Back when this game came out, games came with instruction manuals. :D A lot of the random crap where you're like "how was I supposed to know to do that" was in the manual.
A lot of the dialogue in the original Japanese version told you what you were supposed to do--for whatever reason, a lot of that got removed in the localization :(
Fun thing I found messing with this game. So I was going through random games to make cheats for MESS. This game was super fun and I came up with a lot of stuff. Then I went to start a fresh run with my loads of hacks and promptly discovered that this game has cheat protection! If you sequence break it too much, you'll be trapped in a world full of invincible enemies!
If you attack one of the oozes at the beginning of the game with the final sword, it transforms and becomes invincible. It's the opposite of what you're thinking.
@@Markworth Yeah, there's a cave late on into the game (after you get the Thunder Sword) filled with early game red slimes that probably can't hurt you at that point in the game, and if you hit one with the Thunder Sword, they'll get powered up and become immune to everything but the Wind Sword. I dunno if the same happens when you hit them with Crystalis, but I think it'd be worth a try. EDIT: I've used the Wild Warp cheat to try killing things with the Crystalis sword. Nothing is immune to it, and no enemies get buffed.
My favorite game of all time! I wonder if I still have the Power Players letter I got from Nintendo giving me tips for getting further in the game... Ah, good times.
The whole thunder element in video games really misled me as a kid. I always thought thunder was the same as lightning because of that. Felt pretty dumb in school when i was taught what it really is.
I've never played this game, but it looks NES hard. Dragondarch did an awesome job. Very entertaining run. Love the commentary. Puwexil is one of my favorite runners.
This game is genuinely one of my childhood favorites, with some of my favorite NES music! (Mt. Sabre, anyone?) It's always awesome to see it. And hey! Maybe we can also see the Game Boy Color port at a GDQ for the Awful block. XD
@@pigfish99 So, uh... what happened to this on the GBC? I owned and really enjoyed this on NES and while I was mildly aware of the GBC version, I presumed it wasn't terribly different.
@Benjamin Lein They rewrote the dialogue (poorly), changed all of the music (poorly), they removed weapon immunities, which took out half the strategy in the game, they completely changed the physics (poorly), and the field of view is so unbelievably tiny that it's almost impossible to walk at full speed and not run into some random enemy you couldn't react to in time. ...But they added voice clips for picking up swords. So... there's that?
I need to watch this as Crystalis has been handing me my ass with its cryptic ways. Now after watching the speed run. I can honestly say I will still have no idea on what to do in my casual play through of Crystalis.
Minimum level? I remember getting to the final boss years ago and thought the game was busted because I couldn't damage it. I just had the cartridge, no manual. It makes so much sense now.
Yeah. I remember grinding to level 16 and trying to fight Draygon 2 without the Power Ring or Bow of Truth. I felt I was doing something wrong, but for years, I could never figure out what.
If anyone's interested in that old TAS by TheAxeMan, I just recorded a new version with the included LUA script enabled to get the commentary and the overlays to point out the hit boxes, etc. Posted here: ua-cam.com/video/WiW5olKNwC4/v-deo.html
One of my most FAVORITE games, wish they had chosen to remake it, so it’s playable on more current systems- like mobile (IPads/ cellphones) or Nintendo Switch…
There's a better way to get thru the trigger blocks that people knew about even back on the NES. If you can get partly into the trigger and face down and start attacking and moving down, it will move you UP thru the block. This also works for people blocking doors.
Puwexil: "He used paralysis on the skeletons so they don't fall apart" ... Cool! Got it! Other Guy: "So he is used paralysis on the seketons the reason he TAS used he is using paralysis is because the skeletons will fall arpart if you dont use paralysis and that will make you wait for them to TAS un fall apart without paralysis and it will make you wait to kill them after they are not fall apart TAS" ... yeah >__> I got it
The world record for the Japanese version uses the max level glitch, so chances are it's a version-exclusive glitch, and simply not available on the US version.
If I had any of the 5 powers in this game (Wind, Fire, Cryo (Water+Ice), Thunder (Lightning), and Crystalis (Basically a god power)..... Then it would be Wind, easily. 😄 Who else agrees? 😜
Run Start: 2:55
Actually, no, it doesn't start at 2:55. It starts at 3:15 lol
Glad to see this game, a favorite from my childhood, getting some love
9:12 - I knew I bamboozled my way through there once as a kid! I was starting to think it was a false memory because I was never able to replicate it.
Back when this game came out, games came with instruction manuals. :D A lot of the random crap where you're like "how was I supposed to know to do that" was in the manual.
even during the magical time of the mythical _"instruction manual"_ there were people who would still never read them.
I just checked the manual for crystalis and it doesnt say shit for tips, it just lists what every item does for whatever reason

@@mesia0 Happened to Zelda 1 too.
@@coolpapabell22 I think Simon's Quest mangled its tips into nonsense and lies, so if that counts too, Castlevania also suffered from localization.
Love Crystalis and that randomizer is one of the best things I've ever seen. Great run

Wow!
Yeah, that's why speed runners grind

Dragondarch has the most comforting speaking voice

Dragondarch has done Speedruns of the GBC version... sadly.

Holy crap! I did that "new" glitch years ago when I was a kid messing around with this game.
Same here. I didn't think it was a big deal back then because my ass would still get kicked in that zone.
Perhaps the Crystalis community is small.
Me to but thought it was useless so didn't do it again
Tried playing this game once awhile ago, had no idea what I was doing, be interesting to see the game actually played!
There are a couple of really confusing parts, for sure.
Strider for NES was the worst for being unclear about it's objectives.
Not the neat kind of unclear like Zelda or minecraft.

I was too young for this game the first time I played it but that title stuck in my mind with it's imagery and music.
I'd love to see a remake for this game.
Me too, or at least a spiritual one

loved this game
Does anyone have images of this game's hitboxes? I wanna see that spider.
It's not quite the spider's hit box, the sword's hit box is a square that is bound on the bottom by the sword when you stab left or right

This game is very good.
How are the graphics so good for a nes game
you can skip the flashing at the beginning and start walking faster
Yes, but in doing so your name is "------" and there was a donation incentive for the name.
love love love
This is the first game I actually ever beat.

That guy was really bad at explaining what a TAS is.
"HEY! I DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT IN A TAS! TASES LET ME DO A DIFFERENT STRATEGY THERE! DID I MENTION I DO A TAS, GUYS? TASES ARE SO COOL!"
24:52 Take this guy's advice.
Holy fuck... At first I thought this was a glitchless then they used glitches.. Do people not know of the instant max lvl glitch? Lol
Well apparently not? Please explain how to do the max level glitch in Crystalis!
The world record for the Japanese version uses the max level glitch, so chances are it's a version-exclusive glitch, and simply not available on the US version.
Jon Snow running games in 2019 😂

I wish this other guy was not on the couch. Dragondarch and Puwexil would’ve been perfect. This other dude is super annoying.
