If you are new here I would like to invite you RIGHT NOW to go ahead and hit that SUBSCRIBE button and LIKE button and help me grow this channel to reach more people to get involved in Experimental, Light Sport and Ultralight Aviation! I appreciate you!
Wow! Right here in Pensacola! This is exciting. My best Navy buddy and I are looking for an Experimental to build. We've been seriously looking at RV-4s, but I love the local effort!
@@nuchbutter YES. Right here in Florida. I would give it a few months so they can get this flying and work out any bugs then take a drive and meet THE MAN in person. :-) Thanks for watching!
Thank you Mr. Thatcher for all of your contributions to Experimental Aviation! I hope more people try to follow in your footsteps! People like you are national treasures to me! Much Respect ✊
Agreed. He is a repeat offender building/designing now three(3) different aircraft and all available by plans. We need more people to enter this space and share some interesting designs we can all start building.
I met Dave at Sun n Fun years ago, a very knowledgeable gentleman and a pleasure to talk to. Always loved the CX-4, but like the 2 seats to share with friends. Thank you Dave for some beautiful planes that are affordable to build and maintain!
What a beautiful airplane!!!! Love seeing scratch builds, please keep us posted on developing stats on this aircraft
@J P Hey! Thanks for continuing to follow along. Yes... as soon as they conduct the flight test and have real hard numbers I will share for sure. Thank you for supporting!
Have followed the CX series for quite a while and am delighted to see the CX7. It looks fantastic. Holds beautiful form and proportion. The retro tail has always galvanised my attention and now there is a side by side version quite sure Mr Thatcher will get several licencing enquiries with a mind to manufacture. I wish him every success and look forward to seeing it in flight very soon.
It is a beautiful design and I think you have described it quite well. I think the shape and profile is highly desirable and could lead to many good things in the future. Thank you for taking the time to watch and for SUBSCRIBING here! I appreciate you!
I like the lines of the plane, its got all the right curves and the wings are neat looking
It does have an artist touch to it doesn't it? Thank you for watching!
Great video, and a very nice plane. Haven't seen Mr. Thatcher since Kit Plane did an article on the 4. Thanks again.
Old man still got it in him , what an amazing looking flying machine.
Thanks Brian, good episode.
Great interview with Dave, looking forward to more on the CX-7. It's nice to see good practical and affordable aircraft options out there, $100k+ builds aren't really an option for many of us.
Thanks for helping Dave and Glenn get the word out. The RevMaster is a solid motor for the power and price. The CX5 and CX7 are the most economical aircraft to build by far, I've done a lot of research on kits and various plans sets. If interest climbs I can see more people jumping in to offer parts of various things.
No Problem. My pleasure. This is actually the 3rd time I have been to site as I have been following along with this build over the past 2 years. First time capturing it to share though. I am very interested in seeing this design with the Revmaster and how it performs on only 85HP! Thank you for watching!
Exactly....the Revmaster is superb and the design of the plane is pure genius.

Awesome! Gotta have one.
Thanks for watching! I will do a follow up to share more info as soon as it gets into the air!
Heart and soul of homebuilt aircraft!
Exactly! Well said! Thank you for watching!
Yep, that where Dave and I live.
That’s the nicest scratch from plans plane to date. I think there’s a lot of planes that could have been just as nice but they’re not set up for scratch built.
Cool plane... Kinda along the same theme as a Hummel only with the ability to carry a passenger.
Agreed. Similar construction methods as well. Thank you for watching!
Nice job.👍🛩👍
Thank you! And thanks to David Thatcher. I appreciate you taking the time to watch and also support here!
That is a nice.looking plane.
I bet Dave loves to see/hear this! Thank you for commenting here and taking the time to watch!
Nice looking plane, good interview. Hope you could go taildragger but i like that tapered wing and cool tail. Plus like all things put modded out rotax witb 144hp! May catch an RV!
That is one of my questions for Dave Thatcher. What is the biggest and heaviest engine that this airframe can support. Maybe we can get the answer on my return trip after the CX7 flys. Soon! Thank you for watching!
Really nice, I’m in Cape Coral n love to come see it!
YES. Right here in Florida. I would give it a few months so they can get this flying and work out any bugs then take a drive and meet THE MAN in person. :-) Thanks for watching! I appreciate your support and engaging comments!
Come on by!! Call a day or two ahead and I will be sure and be available.

Mr. Thatcher, this is an awesome inspiration! I currently work with Mr. Bill Hudgens of the Stewart 51, redesigning all the wing structure and tooling to build the 70% scale P-51D (one of which is at the hangar at the FBO at Pensacola Regional). We used Turbine Parts Repair, Inc. up in Milton to do all the 5-axis machining of our rib form-blocks. Having just discovered your accomplishments, I think Pensacola is defiinitely on the rise as an aviation epicenter. Would love to come visit you, if you'd let a retired Navy rotor-head on your property!
Sounds amazing! Where is the final assembly or production of the kit S51 and P-51D taking place? I would love to schedule a visit. PM me on FB or send a message to info@experimentalaircraftchannel.com

Old school needs to see a Dr. After that I should be able to sit and listen to an interview with him..
I hope that You nor I never get old and experience health issues either. Life is short. Build FAST.
While I like the sort of Chipmunk like fuselage of the CX5 I suppose this ill be preferred by many.
Please do follow up I’m very interested.
Reminds me of the Cirrus SR22 or the G6.
A Light Sport version of it? Yes... I believe you are right. It does sort of share that "look." Thank you for watching! I appreciate you!
Any updates?
Should be a winner just like the CX-5 was.
When is the follow up video coming?
I am unsure. I told them to reach out to me after it has flown the the flight testing was complete. Things are moving a little slow around there these days as Dave isn't in the greatest of health...BUT still working at it as he can. He was actually crawling around on the floor buttoning up panels while I was preparing to film this. True hard worker. Thank you for watching!
Will you post stats on aircraft when test phase complete?
Absolutely. I wish I could have for this video... but honestly they didn't have them to share. Thank you for watching!
Absolutely !! AND unlike most plane producers I will post video so one can SEE the numbers.
How about a follow up on this aircraft?
Sure! Here YOU go! The latest: ua-cam.com/video/LDtpK1hQ1lE/v-deo.html
Just to help David and Glen there is a GoFundMe/thatcherCx7 to help so that the Cx7 gets done
i like the looks of it i think i dont know enough about that motor but its a great price very pretty with that paint job under the lights STUDENT PILOT ED
It is a really great looking design for sure. The engine "REVMASTER" has been around for decades and started out in the racing industry. Thank you for taking the time to watch! I really appreciate you. Thank you for SUBSCRIBING and following along!
Am I missing something here? What is the purpose of the gap in the wing? Or, is that just until the paint dries?
There is a panel that covers it that simply wasn't put on during the interview. It quite literally just came out of paint. They were still taking off the tape even when I arrived. I just wanted to make sure I was there to bring this to you FIRST! :-) So it is a but my fault that it wasn't 100% ready for a photo shoot. Thanks for watching!
The wing gag seals were, as you suggested, not ready for install after painting. Shoulda mentioned that.
It's been 7 months. Any update on this interesting design?
Timely question! I just got a text yesterday...the DAR is to inspect within the next week or so. I asked that they call me when done so I can do a return trip. Stay tuned! :-)
You selling Merch yet? I like to show my support for my UA-camrs by purchasing a T-shirt, Hoodie or hat in addition to donating on Patreon if UA-cam demonetizes content that I appreciate.
Merchandise? Ahhh.... VERY SOON. That is on my end of year or/2020 plans. I am in the process of rebuilding the website and setting up with some "quality" vendors for that. I have considered Patreon... but haven't taken that route just yet. Although I am needing to find a way to help cover the costs of going out to site all the time to obtain this content to share. Thank you for wanting to be supportive! I appreciate you!
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you for the thumbs up and your support!
Hi , I really like to ask you several questions about small Airplanes that using piston engine ? I kindly appreciate your assistance ? Thanks and hope not to bother you?
Sure. What questions do you have?
@@ExperimentalAircraftChannel hi, thanks for your reply to my request . One of my questions is: l have an engine with about (81 to 88 kw , 108 to 117 hp) with (142 to 158 Nm 105 to 116 lb. ft.) of torque at 4000 to 4500rpm. 1- is this engine suitable for VTOL flying practically? 2- what is the suitable three blades propeller for this engine to give the best thrust pull or push?.
thanks again and sure not to bother you.
@@asoskurek7970 108 to 117hp at 4000-45000 definitely would required a reduction unit/gear box to get your prop rpm down to a usable speed. I don't know the weight of your engine but you would want to be in a fairly light weight airframe (Light Sport Limits most likely) to have any sort of performance. But... there are MANY airframe's out there that will perform nicely with that HP rating. Really the limiting factor is the weight of the engine/gear box and utilizing a gear box to get the right prop. There are many props to choose from. The Luga Prop is becoming quite popular and one that has been around for a long while and well known is the Warp Drive.
@@ExperimentalAircraftChannel thanks for your reply I appreciate that, but can I continue with you from time to time and ask you questions ? I really want and wish to reach my dream ? Thanks and wish you all the best ?
Nice to sit back listen to two smart guys bullsh***ing bout cool stuff
Haha! Well OK then! Aviation is always COOL STUFF right? Thank you for taking the time to engage here and for watching!
VW FTW!
Tho i really wish people would stop painting the case
@@travisweide9071 YES. From what I understand the Revmaster is VW based but have designed/manufactured many of their own parts so now it is almost their own. I agree... I like more of a machined or cast look myself as well (when applicable). Thank you for watching!
Give that guy some water dammit🙆🏾♂️
SEXY!!!
HAHA! It's an AIRPLANE of course! Thanks for watching! I appreciate you!
ahem
What can I say... he is approaching 90 and still crawling under, around, over aircraft HE has designed and giving back to his aviation community. I think that allows for a little clearing of the throat to speak to us about aircraft. He would be one of the coolest Grandfathers ever in my book. Hope you enjoyed this episode and are encouraged to go after your dreams and also to get into aircraft building yourself.
At 3:13.....He says he's more into Building Planes then Flying Them......I guess he means he'll let someone else do the CRASHING......
Truly....there seems to be a more defined group of "Builders" or "Flyers." And some people simply enjoy the creation, fabrication, bringing to life new projects such as aircraft. Other may not have the patience or share that passion and would rather fly the airplane. I personally am a good mix of both...but I do lean more toward the building because it is so fascinating. I honestly do not think he is able to fly any longer at his age. Unfortunately.
To my knowledge none have crashed yet and we have a bout 600 sets of plans out for the CX4, 200 for the CX5. Dave has flown the CX4 quite a bit.....just not lately.

I’m retired from the military and I’m all about Experimental Aviation. I have some free time. How can I help your grow your channel? I can be the camera man! Ugly dudes stand behind the camera, ha!
I would love to just stay behind the camera! But then now one would ever get to know me I suppose. How can you help? I guess just keep watching and engaging here and share these videos with your friends on social media etc. Thank you for commenting here and watching!
I Really like all the HACKING THREW OUT the Video.
I hope that You nor I never get old and experience health issues either. Life is short. Build FAST.
..just seems like a knock off of a Vans. Sure, there are just enough differences to says its not an exact copy....but..... are there?
You are right it like a Van's. Both are made of aluminum! Otherwise, this is strictly from the mind of Dave Thatcher.
Hahaha good one
It's like Van's except for two very significant things: It's scratch built, and probably 1/3 the price finished. OK, one more thing, it's not as fast as an RV-7, but you give some, and you get some. But a knock-off? Not at all.
Well... Van's are typically (and mostly) all made from 2024. Thatcher is 6061-T6. Van's is mostly SOLID AN riveted. Thatcher is all POP rivet except for the spar etc. Van's is typically 150mph-200mph. Thatcher is around 100mph-120mph (I believe). Van's has a "Hershey Bar Square Wing." Thatcher has a "Tapered Wing." and a nostalgic tail. Van's has flaps. Thatcher has a speed brake on the belly. I think there are a few others to mention but...it is very different. Thank you for watching and learning about Experimental, Light Sport and Ultralight Aviation. I appreciate your engagement here!
@@Tedxdx Well said. Thank you for watching! And being supportive!
