www.ultralightflyer.com Dan Johnson talks to Greg Westberry of Westberry Manufacturing about the Thatcher CX -- 4 single seat experimental light sport aircraft and the soon to be released CX 5, during the EAA Sun N Fun convention held at Linder Regional Airport in Lakeland Florida.
Greg is producing kits for the Thatcher CX 4. He is also preparing kits for the Thatcher CX 5 a tandem seating two seat experimental aircraft. The kits that Greg is producing are manufactured using CNC equipment, with matched hole drilling for easy parts alignment.
This type of building process means that all of the holes are predrilled and all of the metal comes pre-bent. This means no jigs are needed to build the aircraft as the parts act as the jigs when they are clecoed together.
Building from plans using raw materials will take between 900 and 1000 hours to complete. Building from kits will cut this building time to more than half.
The Thatcher line of aircraft were been designed by Dave Thatcher for first time homebuilders, with no special tools or knowledge required.
Dave aircraft mechanic, designer and builder is in his 80's and has been involved in aviation since his youth. Both the Thatcher CX 4 and CX 5 are all metal aircraft powered by Volkswagen aircraft engine conversions.
Currently there are over 40 CX 4 aircraft flying with approximately another 50 in various stages of completion.

He should do very well if he has developed a matched hole kit for this. Gorgeous looking aircraft.. I wonder if he could develop an ultra light version to compete with that new high wing Merlin lite..

I contacted the gentleman your interviewing last year and he told me he is no longer producing any kit parts for CX4 or CX5. Has that changed?

no. this is a reload of an older video. there was a guy up in michigan? who was also starting to make parts, but I think he went silent in the last few months too. last I heard the engine mount, canopy and fiberglass parts were still being made by the people in the older lists.

I thought there were old pilots and hang glider pilots but no such think as old hang glider pilots.

A few of us have managed to make to old age. I have to admit though, thinking back, I've wondered, more than a few times, how did I make it this far. At a family reunion, almost tens years ago now, my cousin reminded me that I still had one of my "kites" up in the barn's loft. I'd completely forgotten about the thing. So we climbed up in the loft and swept about ½" of dust off of the canvas I had wrapped it in about 40 years earlier. We got it down, and out in the sun and unwrapped it. The mice had really done a job on the fabric, but there was still enough there to get a good idea of the shape and colors. We went ahead and set it up. I had forgotten just how minimal the early kites had been. Looking at some of the hardware and fittings, it was hard for me to admit that I had not only built the thing, but I had also flown it. Many times actually. I've launched myself under this thing from mountainsides, hundreds of feet above the ground. What in the world was I thinking? Putting my trust (faith?) in something that sketchy . . . How did I ever get to be this old?
