This song was written for Stefan's (the lead singers) chameleon that he adopted after a music video shoot and that made me love PUP so much they are the best.
Yeah, PUP took a little while to grow on me too, but I absolutely love them now. Their album Morbid Stuff is incredible. That “high quality lo-fi” sound you guys described is pretty trademark for them….so brain cell to Joel, I guessss? Lol.
They do a great job of blending melody with chaos and aggression. I always liken them to if early Weezer went punk. This is a bit obscure, but there’s kind of a running joke in the scene that Stefen (their singer) is the Joanna Newsom of punk (Joanna Newsom famously sounds a little like Lisa Simpson when she sings, but once you just give in to it, it totally clicks).
Haha I'll take that brain cell, thannnnk you! Also, yeah ive really been digging the pup songs ive heard thus far. 😁 -Joel
This song makes me cry everytime I hear it
Thanks dudes for reacting. I would say PUP is an evolution of pop punk. I kinda think of them as a punk rock Weezer. All their videos are excellent and fit together like a movie so I'm sure you guys will enjoy the journey. Cheers boys!
Haha...nice! Glad I'm not the only one who likens them to punk Weezer. Evolution of pop punk is a pretty apt description too. Like if Screeching Weasel or somebody similar was heavily influenced by 90s alt/indie rock (like Weezer, Dinosaur Jr., etc.)....kinda-ish?
That opening riff to DVP blew me away the first time i heard it. Its not complicated (its actually pretty easy to play) but its just a wall of noise and I've been obsessed with this band ever since.
PUP is a weird first listen. I actually got into them after they were around for a while. I’ve heard a song or two and completely discarded them. But one day I heard “Rot” and for some reason that song hooked me and then I checked out they’re music and now I’m a huuuuge fan.
Edit: this song hits hard overall, but that ending, “but I know I won’t” - followed by silence after that intense crescendo… pffff. Great song writing
Not liking PUP is a sin.
