At any rate, many well-meaning Christians are misinterpreting this misapplying this verse. I hope this video provides a plausible interpretation to this debated verse.

After listening to you I wandered: why how you approached the teaching of Baptism which you rightly "acknowledged is a command" by JESUS but you went about other texts from the 'Acts of the Apostles' who were trying to live out that command: you were using their teachings and elevating it above the giver of the command. If we agree JESUS is God and he commands something aren't you more obliged to a Divine command than the 'exegesis of men' drawn from that command?

@Moon_ Phaser No where in Jesus' discussion with Nicodemus does Jesus mention Baptism. That is not a topic. To dive right into requating 'water' for baptism, is an incorrect one. Nicodemus could not get his head around 'being born again'. Nicodemus is an expert of the Old Testament covenants so Jesus here responds in ways that Nicodemus to understand. How can someone be born again? In the Old Testament, water is often a symbol for cleaning the body. It is both a physical clean for the Jews as well as Spiritual. Jesus talks of himself is the LIVING Water. To cleanse oneself of the dirt aka sin, how? REPENT. Repent and RECEIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT and you will be born again. Even after Jesus clearly explaining using terms and Old Coveneant Jew would understand and Nicodemus still did not understand it in verse 9, Jesus rebukes him in verse 10
10 Jesus answered him, “Are you the teacher of Israel and yet you do not understand these things?
Water and the Holy Spirit are not two separate things/events, they are ONE. How are we born again, we REPENT and the Holy Spirit regenerates us to be a New Creation.!!!

That night I wanted to do something I shouldn’t and said no within my mind and felt an addiction/stronghold break and leave my body, it told me its name as it left me. I’ve never struggled with that addiction since and that happened over 20 years ago. I would encourage all people to repent and be baptized if they believe that they should be. I think that unfortunately over time the importance of baptism has been watered down (yes, pun intended). The early church never saw baptism as an option. I think we should be careful in our discussions on baptism to not further degrade the importance of baptism. Whether or not baptism is essential for salvation the fact of the matter remains that it is clearly an essential step that people who believe in Christ and want to follow Him take. It was NEVER seen as optional in the New Testament. So I think we should be careful with passages like the thief on the cross because that was a special case and not the pattern we see in the New Testament. So in summary, whether or not it is essential for salvation, truth is it is NOT optional if you want to be a follower/disciple of Jesus , we must obey and trust Jesus fully while getting baptized, because He is our master. And servants do what their master says without asking too many questions. Hope this helps! Be blessed!!

@@noyb12345 Actually, his argument is rather weak. For instance, he quoted Acts 3:19 "Repent therefore, and turn again, that your sins may be blotted out" and he said that this verse PROVES that Baptism is not necessary for the forgiveness of sins simply because Peter DID NOT mention Baptism when he was talking about forgiveness in that verse. But he fails to realize that you can't say that something is UNNECESSARY simply because it is NOT MENTIONED.
For instance, John 3:16 says that it is by BELIEVING in Jesus that we have eternal LIFE. That verse DOESN'T MENTION the word "repentance". But does that mean that "repentance" is NOT NECESSARY for eternal life ? Ofcourse not. The Bible says: "Then to the gentiles God has granted REPENTANCE that leads to LIFE " (Acts 11:18). Or how about 2 Corinthians 7:10 which says that REPENTANCE leads to SALVATION. That verse DOESN'T MENTION anything about "believing" or "having faith" in Jesus Christ in order to receive salvation. But does that mean that "believing" is NOT NECESSARY for salvation ? Certainly not.
Here is my point: quoting Bible verses that talk about forgiveness of sin WITHOUT ever mentioning Baptism is NOT proof that Baptism is UNNECESSARY for the forgiveness of sin. Nowhere in Bible does Peter or any apostle explicitly say that "Baptism is not necessary for the forgiveness of sin". If they did so, then that would be definite PROOF that Baptism isn't necessary for the forgiveness of sin. But they never did so.

      @@jerome2642 indeed…
From what I see, JESUS hadn’t made baptism a command until he got ready to ascend back into heaven & commission the Apostle’s to go into all nations making disciples. Once JESUS commissioned them, he then made baptism a COMMAND (Mark 16:15). A good teacher on this topic is David Pawson. 4 Commands given to a person that is coming to Christ is
1)Repent 2)Believe on Jesus Christ 3)Be Baptized in Water 4)Be Filled with the Holy Spirit.
David Pawson talks about how, although chapter & verse numbers have been added to the Bible for our convenience, they’re dangerous because it makes it to where the Bible is taking out of context often & that’s DANGEROUS! I see exactly what he’s talking about based on what Allen Parr is doing in this video. Notice that Allen is using scriptures out of the Book of Acts to disprove the necessity of baptism but all throughout that same letter we see the Apostle’s COMMANDING people to be baptized(Acts 10 is one of many sections). We have to remember that Luke wrote the Letter of Acts to a man named Theophilus and it had no chapters and verses so Theophilus would not have come to the conclusion that Allen did especially after reading sections like Acts 8:36.
There are many people who never truly repented before and have been baptized & their baptism didn’t mean anything but for the truly repentant person that is placing faith in Christ, (according to the command of JESUS, right before ascending to heaven), they must get baptized. If we had each book of the Bible as letters without verse numbers, none of us would have ever started proof texting to make these types of points that Allen is making. Also, the baptism of a repentant person that is placing faith in JESUS, is not a work, the Holy Spirit is at work, not the person in & of themselves. How do we explain Acts 22:16, what Ananias said to Paul? Can we accuse Ananias of trying to get Paul to work for salvation? I don’t believe so, (JESUS LITERALLY sent Ananias to Paul) but the baptism of a truly repentant person that is placing faith in JESUS, must be the Spirit of grace (the Holy Spirit) at work.

New converts to Christianity were first baptized (with WATER) BEFORE the Holy Spirit came down upon them during the laying of hands (Acts 8:14 - 17; Acts 19:5 - 6). There was only ONE exceptional case in the New testament when people received the Holy Spirit BEFORE being baptized with water, and that was when the Gentiles were first accepted into the church (Acts 10:44 - 48). Salvation is not given at baptism or conversion, hence the many passages about how a Christian has to endure to the end to be saved. Evangelicals need to first learn what salvation is or when it is given before speaking on what is or isn't required. It's pretty obvious by their theology that they don't.

Just follow Christ! He showed us through His own actions how important being baptized is. I believe this verse is pointing to the Holy Spirit, that sometimes comes upon us when we're baptized. God showed us that in the gospels. When John baptized Christ, the heavens opened, the Holy Spirit came upon Christ, and God spoke. What an incredibly glorious moment in time! The Father, Son and Holy Spirit all on one place on earth!
I really wish we could stop arguing about these things. Just do as Christ did, follow His actions. It's really that simple.

YES IT DOES MEAN THAT! The Great Commission wasn't given until Jesus was ressurrected. The thief was caught between the dispensation of the Law and the dispensation of Grace, and had to die according to Roman law for his crimes. He asked for the Lord's forgiveness and was simply shown the mercy of the Lord because he couldn't come off of his cross, and because Jesus hadn't died yet. "For He sayeth to Moses, 'Iwill have compassion on whom I will have compassion. So it is not of him that willeth, nor of him who runneth, but of God that showeth mercy.' "Romans 9:15-18. The New Testament Church taught for more than 1900 years that water baptism saves our souls, but, approximately 50 years ago, lazy, money-grubbing, tv-and -radio, would-be, ministers started teaching that water baptism doesn't save our soul, but faith alone. You mean we had it all wrong for almost 2000 years? "Jesus answered, 'Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the spirit, he will not enter into the Kingdom of God.' " John 3:5.

Anytime someone is baptized they are baptized into Christ’s death and resurrection (Romans 6 explains this). Jesus hadn’t died or been resurrected at that point so why would He ask the thief to be baptized? And the thief was going to die within a few hours. Why would He ask the thief to be baptized?
Using Jesus’ response to the thief on the cross as our example of evangelizing the loss is not correct. Unless you only evangelize to people who are going to die within minutes of you sharing the gospel with them.
And we live after the cross. Jesus has died and resurrected and now people can put their faith in that and act on it through repentance and baptism. Acts 2:38 is a powerful response to a powerful gospel. The gospel is so intense and glorious and it deserves an intense response from us. We need to give everything and do whatever Christ commands us. Baptism is commanded, faith is commanded, repentance is commanded, belief is commanded, obeying is commanded. Let’s do it all with joyful hearts because of all He’s done for us!
It is after the cross and we aren’t going to die within the hour. We are not the thief on the cross. Let’s take each of Jesus’ commands and live them out. Amen.

I have watched the whole video and I do have a big respect for you, Mr. Allen Parr, but I do disagree. Solution No1 is the most logical one, because many other verses point out how the salvation in Christ is tied to a baptism:
    - John 3:5 "Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God."
    - Romans 6:3-4 "Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life."
    - Galatians 3:27 "For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ."
    - 1 Peter 3:21 "Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ"
    - Acts 22:16 "And now why do you wait? Rise and be baptized and wash away your sins, calling on his name."
    ...
As for Jesus' forgiving sins to people without baptism, yes, that was in effect during his ministry on Earth. (Matthew 9:6)
Furthermore, you pointed out that we're not saved by the works. Amen! But baptism is not work, it's a response, like repentance is. Then we could say "One doesn't have to believe, repent... It's all works!". Just few seconds later as you scoffed baptism as work, you quoted Acts 26:20 "that they should repent and turn to God and do works worthy of repentance"
Keep up great work promoting Christianity, point out sins, spread the Gospel! I really admire your work, but at some points I disagree with you.

Yes it does. John 3:5 and 1John 5:7-9. When the Lord made a covenant with Abraham who swore by his own holy name, he told Abraham to circumcise all males eight days or older as a sign of his covenant with him and his descendants. The works proceeded forward with Abraham’s faith. All throughout scripture it makes reference towards works proceeded by faith that God prepared for us in advance to do. It’s not that our own works earn us or that we achieve salvation, but rather, they are a sign of the covenant with the Lord and a believer being born again as a new creation. Jesus says specifically to Nicodemus that unless you are born of water and of the spirit, you cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That isn’t a figurative meaning, that is a commandment by Christ himself.

      (1) Those who try to use Mark 16:16 to teach that baptism is necessary for salvation commit a common but serious mistake that is sometimes called the Negative Inference Fallacy. This is the rule to follow: “If a statement is true, we cannot assume that all negations (or opposites) of that statement are also true." For example, the statement “a dog with brown spots is an animal” is true; however, the negative, “if a dog does not have brown spots, it is not an animal” is false. In the same way, “he who believes and is baptized will be saved” is true; however, the statement “he who believes but is not baptized will not be saved” is an unwarranted assumption. Yet this is exactly the assumption made by those who support baptismal regeneration.
      (2) 2 Corinthians 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.
This judgement is only for SAVED persons. This is to determine wether or not you will received heavenly rewards in a form of CROWNS 1 Corinthians 9:24-25.
Paul insists that all believers in Jesus will appear before the judgment seat of Christ when He returns to earth. Paul is clear in his letters that this judgment is not about salvation. Christ will not declare in that moment whether someone will go to heaven or hell. In no sense is this verse implying that that judgment, or the deeds it examines, are what decide someone's eternal fate. Salvation is a gift given to everyone who trusts in Christ. Paul's gospel is that the gift of salvation is "not by works" (Ephesians 2:8-9), or nobody could achieve it (Romans 3:23; 6:23).
      (3) Philippians 2:12 Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.
WORKOUT means ENHANCE. It does not mean to work in order to be saved. It simply means that SALVATION is already present but you need to enhance it by becoming fruitful or productive.
