It was the most beautiful car in WRC. I know- group B, Delta S4-love her, it's The Queen- but Subie from 90s it's the best. So elegant and efficient at the same time.
The sound of the waste gate chattering on a scooby flat 4 is as iconic in rallying as the scream of a Ford BDA or the rasp of a Stratos, for me. Spent many a happy hour in stages waiting for that noise. It's almost music, thank you.
Precious machines from a not so distant Rally Era. I grew watching their performances on the roads of the most different Rally sceneries all across European countries. ❤ Kind regards from Figueira da Foz, Portugal. ✨🏖️🏆
Another great find Amjayes! My fave shape of all the Impreza WRC and arguably one of the most iconic modern rally cars. Good work, keep the vidoes coming!
Not true. Just partially. First of all, the car has to be set up for grip driving. And on slippery tarmac, it is not faster to go full grip with these cars. There were testing done (full snow) But ye, nasty great angle slides loose time and speed.
The Drift Style was the way of thinking back then and it certainly was spectacular and much better to watch but Loeb certainly changed the game. The only old schooler to really give him a challenge was Solberg but then the Subaru was just never good enough in that era. I've had one of these Subaru's for 14 years (road car version) as a daily, still love driving it every time!
Loeb drive cars full of stupid elettronic help.. against mediocre drivers like villagra Duval Wilson rautenback pasonen atkinson ecc not the same pressure like driver against Kankkunen makinen McRae Sainz burns auriol ecc.. they have an aggressive driving style not God for car with paddle shift and the elettronic help like Loeb have.. if Loeb drive with a gr B or a br A car without eletronic help and against Kankkunen makinen McRae Sainz burns auriol Vatanen Rohrl ecc for sure he dont win 9 titles..
It's the ALS, or the Anti Lag System. It stops the Turbo having a delay when the driver takes their foot off the accelerator and then flooring it again, which when you have a 2 liter engine producing this kind of power, is really important.
Смотрю и радуюсь, в поворотах машина веером, пилот явно кайфует. И сравниваю с нынешним врц, траектории идеальные, скучные, пилот как робот, явно ходит на работу. Эх, время, золотая эра.
The tires are skinny to allow the cars to slice through the snow easier, the reduced resistance allows you to travel through corners quicker. You sacrifice straight line speed in order to achieve this but often snow and ice stages have very few straights, so generally the teams will go for the thinner tires. Obviously teams have both wider snow tires and skinny ones and the drivers and engineers make the call together after a few test runs of the event.
This Impreza 22b, Lancer Evo 5/6 and Celica St185. Oh boy the memories, and still the sexiest rally cars to me 😍 And always going to be! Rally is only going downward's, hybrid c..p coming, and cars look like a boxes with flips and flaps all around.. No eyecandy insight.
Back when rallying was good to watch. Have no interest these days. Can't even recognize the cars. All the drivers from that era were spectacular. Burns, mcrae, ericson, sainz, gronholm, makkinen, kankuhnen, delecour, Vatinen, rovenpara, solberg, Bourne.
rotaxmax3 Nope, it is in fact anti-lag. Look at Higgins' and Pastrana's cars, they chirp. Top Gear even explained the chirping on the Prodrive P-2 was the ALS.
@QuertrGTRR Its not a blow off valve. These cars run without a BOV as it would negate the effect of the ALS. The "twittering" noise you hear is air flowing the wrong way through the turbo.
Well I started in a 1969 Mini Cooper with nothing really done to it beyond taking excess weight out. You go to a local meet on a closed road, pay the fee and you get in. It varies from place to place, I've heard in America they have clubs that set up deals with the council to close a road off for the event and you have to be a part of the club to participate. But I only know how things worked in my town which was rather casual as far as I can tell. But to put it simply, Yes. That's how it works
No, those are different. To drive a F1 is about pushing the limits, concentrating and train a lot to do the best lap time. Drive a Rally car is all about big concentration, reflex, and skills.
@97GSXsilver U'r wrong in the whole line. In rally it's not used "killed the turbo",like (I guess ) by u'r street racing, cause that is just a part, that needs to be replaced sometimes:) And if we talk about this car, it does not have/use BOV, but the squeeking sound u hear is "wastegate" chatter (external wastegate). And that is not because of antilag sistems, that race car use. There is a lot of pages, that explain this stuf, read them.
@97GSXsilver Rallycars can`t use DV because of antilag . That "giggling, Wastegate chatter, CHIRPING, name it.. " sound comes when throttle valve is closed , pressure hits it and returns to turbo . on wikipedia... /Wastegate (Wastegate chatter myth) on wikipedia... /Turbocharger
@tbtstt It makes sence and I can see why parts are not as important as times for the Championship. I appreicate all the info you all have shown me. Thankyou and I will take what I have learned and try to expand my info on cars and try to use what I have learned and apply it to applications where it makes sence to do so.
@frigofflayhey this car doesn't have a blow off valve!! The sound you are hearing is compressor surge! When the compressed air is trying to work it's way back through the charge pipes and back out through the compressor wheel on the turbo!!! And it does this because it doesn't have a blowoff valve.
@xtrmbeast No I have not been or driven a rally car but I know enough about turbos to say that the turbo in the car can last when taken care of. I own two turboed vehicals, I race one and daily drive the other. How many turbos have you killed? I haven't had one die on me. I have had compressor surge before and it does not help spool time nor does it add HP a new bov is very much needed. It could also be that one of the lines on the bov that has wiggled its way off the bov.
@secondhandnews1 It would save some time and money, turbos are not cheep nor are they the easyest to replace. I would replace a BOV rather than a turbo any day of the week.
Np, I actually wasn't sure whether or not to answer you because your comment was so long ago but I figured if other people see it they might learn something too. I used to be an AM rally driver so, I had to learn these things =P
I love rally too, I'm a Finn. But that doesn't mean that best rally drivers would be capable just jump to an F1 car and win races... F1 drivers have 20+ years experience track cars and you think it would take only under 1000 laps (winter testing) and after that rally drivers would be on the same level? That's just crazy. And F1 bosses are always being very very very polite. As you remember what Ferrari said about Valentino Rossi, etc.
It was the most beautiful car in WRC. I know- group B, Delta S4-love her, it's The Queen- but Subie from 90s it's the best. So elegant and efficient at the same time.

My all-time favourite car..
Subaru Impreza WRC, the best rally car ever!
The Delta Integrale is probably the rightful owner of that title but if it were any other car, it'd have to be the Subaru.

i know grip style driving is fast, like loeb's driving style.
but, i always love watching drift driving style, like Mcrae, like Burns, Like Mäkinen.
how can you grip on rally? lol
Not true. Just partially.
First of all, the car has to be set up for grip driving.
And on slippery tarmac, it is not faster to go full grip with these cars. There were testing done (full snow)
But ye, nasty great angle slides loose time and speed.
That's not true. Not even Loeb drives full grip. When the grip is low, only masterful weight shifting can help and that is done by sliding the car.
The Drift Style was the way of thinking back then and it certainly was spectacular and much better to watch but Loeb certainly changed the game. The only old schooler to really give him a challenge was Solberg but then the Subaru was just never good enough in that era. Dolphin noise is the waste gate chatter. Not antilag. Antilag is the popping and back fire noises
No, those are different. To drive a F1 is about pushing the limits, concentrating and train a lot to do the best lap time.
Drive a Rally car is all about big concentration, reflex, and skills.
I have a question. Why are the tires so skinny? I do know that snow tires are special but I didn't know they were little.
@nos97 Thats correct, its air flowing through the turbo the wrong way (i.e. back through the compressor section of the turbo).
