  • The Doctor is in! That's right - Season 2, episode 13 is here. Connor, Dominic, and Erica have a wonderful conversation with Star Trek royalty, Gates McFadden, best known to us as Dr. Crusher.
We discuss Gates' childhood in Ohio, running off to France for school, finding her way back to the US, her first first name and more. How booking Star Trek got her to LA and what it's like having the family reunion that is Picard season 3. Wash is looking better than ever. Erica gets some fan questions in, this week’s Star Trek Trivia gets outed as a sham, and Gates plays “Stuck on a Deserted Island with Connor Trinneer.”
It's another awesome conversation and another amazing Star Trek icon having some laughs. The Doctor will see you now, but we already know the prescription... mimosas and fun, so buckle up!

I adore the way Gates looked out for Erica, turning the conversation back to her after she tried to ask a question. A subtle but important demonstration of both keen awareness of, and compassion for, others in a group conversation. Everyone in this interview did a great job. @@GODCONVOYPRIME The bright lighting? I don't know. I mean, we have such precise recording tools these days that actors don't have to compromise their vision of the scene and producers don't have to compromise and editors and yadda yadda.... but they're forgetting that they still have to compromise with the audience. I understand that the director wants the scene to be dark... but I want to see the actors' faces.
Like, if I was watching a Marvel movie, and somebody got *photo-realitically* shot in the face, I'd turn the movie off. That's sort of the same thing; even if it's the author's vision, it's not something I, as an audience member, have an appetite for in my Marvel movies.
"Can" versus "should," y'know? You *can* have your actor speak in an historically accurate and extremely thick 18th century Cockney accent as though they're an illiterate commoner with a broken jaw, but *should you?*

They have all been great so far, but Gates was an absolute stunner of a guest this week. She is so vibrant and full of energy at an age where most have already started slowing down, and her spirit and passion for life and her career just shine through so brilliantly.
I really loved getting to hear all the wonderful stories she had to share.
I would like to echo the sentiments of many other commenters in saying that while the more recent Trek Series have been ok, they haven’t really resonated with me on the same level as the Berman-Braga era Trek did.
Picard Season 3 has brought me a level of joy and anticipation for upcoming episodes in a way I haven’t felt since Enterprise was on the air.
Having Gates and the rest of the TNG cast rejoin Patrick Stewart to do what they do best when they work together on set has brought back to life a special place reserved in my heart for Trek I thought I had lost almost 20 years ago, and I want to thank them for bringing their particular talents and camaraderie together for what might possibly be for the last time in this kind of scope and scale.
It means more than words can describe, and they should be proud of themselves , Dom and Connor and many others included, for being able to have that level of impact on the lives of others and the joy they have brought to so many people over the years.

@@miller-joel I think you mistook me for the other person replying to your comment. 🤨 This was the first time I addressed you. And perhaps if that’s your stance, you should examine the way you phrased things because reading the exchange between you and the other person, that is how I took it.

I saw Gates and Patrick in a show together in LA while Next Generation was on. I can't recall the name of it at the moment, but they were both wonderful in it. I also recall our Ford Tempo broke down in traffic on the way home. That wasn't wonderful, but as horrible as that was, I am still glad I went.

Took me forever to figure out why Gates McFadden was so alluring to me. While the character portrayed by Marina Sirtis was not, even though the writers had her fill that role. Gates McFadden is a dancer. That poise, movement, and confidence comes through without saying a word. IMHO & YMMV. Multiple superlative praises to you Miss McFadden. Thank you.

The wonderful thing about young people being inspired to become a doctor because of Dr. Crusher is that she had very high integrity as a doctor so she was inspiring that in them as well. We need all of that we can get in this world.
I'm really sorry to hear Gates' is going through a two+ year remodel. That's got to be frustrating. I'm a tileman (37 years) and I get bothered to hear such things. If she lived near Burbank I'd offer to help.

Dominic, Connor, Gates--What I love the most about your podcast is the opportunity it provides me to see who you all are as people, which in turn gives me a calibration on how you're different from your characters; plus it reveals what died-in-the-wool artsies you all (of course) are, which is important to me since I'm one too (composer/arranger). Actors are a world unto themselves, but I like to think of us musicians as their 'kissing cousins.' Wonderful show again this week, everyone! Love you all (Erica and Mark too)--Don

Best thing ever was Gates coming back. As good as an actress Diana Muldaur is, she just didn't 'fit'. The number of people angry over Gates departure had to be in the hundreds of thousands. Unfortunately, they totally mis-cast her to be a "Bone's" like person, and it turned off so many people.
Gates, be proud of that Season 3 of Picard. WOW. The entire family back together again. We all wish Will Weaton would have joined in as well, and many of us understand why he didn't, but it would have been just amazing.

This is the best interview of Gates anywhere on the internet, possibly ever (though I would have to defer to Gates on the ever part). Far better than you get at cons where short answers are expected given the long queue of people waiting to ask their questions. Far more personal than cons where I imagine it would be hard to speak candidly in a large room full of people where you might be expected to keep the mood light. Far more structured with a clear line of narration which may be indicative of some professional preparation on discussion topics to touch upon with Gates. I feel like she also put in the time to prepare informative and unique anecdotes on these topics for this 1.5 hr interview. She never pauses (as you might in real life) to think about how to prepare her answer or remember something about her past or fill the time. Connor and Dominic have done their research but also ask questions naturally as if hearing her for the first time. I like that they are collegial and genuinely interested as fellow actors. So respectful to Gates. The overall quality and professionalism really shows. Kudos to Mark, Gates, Dominic, Connor, and the team for understanding so well what the fans actually want. 😁
