Buying a budget Bluewater sailboat means there is inevitably going to be a lot of projects! Come along with us as we refit our Stan Huntingford C&L Explorer 45’. In the boating community it’s a big no-no to paint teak but we dove right in and sanded back some of Meraki’s teak and slapped on some good ol’white paint.
This is our story! Our story of a family with big dreams to sail off into the deep blue sea. Come along with us while we pack up our lives and make the ocean our new home.

    About Us:
Cruising the World with SV Meraki! We are THREE Generations coming together to create the Cruising Meraki Project. Join Kevin, Shawna, Mick, Kate, Thomas and Bentley's sailing adventure of a lifetime. An adventure that leads them to meet wonderful people, experience new cultures and see the world in a whole new way. We hope you enjoy our project as much as we enjoy sharing it with you!
What is the Cruising Meraki Project?
The “Project” began back in 2018 when we first decided to start working towards a goal of sailing the world as 3 generations. The term “Project” is fitting for us as we are working together collaboratively to achieve a common goal.
meraki [mer-ah-kee] (verb) This is a word that modern Greeks often use to describe doing something with soul, creativity, or love - when you put “something of yourself” into what you’re doing, whatever it may be.

Hey there! We used an industrial interior paint for the top coat but more importantly we invested in a really great primer to ensure the oils of the teak do not weep through the paint. The primer we used was Zinsser primer sealer. I was really pleased with the result, it seems super solid.

@@CruisingMeraki Painting over old, varnished, stained and used wood is really difficult, your use and suggestion of Zinsser seems to be a good choice, but I would recommend using a mask with any oil-based primer or paint, as the effectiveness and off-gassing are related.
