@@TDBoedy I think that's the point that Beth was trying to make. Eating the flesh of one's enemy, in Māori culture, is an insult to the enemy. You've not only taken their life, their mana, into you, you've taken their people's respect away from them.
@@Robert_Douglass That is true! But people still think real native people from "New sealand" are cannibals! One of my best friend is 100% Native. And hates how people treat him! He and his native wife choose not to have kids. Because of how bad people treat him!
Kia ora! Current Alien Weaponry bass player here, thanks for checking out the song! Fun fact for your comment about the woman warrior, its quite well documented that once Māori found out that the british didn't consider women to be warriors or even unworthy of being warriors, Māori would send women out at the end of battles to deliver the killing blows to all the british soldiers still wounded on the battlefield as a sign of disrespect!
That would definitely be disrespectful in their eyes to have a woman deal the killing blow as the last thing they see, but is it not also disrespectful to let the women deal the killing blow after the British soldiers are already incapacitated? Like saying the only way they can kill an enemy soldier is once they are already half dead? Just food for thought 😅😅
@@blaynegreiner9365 Reality is not disrespectful. In hand to hand combat women are completely unequal to men is all but the absolute most extreme cases. @@barrymantz6026 I'm sorry I don't understand. Alien Weaponry is a band from New Zealand. A Kiwi is a New Zealand Citizen (as well as our national animal, but that's not the important bit here). Kiwi is an informal word, as I'm discovering, mostly used by people in New Zealand to describe themselves. Calling us a New Zealander is way too long to say every time. So my statement is, "As a Kiwi (citizen of New Zealand) this band makes me proud and happy
U can laugh but... They sound very similar to an "old" basque band ... Who obviously sings in euskera. And yes I know the words re totally different but fonetically sounds the same.😅.
Hi Beth. Scottish descent Kiwi here. These lads have done and continue to do a great job getting the culture out there. I believe they've gone as far as Wakken Open Air among other things, and toured with Ministry. They were pegged to do a stint touring with Slayer before Covid interfered. Very successful young lads the De Jong's. We are real proud of them. A lot of their songs re-tell the stories of the NZ Land wars, fighting off the brits. Something Scots can get on board with too :D
Saw them a few years ago at a much-delayed gig in Cardiff (Wales, UK) in support of Gojira. I already thought these guys were fantastic, but they're so much more powerful and impressive when you see them live.
Yes! This is one of my favorite things about Alien Weaponry. I'm from the states and we were just in New Zealand last June and it was incredible to see and to learn about the Maori culture. You should check out their newest single, another important history lesson in it! And fun fact about the video, the second half of it has scenes that were filmed inside Whakarewarewa living village, which is a semi-traditional Maori (colonial) village where people still live. Absolutely stunning!
reminds me a bit of very old sepultura (like rattamahatta) or old soulfly (like the dark ages album). metal with traditional tribal components fucking rocks!
The tatooing device you see is traditinal, mabe from shark's teeth. The showing of the tongue is a threat to the enemy. A severed head will inevitably have a protruding swollen tongue and bulging eyes. They are showing their enemy what he will look like after they are done with him. And besides stealing the life force or "mana", eating the flesh of your enemy is the ultimate insult. I love that they are preserving their native language. ❤🤍💙
It is a traditional tattoo not modern. It’s sometimes teeth but also greenstone for added prestige. Im Māori… Not sure where you got this severed head stuff from in relation to the pukana tho. Tino pai! I'm not a big metaller, but I'm extremely impressed by AW - and pleased to see how popular they are beyond Aotearoa/NZ. They always have amazing videos, and the mix of thrashy guitars and drums with Māori chanting is perfect. Te Reo Māori is a syllabic language - consonants are individually separated by vowels, so it can have a staccato feel, perfect for metal. Have a listen to their track "Raupatu (Confiscated)". PS - Kai rhymes with "buy" and Tangata is "TAH-ngah-tah", with the ng like the first ng in "singing". Kaitangata is also the name of a small town not far from where I live! Ngā mihi!
Something to note about these boys is that they were *very* young when they started the band, and also still quite young (17-19ish I believe?) when they recorded this song. They've been doing this for a while, but they're still barely in their 20s now. Unbelievable talent for how old they are.
I introduced a work friend to metal through Alien Weaponry. She grew up a South Islander in a strong Māori community, and when I showed her the Kai Tangata vid she burst into tears. Thankfully tears of happiness. Even though she had never listened to anything heavier than rock, she became addicted to AW and dove into other metal bands.

Ive watched this video a few times and ever time it makes me so emotional. Theres something about the Haka and the visuals that envokes the primal instinct and this hits the spot. Watching the All blacks do the haka at a rugby match also does it but in this video with all the authentic tace tatoos its so much more powerful. What a great track.

As an expat Kiwi, this was great to hear. FYI Kai Tangata is pronounced as Kai (which you got right) Ta-Nga-Ta (rather than the tan-gatta you went with); all Maori syllables end with a vowel.
I was born in the UK, and my parents brought me here to NZ when I was 7 years old. Since I've been here I've learnt a lot about how the impact of our arrival wasn't exactly a blessing for the local people..., Much the same as every other Indigenous population we forced ourselves on. While I'm happy that the NZ government has over the years put some effort into rectifying the wrongs of the past unfortunately I can't foresee a time when everyone will feel things have been put right. There was just too much damage done.

Period Maori tattoo is unique, in that the skin is carved, not needle pointed, it leaves deep scar and ridges. In modern times, it's rare but still done on occasion. Personally I wouldn't have the stones to have it done that way.
It's similar to modern scarification and tattoos combined. I have a couple of both and whilst I'd happily get a large tattoo piece done, the idea of a whole scar design over my butt cheek, or face cheek for that matter, would give me serious pause. And that's with modern equipment and aftercare.
@@AnonEyeMouse Do you? Did you have people cut in your flesh, make it inflamed on purpose and put ink into the wounds? While you as a young 14 years old kid where send to hunt and battle? .... I do not think so!!
I was so lucky to see them live! They were openers in a music festival here in France. They opened for Gojira, my sister's favourite band who, despite being French, have become so popular internationally that they rarely play in France anymore. Some of you might have seen them recently as Gojira played for the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics. So for my sister's birthday in July last year, I got her two tickets for Gojira so I could join her and she wouldn't have to go alone. This is our tradition, for over five years now we've gifted each others two tickets to see our favourite bands with the other sibling as the plus one so we wouldn't have to go alone and it has been such an amazing tradition. So we went to see Gojira in August and they had three or four openers, I can't remember exactly, and Alien Weaponry was one of them! They were my sister and I's favourite out of the four opening bands by a wide margin so we immediately went online to learn more about them. I even remember posting a tiktok saying how unexpected it was to hear Te Reo Maori sung in heavy metal in a French metal festival. I'm glad you're giving them the spotlight!
Haha! Metal's geekery and inclusiveness! Nice one. And I salute your geekery and inclusiveness, Beth !You've helped to expand minds with this one. Defo reminds me of Sepultura and their incorporation of traditional Brazilian music, and Gojira's similar use of Amazonian traditional music on their latest album (and also the guitars). I was going to suggest Bloodywood but just noticed you did them recently. That's where I'm going next! 😃
i grew up in North Waikato and yep, there are definitely some ladies you don't wanna get on the wrong side of 😮😅😅😅😅 This music video is freakin awesome, doesn't matter where in the world you're from it reaches in and grabs you like an icy hand😮😊😊😊
If i remember correctly the tribes to the north were the first to gain muskets, they used this advantage to get revenge of all who wronged them in the past.
Occasionally i look and see what concerts are coming to Edmonton. Kerry King, Municipal Waste, and Alien Weaponry are here in a little over a month so grabbed tickets. Should be fun, been too long since I've been on a pit.
I've first time heard about Maori metal band. Thanks your channel. Yours interpretations of metal songs are pretty cool. Thx. Beth, you should be also interested in Mongolian band - The HU. Do you know them? Regards from Poland.
If you like Alien Weaponry then you should also check out a Samoan band called Shepherd's Reign. My favorite song of theirs is Aiga, but their most popular one is called Le Manu
Gotta say, the comparison to Alice In Chains is bang on. Never thought of it that way but the boys definitely got some inspiration from them, subconsciously or otherwise.
With many thanks to my Māori friends Max and his wife Kaz who translated this for me, .... with them telling Tūmatauenga is not only their God of war but also the God of fishing, hunting and cooking in their origional mythology! They also asked me when sharing this to tell other people their are sick still being called maneaters or cannibals. That was a practise done more than 200 years ago. Samoa also uses the Haka before battle. So when they played NZ, BOTH sides did Hakas at each other. When Jason Momoa auditioned for the role of Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones be doing a one-man Haka for them. But my favorite Haka-related trivia is that one time, both the men’s and women’s leagues were given special jerseys. Normally, it was black, but when you stretch the fabric, it revealed a full LGBT endorsing rainbow color. The way they did it was to to make the cloth into like an accordion’s bellows.normally, you only see tip of the bellows fold. But the rest is rainbow. They only made them for the team, though. I’ve never been able to find them for sale.
I'm Australian and have loved this song since it first appeared. Also, the Haka... Every time I see or hear one, the hairs on my arms stand up and pay attention.
We read about and studied native history in one of my college classes. And this song was one of the ones that we went over. There are a lot of native fusion mixes and music that you can look at and a lot of covers innative languages that I highly. Recommend looking over.
Alien Weaponry was formed in Auckland in 2010 by two brothers, the drummer Henry Te Reiwhati de Jong and the guitarist/singer Lewis Raharuhi de Jong, who were only 10 and 8 years old respectively. Their mother and their maternal grandfather are of Dutch descent, and their father and paternal grandmother are Māori.
The Northern tribes had women chiefs. They were brutal cannibals apparently. One of my work colleagues was descended from the tribe being attacked here. He told me the men still don't mess with the women. LoL.
I'm surprised you didn't comment on the warrior woman’s red hair. There were red haired Maori before the Europeans came, nobody knows exactly where it came from.
The tattoo instrument is not a modern tattoo instrument it's done with sharpened sticks are sharks teeth or even bone and a hammer it's very painful it's like the Hawaiian tattoos and Japanese tattoos the tool you see going up and down that's done by hitting the top with a hammer

As someone that runs a TTRPG about the children of the gods, the Maori (known as the Atua in the game) came up. Doing my research and listening to this song when it came out, there are two aspects in this video I thought was neat. First was all the showing of the tongue. It was considered insulting & intimidating to show your tongue, and was connected to the god Tūmatauenga, who is referenced in this song by the idol carving at the beginning of the video. The other was painting the bones red, which happens to their dead one year after burial, called Te hahunga. Very fascinating stuff.
women warriors is a modern fixation it was very rare in most traditions , the appearance of womens graves in ancient grave yards makes people think they were a thing but weapons can be a mark of rank with in the society and in some traditions women had to do what ever the men could do while the men were away and that included defending your land or settlement they would not be front line warriors as a rule ......
Since you like bands that blend metal with traditional instruments and sensibilities, check out Bloodywood. They blend metal and Punjabi music. Check the song "Ari Ari" Also, you could check out the Mudmen who blend punk and Scottish pipe and folk music. Check out "Home for a Rest"
Kai tangata more or less not only means food and people but eat peoaple as kai means to eat something as well as food so its a little more litterally XD
6:09 - THRASH metal not Trash metal...although in a way some of thrash is trash...lol Also, that is a traditional bouncing off an index finger style of bamboo tattooing method.
Alien Weaponry are a great live act and you did an excellent analysis. You should check out Shepherds Reign they're from NZ and they sing many of their songs in Samoan. Le Manu ua-cam.com/video/BSNb1LXXk40/v-deo.html
As someone who is relatively heavily tattooed, I have mad respect for anyone who could sit for the HOURS of painstakining hand-poking that real Polynesian tattooing requires. It must be akin to torture!
With the woman warrior you actually mixed vikings with Māori and other native tribes all around the world! English comes from Old english, .... and Old English comes from Frisian! What is still spoken in a part of the Netherlands. Who where Vikings!

These guys are amazing, You might also like Sheperds Reign 🤟🏾🤟🏾
This is one of my favorite new zealand bands I've seen them live once this is my favorite song the hole album is good
I was so lucky to see them live!
Love your love of diversity. They remind me a bit of Soulfly. I was distracted on how well your chair and sweater matched.
Saw them live this summer and they were fantastic.
Saw them in Germany this Year! Great Band live!
Beth, check out Shepherds Reign. They are Samoan metal from New Zealand. They have a similar style to Alien Weaponry.
Yeah, this! Just came across them via Spotify, pretty solid band as well
Alien Weaponry
i grew up in North Waikato and yep, there are definitely some ladies you don't wanna get on the wrong side of 😮😅😅😅😅
This music video is freakin awesome, doesn't matter where in the world you're from it reaches in and grabs you like an icy hand😮😊😊😊
I hate how shes so correct in her analysis, good head on her shoulders
If i remember correctly the tribes to the north were the first to gain muskets, they used this advantage to get revenge of all who wronged them in the past.
Reminds me along the style of Ningen ISU (Japan folk metal). Very interesting band you've introduced me too. Thanks!
folk metal do be a wild genre
we got everythign from Mongolian throat singing to Aztec death whistle you can headbang to
I'd love to see you react to another young hard rock trio, out of western Canada, Freeze The Fall
Original video for Daughters Of Witches.
Yes I love Alien Weaponry!!!!!
You need to check out Sepultura (Refuse/Resist, Territory, or Amen)
This maori band reminds me of a brazilian metal band called Arandu Arakuaa, which sings in indigenous languages, such as Tupi, Yanomami and Guarani
and they are still in their teens when they recorded this
You might also like Tangaroa by Tiki Taane.
If you like Alien Weaponry then you should also check out a Samoan band called Shepherd's Reign. My favorite song of theirs is Aiga, but their most popular one is called Le Manu
Best comment ever in a video, "hats off to your geekery and inclusion"
Gotta say, the comparison to Alice In Chains is bang on. Never thought of it that way but the boys definitely got some inspiration from them, subconsciously or otherwise.
With many thanks to my Māori friends Max and his wife Kaz who translated this for me, .... with them telling Tūmatauenga is not only their God of war but also the God of fishing, hunting and cooking in their origional mythology! They also asked me when sharing this to tell other people their are sick still being called maneaters or cannibals. That was a practise done more than 200 years ago. My friends just try to fit in with the white people while being the Native people in their own country! Thumb up for for both Kaz and Max!

They played this at a huge festival in Germany, Wacken? The whole crowd erupted and sang along in te reo, Maori. Music has no bounds
Wicked!
Really that's awesome
Ohhhh man... I would have LOVED to be part of that!
I saw them live in Norway this summer 🎉
You should watch their new one: Mai Moko
Us Samoans don't preform the haka because it is a Maori tradition we preform the Manu Siva Tau because that is Samoan tradition.
The LGBT endorsing is absolutely fantastic stuff, my queer friends are going to love it!
I'm Australian and have loved this song since it first appeared. Also, the Haka... Every time I see or hear one, the hairs on my arms stand up and pay attention.
Crazy you haven't done Killswitch Engage - My Curse or The End of Heartache
They seem very inspired by Sepultura.
Heck yeah i love alien weaponry
if you enjoyed this i highly recommend you check out the Samoan metal band Shepards Reign.
We read about and studied native history in one of my college classes. And this song was one of the ones that we went over. There are a lot of native fusion mixes and music that you can look at and a lot of covers innative languages that I highly. Recommend looking over.
Nice
We need a Days Of The New reaction
🤟🏼🔉🔊❤️
Also that sound overlay @8:55 is a bullroarer ( there are other names ) was used over long distances for communication
I like to think that they decided to give the scariest little girl ever a show before they ate her. Out of respect that is.
Kai isn't just food , it's also referenced as knowledge , eg in reference to the song it's knowledge of the people. ......yes I'm Maori.
LoL.
Me encantó el vídeo la canción los cantantes lo resumo a una palabra Fantásticoooooooooooooo............ bien Beth 👏👏🍀🍀
Sheperds Reign also a good metal band in the same vien.
Dont forget they were actually teenagers when the recorded this, i think like 14-17 years old
On that Tom Araya bit, the genre is supposed to be Thrash Metal. Your text says Trash Metal, which only applies to the bands that suck xD
Aw man. The worst typo!
It means “everyone is food”😂
@bethRoars completely different style but a fun kiwi song that blends Te Reo and English, have a listen I think you will find it fun and love it =) Big Aroha by The Slacks - ua-cam.com/video/nsNu9poK0ug/v-deo.htmlsi=_5jNPnjARmLbGiLE
Rather like it
Too old to be a real metal fan, but I would much rather listen to Devilskin. Proper music !!
Since you like bands that blend metal with traditional instruments and sensibilities, check out Bloodywood. They blend metal and Punjabi music. Check the song "Ari Ari" Also, you could check out the Mudmen who blend punk and Scottish pipe and folk music. Check out "Home for a Rest"
and marry traditional music
Kai tangata more or less not only means food and people but eat peoaple as kai means to eat something as well as food so its a little more litterally XD
6:09 - THRASH metal not Trash metal...although in a way some of thrash is trash...lol Also, that is a traditional bouncing off an index finger style of bamboo tattooing method.
Ooops typo!
that is an old bone fanned tattoo needle. If you think that was machine tattooing you are living on another planet.
Alien Weaponry are a great live act and you did an excellent analysis.
You should check out Shepherds Reign they're from NZ and they sing many of their songs in Samoan. Le Manu
ua-cam.com/video/BSNb1LXXk40/v-deo.html
Kai tangata is Human food.
Those are traditional tattoos not modern.
