Being a mermaid is about so much more than just swimming in a mermaid tail, it is a way of life. It is a journey of discovering who you are and who your are meant to be and of sharing a passion for the water with others and forging friendships that will last a life time. It is about believing in yourself through the thick and thin and encouraging others to do the same.
Being a mermaid is about keeping that little spark alive, that little spark that reminds us that anything is possible with a monofin, some fabric and dream.

May I say that I am a fat mermaid. I’m self conscious in certain dresses, blouses and bathing suits...BUT when I am Mermaid Erin I don’t even notice anything but fun and joy. I see photos afterwards and am sometimes surprised that I wasn’t even aware of my rolls. Nothing has ever felt more natural to me. Plus, I’ve been doing this for 4 years (summers, mostly) and I have lost about 40 lbs, just by having fun and learning new tricks to entertain my sons. Thanks to mermaiding I have become so at home with my body that I even sewed myself a gorgeous rhinestone orca tail and matching top! It cracks me up AND it looks amazing! My favorite surfing rule is that the best surfer in the lineup is the one having the most fun. I feel that it’s the same when I mermaid, people see me having a great time and it brings an amused smile to their faces and hopefully the rest of their day.

OMG this is perfect. First, being in the water and swimming is awesome fun and healthy. Second, being at home in your body is so important. Third... I WANT TO SEE THIS AWESOME ORCA TAIL because my website and general online identity is "swordwhale" (orca). Says the 63 year old fattish lady mermaid. Carry on!!!

    My thoughts on each point:
1st point: ‘you’re fake’ - what’s the point of stating the obvious about a **costume** it’s like taking off a Disney mascot’s head in front of everyone
2nd point: ‘mermaid body size’ - love yourself everyone! Honestly there’s a lot of skinny people that are unhealthy and people that have a larger build can be considered healthy (doesn’t mean all are)!
3rd point: ‘men as mermaids’ - why does it matter if a man or woman that has a tail? If female mermaids can inspire girls, mermen can inspire boys too!
4th point: ‘it’s so childish’ - I mean so is dressing up for Halloween or having ice cream for dinner but I’m not complaining **sips tea**
5th point: ‘get a real job’ - stress, and there is a profession called ‘PROFESSIONAL MERMAID’ or ‘PERFORMER’ but maybe I’m too childish to dress in a costume to please children like at literally almost anywhere kids related
Thoughts I realized were pretty similar but that’s my 2 cents on it. It’s also really long sorry oof

Also on point two... it doesn't matter if someone is healthy. Like, the way society treats people who they don't see as healthy is really awful. By pointing it out to people who may not have s good body image, and may be working towards being healthier... Its really discouraging.

"It's so childish" seems to fail to take into account the serious physical and mental training that must go into being a mermaid. And I completely agree, there's nothing wrong with taking the childhood magic into adulthood. 😊 I love drawing with chalk, and I love Disney movies, and I have no shame in it. 🧜

I had a substitute teacher that asked us what we wanted to be when we grew up. I answered “Professional lifeguard and professional mermaid”. She laughed in front of the entire class. This flipping teacher laughed laughed in front of a class full of immature seventh graders. Thankfully the class (even the people that don’t like me) accept that (from a past experience at a end of year pool party) so none of them laughed with her. The sub was like “That isn’t a real job. I’ve never heard of a professional mermaid. That’s what you’re going to do when you need to pay for college?” I about stood up and gave her a lesson on everything I can do as a professional mermaid that she can’t do as a substitute teacher with no other job, but I didn’t. I told her that I already had a start with a friend (who was actually in the room) so that we could get our pod out there so when we get older people know we are for hire and we get gigs easier. When she got to the other girl in the pod, she proudly answered “Professional mermaid” and the teacher just sighed.

Of course you're salty about this, you're a mermaid! I am often really self conscious swimming without my tail because I have always thought that my legs looked...wrong or weird, and I have tried to convince myself otherwise, but it keeps coming back, and I can't stop it. I always think that people judge me for my looks, and I tell myself that their opinions can't hurt me in any way, but I still imagine what they think. One of the reasons I love swimming in my tail so much... is because it hides a lot of my insecurities. My tail makes me feel a little bit more confident, and I thank you Courtney for helping me work up the courage to get a tail.

I can relate so much to this on so many levels. I have a lot of scars on my shins and a lot of broken blood vessels on my right leg and a lump (fat deposit) on the top of my left thigh (which only I really notice but it still bothers me). I live with so much pain in my legs and I can be a bit resentful and embarrassed about it sometimes. When I’m wearing my mermaid tail you can’t see any of it and it makes me feel more like myself. ♥

I'm a transgender guy, and the only time I ever feel 100% comfortable in my body is when I wear my mermaid tail. I still call myself a mermaid even though I am a boy (just not physically), but like I said before, I dont care that Im a 14 year old male mermaid, I care about the fact my tail makes me feel like myself. My whole family basically looks down on me because I want to be a professional mermaid when I'm older. They just look at me and treat me like I'm never gonna be able to succeed in life and I'm never gonna be able to support my future kids just because I want to be a professional mermaid. But just watching your videos and inspirational mermaid videos have just made me feel so secure about my dream job. I honestly feel 100% more secure in a mermaid community then with anyone else. Best video I've seen in forever. I was told I was childish even as a child/teen... With just about anything I did. And by some sort of miracle: nobody has ever told me my mermaiding is childish!! "it's only a costume you know, but the feeling is real..." said the mermaid dreamily and swam of into fantasy where nobody could hurt her.

If you're swimming with your swimming goggles and someone / a kid comes up to you and tells you that real mermaids don't need swimming goggles you could just tell them that you need them because your eyes are not as good as other mermaids, just like a human would wear glasses when their eyes are not that good. The only difference is that normal glasses wouldn't stay on properly under the sea ;)

Thank you so much for this!! I'm absolutely in love, and you're so right with each point.
And the things mentioned apply to many other life situations as well...
The "you're fake" part reminds me of something really cute that happened when I was swimming in the Baltic Sea not long ago:
A young mother who spent time on the beach with her little daughter (4 or 5 yrs or so?) came over with her child when I appeared close to the shore as a mermaid.
Her daughter, of course, asked me "Are you a real mermaid?" and I replied "Yes, of course I am!". The girl's mum than said something to her about how it's obvious because I have a tail etc.
Girl: "Hmm but I think that maybe she just put on a suit and is just pretending to be a real mermaid."
Her mum giggled and told her "You're just too smart, as usual!"
Girl to me: "So, is that right?"
I nodded but then pointed at my chest, and explained to her: "But inside, in my heart, I AM real mermaid."
Her face brightened up as she obviously understood what I was talking about, and she turned to her mum: "When she is swimming like that, with her tail and all, I guess she actually IS a real mermaid!"
    I was super happy!
After that I turned around and swam back to the deeper waters, and when I got up to take a breath, I heard her calling "Bye-bye, mermaid!!", and looked back just to see her waving goodbye while sitting high up in her mother's arms.
This was one of my favourite mermaid experiences here so far, and a good example to bring some positivity to the "You're fake" part. ♥
And btw, for "men can't be mermaids": A merman is also part of our swarm and it's so cool since he also is a retiree, which proves once again that not even gender or size doesn't matter, but age doesn't, too!

I just recently got a mermaid tale and I was so excited about it. That I told my grandmother and she said to me " dont u think ur too old for that? Why did u waste ur mothers money like that!? (Bc my mom bought it for me) and it kind of brought me down bc ever since I knew that this was a thing I was infatuated by it I loved it. Whenever i got into water it was all i thought about. I even practiced on my own of trying to create my own mermaid tale and learning how to swim with one. And as soon as she said that it made me feel embarrassed of myself and upset, and even hurt by the fact that she wasnt supportive. I used to beg for a mermaid tale every year and every year that I didnt get one...i cried. I'm 17 now and just got one on my birthday and was super excited about it but still bummed about my grandmas response and not even sure about it anymore 😞😖

Loved this! I often receive mean comments about my fins or tail being a "weird waste of money" and I find myself trying to justify my love of mermaiding by bringing up the fact that it is great exercise or that it helps me swim super fast. While these things are true, I don't need to justify my mermaiding; I do it because I love it. Great video! Great channel!

Thank you for making this!!!

OMG this video is so great! To the "childish"comments: I'm an artist/writer/fan of animation who is occasionally found on a beach somewhere photographing my toys...eh...collectibles (some of which are mermaids). I'm 63. Yeah. Where's YOUR inner child? is what I'd say to them. You absolutely need to nourish that inner child, that creative spirit, or you will wither up and blow away. Yes, be kind, positive and mature, but gleefully child-like.

Courtney, you did it again. Every sigle thing you said was true! Thank you so much for sharing this video. It could actually make people think what they say.
Once we were swimming normally at a pool, and suddenly a man (that worked at the pool!!) comes to us and starts complaining about our tails and how you can’t wear what we’re wearing (even though it was allowed to use mermaid tails because we were/are part of the diving “team”). But no complains about wetsuits other divers were wearing. And he also was rude enough to say we were childish because of what we do. Well, I still am under age but does it even matter. You don’t say that to anyone. And if you do, you can think who really is the childish one. Just wanted to share this story, because you’re really not the only one, we all have situations like this (unvortunately). You’re amazing😊💙

When I swam with my tail for the first time, I felt complete. As a stressed out teen in high school, it’s amazing to feel something other than worry/anxiety. Putting on my tail causes me to smile and it always causes others to smile too. It helps me forget my anxiety, and for that I’m truly happy every time I visit the pool. No matter who you are or what you are, this kind of happiness is for everyone.

Oh, how I agree with the list, every single point of it. As a Finn, my basic thought regarding everything I do is "what does this and that person think about me doing this or looking like that" and I am very insecure because of it. I know it doesn't matter what anybody else thinks about me and they probably think completely different than I think they think, but still it limits the things I do so much. For example, the only time I mermaid is at our summer cottage, in a lake with just flippers and not a tail (well, it's a safety thing too, the lake is deep). It takes a lot to let go of the fear or being humiliated...

The body shaming portion really hits hard. Mermaiding is such a good way to get fit and healthy. It's one of the reason why I joined. I am on the heavier side and not really all that healthy. But I'm working to change that. And to hear that some people say "you're to fat to swim" "too fat to cosplay" "too fat to dance" hurts me on many levels. Love yourself, love your body, and love your health! I love how you went about the topic and all others here. You are awesome.

Heck yes!! ❤️❤️ I couldn’t have put it better myself!
And people that don’t have nice things to say should really take a looooooong look in the mirror and find out why they choose to be so negative about someone else’s joy! I mean we aren’t harming anyone, and why does it matter if we’ve got curves, or are in our 30’s, 40’s etc, or are a merman? Why do they feel like they have ANY business saying what is acceptable?
Just feel the joy! We all need more joy! ❤️
Anyway... thank you again for another wonderful and inspirational video! You totally rocked it!! And personally, I think the SALT is definitely required in this case! 😁 ❤️❤️

I'm a new mermaid, but long time bellydancer and I always get " you're too skinny to be a belly dancer". Even that hurts cause like you said, who are they to judge and if I was bigger, I'd get the opposite and they'd say I'm too fat/ugly. And I can shake it with the best to the incredible women and men that dance. You are right, we are all be beautiful and forget the haters and judgement. Loving this new community ❤❤❤🧜‍♀️💃😘

Mermen do exist I mean I could name...king Triton, Poesidon, Neptune, same guy from different cultures. So anyone could be a merman or mermaid inspiration is the key. I was inspired to be a merman by watching the little mermaid, and watching H2O, and Mako Mermaids, Splash, Splash too. Sorry if I'm going off but I was called fat once and ever since then I've been working out by swimming in my merman tail. I agree that noone should NEVER ever put anyone down just because of their body type or size.

Love the video! I'm a multiartist. I get the comment "can you actually make a living of that?". My answer varies all depending on the person. The only one supported me in what I wanted in life was my mom. She died 2 years ago. Only family left doesn't really support me because they don't understand what I am trying to do. It takes time to create great things. I will have to believe in myself on a whole new level. I would actually love to try mermainding one day as a sport to keep in shape, but also I always loved mermaids and the sea. I also eat seaweed from time to time. It doesn't matter what business you are in. Stand in your light and as you say in the video "It's YOUR experience that counts!". We are the ones who doesn't die on the bed of regrets, so bless us all!

Hello Courtney Mermaid, watching this video has truly touched my heart and inspired me to continue cosplaying. I have curves and like a lot of women out there I'm very self conscious about the way I look. About a month ago I purchased a mermaid tail from Swimtails along with the mahina merfin and yesterday afternoon was my very first swim as a newbie mermaid. Absolutely loved it even though I swam mostly above water on my front then switching over onto my back, but it was fun! Can't wait for summer to get in more practice with my new tail.
Thank you for posting this, I'm so glad I came across your channel and I love your videos.

Seriously thank you for this video. I myself am a plus sized Mermaid and I do know this anxiety due to years of bullying. When you brought that up I was feeling so great, because you had this Mum-Stare, as I call it. You didn´t just say it to be kind or politically correct, the audience could really feel that you stand behind your words 100%. Thank you so much!
I live in Germany and the Mermaiding Trend hasn´t arrived yet as much as in other countries. So we gain a lot of weird looks, laughs and mean behaviours such as not even being allowed in the pool even though it´s nearly empty. So it does not always have to be words that can be rude or harmful

So about a year ago I started going to the gym, when I was-I started using this lifestyle app. It was teaching me a bunch of recipes and workouts, but the whole thing depended on me. The owner of the gym made a comment that had me start doubting my choice. And, I love this, my older sister said to me, “You can’t listen to everyone’s opinions. Because opinions are like buttholes, everyone has one and some of them stink.”
That just stuck and it puts a nice funny twist on a serious topic~ ^^

I often get told that I'm to fat (and to old) to be a mermaid. And sometimes they call me names like 'sea-cow' and 'whale', then my answer is: 'thank you for the compliment as they are beautiful and graceful beings' and they they don't know what to say any more. Most of the people that call me things are 'grown-ups' but kids love that I'm a mermaid and just look at my tail and not my body ^_^

I gained 10 kilograms due to hormones and all sorts of things and now that I'm just dipping my toes into the world of mermaiding because that was one of my dreams for a long time, there is that stupid voice in the back of my head saying "But you're too fat to be a mermaid. It's not attractive. It doesn't look aestetically pleasing. Can you even fit in the tail?? What about those tummy rolls when you sit? Disgusting." And it just freaking pushes me into a depression and anxiety although I'm now actually embarking on that path. I mean wtf brain? So I am really looking forward to the body image video you're making. This totally made me all teary eyed. Thank you

Thank you for such a heartfelt, necessary video for what we mermaids hear in the real world. I've recently gotten comments from my mom saying how my 11-year old brother can't wear a tail or want to be a merman, like at all. I protest and argue that anybody can be a mermaid and we girls usually LOVE seeing mermen join the club and swim with us, and how it doesn't imply any sort of sexuality or anything. I would be so excited to swim with a merman for once, if only because I've never done that before. This is a wonderful and growing community, and people need to respect and welcome it if possible.

I grew up always loving mermaids. I watched The Little Mermaid everyday as a kid. I always pretended I was a mermaid when I went swimming. I don’t even remember learning to swim. It’s just something I always knew how to do. It’s always been my favorite summer time activity. Fast forward to now and I’m going on 29 years old and that love for mermaids has become much more prominent after finding your channel, Nerdmaid Faith’s channel, and mermaid Zelda’s channel. Now I’m basically obsessed with wanting to buy my first tail and monofin. (I have my eye on a Mertailor Guppy tail). And my fiancé pretty much shot me down on wanting to make this a new hobby. Said how it was basically childish and stupid because I don’t even have anywhere to use a tail. I live in Ohio in the states and with summer coming to an end there’s no where to really swim. I just feel like she really put me down and made me feel stupid for wanting to get a tail. I just love this community already and I’d love to be part of a pod. It’s like a childhood dream coming true.

Egad, I keep thinking of things to say... if anyone sees mermaiding as silly or superficial or childish (one wants to be childLIKE not childish), here's what they need to know.
All myths and faerie tales began as a way of storytelling that leads us below the surface to deeper truths. The "facts" or "science" of the story don't matter, it's the things the story shows us. Faerie folk, merfolk (or merrows in Irish myth), selkies and shapeshifters have, in our century, been shanghaied and relegated to the nursery, turned into cute safe fluffy wuffy bouncy wouncy things for toddlers...
They are far more than that. They always have been. They have always pointed the way deep into our dreams, our inner life, our psychology, our connections to other life. Mermaiding literally puts you in touch with the element of water, with the wilder forces of nature if you venture into a lake or bay or sea. It makes you see the world from another viewpoint, from a world where there is no gravity, no air, no fire, and below fifteen feet or so, no color (unless you bring light with you). It is a world of six directions, not four, where UP for an air-breathing diver like human mermaids, seals, dolphins or orcas is the most important. You learn to breathe differently, to move differently, and ultimately to see differently.
Here on the east coast we have The Chesapeake Mermaid who is involved in environmental education.
Carry on and keep making great, informative videos. They can never be too deep.

Your comments about body image really brought some tears to my eyes. I usually get the opposite end of the body image comment where people tell me I'm too skinny to be a mermaid, or I look way too skeletal, and my arms are really frail, and my legs don't go together right in my tail so you can kind of see them. I'm so self conscious of my body that I usually wear a short dress in the water to hide my ribcage and how thin I am. I also have to take my tails in so they fit me because there are rarely any made in my size. I'm not nor have I ever been anorexic, I simply have severe medical problems that affect my ability to gain weight or have little to no appetite, in addition to an overactive metabolism which causes me to remain excruciatingly small. I've struggled with my body image for as long as I can remember, and it got to a horrible low point where I used to overeat until I made myself sick, and then go eat more because I wanted so badly to gain wait and couldn't because I burn it off faster than I can hold it. Activities like Mermaiding and cosplay and other performance related hobbies used to be something that made me feel powerful and confident, but lately comments like "You're too thin to be this character." Or "you're too skinny to be a mermaid." "You need to cover your arms/waist/ribs/tummy, you look really gross in the water." Have really brought that confidence down to a point where I can hardly focus on my performance gigs half the time because I'm worried about how my arms look or what people are thinking about my tiny build. This was pretty uplifting to watch, and I'm really happy I saw it. I'm going to try harder in the future not to let the nasty comments get to me, as well as try to improve my health properly and in a safe way. I hope you see this comment because I want to thank you so much for the positivity. This video was something I didn't realize I really needed. 💙💜

And now that I'm starting to tangle with the possibility of affording my fabric soon.. this is my biggest fear. People that mind other people's business are the saddest kind of person.. Thank you, thank you so much. Like.. I shouldn't "need" the approval of a youtuber to be a "fat mermaid" if thats what I want to do.. but it sure does help to hear someone say aloud what I try to yell in my head every day. :)

Oh man when someone tells me my mermaiding is childish....I'm like "oh? So you think this is something for children? You want to ask any parent if they will drop 300 to 4000 dollars on a mermaid tail?" Haha. And the "get a real job"...that kills me. I was a stay at home freelance digital artist and I came down to have a bite to eat and I was still in my PJs. His mom goes "I see you're still in your pajamas...you need to get a REAL job." I was livid. Now I sweat my fins off at a barn in this awful heat and humidity and make less money than I did when I was drawing, but....it's a "real" job. They think my dreams of starting a tank show are childish and unrealistic. But it's something I am so passionate about and want to do so badly. I hate when people try to shove my dreams down. Makes me such a depressed and miserable person.

    • @CourtneyMermaid
      @CourtneyMermaid  6 років тому

I know it’s not my place to say anything and I don’t know all the facts, but I am also a freelance digital artist (in addition to being a UA-camr/mermaid tail maker) and I’m sitting here right now as I type this in MY PJS and it is a REAL JOB. People have said it to me before, even close friends (which hurt) but sometimes you just want to get straight to work and getting all “dolled up” just isn’t the way to go. I hope you are able to live the life of your dreams and do a job you are passionate about. Don’t let people define who you are because of their preconceived notions that being an artist isn’t a real job. I tell them to think of that the next time they sit on a piece of furniture, drive their car, plunk their kid down in front of an iPad or their tv, or the next time the open packaging for food or take transit or ANYTHING IN LIFE. Ugh. I’m sending you love and support. ♥ ♥

Courtney Mermaid Thank you so much for the encouragement! It's been seriously needed, I have been so depressed lately with how much my life isn't where I wanted it to be. I never planned on working at a barn and it's turned my passion into something I loathe, and I was so much happier and had much more time to do my hobbies when I was working as an artist. It sucks you went through the same thing. But it's encouraging to know you are successful and happy with what you do and that you didn't let others push you away from doing what you love to do! Once I get out of my boyfriend's parent's house and get my own place, I am going to see about working from home again💖

I ordered a monofin and a mermaid tail a few days ago, just because I wanted to try them out this summer, since I really love swimming. But when I told my brother, who's 5 years younger than me (he's 15, I'm 20), he said all kinds of hurtful things. At first he said that I was a total cliche, since I also like anime and manga. But I really don't get what one has to do with the other. I mean, I've always liked fairies, mermaids, witches, etc. ever since I was a little girl and I even started collecting fairy and mermaid figures when I was 11 or so, while that was the very first time I started liking and consciously watching anime. My brother clearly doesn't get that me wanting to try out mermaiding has nothing to do with my love for anime and manga at all. The second thing he said was just stupid. He said that boys aren't interested in that and that they prefer seeing your butt, rather than you hiding it in a tail. Like, what's that even gonna mean? No one pursues their hobbies for others or to find a new partner. Everyone pursues their hobbies because it's something they enjoy. When you find yourself a partner who is interested in your hobby and who might enjoy it themselves, that's great, if they're not into it, that's fine too, as long as they won't stop you from doing what you love. I mean, I'm not looking for a new boyfriend or something, I just want to try out something new. The last thing he said was the most upsetting. He said that no one wanted to see a "fat" mermaid like me. I'm 172cm in height and weigh about 75 kilograms, so I already have enough insecurities about my body, since I'm slightly chubby. And comments like that just make it worse for me. My brother can be so mean...
But at least your words helped me a little 💕

Love this video so much!! ❤️❤️ I’m a mermaid with curves and I’m just now starting to accept my body as it is. I always thought mermaids had to be small bodies long hair and tan. But I’m slowly learning mermaids come in all sizes and all kinds of beauty. Thanks for all the positivity!! ❤️🧜🏼‍♀️

Thanks for this video. I’m about to get my first tail and about to finish making my tail. I want to be a mermaid. It looks and feels so much fun and magical. I love this video and the real truth in your rant. I love all of you mermaids. You all all so beautiful.

I am an overweight mermaid wannabe. My parents would not let me buy a tail (WITH MY OWN EARNED MONEY) because they say I'm too fat. (And I'm not a 9-year-old ether. I have a job at a shelter) They would not let me cut my hair short till last year because I would "look too fat" I don't go swimming with them because they along with my sister make snide comments about my body, trying to shame me into losing weight. After going to an eight-week-long summer sleepaway camp for young adults and high school aged kids teaching me about self-esteem and body image, I learned that my parents treating me the way they do is not ok. I bought a monofin at the mall (with my parents non-approval) and they got mad. But I don't care anymore. I'm saving up to buy a Mahina monofin and a magictail pro skin, and am only asking for those items or gift cards for Christmas and my birthday. I don't care what my parents think anymore. I am beautiful the way I am. Mermaiding is something I have wanted to do for a long time, almost 4 years now, and I doubt my passion will go away soon. Thank you for saying that telling someone "You're too fat to be a mermaid" is not ok. I delt with that for years and it reduced my self-esteem to almost none. If you are a plus-size mermaid, (or any mermaid!) YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL THE WAY YOU ARE! Don't let haters tear you down. You will rise above them all!

I am absolutely stunned that your parents would say something like that to you. Please don't ever let their hurtful words stand in the way of what you love. I am so happy to hear you are following your heart!

As a new plus size mer, I couldn't agree with you more. I am somewhat self conscious except for when im Mermaid Asteria. I am just starting out on my Mermaid journey. I don't have my first tail yet, but when i'm working on my mersona or in selkie character mode, I don't really care what anyone thinks of my curves. I did want to ask if you have a makeup tutorial of the makeup you have on your cheeks. I love that look. This is my first character/cosplay that I have done a complete background, personality, history, and persona for, and i'm having a blast doing it.
