Levitating.
Malinda: "what does it mean to sing or play in an irish way?"

I loved the March Slow Reel "Levitating" version! It was so much fun to listen to and gave me a "heart hug"
Well, never heard of any of those pop songs, so I wouldn't have any idea how they sounded before being performed with an Irish flair. That being said, they sound great!
Agreed -- Would have been nice if they had done it with pop songs that are more universally known -- Like "Sound of Silence" or "Dancing Queen" or something... Still, I enjoyed the Celtic arrangements they came up with!
look up those songs on youtube....
@@DaveLH Hahah they chose the biggest pop songs of the past year. Not their fault if you're a little out of touch! 😜
Haha I know right. That's so me. I'm just redescoving all the songs that were playing on the radio during my childhood when I didn't understand them (quite literally didn't know what they were singing a lot of the time). I feel quite proud of myself that I actually know popular songs... and then I remember they're not anymore and I know nothing about what's popular now. Haha ahh... my life.
@@TheDGomezzi Most people's musical knowledge ends with high school. Fact. 40 years from now you'll still be listening to today's music, which will be called "oldies", and YOU'LL be the one "out of touch". It's part of human existence.
This was so beautiful and brilliant. Loved it. 😍. You guys are absolutely amazing 👏 ❤️.
I didn't know I needed this in my life but seriously this video made me so happy. Learned so much and enjoyed both performers immensely. Also clapping is the weirdest "instrument" to make look cool and this guy nailed it. I could watch these two people play for hours and never get tired. Beautiful.

Levitating as an Irish Jig is everything!!! WOW! so good and so clever to do this !!! really well done you two!!!
I'm from Scotland and in our early High School music lessons, we were taught a lot about Scottish music. We had to compose a jig, a strathspey and a reel. It's so interesting to see the crossovers between traditional Scottish music and Irish music. Absolutely fascinating! We also had Scottish Ceilidh dancing in our P.E lessons and instead of a yearly Prom we had a Christmas Ceilidh. Never realised how cool it was until I met other people at uni who weren't from Scotland!
Absolutely in LOVE! This was so cool!
Heart hugs, YES! I loved thin video and could have watch many more hours of it! Fantastic!
The green glitches in the video at 3:36 are probably Malinda's attempts trying to Irishify the world! I see you, Malinda!!
IT's so good, to hear your music again :D. Great video as always and I find it quite ironic that in GTS usually Malinda "clones" herself, but here there is just 1 Malinda and like 20 Cullens all playing different instruments.
This is so wholesome and informative! So much effort and fun put into it!
