Very true, just politely suggest new gear or improving their setup. You can give them tips or watch UA-cam videos on setup/recording to help them out. But make sure to tell them!
Hi thanks for the video, this has been very useful. I have a question though - if I have been building up my skills in editing for a while and am fairly advanced, then get my first client, should I price big straight off the bat or start fairly low?
Hi thank you for watching, I would personally start off fairly low and build up over time. But it depends on the size of the client and the value you bring to them. I have a full exclusive video on pricing here: ua-cam.com/video/bmXyQaN5k_E/v-deo.htmlsi=ZQBdlysmte2jso91
Hey Sam 👋. I have been following you for a while, your content is very useful to me. I would like to ask you a quick question. I work as a freelancer and live in the Middle East. I want to work with clients in European countries. How do I reach them?
Yes, I thought about creating content on UA-cam like you, but my content will appear in the Middle East because of my geographical location, so I thought about learning cold emails and sending them to customers and putting my channel link in them so that they trust me. what do you think about this idea ?
Good videos Sam. I am based in the UK and recently began learning to edit using Capcut. Is it possible to do well with Capcut or should I be moving onto another program soon?
Hi, thanks for watching! CapCut is becoming more and more capable, and it's a great software to get to grips with the basics on. But I'd recommend switching to Premiere Pro (my preference) or Davinci Resolve/Final Cut Pro, as they are the industry standard for professional editing softwares.
Hey bro so I have no idea how to get started and I am being told to learn the “basics” before using DaVinci. However the problem is I have no clue how to start. I know that I want to start with sports edits. Got any advice?😅
My 2nd newest explains it better than I could here. I explain how I got started with video editing and found a client within a matter of weeks, it basically comes down to practice practice practice and then outreach.
Hey, not an expert here so take this with a grain of salt but what I would recommend is to get yourself familiar with a simple editing software such as capcut, kapwing, or shotcut (I started with kapwing. It has a browser version so you don’t have to spend time downloading something that you will only use temporarily). When you feel very comfortable using that software you should move over to a software such as davinci resolve and try to apply what you have learned from the previous software. I’m no video editing sense I but if you don’t know how to start then this is what I’d recommend to start building your editing skills 😅
sam i got a email from your academy at 9:46 (gmt +5:00) eventhough i didn't join the academy.....SO MY main point is i am a high school student ,my age is 15 and i am from INDIA..i am doing editing since april 2024 ,the question is in india doing freelancing isn't easy bcuz of amount of editors and actually i have interest in 3d animation .So with all due respect of SAM P DUNN .Give me a right path to experience a billion dollars.. bye man
Hey man, I send out emails to my full list rather than just Editors Academy students. But to answer your question, It's all about positioning yourself as different from other editors. Yes there's many freelance editors from India but most are fighting over low level clients. My aim with this video was to help you to differentiate yourself from those guys and hunt out higher paying clients.
Hey bro, find raw footage and improve it with effects, music, animations etc - but it's all about matching their style and branding the best you can! If you're not confident with this just yet, you can watch tutorials and practise creating edits you see on UA-cam videos!
You just have to find raw footage and if there isn't any, move on. Raw footage could be an old video, unedited vid, podcast etc - you just have to be resourceful.
Yes absolutely, it's the exact same concept - giveaway something for free like a sample video or an audit of their current socialmedia/shortform strategy.
I started my first business at 17 and was earning thousands a month from business owners 3x my age. If you know what you're doing and speak confidently you'll be fine, people generally not only take you seriously but want to work with you and support younger people coming up. 17 is almost an adult and 99% of people treat you as such, it won't be awkward.

Such a great video man.Loved it
Thanks very much!
How do we talk to our client to improve their video quality. There are times that my editing cannot do anything to bad recording. 😅

With the method I speak about in this video, did you watch it?
Yes, I thought about creating content on UA-cam like you, but my content will appear in the Middle East because of my geographical location, so I thought about learning cold emails and sending them to customers and putting my channel link in them so that they trust me. what do you think about this idea ?
The video explains exactly how to find clients and you're asking me in the comments how to find clients?

Do you know if I can focus only in short form videos?
Yes absolutely, it's the exact same concept - giveaway something for free like a sample video or an audit of their current socialmedia/shortform strategy.
OGs know this isn't the first time he's making this kinda video. 😅
Updated 2025 version with more detail! lol
