Hongi Hika the man that the video was about he actually reeked havoc on the eastern coast of New Zealand decimating a lot of Maori tribes mine included this song and video bring to light the atrocities that were committed back then

The two younger ones of the 3 band members were ~16 in this video. They just announced a local tour here for the end of the year and most of the venues they are playing at are small - the one they are playing at in my city for instance is the University bar (which is the 2nd biggest city in NZ). We currently have no covid in the community here , which is why they are able to have this nationwide tour. I saw them at bar here last year , and they weren't even old enough to drink in it at the time lol (drinking age is 18 here).

Your very correct!!! A lot of our ancestors refused to use muskets regardless of the power they yielded, instead prefering to stick to the traditional weapons of their ancestors. My ancestor Mananui TeHeuHeu was one such man, reknown throughout the land for his fighting prowess. As time went by and most tribes had aquired muskets it was a new phase of warfare with the settlers/English which lasted for 30 years.
I encourage you to watch some videos of the "Haka" as performed by Maori tribe members. It is used for many different events from marriages, to funerals, and even graduations.

Alien weaponry also count as Folk metal (due to traditional elements of their music) ... it's a very underrated genre (and a very diverse one because Folk metal from Poland will sound nothing like Folk metal from Mongolia)

Just an FYI for anyone out there, the ta moko (tattooing) is very deep in meaning and is done by an expert who knows the lore. Similarly, the haka is not to be taken lightly and should be properly taught and used appropriately for the occasion.
I seem to remember the crowd at one outdoor concert performed a haka for the band. The crowd was led by someone on stage. I think the band were shocked and thankful the crowd did it. There's a video on UA-cam somewhere.
I've heard from some Mauri people that I know that the tattoos are sacred, but they don't mind if people want to get them and even do it for tourists sometimes. My understanding is that the only tattoos that are 100% for sure off limits are the face tattoos. Would you happen to know if that is correct?
They were that good that young bcause the two brothers are second generation metal musicians. The younger brother especially is a literal prodigy with just an extraordinary natural talent.
There are a lot of bands going back to tribal roots these days,The Hu (Mongolian throat singers),Alien Weaponry, Heilung (Viking tribal music). These boys were 16 and two of them were 14 I think when they wrote this song,and I believe they were the youngest band to sign a contract with Napalm records. I think LeeAnn is right. While the name was inspired by District 9, I feel like they drew a comparison between the alien technology in the movie and how foreign the technology that colonizers brought to subjugate indigenous peoples was, since colonization and repression of indigenous people are recurring themes in their songs. And of course it is an epic name, which is always good when naming a metal band haha. I feel like the video goes back in time at the beginning as the blood falls upward, and then goes forward at the end as everyone falls down representing the deaths and subjugation of the indigenous culture. It is cool that they managed to include dance choreography in a metal song's video haha. I know, it is haka. ;)
Ironically enough it was us Maori who took advantage of some parts of Western culture, quite happily Hongi Hika is an incredibly renown Maori chief (in the video he is the man at the front of the war party when they do their haka with the patu/war club). He brought back muskets AND the word of god, so he himself set up the first established Christian/Maori faith in NZ. Although the history of our wars and trades with Pakeha (basically means 'not Maori') has many similarities to other stories of colonization - our differences mainly being ideological values and the relationship between human and earth. But Maori had slaves, and sold plenty of slaves to foreign powers, we reveled and grieved in the realities of war, I mean it was fairly common place to eat vanquished enemies. All I'm saying is don't mistake Maori for victims, we are warriors.

The Maori people used to practice cannibalism - IIRC, the eating of fallen enemies as a mark of respect - and the band said that they didn't see why people in their own community have been avoiding talking about this, and that's why they made the song, to bring it back into their cultural awareness. If you like folk metal from there's a ton out there - even if we discard the European folk metal scene for the minute (which itself has a lot of very cool bands in it). Try Tengerr Cavalry - Cavalry in Thousands. They are Mongolian, much like The Hu, but waaaay heavier... and also sadly the frontman and composer died, so they won't be making any more music. Also try Bloodywood - Machi Basad for Indian metal (there are a good few others, but these guys are an excellent introduction). Orphaned Land and Melechesh are both Israeli bands (though with some members from other countries or ethnicities) who are often called oriental metal, and grouped with other folk metal bands, There's a wealth out there to find - depending on what you mean by "folk" you can find a ton of cool stuff.

I don't know how old you lady's are but in the 90s there was a book card and PC game vampires the masquerade were vamps and werewolves lived in the world. The werewolves finally got their own game called werewolf the apocalypse playing cards and tribe books and other books,now there's a ps4&xbox1 game coming out based on WTA called werewolf the apocalypse Earthblood and this song is used in one of the trailers and might be in the game too. My interpretation of why the one side all fell at the end is because they all got shot by the other tribe. With muskets, due to their slow firing speed and accuracy issues, would usually be fired in volleys, which would be why a bunch of people would all fall at the same time

The Maori Warriors did engage in cannibalism. Once they defeated there enemy's they would eat them to increase there mana and to insult there enemy's. Apparently it was theorized to be Eroupean Propaganda but apparently Oral Tradition and Archeology suggest they very well did engage in such a practice.
Great reaction. You two seemed impressed by the women, actually you don't know the half of it. Yes it's true that Maori warriors would often eat the bodies of the fallen enemies to insult their families and take their mana (power). But the women also had their own form of retribution. Prisoners taken from a battle would sometimes be given over to the Widows who had just lost their husband (for want of a better term) in the fight. Their deaths at the hands of those women were truly terrible. Better to die in battle.

It's called Kai Tangata because after Maori warriors defeated enemies they would Kai-eat/Tangata-people to absorb their mana and dishonor them.

I seem to remember the crowd at one outdoor concert performed a haka for the band. The crowd was led by someone on stage. I think the band were shocked and thankful the crowd did it. There's a video on UA-cam somewhere.
I've heard from some Mauri people that I know that the tattoos are sacred, but they don't mind if people want to get them and even do it for tourists sometimes. My understanding is that the only tattoos that are 100% for sure off limits are the face tattoos. Would you happen to know if that is correct?

They were that good that young bcause the two brothers are second generation metal musicians. The younger brother especially is a literal prodigy with just an extraordinary natural talent.
There are a lot of bands going back to tribal roots these days,The Hu (Mongolian throat singers),Alien Weaponry, Heilung (Viking tribal music).
These boys were 16 and two of them were 14 I think when they wrote this song,and I believe they were the youngest band to sign a contract with Napalm records.

I think LeeAnn is right. While the name was inspired by District 9, I feel like they drew a comparison between the alien technology in the movie and how foreign the technology that colonizers brought to subjugate indigenous peoples was, since colonization and repression of indigenous people are recurring themes in their songs. And of course it is an epic name, which is always good when naming a metal band haha. I feel like the video goes back in time at the beginning as the blood falls upward, and then goes forward at the end as everyone falls down representing the deaths and subjugation of the indigenous culture. It is cool that they managed to include dance choreography in a metal song's video haha. I know, it is haka. ;)

Hongi Hika is an incredibly renown Maori chief (in the video he is the man at the front of the war party when they do their haka with the patu/war club). He brought back muskets AND the word of god, so he himself set up the first established Christian/Maori faith in NZ.
Although the history of our wars and trades with Pakeha (basically means 'not Maori') has many similarities to other stories of colonization - our differences mainly being ideological values and the relationship between human and earth. But Maori had slaves, and sold plenty of slaves to foreign powers, we reveled and grieved in the realities of war, I mean it was fairly common place to eat vanquished enemies. All I'm saying is don't mistake Maori for victims, we are warriors.

Great stuff! The Maori people used to practice cannibalism - IIRC, the eating of fallen enemies as a mark of respect - and the band said that they didn't see why people in their own community have been avoiding talking about this, and that's why they made the song, to bring it back into their cultural awareness.
If you like folk metal from there's a ton out there - even if we discard the European folk metal scene for the minute (which itself has a lot of very cool bands in it).
Try Tengerr Cavalry - Cavalry in Thousands. They are Mongolian, much like The Hu, but waaaay heavier... and also sadly the frontman and composer died, so they won't be making any more music.
Also try Bloodywood - Machi Basad for Indian metal (there are a good few others, but these guys are an excellent introduction).
Orphaned Land and Melechesh are both Israeli bands (though with some members from other countries or ethnicities) who are often called oriental metal, and grouped with other folk metal bands,
There's a wealth out there to find - depending on what you mean by "folk" you can find a ton of cool stuff.

Not really. It was a manner of disrespect. No form of insult could top turning your enemy into feces, so it was actually a Taboo across many Iwi, and was very protected for the participants to have strong ritual to perform the act, Kai Tangata. It was a fearsome practice, and not usually smiled upon by anyone.
It was a means of taking your victims Mana, their prestige. "How can one define my act? A man of great fortune and esteem, now sits on my plate to fill my stomach. Does that not make me an even greater man?"

They are called Alien Weaponry is a concept of their music as a "sonic weapon" both politically and culturally. It's also a reference to Maori Warchants and Haka. Also, not surprised if they were influenced by District 9.
The reason Kai Tangata was called what it is is due to consuming Mana or living energy by consuming the flesh of their enemy. It's also why in Haka their protrude their tongue. It means "I will eat you."

I don't know how old you lady's are but in the 90s there was a book card and PC game vampires the masquerade were vamps and werewolves lived in the world. The werewolves finally got their own game called werewolf the apocalypse playing cards and tribe books and other books,now there's a ps4&xbox1 game coming out based on WTA called werewolf the apocalypse Earthblood and this song is used in one of the trailers and might be in the game too. Go check it out that's how I found out about this song and alien weaponry. 😊

My interpretation of why the one side all fell at the end is because they all got shot by the other tribe. With muskets, due to their slow firing speed and accuracy issues, would usually be fired in volleys, which would be why a bunch of people would all fall at the same time

The Maori Warriors did engage in cannibalism. Once they defeated there enemy's they would eat them to increase there mana and to insult there enemy's.
Apparently it was theorized to be Eroupean Propaganda but apparently Oral Tradition and Archeology suggest they very well did engage in such a practice.
Great reaction. You two seemed impressed by the women, actually you don't know the half of it. Yes it's true that Maori warriors would often eat the bodies of the fallen enemies to insult their families and take their mana (power). But the women also had their own form of retribution. Prisoners taken from a battle would sometimes be given over to the Widows who had just lost their husband (for want of a better term) in the fight. Their deaths at the hands of those women were truly terrible. Better to die in battle.
