Trail Running in Puerto Vallarta on the Boca de Tomatlán Trail

- Puerto Vallarta is not exactly known for trail running. But just 25 kms to the South lies a quaint fishing village called Boca de Tomatlan. From there begins a 9 km coastal trail which passes by the popular boat-access-only Playa Las Animas on the way to Quimixto, and on to Quimixto Falls.
I had been to Vallarta many times over the years, but it wasn’t until a visit in 2018 that I discovered this little gem that has since become my favourite local trail.

Are you curious about what happened to to the dog? Find out, along with photos and a description of the route at: jeffpelletier.com/trail-running-in-puerto-vallarta-boca-de-tamatlan-trail-to-quimixto-falls/
I lived in Vallarta for 3 years, lots of great trails to run but most of them are off the beaten path. This is such a beautiful trail to run or hike. Thanks for sharing, all the memories flooded back in as I watched along.
Nice one. And lucky you to find such a good trail dog! Thanks
We called him "Pedro". Best day ever.
Oh, I'm gonna spend my next friday evening watching your vids :)
Let me know what you think!
I will.
This one was really cool. I liked the dog ofcourse. I also had adventures with hiking dogs in different parts of the world. They always seem to be more about the hike than the hiker in the end :)
What an awesome way to make a new trail friend 🤙🏼
Great video, you guys took the dog home with you right? 😅 It seemed a perfect fit, he was so joyous around you 😃. Thank you for sharing your passion, it's so inspiring!
We definitely thought about it, but he took off! I was looking for him the following year when I returned to the trail, but no luck.
I’m stoked to run here! Thanks for the video
Eyyy good video, see you in October 2022 in PV for the Puerto Vallarta by UTMB (100 miles, 100Km, 55Km)
May this New Year be special in every way… bringing you the gift of love and excitement. ❤️
🤗😘Look forward to hearing from you!👼🌸💐😊
Love that trail! I have met two different dogs at the spot you met yours. It's a wonderful run!
Very cool! Every time I visit, I think how nice it would be to stay at one of those little boat access-only resorts.
Awesome video! Well done.
Thanks Brice!
I’m from PV, currently enjoying the trails in Cabo San Lucas, but never went to that trail.
I’d definitely recommend it next time you’re in town! Are there a lot of trails around Cabo?
Nice short film! Enjoyed it!
Thanks Josh, glad you enjoyed!
Found your channel when you did the trail in Kauai, love the content!
@Sean McCabe awesome, thanks guys. I've got a lot of back-logged videos I hope to finally complete in the next month or two, so stay tuned!
Great video! Looks like nice trail. I googled trail running in Puerto Vallarta this one came up. Will definitely do this one later this month. Curious where the UTMB trails are located. Wouldn’t mind getting a run there as well.
Thanks Steve. I’m curious about that new UTMB route myself, I’ll have to do some research.
Hi there, just a side note, the town is called Boca de Tomatlán (an "o" instead of the "a" you used). I did part of this trail walking you ran it!! Wow :-) . I like the voice sound quality, if possible, could you tell me what sound recording setup did you use for this video's voiceover (mic, etc.)?
Thanks for the correction!
I use the Audio-Technical AT2020 USB microphone for my voice-overs. The key is to film in a sound dampened room, like a walk-in closet full of clothes, and to use a ‘pop filter’.
@@JeffPelletier I saw you have the name correct in your blog post, so you already knew ;-) You are right, damping reflections is key, didn't think of that, duh :-). Will try it out next time and I def need to get a good mic. Thanks for replying and taking the time. Greetings from Toronto :-)
Great video! Have you found any other good trails in the area or does this connect to more?
This is pretty much all I’ve found, and I’m not sure if the trail continues any further along the coast or not. I’ll have to explore more next time I’m there!
Hey Brandon, there are many more in the area, at least a bit further north. I've found several starting from Bucerias and La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, and there is of course monkey trail to do halfway to Sayulita. They vary in length (most I've done is 25 km but there's room for lots more). The rainy season also affects the quality of the trail, but so far the one's leaving Bucerias have held up pretty well and the rainy season is almost over).
@@JeffPelletier See my response to Brandon :)
Anyone know approximate cost of an Uber to Boca de Tomatlan. We'll be in PV next week.
did you buy food for the dog?
Actually, my plan was to buy the dog a steak back at Playas Las Animas, but he ran off with another group of hikers before we made it back 😞.
