Made my own "needle" out of floral wire. Works great & because of this video I have cut enough strips to do 3 wound reels that hold 6 yards of 2" strips each ready to make my 1st rug..thank you
My mother had these kinds of rugs at our front door through my entire childhood. When one would get too used, another would replace it. It always reminds me of her. I was looking for one online and I could only find super expensive ones. I am so excited to make it myself with your tutorial
Ryah Mesch That's so lovely! Making your own will make the memories even more special! They can be expensive to buy, but a lot of time and effort does go into making them. Enjoy making your rug 😊

Thank you for such a unique & clever idea. Your instructions are so clear and straight forward I can't wait to pull out the box and plan my project! Thank you!
Hello Jean, sorry for your loss. Wow to the stash of ribbons! They will create such a beautiful rug and keepsake ☺ A little tip would be to use cord or rope, on one long continuous piece, or thicker fabric, for the spine. This will help to keep the rug sturdy ☺ Enjoy making your rug!
Josh - your comment stirred up a memory! My mother did the same, back when we were all drowning in plastic bags of all kinds! They do fall apart to bits, though, eventually. Wonder if an old tarpaulin could be repurposed this way? Cheers ☮️
@@GaiaCarney The great thing about this type of rug is you can use almost any fabric. The only issue would be how the strips would be joined together, other than that it's just a case of being creative with what fabric you use 😊

I made a toothbrush rug a few years ago and vowed I would never do another one however after watching your video, creating your own tool out of that wire seems to make it a whole lot easier to use and the tool can be different sizes based on the width of the fabric you're using. I just love it!

I stumbled across your video.. and after watching many, yours is the absolute best!! I've been saving old sheets, towels, clothes.. you name it.. waiting for the right craft. It's been 3 years and today is my new start, thanks to you!! I'm hoping to create and sell something as a way of making ends meet. Unfortunately, I've purchased a wooden needle from etsy that's personalized. I had no idea I could make one for free, lol. I cannot thank you enough for making and sharing. You're my Ah-Ha 🥳
That's fabulous, thank you! Make sure to use your needle to the max and I'm sure in the future you'll also use it for other crafts. Enjoy creating your beautiful rugs. Wishing you all the best 😊
Thankyou Barri-Jayne for your wonderful instructions. I came across the idea for toothbrush rugs by accident and was intrigued by the history of them. I'm in Australia and I had never heard of them before. I bought some wooden needles on ebay ( at great expense ) and while waiting for them to arrive from America , found your videos and realised I could have made a simple needle myself. I'm left handed so that was a bit of a challenge to reverse everything but I've made an oval and a round rug with which I'm rather pleased. I've been using 2 1/2" strips for both the spine and the working strips and they are good but I wondered if a narrower spine would make the spine less obvious and possibly make for a slightly thinner rug. I would appreciate your thoughts on this.
Thanks for your message. That's great that you've made a couple of rugs already. I was a bit shocked when I first saw some prices for the needles, but I'm sure they will make your work a little easier. A narrower strip might make the spine less obvious and possibly create a thinner rug. It will depend on how thick the main strips are and tightness of the knots. Sometimes you don't really know how it's going to go until you've created a couple of rounds. I often use the same colour fabric throughout and then it all blends in. Happy rug making 😊
LOVE the large pink one!!! This is the only video for ovals Ive found that says to INCREASE on the sides!!! I love how the sides arent straight on yours ... Really wish we could know exactly when and what rows to start increasing on the sides tho and not have to guess ...but I realize everyones tension on tying is different. Ive made alot of these rugs using 4 inch strips,,want to try a thinner one like yours ,..theyd be much easier to wash. and use way less fabric, LOVE the ribbon idea !! Beautiful Rugs. Barri Jayne!......Thanks for another great tutorial !
Hey Katherine, thanks for your message. Yes, you're right that everyone's tension on tying knots is different, so it does make it tricky to give a set point of increase. I haven't made many oval rugs, but I found that I didn't need to add to the sides that often, because each time you increased on the corners it's adding to the side. I think that makes sense, I hope that makes sense. Anyway enjoy making many more rugs. All the bext 😊

Thank you for your message Geeta. Sorry to hear yours has not gone so well. I think it might be that you're pulling a bit too tight on the 'spine' and/or possibly need to add more knots more often. Heather Hedrick Hi, you're just in time to the party! I've literally just uploaded a tutorial for a rectangle Amish knot rug and the instructions to start the rug, although a bit blurry, is clearer than these. The oval and the rectangle rug both start the same way. Enjoy making your rug! 😊

Heather Hedrick 🤣Thank you so much! I did actually wonder if you were meant to say that, because overall it sounded more like a compliment. 😁 The newer tutorial is still clearer though! Happy rug making! 😊
This is so helpful!! I’ve tried a couple times to crochet using old T-shirts as yarn but it’s never worked out well, but I think this is a good alternative and I’ll give it a try!
Is the length of the spine end of as long as the pieces you're threading through the hole? How much fabric will I need to make an oval that's approximately 3x5? I echo everyone's sentiments. Your beautiful voice, calm manner, clear thinking, excellent pacing. You really make this inspiring.
Hi Claudia, overall, the 'spine' uses less strips than the 'working piece' My blog post should give you some idea of how much fabric to use. But generally I use king size or double duvet covers. The great thing is that you can keep adding to it. barrijaynemakes.blogspot.com/2017/07/handmade-rag-rug-tutorial.html hope it helps. Thank you so much for you lovely message. Enjoy making you rug! 😊
Thank you for this video you have made it so easy to follow and I have been looking for an easy way to begin making these. I have watched a lot of these videos and yours is the best one so far.
Thank you for your sweet comment, Maire! I literally just laughed out loud!!! And now wearing a huge grin 😁 Thank you, you've absolutely just made my year 😂 Enjoy making your rug and all the best in 2018 :)
Inches and feet was what I grew up with and what I understand. When people talk in metres and cms it baffles my brain, lol 😄 I'm also a stone, lbs and ozs girl, haha! Enjoy making your rug 🙂
I'm working on a rug using your instructions. Of course, it always looks so easy when you look at a tutorial but a bit harder doing it yourself. I'm not sure if I'm working too tight but my rug keeps twisting. You mentioned that after a while it will adjust itself and the twisting will cease. Hoping this will happen soon. I made my strips 2 inches wide because the duvet cover that I'm using is pretty thin. I'm wondering if my ribbon is a bit too wide (or thick...it's an inch wide.) Oh well, I'll keep working at it! Thank you so much.
Make sure you're not pulling on the spine. Keep manipulating the rug into shape as you go along. The width or thickness shouldn't make a difference, except you'll have a sturdier rug. I'm sure you're doing fine! Let me know how you get along 👍🏾😃
Hello Lenore, thanks for your message. Now that is one question I'm unable to answer. All I can say is that you will need loads and loads. But I bet it would look amazing! 😊
When you say to add knots at certain points what do you mean? Double knots side by side in one slot? That will create the oval shape? Thank you for your awesome videos!!
Hi, yes the double knots are side by side in one slot. If you watch at 6min 50sec and at 9min 25sec, it will show you approximately where you need to place the double knots. It's usually added when the distance between knots are getting far apart. It's all literally guess work. Wishing you all the best. 😊
I really enjoyed your video. The ribbon really made it easy to learn as the color stood out and helped to visualize the start. And the term spine helped me to I understand the construction.
I ran across your channel I really enjoyed watching you do this rag rug .I cant weight to try to make one of these rugs.i need to go fabric or sheet shopping. I just subscribe to your channel.
Vraiment Très joli tapis... cela à l'air simple mais surtout bien épais et doux et plus pratique que ceux que l'on voit dans les magasins avec des fils. Je vais essayez
I enjoyed your video and feel confident to look and see what I can do. Instructions are clear . Thank you and I will follow your links and watch your videos.
I just found you videos and if this is a silly question I apologize but do I have to use a duvet? Can I use t-shirts, sewing material and or sheets etc..? If you want a soft rug - one you can machine wash, what type of material would you use? Thank You for sharing your gift and knowledge. Also I hope you will take this comment as a compliment but you have a very calming voice and manner. I'm so very relaxed when I normally get tense learning something new. Please be safe and healthy, Diane
Hey DJ, not a silly question at all. Yes, you can use almost any material. The amount you'll need is equivalent to a double duvet cover or two double sheets. As long as the fabric is already washable, it will wash up just fine. Thank you sweetly for the compliment! I do have some guided meditation videos if you're interested! Have a lovely day! I loved it
You are amazing, thanks for your sharing 🌷🌷
thank you! Enjoy making your rug 😊
Thanks a lot, nice lady. I just make one for my bathroom.
That's fabulous! 💫
This is so helpful!! I’ve tried a couple times to crochet using old T-shirts as yarn but it’s never worked out well, but I think this is a good alternative and I’ll give it a try!
Yay to trying new things. Enjoy making your rug! 😊
Could you use t-shirt yarn for this method?
Emma Taylor yes you can!
sorry, I don't get notifications for additional messages.
Is the length of the spine end of as long as the pieces you're threading through the hole? How much fabric will I need to make an oval that's approximately 3x5? I echo everyone's sentiments. Your beautiful voice, calm manner, clear thinking, excellent pacing. You really make this inspiring.
Hi Claudia, overall, the 'spine' uses less strips than the 'working piece'
My blog post should give you some idea of how much fabric to use. But generally I use king size or double duvet covers. The great thing is that you can keep adding to it.
barrijaynemakes.blogspot.com/2017/07/handmade-rag-rug-tutorial.html hope it helps.
Thank you so much for you lovely message. Enjoy making you rug! 😊

Awww, thank you so much! Enjoy making your rug😊💜
Really nice of you to share! I was surprised you were saying inches! LOL
@@BarriJayneMakes Thank you...I will definitely see it thru.
These are absolutely beautiful! Thank you so much!!!!
Jennifer Wood Thank you! Enjoy making your rug! 😊
I love contrasting ribbon for the spine! Great idea. How much ribbon would one need I order to weave a double size duvet, for example?
Hello Lenore, thanks for your message. Now that is one question I'm unable to answer. All I can say is that you will need loads and loads. But I bet it would look amazing! 😊
Thank you for your good demonstration.
I'm glad you like it. Happy rug making 😊

Thank you so very much for this rug-making series! Very good instruction and inspiration. XO-Brenda
Thank you for your lovely messsge, TransferEssence. Glad it has inspired you 😊

I really enjoyed your video. The ribbon really made it easy to learn as the color stood out and helped to visualize the start. And the term spine helped me to I understand the construction.

Fabulous! Enjoy making your rug! 😊
Enjoy making your rug! 😊
@@BarriJayneMakes yes I would be very interested but I admit to knowing nothing about it. Bless you for thinking of it. Diane
