  • Crumpets are an English favourite, toasted for breakfast or tea, slathered in butter, sometimes served with a dollop of jam or a scraping of Marmite. Don't confuse them with muffins - English crumpets have distinctive holes in the top so the overall texture is a bit like a sponge. You ight think making proper crumpets is hard - it really isn't, but like all yeast-based recipes, crumpets need time to rise, and you need the patience to wait. But home-made crumpets are a world away from the commercial ones, so make some time, and make some crumpets!

    I had a go at making crumpets some years ago and they were a success. I remember the recipe saying to help the bubbles by pricking with a pin as you see them developing. This actually worked really well (You get more of em and therefore a better texture to the finished product) You might as well do this anyway as it gives you something to do while you are waiting.

    Am trying these tomorrow! Thank you, from an American whose never had them!

    I usually flip them in the pan and do the top for a minute or two, no more, for some reason in my view they seem to taste better when they've been frozen and subsequently defrosted before being toasted.

    Squidginess! That’s the perfect word to describe the texture of good crumpets 😀 Sadly I’m eating low-carb, so making a batch of thsee is not in my near future 😫 But one day as a treat, when there are lots of others around to help with consumption... this is the recipe I’ll be using! Thanks...

    Good to know what a crumpet is! From the thumbnail I thought that it's bread with cheese on top. I'll try to make them, thanks for the recipe

    My fav crumpet topping would have to be butter and either Vegemite or peanut butter. I’ve not had them in ages.

    I think Asda made a real killing this year when they came out with bunny shaped crumpets this Easter. I am a crumpet addict and there never seems to be enough butter in the fridge for me. I certainly will try your recipe Keef!

      Missed those. BTW George, for some reason UA-cam was holding all of your comments for moderation. I've fixed that now so they always get approved, so don't be feckin' swearing now.

    Hi Keef, would the crumpets stay risen better if you put them straight under the grill (still in the rings) as soon as they came out of the pan? Seemed like they collapsed a little as they cooled.

    Thanks for the video Keef. I've made crumpets a couple of times before using a well known British baker's recipe but have found the bicarb gives off a unpleasant aftertaste. Is there anyway to avoid that? The quantities are similar to your recipe. I will however give your recipe a whirl - Cheers

      I didn't notice the bicarb taste - do know what it is and it is not pleasant!

    I’ve been all over the world an eaten a multitude of local cuisine from the various places. But I’ve never had a crumpet. I feel like I’m missing out. Are they worth a shit?

    What is strong white bread flour, I live in the U.S. and I am not familiar with that term?

    • @Keefcooks
      @Keefcooks  8 років тому +6

      It's bread flour. Here are translations of the others:
      * Cake and pastry flour = soft flour
      * All-purpose flour = plain flour
      * Bread flour = strong flour, hard flour
      * Self-rising flour = self-raising flour
      * Whole-wheat flour = wholemeal flour

    What if you don't have "strong bread flour"?

    • @Keefcooks
      @Keefcooks  7 років тому +2

      I don't know. Maybe you could try it! Bread flour develops lots of gluten which helps with the texture.
