I'm an Evo (7) guy. The other day I saw a Subaru Impreza STi in almost the same shade of white as mine and we both looked at each other excitedly and smiled and waved like two boys with the same toys. I love camaraderie in Japanese car community.
Subi fan here. The EVO is not standard. The larger diameter exhaust, assuming its a turbo back system, means it has less backpressure. This allows more boost, and so more power than standard. I know this, because I had this same experience on my own car at the time, the 22B, which I ran in both modified, and unmodified tune, over 7 years. Which brings me to my next point. When the Mak was introduced, the logical competitor for it at the time was the 22b. Why are we seeing the P1 here???
Saying these cars have “280hp” is an inside joke . You know what else had 280hp ? Every car made in Japan during this period including the GTR and Supra .
In the late 1980s, the number of road fatalities surged. Therefore, the Ministry of Transport, which had been watching the horsepower competition of automobiles until now, also requested Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association(JAMA) to regulate horsepower. JAMA has set the upper limit of 280 hp, which is the self-regulation made by Nissan, because setting a value lower than the horsepower of products already on the market will force the specification to be changed. Since then, JDM cars equipped with an engine of 280 hp or more are no longer type-approved. However, manufacturers such as NISMO and STI, which are not members of the JAMA, have released vehicles(Nismo 400R, Impreza S202) with a maximum output of 280 hp or more, and these were treated as modified vehicles and were not subject to the regulations. That's because why '80~'00's cars have 280hp.

The TME is some of the most beautiful cars ever produced! Double spoilers and integrated front "cannards". The pinnacle of rally homologation, a description not far from the truth considering it WAS the last car produced by Mitsubishi for homologation. It is also matched and tied with the 22B for similar reasons.

Seems a bit disingenuous, the mitsubishi won the drivers championship 4 times in a row, the subaru won only 1 during these 2 cars respective periods. The subaru won more constructors championships at that time over mitsubishi. But to say one is more or less superior outside of your own personal opinion on style seems a bit off the mark.

And yes given the age, wear and tear, and tolerances it’s probably banging off the limitor closer to 180KPH VS 193KPH, totally reasonable.

On these manual challenges you should switch cars so we can see for sure if it was a *good* gear change or not
The Evo is quicker than the Scooby and, over the years, the equivalent Evos ALWAYS beat the Imprezas in roadtests too. The Evo just always seems to be the better around car, though both are SUPERB and I'd very, very happily own either!
Quicker off than line at least?
🤯 Oh my god I haven’t been this excited for a video for a while!! Thank you for making this video AND having Yianni!! 😄🍻
I would have loved a driver change for the drag race :) Could've been interesting.
Would have been exactly the same
@@pb6198 yup. Maybe 2025.
Yea for sure! Matt didn't launch it properly 🤣
@@subaru4life936 keep coping
@@pb6198 suby still pulls away in roll race and has better brakes 🤣
This gives me soo many memories from playing any type of race games when I was a little kid, thanks for always bringing the best content!!
telling me Yianni actually managed to do a drag race and not "Bog down" on launch...wow I'm impressed...and in a manual car too!!
He definitely bogged down in the Evo. To get either to launch properly you need to slip the clutch.
@@DanRClio AWD cars are notoriously difficult to launch properly. Needs an utter lack of mechanical sympathy to get these off without bogging down. 5500rpm launch for mine, and that is with timing retard launch control which allows me to build up to 5psi of boost at launch. Snapping axles and shattering centre differentials always a possibility. I actually drive through the water box before launch, to get some tire slip.
@@4G63TDSM yep having owned the Impreza I know exactly what they’re like. Not really fair on the owners to launch them too hard off the line
Happy to offer my car to Race..
Two amazing cars! Nice dragrace Matt!
There is generation of men who followed rallying wanted one or the other of those cars. Influenced by the legendary C McRae and T Makkinen.
It didn’t get any better than that, that was the pinnacle of the sport of rallying!
Epic! More stuff like this between old rivals.
I’ve been waiting so long for this race!🙏🏼
Me too, Stan Vos. Especially with this classic JDM cars racing each other.
Two legendary cars and two legendary presenters❤️🔥
More classic races like this please. 80’s vs 90’s & 90’s vs 00’s 👍
We would like to see more EVO’s and Imprezza’s drag race please :))
Yeah, well I'd like to see idiots stop putting apostrophes in plurals.
More fun manual cars from the 90's, please! Like the Fiat Coupé, Opel Calibra, Opel Tigra, Mazda MX3, Honda CRX...
I remember test driving a standard EVO5 GSR back in the late 90s. What an absolutely amazing chassis. Still a favourite car to this day. The EVO6 Makkinen edition must be sublime.👍👍👍
Owned a P1 for 20 years. Loved it & would still prefer it because of the looks.
I feel as though I would have been fairer if you guys used a 22b against the TM Evo
This just makes the whole Evo vs Yaris GR and E46 M3 vs Yaris GR result more suspect. Mid to High 13s are more in line with what to expect from the Evo, P1, Yaris GR, M3 E46... The 12.5 Yaris GR Results are just way too fast to be stock.
Yes I thought exactly the same, no way they run 12.5 stock
Mid 13 more like it !!!!
So can someone tell me why the big difference in times then ?
Agreed. The autocar figure was 13.8 sec 2 up on a damp track..12.5 is impossible if it's stock.
I've been saying this for quite a while. Either they messed up clocking them or they were seriously modified. Though I'd say the Japanese Yaris GR might come close to under 13 seconds.
It's all down to how aggressive a launch you give it.
@@grahamhaynes7658 you can launch it however aggressively you want, but the stock power on a Yaris GR even with the low weight is not Mid 12s capable. All the other results aside from Carwow.
I wish Mitsubishi can go back to making icon cars like these instead of those crappy cars now
Lol if they kept making cars like the Evo and such they would be all hybrid/EVs and then you would all be complaining. Better that Mitsubishi let the Evo go off with a bang rather then letting it live out to be a sad EV 'performance sedan'.
@@nanan_hello imagine if R36GTR vs Impreza 1999 in a drag race.
@@nanan_hello first off my guy I have a Evo 10 and looking for a Evo 9. I'm not one of those people that just talk cars, yes I understand they would of had to made it a hybrid/electric all I'm saying is they could of at least give us a Evo 11 the big hoorah before everything goes fully electric
@@michaeljordan7733 There is a reason why there is the Evo X FE, final edition Evo, so no going back now, they even stopped making the lancer too. Also think of how they would style the Evo XI, not sure how it would come out looking. They definitely won't be going back to CT9A or CZ4A styling, no way with the CP9A or CN9A too, too minimal for what they have now other than the mirage, but the thing looks like a bean if I'm going to be honest. I'm planning on getting an Evo 4 soon too. It would really be a surprise if they did but just with the things I have presented, I don't think it would be a good outcome.
@@nanan_hello true but it's the same thing I was thinking about the mercedes gull wing doors. The last black series had it and I think they should of had it on the latest black series too
the best drag race ever on carwow.. you've made it in life matt
Those "nose dives" during gear changes suggest that you've been accustomed to thumb/paddle shifters so bad that you've forgotten how to properly flick the clutch and match the throttle at the same time
Imagine some Ken block cars or a colab with him some day that would be sick
Mat: "Good gear change"
Yianni: "His gear change is rubbish"
LOL
The drag race we all waiting for is a bicycle race between Yanni and Matt
So no one thought to swap Drivers or would that have been too big a blow for Mattson's Ego?
We need more of these nostalgic races!
I love so much these two lines (especially the Evo V from the Mitsubishi side and the GDB from the Subaru side). I hope one day I can buy the Evo V GSR
I cannot believe it!!!!! One of the best rally cars!!! You simply are the best channel!!! Evo for the win!
Really miss when these were the top rally cars. They had soul, looked amazing to drive & they all looked unique. Now it's just a couple different brands that look almost identical & lack most things that made rally so enjoyable.
+ the cars now look almost nothing like their non-rally real life counterparts, the cars you could buy back then were quite close to their rally versions
More rally content please. These cars do more for me than any supercar
These cars were common (not anymore) in New Zealand when I was in my late teens, the Evo was always a touch faster but I always found the WRX a more entertaining drive
did you guys double clutch at any point...?? it seemed like it was jerking in the middle after the gear changes
This is my favorite type of drag race. Old manual sport cars. Loved it
two of my favourite cars in a race, absolutely loved this
An off-road test between these would be 🔥🔥
More like a gravel road or loose surface, not really offroad.
@@spicysnowman8886 - Exactly, more like a gravel rally stage or something similar.
You guys have got to stop putting a low pass filter on the engine sounds. I get it’s for wind removal, but it removes all the character of the sound 😩
In the drag race, swap drivers to find out if it is the driver or the car!
What a couple of legendary cars, a great video. You've really knocked it out of of the park here 💪
Matt!!! love these matchups! Old school cars that had soul and set the precedent for the techno machines of today. No soft limiters here😎
Love these races... Keep em coming kids!

[Race between] _Ferrari F8 Tributo Novitec_ VS _Porsche 992 turbo s_
More of this sort of thing, please Matt!
Truly incredible. An era that can't be beaten!
Any other era can beat it
Making me miss my old Evo VI. Great to see these two competing here.
Now This is a race I always wanted to see.
Who thinks the WRX would of won the drag race if Yianni was in it? 😂
No it wouldnt

@@bosstowndynamics5488 just a joke mate
As a past owner of a GC8 STi, I can definitely say dropping the clutch is the least effective method of launching these cars 😅
How is that? 5 500 rpms and drop the clutch, nah?
@@goitsumoto nah. You see it in this video too. It bogs down and chokes like the last working toilet at a music festival
never had any problems with this. Except for frying the clutch in no time
@@goitsumoto were you running bigger power figures? With standard power figures and most uprated sport clutches I used, it would bog down to near the bottom of the RPM range - before the turbo would begin to be effective.
Slipping the clutch about 50% and fully releasing the clutch after the car reached sufficient speed was far more effective.
Had A V2 STI RA about 15 odd years ago.
Closed deck block, dccd, plate rear diff, sprint ratio box...
Was a quick thing between 20-105 mph when 4th gear maxd out at 7500 rpm.
Stuck a set of v3 4 pots and 225 45 888 Toyos and ran it round the Nurburgring in 8m30.
An incredible car to drive, so light and tactile.
Miss it
My first car out of college was an 86 Wolfsburg edition GLI. It only had about 100 HP but damn it was light and fun. My favorite thing about it was the manual crank sunroof.
Back in the day i got an EVO and my mate had a Impreza. EVO was ALWAYS faster than Impreza. When we drag first two gears was head to head but as soon as I got 3rd, Subaru was already at rearview mirror. Aaahh good old days...Thanks for the video guys!
Nice video, awesome legends as well as the cars as the original race drivers 💪🏻
Race against each other on a short technical circuit (you can use cones) 🙌🏻
More manual content would be cool, great vid👑
Max Cole, i miss the greatness of these Impreza and Lancer
Two of my all time favourites
Great content CarWow- people like to see these legendary rivalries, evo 6.5 is still the pinnacle of the 90s rally car!!
