That is exactly what came to my mind while I was watching a totally new hand craft which is latch hook craft and from watching tutorial videos about latch hook I came here to this video. The amount of number of crafts out there that we don’t know about is really crazy!!🤯 And after I was convinced that UA-cam is waste of time for me and my kids, I come cross this kind of amazing videos to make me change my mind. I would like to thank the video maker so much for introducing us to another wonder craft that is amazing 🤩

I have learned so much from UA-cam.. more than I ever did from school.. that’s sad.. but I am grateful! We should be teaching stuff like this to children
It's definitely a great activity to share with children. I use to run a parent and child rug making workshop, which was also a lovely way for them to bond. 😊
I Care for a lady with dementia who gets agitated if I play anything she can hear. But your demonstration is so clear I can see what to do even if I can't play it out loud at all. Thank you!
You have such a calm way of teaching, this looks like a very relaxing project and I have so many old sheets, I just want to know can you make it tighter if you use strips that are not as wide? These look like they would make beautiful placemats on my table. Thank you so much, I always love handmade crafts. Are these really inspired by the Amish?
@@mattikarosenthal3298 Thank you! Yes, you can definitely make them smaller and tighter. You can use almost any fabric and they will make lovely placemats. Here's some ideas, from 10mins ua-cam.com/video/9KHqFoha4jc/v-deo.html Have fun! 😊 I believe they were inspired by the Amish.
I was cutting old tee shirts into rags and thinking there had to be a better use for old fabric. I came across your video and you are so patient and wonderful at explaining all of the steps. I am now going to be on the hunt for some fabric to try this. Your work is just beautiful! Thank you!
How can almost 1k people dislike such a specific and detailed rag rug video? Thanks for the tutorial very excited to make my toothbrush needle and get going!
How wonderful! I grew up with these rugs in our house that my great grandma made. They were GIGANTIC! I always wondered how they were made. Now I know. Your voice is soothing. It’s lovely to listen to. You are a very good teacher❤️. I look forward to making these for myself as well as my children & grandchildren. I don’t want the heritage behind these rugs to die off. Thank you 🙏🏼
I love the way you show the simplest way to do this without having to buy anything or use a complicated trick. This is the most comforting tutorial I’ve ever watched.
I, ve seen hundreds of tutorials on yt. This the first time one not boring without to much talking too much about nothing. Easy to understand every step. Thx a lot. Hope to start my work soon
Thank you for showing us a unique yet crafty and thrifty wag to recycle materials on hand, such as bed sheets! I will not be throwing sheets away! I will be recycling them!
I’ve been making crocheted rugs for fifty years. I’m glad to see that it’s becoming more popular. I use old sheets, mostly. I stitch them together end to end so as to avoid those knots that hurt when you step on them
This is so beautiful to watch. My mother was born nine of 10 children in 1926. Her mother who was 38/39 when she had my mom I think. Made Loom rugs with a machine in the basement my mother said where she fed something back and forth and had pedals. But she also made these circular rugs or oval rugs I hand out of I can't even believe there was anything left of the reused clothing repurposed clothing over and over and over but she still found a way! 10 children and almost zero income. She farmed a plot of land next door with permission. So she had to dig the thick thick Bramble out by hand sitting on the ground. She got it out enough to grow her family's food. A neighbor would bring flower sugar a dozen eggs every once in awhile a chicken which I do not touch animal products but I understand the times. These gifts were not every month. But my grandmother between her garden her caning and a Little Help from Neighbors raised 10 of her own children into of somebody else's. Plus my grandfather I don't know his story so much but I know he didn't work that often. My grandmother made all of her children's clothing the oldest of the boys would make the youngest children's Christmas presents by finding broken toys and fixing them. So a doll may have one wooden leg. But my grandmother would paint them back up, and make their clothing. So the dolls were as new as they could be. She also quilted and made hundreds of quilts which none are remaining. All of them had been passed around long before I was born. My grandmother went blind but could still do some of this work. My mother was pregnant with me and my grandmother bought the yarn and asked my auntie to crochet some outfits for me which were in pale green and the other I think was white because of course they didn't know if I was a boy or a girl back then. Off-topic but I think it should still be that way LOL. My mother lost her father in July while pregnant with me her mother in October I was born a couple weeks later in November. I can still feel my grandmother in the work that she did do all the stories my mother told me. I wish I would have learned more from my mother. I thought I had the time you know.

Such a wonderful idea. I have a set of sheets I didn't want to part with that belonged to me and my last husband. I loved listening to your instructions, and the fact that that you did it in a way that was very easy to understand. Thank you very much.

Thank you for sharing. I’m just a little old man who favors an older, more simpler time. I’ve made rag rugs three different ways; crochet, braided then sewn, and another, I think called braid in rug. Yours is technique that looks strong and durable. Thank you for sharing.
Thank You lovely lady! You have helped me through the Covid-19 boredom! I'm using up my duvet covers and sheets which I couldn't get rid of whilst also hanging on to my sanity! Good clear instructions with a soothing voice. Very appreciated
Well I believe no matter where or whom that started this... It was a pioneer thing... Past down ... And sometimes we get a refresher on it as we r lucky enough to have an extra teaching of a lost skill... I had a neighbor yrs ago who made these ... I wanted to learn now I can see how she did it... Amazing! thank you for sharing your skill
You are a fantastic teacher, and have inspired me to give this a try. My mom used to tell me about making rag rugs during the war and I think this is what she meant. It’s also a nice way to use up sentimental fabric. Thank you!
Thank you so much! I love your video because it is not stressful to listen to with your gentle voice and no music, and I can easily follow your clear instructions. ♡♡♡
Well done! I love that you've DIYed the toothbrush needle too! No need for me to go out to find one at a fabric or craft store - the ultimate needle in an haystack search.
I sure hope you are going to be making more videos!!! I so enjoyed your format of no loud music and listening to you is so calming just what I like when doing arts/crafts of any kind, WOW so wonderful and I think the way you do your rug is fantastic and your instructions are clear! THANK YOU and HAPPY NEW YEAR from Montana USA.
Thank you so much for such a lovely message. I do plan to make more craft videos, hopefully in the near(ish) future. Wishing you all the best in 2020 Happy rug making! 😊
Very good video! My Great Aunt Clara used to make these. I loved them. I was only 5 when she passed on. I was always longing to continue on with teaching this art to pass on to future generations. Next year it will go to the 5th generation from her to my great granddaughter!
Thank you for your lovely message, Kathryn. I hope you enjoy making your rug and teaching this craft to others. It's a lovely activity to share with little ones. Happy rug making! 😊
I am 51 yrs old, I remember sitting as a child with my grandma and mom listening to them talking about how they used to make these rugs using the reminents from a old textile kill they used to collect, as well as old sheets etc. They used to promise to teach me how to make one but ahh they never did. Thanks 😊 perhaps I shall try to make one in their memory! ☺
I made my 'needle' from a spatula handle that my black lab puppy chewed on. I cut off the wooden handle, drilled a hole in one end and tapered the other end. Works great!!!
I remember these rugs in my Grand parents. I'm disabled and I have been looking for something to do with my time. I'm going to try this. I'm stuck in my chair All day long with nothing to do but look out my window.. thank you for showing me how to make those. Agape and phileo
@@rebeccarodgers4285 Hi Rebecca, I hope you enjoy having a go. You could also make small placemats/trivets, which is also a fun project to do ua-cam.com/video/9KHqFoha4jc/v-deo.htmlsi=vps93t7qCHkk3VhA I hope you have a lovely view from your window. Wishing you all the best! 😊💜
You are a great teacher. I had always wanted to make one. You inspired me! I made two in a week. Fast and easy all because of you. I've made multiple twined rugs on a loom but this is easier on the body...no reaching over my head and can be done while watching tv with my husband instead of in the basement by myself. Thank you so much!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow, your rug is very lovely! ♥️ My great grandmother, who passed when I was 7 years old, used to make these. It's such a treat to randomly come across your tutorial showing me how to make them. You are an EXCELLENT instructor. I imagine if you wanted an oval rug you'd make the start of it elongated somehow. Thank you so much for sharing this amazing craft! ♥️😊
This is the best video I’ve found for learning how to make toothbrush rugs. I made my needle from the wood of a small tree branch. It’s easier to hold. I cut all my strips at once and hang them over a cabinet door. A circle shape is much easier to get right than an oval. You need 2 Queen top-sheets to make one small rug. Also, much more enjoyable to stand while working.
Yay! So glad you enjoyed the tutorial, Kathy. Love how you made your needle, what a fabulous idea. Will definitely be trying that out, thank you! It's interesting though, as I found the oval rug much easier to make. 😊 Enjoy making many more rugs and needles 😊
This is something I have never seen before, the technique is amazing, the fabric you've chosen is really pretty, thank you for the wonderful tutorial,😍
Fantastic, thank you Barri-Jayne for sharing this. My mum left the Amish community when she was young. We're both weavers and handcrafters, but I've never seen this technique before.
Thank you. That was all the go before technology and the throw away mentality took over our lives. Families would gather around the fireplace and knit or make rugs. I will have a go at making one. Very enjoyable
Thank you! I think this must be how my great-grandmother made her rag rugs. I never saw her do it; by the time I knew her - 1950s - she mostly darned socks and crocheted hot pads. She probably used a discarded toothbrush like I did for a school potholder project - rounded end, not pointed.
Brilliant instruction: clear, concise, with repetition, and just slow enough to follow the movements!!! You’ve thought of everything. Thank you, Ms. Barrí-Jayne!
Thank you. I can see you have made this video 6 years ago and it's still inspiring people (like me 😁). Since I'm into things like basketry (pineneedle, strips of jeans) I also stumble on tutorials like these. Very nice, thank you for posting. 😊
Thank you for this tutorial. It was easy to follow along with. I repurposed my son's crib sheets into a round rug for his room. A tip for everyone: use the smallest measuring spoon you have as your needle. I used my 1/8 tsp as it has a big hole on the handle and is skinny all the way down to the spoon.
I have done some crocheting and now gotten into sewing. This looks like a great way to use my scrap fabric. The directions were easy to follow from my crocheting days. You're clear, concise, and have such a soothing voice. Thanks so much!
This was amazing to find you! I am working on my first rug now! Super excited! Thank you for an amazing tutorial, I will be looking at others for sure! Love & Light 💚
My mother made these. I have 5 of them. My favorite is made of Daddy’s pajamas. He wore poly cotton pjs, so it has held up better than the cotton ones. She sewed the strips together. I am thrilled to see the method you use for this. Sh also just used a big crochet hook.
So glad your tutorial came up on my suggested videos! I tried this a couple months ago, the vid made it look so easy, but I got frustrated & gave up. Your explanation is SO much better for me....picked up some sheets at the thrift store yesterday. Thank you!!
I am from algeria and my uncle used to make this rag rug during 70's & 80's it's amazing to know that amish also make this rug , i think even in caribean islands have this artisan .
Hey, thanks for your message. It's amazing to know that so many countries created this same beautiful rug. I'd love to know the different names it goes by. Enjoy making your rug 😊
Thank you so much for taking the time to show us how to do this amazing rug. I live in Indiana about 10 years ago I bought 2 rugs just like this in Nappanee. That Store no longer exist. But now I can make my own
Thank you so much I learned a lot.Loved your voice ,clear instructions and watching your lovely hands working.I have used a crochet hook before but like your method better.

Have fun making your rug (and needle) 😊
you really take the time to explain each step so clearly. THANK YOU!
enjoy making your rug 😊
My mom would take the bread plastic wrapers and braid them into a rug. And it actually worked well thanks for sharing
So cool, love that! Enjoy making your rug 😊
You are a fantastic teacher, and have inspired me to give this a try. My mom used to tell me about making rag rugs during the war and I think this is what she meant. It’s also a nice way to use up sentimental fabric. Thank you!
Thank you so much, Marjorie. Enjoy making your own rug 😊
You’re voice and accent are so pleasant and you’re a great teacher. I’m inspired to find some old sheets to make one of these rugs this winter!
Thank you so much. Enjoy making your rug 😊
@@BarriJayneMakes - thank you!
Thank you so much! I love your video because it is not stressful to listen to with your gentle voice and no music, and I can easily follow your clear instructions. ♡♡♡
Thank you for your sweet message, Marissa! Enjoy making your rug and happy crafting 😊
Barri-Jayne
Well done! I love that you've DIYed the toothbrush needle too! No need for me to go out to find one at a fabric or craft store - the ultimate needle in an haystack search.
Thank you. Enjoy making your needle and rug 😊
Beautifully explained. Without ego. If only all tutorials were like this.
@@stevecook172001 Thank you! Enjoy making your rug 😊
Wishing you all the best in 2020
Happy rug making! 😊
All these years later & I'm still sharing your video to my Facebook Rug page followers! Thank you!
That's so fabulous to hear 💕 Thank you so much. Big love to you and your rug making friends 💖
I’m so thankful for your time, kindness, and efforts in making this tutorial! 💚

Thank you, thank you. It looks much easier than then crochet I attempted and failed at. This is awesome 😊 BE blessed
@@dreamalamb4259 You're welcome! Enjoy making your rug 😊 All the best!
Fabulous! I’d forgotten about these rag rugs, thanks for the great tutorial! Now I know what to do with the fabric I have.
Enjoy making your rug 😊

I am 51 yrs old, I remember sitting as a child with my grandma and mom listening to them talking about how they used to make these rugs using the reminents from a old textile kill they used to collect, as well as old sheets etc. They used to promise to teach me how to make one but ahh they never did. Thanks 😊 perhaps I shall try to make one in their memory! ☺
Thank you for your message, Debra! Definitely have a go! 😊
Thank you for going slow and talking through what you are doing. It is very helpful!
Thank you. Enjoy making your rug 😊
What a beautiful rug ! And so beautifully spoken! Such a soothing, calm voice 💐
Thank you so much. Enjoy making your rug ☺️
I saw this just today, and you are an amazing teacher! Answered all my queries!!
thank you! Enjoy making your rug 😀
I made my 'needle' from a spatula handle that my black lab puppy chewed on. I cut off the wooden handle, drilled a hole in one end and tapered the other end. Works great!!!
That's fabulous! Enjoy making your rug 😊
You could also make small placemats/trivets, which is also a fun project to do ua-cam.com/video/9KHqFoha4jc/v-deo.htmlsi=vps93t7qCHkk3VhA
I hope you have a lovely view from your window. Wishing you all the best! 😊💜
I could listen to you talk and watch your beautiful hands work all day.

Me too!
Thank you for this clear tutorial (with no annoying music!) I cannot wait to make a rug now 🥰
Thank you. Enjoy making your rug 😊
You made this seem doable!!! I am going to make this. And I love your beautiful calm voice. It is very calming and peaceful sounding!
Thank you so much, Angela! Enjoy making your rug 😊
That's so wonderful. Two in a week is fabulous! Glad you're enjoying your rug making!
Happy New Year 😊
Wow, your rug is very lovely! ♥️😊
Thank you! Now you can continue the tradition 😊
Here's the oval rug

I appreciated how clearly you demonstrated each step.
thank you. enjoy making your rug 😊
Love that you do it the same way I was taught by my mother. Love the care you've taken to create the rug.
Thank you, Faye. Enjoy making your rug ☺️
Your a very good teacher. I can’t wait to try this. Enjoy your video, no music and calm .
Thank you, Lisa. Enjoy making your rug 😊
This is something I have never seen before, the technique is amazing, the fabric you've chosen is really pretty, thank you for the wonderful tutorial,😍
Thank you Susan. Enjoy making your rug 😊
Thank you for sharing. I finally discovered how to recycle the old bed sheets.
@@Frances6889 Fabulous! Enjoy making your rug 😊
Fantastic, thank you Barri-Jayne for sharing this. My mum left the Amish community when she was young. We're both weavers and handcrafters, but I've never seen this technique before.
You are very welcome, Lena! Happy crafting 😊
Thank you. That was all the go before technology and the throw away mentality took over our lives. Families would gather around the fireplace and knit or make rugs. I will have a go at making one. Very enjoyable
Thank you. Enjoy making your rug 😊
Thank you! I think this must be how my great-grandmother made her rag rugs. I never saw her do it; by the time I knew her - 1950s - she mostly darned socks and crocheted hot pads. She probably used a discarded toothbrush like I did for a school potholder project - rounded end, not pointed.
Lovely memories! Enjoy making your rugs 😊
2:06 If you don't want to cut wire (or have the tools to do so), you can use paperclips
This is what I did!
Brilliant instruction: clear, concise, with repetition, and just slow enough to follow the movements!!! You’ve thought of everything. Thank you, Ms. Barrí-Jayne!
Thank you and you are so welcome. Enjoy making your rug 😊
Thank you. I can see you have made this video 6 years ago and it's still inspiring people (like me 😁). Since I'm into things like basketry (pineneedle, strips of jeans) I also stumble on tutorials like these. Very nice, thank you for posting. 😊
Thank you! Enjoy making your rug 😊
Thanks for your message. What a lovely keepsake for your son. Thanks also for the tip. Hope you continue to make many more rugs 😊
The best part of this diy is that even the tools are diy.. loved it 😃
Hello zoha. Before I go out and buy, I see if I can make it myself. I love money saving ideas 😊
Happy rug making!
Me too always try and repurpose something instead of buying new
I have done some crocheting and now gotten into sewing. This looks like a great way to use my scrap fabric. The directions were easy to follow from my crocheting days. You're clear, concise, and have such a soothing voice. Thanks so much!
Thank you loads! Enjoy making your rug 😊
Very pretty! Thank you for showing this way of making these rugs. Everybody here wants to use a needle and thread and make it too complicated.
Thank you! Enjoy making your rug 😊
No annoying loud distracting background music! Yeah!
Glad you're happy, Dianne! Enjoy making your rug 😊
Yes! It seems everytime theres background music it's very loud and distracting, I love that she has chosen to keep her nice voice front and center.
This was amazing to find you! I am working on my first rug now! Super excited! Thank you for an amazing tutorial, I will be looking at others for sure! Love & Light 💚
Thank you, Aleshia. Enjoy making your rug 😊
My mother made these. I have 5 of them. My favorite is made of Daddy’s pajamas. He wore poly cotton pjs, so it has held up better than the cotton ones. She sewed the strips together. I am thrilled to see the method you use for this. Sh also just used a big crochet hook.
Rugs full of memories. I love that. 😊It's great to know you will be making your own now. 😀
My grandma made these. When we were kids, if we had a 'mad' we could tear fabric for her. It was so satisfying. ❤️
So satisfying and therapeutic 🧘🏾♀️🧘🏻♀️Enjoy making your rug 😊

This is very well done. In South Africa we cut up plastic grocery bags (cut around and around until we have a long 'rope') makes fab strong shopping bags.
Thank you 🙏🏾 Love the idea of reusing plastic bags 😁
Give it a go and once you have perfected it, make a video so we can see.
